6 Culture Sightseeings Aalbäumle Looking for a chance to see Aalen s panorama? Hike up the Langert (Aalen s landmark hill), enjoy the scenery during spring, summer or autumn and climb up the viewing platform tower Aalbäumle. The original 26 meter high wooden tower was built in 1898 and was renovated to its present form in Climbing up to 24 meter allows you to view a wide panoramic landscape stretching from Aalen and Welland hill to the Kaiserberge mountain range. Tiefer Stollen Have you ever experienced being 400 meters under the ground? Have you seen a place where iron ore was once extracted? Or learned the extraction process? You can experience all of this in Tiefer Stollen. The mine tour train will take you on a trip to another world. You ll be able to walk with the guided tour through thrilling tunnels, shafts and passages. Here you can learn how the life was then, before everything is automated. If you feel adventurous enough some day, you can take the special tour. Contact the Visitor s Office for it. Tip: Inside the tunnel system the air is extremely clean and dust free, which is used for Asthma Therapy. Tiefer Stollen Erzhäusle Aalen

7 City Church St. Nikolaus Walking through the city centre, you might have noticed the city church. The baroque transversal hall of the church was designed by Johann Michael Keller. It was first mentioned in history in 1340 but it became a victim to the city s fire in Since then they only partly rebuilt the church. In 1767 Johann Adam Groß redeveloped the building. Schloss Fachsenfeld The history of Schloss Fachsenfeld (castle Fachsenfeld) dates back to the 16th Century. Around 1857 the castle was rebuilt and expanded. Since 2000 an annual event takes place in the castle, which includes special exhibitions, readings, and concert. So it is possible to visit a castle that is still rich in culture. Schloss Fachsenfeld offers a beautiful landscape park and portrays a mixture between history, art, culture and nature. 8 Culture Kultur Museums Museums are part of history; they are a way to remember what happened and to keep in touch with city roots. The city of Aalen has three important museums that you can visit on your free time and learn from the history of this roman city. Limes Museum The Limes Museum Aalen is located on the grounds of the Roman cavalry fort of Aalen. It is considerate a UNESCO World Heritage, which gives the museum distinction. This museum exposes a collection of artefacts found around this roman region in Germany. Reichsstädter Straße oder St.-Johann-Straße Urwelt Museum Urweltmuseum (pre-historic museum) is the largest municipal museum of geology and paleontology in Baden- Württemberg. This museum exists since 1977 and it s located in the marketplace of the historical old city of Aalen in the spy tower of the city centre. Haus der Stadtgeschichte This museum is the house of history of Aalen. Since 2008, is located where a cemetery of the 19th century was. 9 Theatre Theatres are considerate as the expression of arts in every sense. As every city in Germany, Aalen has its own theatre in the heart of the city centre. Theater der Stadt Aalen It was established in 1991 and it is considerate as the youngest and smallest theatre in Germany. It has around 400 events in the year and six compromised actors. Eduard-Pfeiffer-Str / Kino am Kocher Want to see something different than a Hollywood movie? Kino am Kocher is the independent cinema of Aalen, playing from documentaries to foreign and cultural movies. In the webpage you can see schedules, prices and current offers. Schleifbrückenstr / Regular Events Germany is the country with the most holiday days in whole Europe and Aalen is a multicultural city with plenty events throughout the year with the purpose of celebration and have fun, you can attend from carnivals to musical and cultural festivals. Reichsstädter Tage This festival is held on the second weekend of September each year since 1975 and is known for being the biggest festival of the Ostwürttemberg region. Here you can taste the traditional and regional food, drinks and listen to their music. It is held in the Marktplatz (Marketplace / City Centre). 10

11 Roman Days This festival takes place in the Limes Museum in September, where once the Roman well-known forts existed. Nowadays, Roman times of 1800 years ago are brought back to life with gladiators, musicians and merchants leaving every viewer astonished. St.-Johann-Straße / International Festival This festival takes place every year in July and is a summer festival full of colour, music, food and people where you can experience customs including music and food from different places in the world, all in one place. Aalener Marktplatz Aalener Frühlingsfest This annual spring festival is held in the end of April in the Greut- Fairground. It is a festival where you can enjoy the food, snacks and the attractions that are offered. Special offers can be found in the programme. It is fun for the whole family. Greut-Festplatz Aalener Jazzfest This festival takes place on the second week of November. Throughout summer, there are also individual concerts of well-known artists take place. Aalen Fasching A typical German carnival takes place on January in Friedhofstraße and there you can see allegoric cars and unique costumes that certainly will entertain both adults and children. 12 Sport Sport plays a special significant role in the city of Aalen. There are 94 sport clubs. No matter whether you are a beginner or already belong to the advanced ones. The brochure "Sport in Aalen" gives detailed information on this matter. Leisure Time VFR Aalen The VFR Aalen is the leading football team in the region. After an average first round, they came back with an outstanding second part. That means that they moved up in the 2. Bundesliga. A visit to the SCHOLZ- ARENA, where they play their home matches, is therefore highly recommended. "Thomas-Zander-Halle." Indoor Climbing Centre Aalen Rock climbing fans and also beginners are able to go indoor climbing in the Reiner-Schwebel-climbing gym in Aalen. The indoor climbing centre with a climbing area of 400m² and a climbing height of 12 meters, has 80 different routs which are separated in different climbing severities. In addition, the climbing gym offers a boulder area of 40m². Wrestling (Ringen) The benchmark of this sport area could be the KSV Aalen 05, which is one of the most successful wrestling clubs in Germany. In the past, they won several of times the championship. All home matches are held in the Fitness Centre A fitness centre is a perfect alternative for those, who don t want to join a sports club but want to stay in a great shape. One of them is the Clever-Fit. It offers a special offer to students of the HTW Aalen. 12

13 Thermal Bath and Swimming Pools For those who would like to cool off or relax, they should try the swimming pools in Aalen. The city offers three outdoor swimming pool, two indoor swimming pools and one thermal bath. Open Air Pool Hirschbach The open air baths of Hirschbach offers 4 pools; sport pool, jumping pool, non-swimmers and kids pool. There is also a water-slide (68 meters long), a sunbathing area, a playground, a table tennis tables, a beach-volleyball court, a street ball court and a kiosk. It s opened from May till September at 9 o clock. They offer special entrance price for school and university students. Freibad Hirschbach Hirschbachstraße 68 Limes-Thermen The Limes Thermal Baths offers various wellness programmes The baths consists of four indoor and one outdoor pool. Moreover they also have sauna area, physiotherapy programme, foot care, massage and Kneipp facility treatments. They offer special entrance price for school and university students. 14 Leisure Time Bike and Hiking Trails Kocher-Jagst-Bike Trail Only a few kilometers apart the Kocher and Jagst Rivers come close to each other near Aalen in the Ostalb region and flow into the Neckar almost at the same point by Bad Friedrichshall. The bike path leads through Hohenlohe, the land of castles and Heilbronner land. You can cycle along the vineyards and meadow, through the forests from the spring to the estuary of the rivers. Pretty villages and historic towns invite you to stay and offer a warm welcome for everyone. This path offers different routes that vary from 38 km to 67 km. The complete length of the Limes is 164 km in Baden -Wuerttemberg and 62 kilometres are located in the Ostalbkreis. Here, the Romans have left many traces. History fans are able to walk in footsteps of the Romans through Limes Hike Trail. It takes the hiker along the UNESCO world heritage Limes through Halheim, Pfahlheim, Röhlingen, Rainau- Dalkingen and Hüttlingen towards Böbingen and Schwäbisch Gmünd. 15 Aalen Panorama Trail Aalen is captivating because of its landscapes. The transition between fields and meadows to the wooded Albtrauf is an attraction and invitation for visitors to discover the beautiful nature. The 30 kilometres Panorama Trail of Aalen offers visitors an opportunity to explore the countryside on the marked trails. For experience hikers, the trail is certainly a good one day performance. For a family outing or a long walk is the panoramic hike trail divided into individual stages. From the city centre each of the sections can be conveniently reached by bus. Those who feel hungry and thirsty can take breaks in the local restaurant, pub and huts along the route. In summer months the open air pool Spiesel in Wasseralfingen and Open Air Pool Unterrombach offer several options near the hike trail to refresh and cool down. 16 Lakes In summer, it is really fun to be under the sun. Go for a picnic, sunbathing, rent a boat or go for a swim in refreshing water. Within a short time visitors can reach the Bucher Stausee. However, Itzelberger See is also worth the visit! Leisure Time Bucher Stausee Bucher Stausee located around 9,3 km away from Aalen. To be exact it is located in the recreational area of Tip: Wasserlehrpfad: The Water Organisation Obere Jagst created along the paved road on the East bank 10 informational stations. These informational stations display why the lake is important to the flora and fauna. Erlebnispfad: The trail is designed for families, and older and disabled people. It provides activities that allow you to enjoy the special motion, sound, and acoustic experience. The trail let you to refresh your senses. Rainau Buch. The lake with a 27 hectare surface area is surrounded by a completely flat, barrier free hiking path. In the swim and play area, there is a 150 meter long beach with sunbathing and grilling areas, showers, clothing booths, bathroom facilities, as well as play and exercise areas are available. 17 Itzelberger See The lake is a popular recreation area in Itzelberg, Koenigsbronn. It was created artificially by the monks of the monastery in purpose to support their fish farming. 18 Leisure Time Travel Destinations Marienburg Niederalfingen The Marienburg (Castle of our Lady) is located in Niederalfingen, which is a little town part of Hüttlingen - high above the Kocher Valley. It was probably built around 1050 by the Lords of Ahelfingen. Through the numerous changes of ownership, the neglected castle came as property of Count Fugger of Augsburg. This then lead to a rebuild of the castle from 1571 to 1578 through Veit Milser. They rebuilt the castle to a feudal castle with Renaissance style elements. Today is the castle a property of the state of Baden-Württemberg and is used mainly by the Katholische Studierende Jugend (KSJ Catholic Student Youth) for their conference centre and schools retreat. Marienburg Niederalfingen Fuggerstraße Hüttlingen Schloss Kapfenburg Kapfenburg Castle is located in Ostalbkreis on a mountain top of Albtrauf, which is 130 metres above the city Lauchheim. The Kapfenburg was never destroyed. Since the change of function from protective castle to home with administrative centre, it was made into an architectural ensemble through renovations and additions, which unifies completely different eras of architecture. Since October 1999, the Internationale Musikschulakademie Kulturzentrum Schloss Kapfenburg is located where they used to hold the German Ordenfest (imperial festivities). Because of that Kapfenburg is for many people from in and outside the country a place to meet and produce music and creative work. 19 Neresheim The city lies between Aalen and Nördlingen in the eastern part of the Swabian Alb. Neresheim has a strong Catholic roots and affected by its Benedict Abbey (Benediktinerabtei). Neresheim is nationally recognised as a leisure area. Because of its worldfamous abbey church of Balthasar Neumann with ceiling paintings from Martin Knoller this place is worth the visit and a popular excursion and holiday destination. The city is surrounded by lovely countryside, forests, wacholder heath, dry valley, and uncommon flora and fauna. Nördlingen Nördlingen is a former free imperial city on the Romantic Road. The town centre is very unique because it is surrounded by completely walk able city wall.
