V. Who is (still) interested in the quality of teaching and learning? Overview ASIIN s member organizations share the conviction that a sound academic education is the basis of modern societies sustainable development. Thus, ASIIN seeks to ensure and raise the quality of academic education as well as to make the quality of academic and continuing education transparent. What do we mean, though, by quality in higher education? What are suitable tools for making quality visible and transparent? It is these questions that we want to explore with representatives of higher education institutions, associations and the professional world during this year s annual conference. We would like to reflect on the efforts of the past few years to raise

2 the quality of academic teaching and learning. Furthermore we would like to identify challenges to be faced by higher education institutions and discuss their impact on internal and external quality assurance and -enhancement in higher education. Finally we want to get ideas how to adjust internal tools at HEI and within an agency for meeting these challenges. Higher education institutions are increasingly developing distinctive profiles and presenting themselves on the respective national and international stage. Consequently, they need to create transparency on the quality of their services to a wide range of stakeholders at minimal cost. ASIIN responds to this need with its model of connectable procedures in internal and external quality assurance and enhancement in higher and further education.
