Welcome to our Professional Development Program for summer term As a doctoral candidate of one of our member programs you automatically gain access to our program. Whether you choose to take part in one of our transferable skills trainings, our career development workshops, or any other of our offerings, the Professional Development Program is designed to support you in any aspect of your career that goes beyond the core activities of your individual research areas. Our program will provide you with the tools necessary to succeed in your dissertation project, to enhance your competencies and maximize your potential, to prepare for a career in industry, academia or the public sector. Dahlem Research School encompasses 27 outstanding structured doctoral programs at Freie Universität Berlin. With currently over 900 doctoral candidates, a third of whom come from abroad, DRS fosters transdisciplinary research in an international context. This gives you the chance to get to know your peers from different disciplines. We strongly encourage you to take advantage of these opportunities to expand your horizons! Equally important is a range of key competencies that are crucial not only for your academic development, but also in other professional contexts: Communicating adequately in different settings, organizing yourself and your work and mastering IT are examples of this. The fact that only a maximum of 1 out of 10 doctoral researchers continue their career in academia highlights the need for a varied skill set even more. The Professional Development Program at Dahlem Research School takes this into account and helps you to prepare for different career paths. On the basis of the principles of research integrity, the workshops hone your reading, writing and teaching skills and support you in publishing and presenting your research and defending your dissertation. 9

10 Transferable Skills Management Competencies Career Development Management Competency courses give you the opportunity to acquire and improve additional skills that complement your academic performance and prepare you to take on responsible positions in your future career. You will find workshops focusing on a range of IT tools, support for motivating and organizing yourself, as well as strategies for improving your networking skills. Each career requires individual planning. Our program provides you with courses that support you along the way, from exploring your options and choosing a career path to applying for jobs. Other offerings give you a chance to gain new perspectives by considering economic aspects and public relations. training coaching Mentoring Within our Professional Development Program you can choose between different educational formats depending on your needs and career goals. Training Coaching Mentoring Training sessions constitute the major part of our program. In one to two-day highly interactive workshops our experienced trainers instruct you in achieving expertise and mastering new skills in various fields, for instance about the best way to present yourself and your research results, teach at university level or organize your time. Coaching in small groups aims at developing your awareness and the power to reflect on your existing skills and knowledge and helping you to find the best way to enhance your performance. Our qualified coaches guide you in sharing, validating and improving your teaching practice in exchange with your peers or in determining your professional potential in order to devise a suitable career strategy. Mentoring aims to support female doctoral candidates in exploring and pursuing their career options. It brings them together with experienced professional mentors who offer guidance, encouragement and support. Mentors and mentees meet regularly throughout a one-year program and participate in specially designed workshops, coachings and networking events. 10

11 open door Talks Open Door Talks is a lecture series addressing all students, doctoral candidates and postdocs. In our Career Talks, experts from different occupational fields share their individual experiences and discuss with you how to make the right career move. Other Open Door Talks deal with funding opportunities for research stays abroad or postdoctoral projects. Quality assurance Our mission is to constantly improve our Professional Development Program and to enhance the quality of our doctoral candidates learning and development. Trainers and coaches are recruited and selected on the basis of their professional experience and outstanding qualifications. The course program is regularly reviewed and revised to meet the current needs and profiles of the course participants. Course assessment ensures the evaluator s anonymity. The results of course assessments are compared to those of other workshops from the same semester and analyzed with the trainers in a positive assessment climate, ensuring that feedback from the participants leads to concrete improvements. 14 research integrity Supporting Good Scientific Practice One of the core responsibilities of Dahlem Research School is to promote research integrity as the basis of all academic work. From the very beginning of your doctorate we support you in obtaining strategies and gaining confidence in conducting and presenting your research according to the standards of good scientific practice. We offer key courses that introduce you to the main principles of research integrity, i.e. conducting and communicating your research honestly and openly, employing reliable and accountable methods and being fair towards your colleagues and their work. April 2014, 9:00-17:00; optional 17:00-18:00 (Tag 2) Ort GEAS, Hittorfstraße 18, Raum K18 Ziele Inhalte Lesen ist die Schlüsselqualifikation für wissenschaftliches Arbeiten und im Berufsleben oft verbringen wir damit mehrere Stunden am Tag. Und doch beschäftigen wir uns meist nur einmal im Leben bewusst mit diesem Thema: als 6-Jährige in der Grundschule. Gut ausgebildete Erwachsene können mit intelligenten Techniken ihre Lesegeschwindigkeit sowie gleichzeitig Konzentration und Textverständnis deutlich steigern. Der Schwerpunkt des Kurses liegt auf der praktischen Einübung verbesserter Lesetechniken, insbesondere der Optimierung von Blickprozessen und dem Verständnisaufbau. For the specific challenge of reading scientific texts there will be an exercise at the end of the workshop for which you can bring your own text examples. Content Please note! Efficient reading techniques (chunking, anti-regression, etc.) Optimization of the eye s fixation processes Flexible reading strategies (mental processing of the text) Memory strategies Learning techniques related to reading efficiency Optimization of mental concentration The spoken language of the course is English! Participants reflect about their own approach to writing, deepen their knowledge of text structures, and learn tools for quality improvement. The course has long-term effects as participants do not only improve their writing efficiency, but also discover the enjoyable aspects of scientific writing. Juli 2014, 9:00-17:00 Ort Dahlem Research School, Hittorfstraße 16 Ziele Inhalte Methoden Publish or perish so lautet eine Grundregel des Wissenschaftsbetriebs, die zunehmend auch schon in der Promotionsphase gilt. Um hier zu bestehen, ist eine professionelle Haltung zum Schreiben unbedingt notwendig. In diesem Workshop werden die notwendigen Kenntnisse und Fertigkeiten für einen produktiven Schreibprozess vermittelt. Durch diagnostische Übungen zu den unterschiedlichen Phasen des Schreibprozesses reflektieren die Teilnehmer/innen ihr Schreibverhalten, um es zu optimieren und bewusster steuern zu können. Sie erhalten Hintergrundwissen aus der Schreibforschung und erproben in praktischen Übungen verschiedene Schreib- und Arbeitstechniken, um ihr eigenes Repertoire zu erweitern. Schreibwiderstände überwinden Ideen sammeln und strukturieren die Fragestellung präzisieren formulieren, ohne zu blockieren Feedback auf Textentwürfe geben und annehmen ein Ideal wissenschaftlicher Sprache entwickeln Die Arbeitsweise im Workshop ist praxisorientiert und fordert die Aktivität aller Teilnehmer/innen. Neben Impulsreferaten gibt es v.a. Schreibübungen, Kleingruppenarbeit, Plenumsdiskussion und Peerfeedback auf Textentwürfe. Eigentlich sind Sie mit Ihrem Projekt schon weit, Sie müssen es nur noch zu Papier bringen und wissen nicht wie? Sie kommen nur langsam voran, da Sie kontinuierlich kreative Vermeidungsstrategien entwickeln? Das Schreib-Coaching für Promovierende verbindet Theorie und Praxis: Sie lernen bewährte Schreibstrategien kennen und erhalten Anregungen zur Optimierung Ihrer Schreibpraxis sowie zur Überwindung von Motivationstiefs und Blockaden. Einzelne Methoden können Sie mit Hilfe einer Anleitung zu Hause ausprobieren. Inhalte Im Mittelpunkt steht der Austausch über das wissenschaftliche Schreiben. Sie diskutieren über Herausforderungen und den Umgang mit ihnen und lernen die Schreibstrategien der anderen TeilnehmerInnen kennen. Dadurch haben Sie Gelegenheit, sich mit KollegInnen zu vernetzen. 21 Scientific presentation Presenting training Disciplines Trainer for doctoral candidates at the beginning all John Kluempers, Ph.D Date Tue./Wed. 29/30 April 2014, 9:00-17:00 Venue Dahlem Research School, Hittorfstraße 16 Objectives This workshop is targeted at beginners and those wishing to brush up their presentation skills. Participants will hone their skills in giving scientific presentations in English and taking part in professional discussions following their own talks. The workshop will help increase confidence while presenting in the academic community and show the audience that they are confident. Content Methods In this workshop, participants will define a successful presentation prepare their own presentation give short presentations in front of their peers, topped off with a 5-7 presentation train how to use body language influentially and with success learn how to take questions, also difficult ones, in follow-up discussions Workshop participants implement communication and rhetorical strategies in their own presentations, by themselves, or in partner and group exercises. One main result is a 5-7 minute presentation with feedback from trainer and other Ph.D. students. Academic Performance 21

Mai 2014, 9:00-17:00 Ort Dahlem Research School, Hittorfstraße 16 Ziele Überzeugend vor Publikum zu präsentieren gehört zum täglichen Geschäft in der Wissenschaft. Bei vielen Menschen ist diese Situation jedoch nicht mit gesunder Nervosität verbunden, sondern mit ausgeprägter Auftrittsangst, die sie daran hindert, ihr fachliches Potenzial in größeren Runden zur Entfaltung zu bringen. In diesem Workshop lernen Sie, Ihre Ängste zu analysieren, realistisch einzuschätzen und zu akzeptieren. Durch neue Perspektiven verwandeln Sie Ihr Lampenfieber von einem Gegner zu einem Partner. Inhalte In der Gruppe bearbeiten Sie u.a. die folgenden Fragen: Welche Ursachen hat Ihr Lampenfieber? Welche Rollen nehmen Sie in Ihrem Alltag ein und wie bewerten Sie diese? Exercises are used throughout the course to ensure that participants can immediately put skills into practice. Participants develop strategies for engaging listeners and tailoring information to the audience. Furthermore, participants learn improvisation techniques and practi ce speaking impromptu in formal role-play settings such as site visits, conferences, panels and social events. Juli 2014, 9:00-17:00 Ort Tag 1: TOPOI, Hittorfstraße 18; Tag 2: DRS, Hittorfstraße 16 Ziele Inhalte Unser persönliches Auftreten bestimmt jede Begegnung mit anderen Menschen, ob als Redner/in, als Teil eines Teams, im Bewerbungsgespräch oder bei einer privaten Begegnung: You never get a second chance for the first impression! In diesem Workshop geht es darum, Ihr Bewusstsein für den eigenen Körper, die eigene Stimme und Sprechweise zu verbessern. Sie entdecken noch ungenutzte Potenziale und verringern die Diskrepanz zwischen Fremd- und Selbstwahrnehmung.
