17 Bildungsstandards: Englisch, 8. Schulstufe l methodisch-didaktisches Aufgabenbeispiel BMBWK, ÖSZ CODE 033 UNTERLAGE FÜR DIE LEHRKRAFT TAPE SCRIPT - I m talking to three young people who are the children of immigrants to Britain. Stefan is from Poland, Tessa from Jamaica, I think. Is that right, Tessa? - Yes, that s right from Jamaica. - And then finally Khalida from Pakistan. All of you have been living in Britain since you were very young, but I d like to know what it was like for your parents coming to Britain and settling down in a strange country. What about your parents, Stefan, have they told you anything about it? - Oh, yes, they ve told me quite a lot. They came to Britain from Poland. I was just a baby at the time. I think the first few months were very difficult for them. I think the main problem was the language. Neither of them could speak a word of English when they arrived. - And did they learn it quickly? - No. Not really. They found it quite difficult. Even when I was quite a young child I always had to go to the doctor s and dentist s with my parents so I could explain what was wrong with them. It was quite a problem. - Did they have difficulties making friends? - Not really, because there were quite a lot of Poles living near to us. They also helped my parents to find somewhere to live, so that wasn t a problem either. - What about work? How did they manage to find work if they couldn t speak English? - Well, at the beginning that was a big problem. My dad couldn t go to interviews or even read the job advertisements in the newspaper. Then they were very lucky. My dad got a job as a gardener for a rich Polish family in London and my mum worked part-time cleaning the local Catholic church. - And do they have any problems now with living in Britain? - No, not really. Of course, they still miss Poland, but on the whole they re very happy here. - What about your parents, Tessa? What was coming to London like for them? - Oh, I think that it was really hard at the beginning. It was very difficult for them because they are black, of course. - How was it difficult? Can you give us some examples?
18 UNTERLAGE FÜR DIE LEHRKRAFT CODE Well, first of all it was almost impossible to find somewhere to live. A lot of people didn t want to rent rooms to them because of their colour. - How did they find somewhere to live then? - In the end some people we knew from Jamaica found rooms for them, but there were only two rooms and they were in very poor condition. Another problem was the weather. They arrived in London in December. There was 10 centimetres of snow on the ground and it was really cold. They felt very miserable for a long time. - Have they got used to the weather yet? - No, not really. They still hate the winter in Britain. - What about your parents, Khalida? Is the weather a problem for them, too? - I don t think so. At least, there are bigger problems. - What sort of problems? - Well, when they arrived there were problems connected with religion. There wasn t a mosque near our home and so they had to travel a long way every Friday to get to the mosque. Then the man my father worked for didn t want to give him time off work to go to the mosque. - What kind of work does your father do? - He works in a small clothes factory. - Was it a problem for him to find a job? - No, I don t think so. He is very good at making clothes so he found the job quite quickly. - Talking of clothes. I notice you re wearing your traditional Pakistani clothes.does that cause you any problems? - Yes, actually it does sometimes. First of all, people stare at you when you re walking down the streets and even laugh or shout at you. Then I and the other Pakistani girls once had a big problem in school. Our headmaster didn t want us to wear the trousers that all Pakistani girls have to wear. He wanted us all to wear the normal English school uniform. - Really? So what happened about that? - Well, for my parents and others this was a really big problem. For three days all the Pakistani families refused to let the girls go to school and in the end the headmaster agreed to let us wear our trousers under our school uniform. Right, well, thank you all very much for the interview. It s been really interesting. Bildungsstandards: Englisch, 8. Schulstufe l methodisch-didaktisches Aufgabenbeispiel BMBWK, ÖSZ

This time, Duncan visited a travel agent to get information for our listeners. That s right, I did. And here s the report. [sound effects: sounds of being recorded, in a travel agency] Duncan: Ms Thomson: Duncan: Ms Thomson: Duncan: Ms Thomson: Duncan: Ms Thomson: Duncan: Ms Thomson: Duncan: Hello, Ms Thomson. You re a travel agent in Glasgow. Could you give us some tips for summer holidays? I ll be happy to, Duncan. This year, many people are going to Spain and France. And there are a lot of people staying home. Why is that? Some people don t want to travel by plane. Others don t want to spend a lot of money. And the summer was so beautiful in Britain last year, so they think it will be nice this year. I see. Have you got any tips for people who want to stay home? My tip is to plan the holiday very carefully. At home, it is easy to watch the telly all day, so it is important to have a plan. What can people do? There are a lot of festivals in the summer music festivals, film festivals. And there are special summer activities for children, too. Of course, the local swimming pool is always a good idea. And it s helpful to make a reading list. Many people read books when they are on holiday, but they don t at home. So, if you re not going somewhere for a holiday, you should make time to read at home. It s very relaxing. What about for people who are going somewhere? This year, the beaches in Spain are very popular. It s important to take along sun protection, though! We Britons don t take the sun very well! And, of course, it s good to drink a lot of water when the weather is hot. It s best to drink bottled water. You never know if the water is safe. Thank you for your time, Ms Thomson. 12

Patti: Sometimes I go and play tennis in a park close to my house or I ride my bike or play table tennis with my sister. Interviewer: And then what do you do? Patti: Then I do my homework. That usually takes me one or two hours. After that, I usually help my mum prepare the dinner. Interviewer: And how do you spend the rest of the evening? Patti: After dinner, Mum and Dad watch the news on TV and I usually go to my bedroom and listen to some music. But when there s a good film on, I come down again and watch it. I love romantic films. When a film I want to see is very late, Mum videos it and I watch it at the weekend. Interviewer: And do you ever go out in the evening? Patti: Number two: Mark On Saturdays I go to the school disco. Now and again I go to birthday parties, but I m not allowed to go to parties when there are no grown-ups there. Interviewer: How do you spend your time when you come home from school, Mark? Mark: The first thing I do is go to my room, put on some music and do my homework. Interviewer: And how long does that take you? Mark: It usually takes me about half an hour to an hour and a half. Interviewer: And then what do you do?
35 UNTERLAGE FÜR DIE LEHRKRAFT CODE 073 Mark: Then I usually play around with my computer for most of the evening. My dad keeps telling me to do some sport, but I don t really like sport. Only on TV. Interviewer: Do you watch a lot of TV? Mark: I watch a lot of sport on TV. And I love science-fiction films. I watch them all. Interviewer: And do you go out in the evenings at all? Mark: I don t go out to parties or discos. My sister does a lot, but I don t. My friend s dad has got a house by a lake. In the summer, my friend s dad often takes us there on Saturdays and picks us up on Sunday. We have a lot of fun and at night we tell each other horror stories. Then we re both scared. Schulstufe l methodisch-didaktisches Aufgabenbeispiel BMBWK, ÖSZ CODE 078 UNTERLAGE FÜR DIE LEHRKRAFT TAPE SCRIPT Interviewer: Before you started your project, Jane, what did you do about the rubbish at your school? Jane: For years we didn t do anything really. We just threw whatever we had into the wastepaper baskets. Interviewer: I see. Jane: Yeah, well, anyway, last year some of us founded the Green Circle. It was a group of kids who wanted to do something for the environment. First we all thought about big things like saving the whales, and fighting for clean rivers, but then one of our teachers said, Why don t you start right here? Interviewer: What did you think about that? Jane: At first, some of us said, That s not important enough, we have to do something bigger, but then we understood that we did a lot of talking and wrote a lot of letters about the big things, but here at school we could actually DO something. Interviewer: So what was the next step? Jane: Well, we started to do something. We went round the school and collected all the waste paper and the rubbish, we d got here at school. And there was a lot. We looked through it and, with the help of somebody from the local environment group, we started to sort out the stuff - you know, paper and organic waste and plastic stuff and so on. Interviewer: To do what exactly? Jane: Errm, just to see what kind of waste we d got here at the school. The next step was to organise bins for all the different kinds of waste. That was not too difficult because we got a lot of outside help there. Interviewer: What was difficult about your project then? Jane: The most difficult thing was to get the students to put the waste where it belonged. I mean, we couldn t ask them to walk into the yard every time they wanted to throw away a piece of paper or a bit of apple. So in every classroom, there was a bin, which was used for everyday stuff - but not paper any more. We simply put two boxes into every classroom: one for paper and one for organic stuff. And we had a bag for cans and plastic.
40 UNTERLAGE FÜR DIE LEHRKRAFT CODE 078 Interviewer: Really? Did that work? Jane: At the beginning it worked very well. We had a nice article in the local paper, and everybody was proud of our school and what we were doing. After a time, things became more difficult again, but we re a fairly large group, and we check on things, and, most of all, we try to talk to people and win friends for the Green Circle. So in nearly every class there are a few kids who help us, or who are in the Green Circle. I believe the most important thing is that you talk to people again and again and again, and after a time they get used to an idea, and they do what you ask them to do. Interviewer: Thank you very much for talking to us, Jane. Jane: Sure. Bildungsstandards: Englisch, 8. Schulstufe l methodisch-didaktisches Aufgabenbeispiel BMBWK, ÖSZ

Reporter: Good afternoon, sir! You are our Mr Healthy of the Year! You have changed your life completely. Why did you decide to do that? Mr Healthy: Two years ago I worked long hours for an international company, I started to have health problems, especially with my heart. I drank alcohol very often and I smoked 50 cigarettes a day! When I had to run to the bus or walk up some stairs I was always out of breath. Many everyday activities became a problem for me. Reporter: So what did you do? Mr Healthy: Well, one day I realised: this is not the life I want to live! Two years ago I got a new job and I changed my life completely: Since that day I have been working as a computer specialist for a new company. I try not to work more than 40 hours a week too much work is not healthy and of course I need enough time to do the sports I have started to do. At first I tried to walk a lot, and during the past year I ve been running three times a week. I love running and it really is a great start for my day. Reporter: Has sport really changed your life? Mr Healthy: Since I stopped smoking and drinking too much alcohol, I have been a new man: I have been riding my bike every day since last March and I have been travelling a lot. The most interesting place I have been to is Darwin, a tropical town in the north of Australia. I really had a great time there! Now that I am doing a different job and more sports I feel much healthier; I can even say I am a happier person now! I am very proud that I ve changed my life! Reporter: Well, that sounds really great! Thanks for the interview! Mr Healthy: You are welcome!

(4) Ms Anderson (a teacher) Yes, our school has fairly strict rules about mobiles. Students have to turn them off before going into the classroom we take them away otherwise. They can turn them on when class is over. (5) Mr Harrison I know some people worry that kids might not learn to spell words properly that they ll use the short forms of words for text messages.
