3 O ccupancy Comfort with Economy and Flexibility The fan coil unit controller offers three modes of operation - occupied (comfort), standby (temporarily unoccupied) and unoccupied (night and weekends). These occupancy modes can be set from an operator workstation or network controller on a Metasys network, from another device on the LONWORKS network or controlled by the room occupants from a local room command module. In the simplest option, a locally connected TM-9100 room command module provides the occupant with set point and fan speed control, and a button to request the occupied mode. Set point adjustment can be limited within a certain range to allow occupants control over their environment, but not to compromise energy savings. flexibility to the local occupant and allows maximum energy savings when there is no supervisory system installed. Whatever local options are chosen, the controller operating mode can also be scheduled by a Metasys NCM or other LONWORKS compatible supervisory system. A window open sensor may be connected to the controller to switch it to the Energy Hold-off mode to avoid energy waste. The controller may also be set to off by the supervisory network when the space is not in use. For applications where the cooling coil or pipes are located in the ceiling, a condensation sensor may be connected to switch off cooling if water is condensing on the pipes. A second option uses a room command module on the LONWORKS network to set the occupancy mode by occupant command, and the module may have a digital display to show the current room temperature, set point, fan speed and mode of operation. This option gives maximum Every controller has a low space temperature detection function as a standard feature that switches on the heating to the maximum value in Emergency Heat mode, overriding any other automatic or manual mode of the controller except safety interlocks. F an Control Options In addition to the option of a single-speed, threespeed or variable-speed fan, the controller may also be configured to run the fan only when heating or only when cooling, or to inhibit heating or cooling when the fan is not running. W inter/summer Compensation Feature When the controller is connected to a network and is receiving the outdoor air temperature value, the room set point may be automatically adjusted on cold winter days or hot summer days An option is also available to keep the fan running continuously in occupied and standby modes or to allow the fan to cycle on and off as the space temperature reaches the given setpoint. to reduce energy consumption yet maintain occupancy comfort. In winter the set point temperature may be increased to offset the effect of cold surfaces in exterior zones. H ardware Configuration to Match Applications Various controller hardware models are available to match a wide range of fan coil unit, radiator and chilled ceiling control applications. Models are available with 24 VAC or 230 VAC power supply. Each model provides a specific combination of outputs to control heating, cooling and a fan. All models accept local inputs for the control of occupancy mode, temperature set point, fan speed override and shutoff from a window contact or condensation sensor. The space temperature sensor may be mounted in the fan coil unit or in the room command module. Product Bulletin TCU Fan Coil Unit Controller 3

The bases are installed first and all the wiring completed and checked before installing the electronic circuits that are located in the controller and room module covers. C onvenient Configuration Setup The fan coil unit controller is delivered with the appropriate software and hardware configuration and with factory-set parameters such that no on-site programming is necessary to set the fan coil unit into operation. A software tool is available, however, which runs on a laptop or notebook PC, to enable the installer to adjust operating parameters such as occupancy mode set points and control loop tuning parameters, if required, and to provide online data for the verification of the control sequence. A record of all parameter changes can be stored in memory or on diskette. This procedure provides the easiest and safest way to install the control system and avoids accidental damage to the electronic circuits when being mounted on the fan coil unit in the factory or on the building site. Once configured, commissioned, and connected to a network, the controller s operating parameters may be changed from a Metasys operator workstation or other LONWORKS compatible supervisory device. As the controller is fully LONMARK compliant, it may be connected to any LONWORKS network and configured to communicate with other devices on the network using any LONMARK compliant network configuration tool. The network variables and configuration properties that are available for interoperability with other LONWORKS compatible devices on the network are listed in tables 3, 4 and 5. 4 Product Bulletin TCU Fan Coil Unit Controller

N etworking Capabilities As powerful as the controller is by itself, your facility will benefit even more when fan coil unit controllers are integrated into a larger Metasys network. The TCU controller can be connected to a LONWORKS network that is monitored by a Metasys network control module (NCM). The NCM can be programmed to provide added energy management and supervisory control capabilities, such as optimal start, demand limiting, trend log, run-time totalization, and more. The Metasys Dynamic Data Access networking feature, available from the network control module, makes all information from each controller available throughout the facility. This makes it possible, for example, to reset supply water temperatures based on the load demands of the fan coil unit controllers, and to adjust the room set points based on a common outdoor air temperature for the building or each zone of the building. Dynamic Data Access also makes sensor values, operating status, and any other parameters in the controller available to operators at Metasys workstations anywhere in your facility. 6 Product Bulletin TCU Fan Coil Unit Controller

7 I ntegrated Room Control At the local room level, the fan coil unit controller can communicate environmental conditions to other LONMARK compliant control devices on the LONWORKS network and receive commands from local operator devices. For example, the controller can send a positioning signal to a sunblind controller to reflect the sun s energy when the space temperature is above the comfort setpoint. It can also receive an occupancy signal from a motion detector or send a signal to a lighting controller to switch on the lights in the room. A TCU controller may also be configured as a slave to another TCU controller allowing parallel operation of two or more fan coil units from one room command module and room temperature sensor. This feature allows the flexibility to easily change the assignments of room sensors to controllers when rooms are remodelled or partitions are reconfigured. Integrated room control provides a fully coordinated system to control the local environment for occupant comfort, using natural sun energy when possible and conserving all sources of generated energy when the room is not occupied. O pen Communications and Interoperability with LONWORKS When this controller is installed in a fan coil unit, the LONWORKS communication capability means that the unit and its controller can be integrated into a LONWORKS network in your facility at any time. LONWORKS is an open standard for field communications, and interoperability with other LONWORKS compatible devices is assured by the LONMARK Interoperability Guidelines. Using the LONWORKS technology in the Metasys system allows you to integrate third party controllers and devices into the facility-wide management system. 9 Installation Guide TCU Fan Coil Unit Controller with 24 VAC Power Supply Issue Date 1201 TCU Fan Coil Unit Controller With 24 VAC Power Supply Theory of Operation The TCU series of LONWORKS Neuron microprocessor-based controllers is designed for the control of space heating and cooling systems and a single-speed, multi-speed or variable-speed fan. The targeted applications include fan coil units (FCUs), chilled ceilings and radiator or baseboard heating systems. The controller can regulate water valves, one or two-stage electric heating elements, or a small direct expansion (DX) cooling unit where the compressor has its own short cycle protection. Certain models also have an output for local lighting control based on space occupancy. The space comfort temperature set point, temporary occupancy mode and fan speed may be set from a TM-9150/9160/9170 series room command module, or from a LONWORKS compatible room command module such as the RCM Series from Johnson Controls, when the controller is connected to a LONWORKS network. Energy may be saved by connecting an occupancy sensor to switch the controller to standby mode when the space is temporarily unoccupied, and a window open sensing contact may be connected to switch the controller to off mode. A low temperature limit protection feature is built into all controllers that have heating control. The controller complies with the LONMARK interoperability guidelines for sharing data with other LONMARK compliant network devices, and uses the FTT10 transceiver for the Free Topology, twisted pair physical network configuration. The network software application interface follows the Space Comfort Controller Profile (Reference 85.01) and many of the optional network variables have been included to enable the implementation of a fully integrated control network at the individual room level. The controller is factory-configured to provide space temperature control with default operating parameters so that no external setup devices are necessary. However, a software package (Comm Pro) for a PC is available to verify the correct operation of the controller and to modify operating parameters, if necessary. This tool is also available as a software plug-in package for any LNS-based network management tool. This document is subject to change without notice. 1

10 The winter and summer compensation feature is enabled when the controller receives the outdoor air temperature value via the LONWORKS network, and the various modes of operation of the controller may be set by time scheduling programs or control processes in a LONWORKS compatible supervisory system. In particular, the controller may be connected to the METASYS Network Control Module (NCM) which provides comprehensive supervisory features for LONWORKS networks and integrates the LONMARK compliant controller into a facility-wide control and management network. 12 Tools Needed Mounting flat-head screwdriver 4 mm screws drill See Figure 1: TCU Controller Dimensions The TCU controller is typically mounted in the fan coil unit enclosure or in an electrical closet or the ceiling void in the space being controlled. The mounting location must be clean and dry, and not subject to extreme heat or cold.! CAUTION: Electronic circuits are sensitive to electrostatic discharge. Take suitable precautions. The TCU controller comprises a cover with all the electronic circuits, and a base with the wiring terminals. To separate the two pieces, gently press the two cover tabs as you pull the cover away from the base. Keep the cover level with the base until it is free to avoid damage to the terminals and pins. Put the cover back into the anti-static bag in which the controller was delivered and place it in a safe place while the base is mounted and wired. For panel or wall surface mounting, place the mounting base at the desired position, and mark the location of the four mounting holes. Drill small guide holes in the mounting surface and fix the base to the surface using the 4-mm diameter self-tapping screws provided. See Figure 2: TCU Model Base For DIN rail mounting, place the controller on the upper edge of the rail and press the controller firmly against the rail until the springloaded clip engages the lower edge of the rail. To remove the controller, insert a screw driver into the clip at the base of the controller and pull the clip downwards to release. Alternatively, lift the controller upwards against the spring of the retaining clip and pull forward from the top. To reassemble the controller, place the cover over the base, carefully aligning the guide lugs and the terminal pins, and press the cover firmly against the base until the two cover tabs engage in the base. 4 Installation Guide TCU Fan Coil Unit Controller with 24 VAC Power Supply

13 Wiring! CAUTION: Connections to terminals of this device may carry up to 240 VAC. Isolate both live and neutral supply lines (requires use of double-pole isolator switch) before servicing. The installation and electrical wiring must conform to local codes and should be carried out by authorized personnel only. Before connecting or disconnecting any wires to the mounting base of the controller, ensure that all power supplies have been switched off and all wires are potential-free to prevent equipment damage and avoid electrical shock. Terminations are made on the terminal blocks, at the top and bottom of the mounting base, which accept up to 1.5mm 2 / 16 AWG wires. Follow the wiring diagrams shown in figures 3 to10. Use a minimum wire size of 0.8 mm / 20 AWG for sensor connections, and size other wires according to the current load. If multi-stranded wire is used for 230 VAC connections, a metal sleeve must be crimped onto the exposed metal strands before inserting the wire into the terminal. Separate extra low voltage (electrically safe) wiring from power line voltage wiring. A distinctive colour such as white or pink is recommended for extra low voltage wiring within equipment cabinets. Keep all wires and cables within enclosures as short as possible and tie in position or lay them in wiring guides. It is recommended that sensors and actuators are mounted within 50m / 165 ft. of the controller. Do not mount the TCU controller or run any TCU cables close to transformers or high frequency generating equipment. Complete and verify all wiring connections before refitting the cover of the controller onto the mounting base and continuing with the installation procedure. 24 VAC Power Supply The 24 VAC supply must be stable and not shared with other switched inductive loads. When multiple loads are connected to one transformer, wire each load from the transformer separately so that any possible disturbances from one load will have minimal effect on other loads. The transformer and cabling must be sized such that the 24 VAC power supply at the controller will be within the specified tolerances (see Specifications and Technical Data). If one side of the 24 VAC supply is connected to ground/earth, this side must be connected to terminal 3 of the controller, marked 24 VAC Common in the wiring drawings. No other terminals of the controller (except the terminal) may be connected to ground/earth. Installation Guide TCU Fan Coil Unit Controller with 24 VAC Power Supply 5

14 Earth/Ground Connection LONWORKS Network Connect the earth/ground terminal (labeled ) to a clean electrical ground point. This connection provides a discharge path for any high voltage interference that could otherwise damage the controller or the LONWORKS network. Do not connect the LONWORKS network cable shield (if installed) to the controller s earth/ground terminal. See figures 3-10: Figure 3: AD-TCU1205-xxxx Controller Wiring Figure 4: AD-TCU2205-xxxx Controller Wiring Figure 5: AD-TCU1215-xxxx Controller Wiring Figure 6: AD-TCU2215-xxxx Controller Wiring Figure 7: AD-TCU1225-xxxx Controller Wiring Figure 8: AD-TCU2225-xxxx Controller Wiring Figure 9: TCU Controller Wiring to TM-91xx Room Command Module with Integral NTC Sensor Figure 10: TCU Controller Wiring to Room Command Module with Unit Mounted NTC Sensor The LONWORKS network wiring must be installed in accordance with the LONMARK Guidelines for the Free Topology physical layer of the network. Refer also to the LONWORKS Network Layout Technical Bulletin in the LONWORKS Technical Manual (FAN 1162) for details of the engineering and installation of the LONWORKS network for the Metasys Network Controller Module (NCM). If shielded cable is used, install a 470 Kohm, 1/4W, ±10% metal-film resistor between the shield and a clean electrical ground point at one location only (normally at the Metasys NCM350/361 or other accessible location). Note: If a LONWORKS network has not been installed in the building and the controller is not easily accessible, always install a short cable with a terminal block or connector at one end to extend the TCU network communications port to a convenient location. The TCU controller can only be monitored for commissioning and troubleshooting purposes via the network communications port. Hardware Inputs The TCU controller is designed to accept passive, volt-free inputs that are electrically isolated from the 24 VAC supply and earth/ground potential. The TM series of Room Command Modules is recommended for use with the controller. The space temperature sensor and the local set point and fan speed override controls may be incorporated into a custom fan coil unit control panel. Refer to Specifications and Technical Data for the technical characteristics of the components required, and to Figure 9 for a typical wiring diagram. The controller is delivered with wire bridges across the inputs for Occupancy and Window contacts (terminals 7, 8, 9). Only remove a bridge if the input is wired to a sensor. 6 Installation Guide TCU Fan Coil Unit Controller with 24 VAC Power Supply

15 If a hardware space temperature sensor is not connected, it is recommended to install a 2700 ohm resistor across terminals 20 and 21 to prevent the controller from defaulting to Space Low Temperature Status if the network sensor fails. Refer to the NTC K2 Resistance table in the TCU Fan Coil Unit Controller Technical Bulletin if you wish the space temperature to default to another specific value. Hardware Outputs Startup Commissioning The TCU controller provides 24 VAC power for 24 V triac-driven outputs and for actuators connected to analog outputs. The connected actuators must not derive power from another source unless galvanic isolation from the control signal of the controller is provided. Do not connect any of the controller wires to earth/ground at the actuator location. When all wiring connections to the controller base have been made and verified, carefully mount the controller cover onto the mounting base and press firmly until the cover tabs engage. Apply 24 VAC power to the controller and the green Power LED on the controller cover should be lit. The red Service LED should blink once and then remain off. If the Service LED remains on or continues to blink, refer to the Commissioning and Trouble-shooting sections in the TCU Fan Coil Unit Controller Technical Bulletin. For information on commissioning and trouble shooting procedures, refer to the TCU Fan Coil Unit Controller Technical Bulletin.
