1 Seagrass Communications Limited was commissioned to coordinate the international public relations, communications and event management for the Oceans of Hope project, overseeing the launch and successful first stage of the historic voyage to change perceptions of multiple sclerosis. From the naming ceremony and emotional send-off from Denmark, through five European countries and across the Atlantic Ocean to the first US stopover in Boston, Seagrass introduced this unique project to the world. 2 On World MS Day, 28 May 2014, the 20-metre yacht Oceans of Hope was named in an emotionally charged ceremony at the Royal Danish Yacht Club in Copenhagen, Denmark. For the man who came up with the concept of the Sailing Sclerosis Foundation, Dr Mikkel Anthonisen, the team he had gathered around him to bring the project to fruition and those with multiple sclerosis who had been sailing in Denmark throughout the previous year, it was a truly momentous occasion. Guests from the MS, sailing and business communities cheered, applauded and raised their own glasses as Lone Dybkjær, the former Danish Environment Minister, sprayed champagne on the bow of the yacht to officially name Oceans of Hope and wish her fair winds and following seas during her 17-month circumnavigation. Torben Damsgaard, Deputy Director of Scleroseforeningen, the Danish patient association, and Janne Harder, MD of Biogen Idec Denmark, also spoke at the ceremony. Flags and banners bearing the Sailing Sclerosis Foundation and Oceans of Hope logos added festive flutter to the event. Earlier in the day the crew had their first taste of the media attention that would follow them to each European port, as the Seagrasscommissioned photographer worked with them to take pictures that would be seen around the world. 150 invited guests attended the naming ceremony. Media attending the event included a news crew from TV2 Lorry and the sailing website, sailworld.com. The news release created and distributed by Seagrass generated coverage of the event in countries across the globe, including Australia, South Africa, Singapore, Italy, Spain, the USA and the UK. COPENHAGEN NAMING CEREMONY How many of us have not dreamed of sailing around the world? Now, for some of those people for whom the dream may have seemed very far away, it is suddenly possible. That s what makes Sailing Sclerosis a great project. Not only for the people with multiple sclerosis sailing on board, but also as a beacon for many other people with MS around the world who will be following the project. 3 COPENHAGEN THE DEPARTURE On 15 June 2014, Oceans of Hope s departure from Copenhagen marked the pivotal moment when the ambitious vision of Danish doctor Mikkel Anthonisen became reality. Flag waving crowds bid an emotional farewell to the crew of Oceans of Hope as they embarked on the first ever circumnavigation of the world with a crew including people with multiple sclerosis. Under bright spring sunshine against a backdrop of the Queen s Palace, they set sail from Amaliehaven on their historic 61,000-kilometre global voyage. The free event began with activities on the quayside in conjunction with national patient organisation Scleroseforeningen. TV2 Lorry presenter, Stine Sylvestersen interviewed organisers and crew members. Members of the local sailing community joined the flotilla to accompany Oceans of Hope as she paraded past the statue of the Little Mermaid before heading out into Øresund and north towards Helsingør and the iconic Kronborg castle. As she sailed into the sunset Oceans of Hope and her crew were already making headlines around the world. The voyage to change perceptions of multiple sclerosis was underway. In the lead up to the departure 11 people with MS attended taster sailing sessions on board a number of boats provided by members of the local sailing community. Around 300 people attended especially to see Oceans of Hope set sail while approximately 3,000 more were drawn to the branded event base at Amaliehaven throughout the day. VIP guests included Janne Harder, Managing Director of Biogen Idec Denmark, Christian Badenflith, Chairman of Scleroseforeningen and Stine Sylvestersen, presenter of Lounge on TV2 Lorry. 3

4 Oceans of Hope arrived in Kiel, Germany, just as the world-renowned Kieler Woche, western Europe s biggest regatta, was getting underway. The striking 20-metre yacht had a high profile berth at the heart of the event. Gerwin Stöcker, one of three leading Kiel city councillors, visited Oceans of Hope on Saturday 21 June to extend an official welcome from the German sailing city. Dutch crew member Peter van Polen joined the crew for the journey from Kiel to Amsterdam, adding an international dimension to the team. He said, It s very nice to travel with other people who have also been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis because we understand everything without asking. With all the ropes on board this ship it looks like the brain of somebody with MS; when there are problems your sail might drop on the deck or it can be impossible to get up. At the Oceans of Hope branded tent on the quayside the crew and shore team were able to speak in depth with around 40 people whose lives have been touched by the disease, inspiring some with MS to apply for a crew place. Oceans of Hope s official partner, Biogen Idec, invited guests including staff, friends and family to sail on Oceans of Hope on the Saturday. Approximately 100,000 visitors passed through the Kieler Woche site in which Oceans of Hope was centre-stage. Oceans of Hope s visit to Kiel was the subject of a full-page feature in Germany s most-read medical journal, Ärtze-Zeitung, with further features planned in NEUROvision and PTA-Forum. Despite DMSG, the national patient organisation s reluctance to be involved with a project backed by a single biotech company, the local representative did visit Oceans of Hope. KIEL I think it is lovely when people who have an illness have the chance to live their lives as if they did not. They seem to live their dreams here on Oceans of Hope. 5 AMSTERDAM It is five o clock and I actually need my sleep but my head is too full of all the stories of the people I have met today; the nautical dos and don ts that I have already learned. I can feel the adventure waiting, which makes me more aware that I need my rest but it is just all too new. The sounds of the water; the gentle, dancing movements of Oceans of Hope; the breathing of my roommate. So much for my rest and dreams. Ah, well, is this whole adventure not already a dream?! Tessa van den Berg, crew member Oceans of Hope arrived in Amsterdam on Thursday 26 June and the visit to the Dutch capital was focused on a welcome reception for the crew and a patient sailing event organised in conjunction with local patient organisations. The enthusiasm of MS Vereniging and Multiple Sclerosis Research Foundation in helping to bring together the event in a short timeframe was instrumental to its success. At the welcome reception in Amsterdam Marina the crew met Niels van Buren from Mission Summit who is aiming to become the first Dutch MS patient to climb Mount Everest. The sailing event took place on a lake near Ijmuiden on the North Sea coast. Small keel boats were chartered and 15 people took part in the event, 11 of them enjoying the sailing experience. Project founder Dr Mikkel Anthonisen delivered an inspiring presentation to the participants explaining the motivation behind the creation of the Sailing Sclerosis Foundation and the Oceans of Hope circumnavigation. On Oceans of Hope two Dutch crew passed the baton as Peter van Polen stepped ashore after sailing from Kiel and Tessa van den Berg got on board to join the crew to sail from Amsterdam to Lisbon. News of Oceans of Hope s visit to Amsterdam and the opportunity for Dutch people to sail on board was featured in the online edition of the Dutch national newspaper De Telegraaf, as well as in a radio interview and online by the regional broadcaster, RTV NH. Additional coverage appeared in the leading Dutch sailing publication, Zeilen. VIP guests who attended the welcome reception included Jaqueline Solleveld, head of MS Vereniging, and Niels van Buren from Mission Summit, as well as the MD of Biogen Idec Netherlands. Approximately 500 people had the opportunity to engage with the project at Amsterdam Marina. 5

6 The Portsmouth stopover showcased the potential of the Oceans of Hope project. Before Oceans of Hope had even arrived in the historic English port, regional media broadcast interviews with Phil Gowers, a local dentist who was to join the yacht in Portsmouth. He and Dr Mikkel Anthonisen were guests on the BBC Radio Solent breakfast show and a feature on regional news programme, BBC South Today, proved one of the most popular of the week. The pre-stopover media activity ensured a steady stream of visitors across the four days, sell-out taster sailing events and a well-attended welcome reception. High profile members of the MS Society, local politicians and representatives from the Portsmouth maritime community attended the reception while local Members of Parliament, Penny Mordaunt and Caroline Dinenage, raised questions in the House of Commons and tabled an Early Day Motion in support of the project. Caroline Dinenage featured Oceans of Hope s visit to Portsmouth in her newspaper column and continues to promote the project to her followers on Twitter. In order to accommodate as many people as possible in the sailing sessions, Oceans of Hope chartered the Thames barge Alice and record-breaking disabled sailor, Geoff Holt, provided his accessible power boat, wetwheels, to accommodate wheelchair users. In total 30 people with MS from across the south coast participated in the taster sails. Lunch was served on board Alice with all three groups of sailors coming together to listen to an inspiring speech from Dr Anthonisen. Among those taking part were people who had never previously spoken to anyone else with MS and others who had been keen sailors but thought their days on the water were behind them. A former professional sailor discovered he still has what it takes when he steered Alice back to her berth under the watchful eye of the skipper. Phone numbers were exchanged while plans were hatched to sail together again. PORTSMOUTH I m so excited. Biogen Idec staff discovered for themselves what it takes to sail Oceans of Hope when 20 people from the UK head office in Maidenhead sailed on board on Saturday. In conditions best described as lively the two groups headed out of the harbour, returning windblown and happy, with cameras full of photos. Departure day dawned and after a visit to the viewing platforms of Spinnaker Tower for the crew, the 20-metre yacht was ready to set sail again. As crowds waved from the shore and an RNLI lifeboat provided a guard of honour, Oceans of Hope slipped out into the Solent and headed for France. Media attending the stopover included regional TV news programmes BBC South Today and ITV Meridian and regional newspaper The News. Before the stopover Dr Mikkel Anthonisen and crew member Phil Gowers were interviewed on the BBC Radio Solent breakfast show. 8 By the time Oceans of Hope reached France four weeks after departing from Copenhagen, it became apparent that each stopover would take on something of the characteristics of the host nation as well as demonstrating the variety of ways in which the official partner, Biogen Idec, would activate its sponsorship. As well as hoping to inspire others with MS to follow their dreams, the Oceans of Hope project has the goal of creating networks between the MS and sailing communities. Networking was particularly successful in La Rochelle, where members of the Association Française des Sclérosés en Plaques (AFSEP) were on the quay to give Oceans of Hope a warm and noisy reception. The delegation, which included two people from AFSEP s headquarters in Toulouse, the regional representative from the Rhône department who made a 1,900-kilometre round trip to attend, and the regional representative from Charente Maritime, which covers La Rochelle, were on hand throughout the visit to speak with people with MS. AFSEP was extremely happy to be involved and spoke at length with six people with MS who had hitherto had no involvement with support organisations. One woman cried with relief at being able to talk about the disease with someone else who had it and could understand her fears, as well as reassuring her young family. Following a well-attended media conference on board Oceans of Hope, Biogen Idec s French team organised an information exchange session with medical professionals including two neurologists and nursing staff from La Rochelle hospital, which was attended by 25 people. LA ROCHELLE People affected by MS and their nearest and dearest have a need to take part in positive and hope-filled projects such as this circumnavigation. 9 I will remember this experience for my whole life. Aicha Dorgham, French MS patient On Friday afternoon Oceans of Hope slipped out through the locks for a couple of hours sailing around the bay with eight local people with MS. Everyone had a chance to take the helm and one of those on board said she would remember the experience for her whole life. Now she is on her own mission to learn English so she can apply to take part in the voyage when the yacht returns to Europe next year. (The common language on board is English and participants have to have a reasonable level of understanding in order to be able to react to safety instructions in case of an emergency.) She has also linked up with AFSEP and agreed to fill the empty role as the local volunteer representative in La Rochelle. Back in port 40 guests, including members of AFSEP and people with MS who had not been able to go sailing, were welcomed on board for aperitifs. It was very informal, good humoured with everyone chatting and exchanging stories, despite the various languages in play. As music from the huge Francofolies festival main stage drifted across the old port, the evening ended with a spontaneous outbreak of dancing on the pontoon. The term joie de vivre the joy of living may have been invented for that moment. VIP visitors included Catherine Leonidas, cabinet member with responsibility for Sports and Nautical Activities, who represented the Mayor of La Rochelle to welcome Oceans of Hope to the town. The media conference on board was attended by the two biggest regional newspapers, Sud-Ouest (daily) and L Hebdo de Charente- Maritime (weekly) along with regional broadcasters Radio France Bleu and Célà TV. Information about the stopover was also disseminated through the networks of the Ligue Française contre la Sclérose en Plaques, UNISEP and APF (Association des Paralysés de France). 9

10 The tone for the Lisbon stopover was set when actors dressed as four of the great Portuguese explorers from the Age of Discovery appeared on the dock to welcome Oceans of Hope to the most westerly capital in Europe. The theme of discovery was continued in the welcome reception when Portuguese Member of Parliament Dr Ricardo Baptista Leite, a physician who has worked with MS patients, addressed the guests and crew. He said, It was from Lisbon that our Portuguese ancestors left to discover the new world and what they did back in the 15th and 16th Centuries was to confront themselves with the boundaries of the normal world at the time. They didn t know what existed beyond that. And what people with MS are doing, being part of this crew, is actually confronting their own barriers, the barriers within themselves, showing that they can go beyond and that they can do whatever they want. Portugal s patient organisation, SPEM Sociedade Portuguesa de Esclerose Múltipla, worked closely with Seagrass and the Biogen Idec Portugal team to organise two patient sailing events. Seventeen people, including a news camera crew sailed on board Oceans of Hope and a further 13 took to the water on two smaller yachts accompanying Oceans of Hope as she sailed down the River Tagus towards the Atlantic Ocean. In total 28 people with MS were able to sail on board while a dozen more came to support the sailors and be part of the event. Lisbon resident Luísa Matias joined the crew of Oceans of Hope for the transatlantic crossing, setting sail from her home city on the tenth anniversary of her MS diagnosis. Luísa proved to be a big hit with media both prior to and during the stopover and appeared almost daily on television and radio to share her excitement about the forthcoming voyage with a national audience. LISBON My old dream was to change the face of MS in Portugal. Then Oceans of Hope came and I understood that my dream was too small. It s not about changing in Portugal that s too small. 11 From the moment the 20-metre yacht arrived in Marina Parque das Nações and throughout the stopover there was an almost palpable air of anticipation ahead of the transatlantic crossing. Tears flowed during the departure ceremony when a flash mob appeared with placards in a Hope Parade to wish fair winds to the crew of Oceans of Hope. Seagrass worked in close collaboration with the team at Biogen Idec Portugal, their communications agency, Guess What, and SPEM to create a successful event. Media representatives visiting Oceans of Hope included TV news crews from RTP, the national broadcaster, SIC Noticias and CMTV and the newspaper Jornal de Notícias. Biogen Idec arranged shuttle buses between the marina and Vasco da Gama shopping mall during the public open times for Oceans of Hope and almost 50 people visited the yacht. VIP guests included Member of Parliament Dr Ricardo Baptista Leite, and the President and Executive Vice President of SPEM, Fatima Paiva and Manuela Duarte Neves. 11

12 Boston was a key milestone for both Oceans of Hope and Biogen Idec, the official partner of the project. The arrival of the yacht was timed to coincide with MSBoston2014, the triennial joint meeting of ACTRIMS and ECTRIMS, the world s largest conference devoted to scientific research in multiple sclerosis attended by 9,000 delegates from across the globe. The tanned crew of Oceans of Hope, who had recently stepped ashore from their Atlantic crossing, received an unprecedented standing ovation from the 4,000 delegates in the auditorium at the opening ceremony of the conference. Their appearance, which was accompanied by powerful video footage from the voyage from Copenhagen to Boston, was also streamed live online. Before the team left the stage the organisers presented Dr Mikkel Anthonisen and the crew with a cheque for US$10,000 in recognition of their support for the project. During the stopover the crew members shared their inspirational stories at a patient advocacy summit, chatted with congress delegates in the Biogen Idec corporate hospitality suite, and presented to more than 100 Biogen Idec employees at the company s Cambridge global headquarters, a programme that was video-recorded and shared company-wide. Seagrass managed the stopover programme for the event, including securing berthing for the yacht and permission to display shore branding at Rowes Wharf in downtown Boston, a highly visible location where members of the public could also engage with the yacht and crew. More than 40 people signed up to take part in the patient sailing events on 8 and 14 September, which were promoted through multiple US patient organisations. Two boats from Boston Harbor Sailing Club joined Oceans of Hope on the water. One of the participants plans to set up a sailing programme similar to the original Danish Sailing Sclerosis Foundation grassroots programme, while two other people with MS are applying to get on board for a leg of the voyage as part of the Oceans of Hope crew. BOSTON I want to set up a sailing project when I get back to Portugal. We are all going to share the legacy when we get home. When I look in the mirror now I see a person, not a patient. 13 Seagrass developed the PR strategy for the stopover in conjunction with Biogen Idec s public affairs team and US agency, CGI Health, alongside the MSBoston2014 team and their agency, Feinstein Kean Healthcare. We facilitated media enquiries from around the world including a satellite media tour where, via satellite, television and radio stations across America conducted interviews with Oceans of Hope spokespeople. Media outlets from states as far apart as New Mexico, California and Washington, to Florida, North Carolina and New York interviewed Mikkel Anthonisen and Cara Lauer, one of the US crew who will join Oceans of Hope to sail down the eastern seaboard, securing extensive exposure for the project. It s been life changing. I ve grown in every way. I ve been the closest to happiness that I ve ever been. The boat is part of us now for the rest of our lives. By working closely with Biogen Idec and MSBoston2014 to engage with the global MS network, we reinforced the solid foundations in communications and event management that have been established, which can be built upon as the voyage continues around the world. The welcome reception on 8 September was attended by patient advocacy groups from Canada, USA, France, Denmark, Portugal, the global network MSIF and pan-european organisation EMSP. Media attending the stopover included the Boston Globe and Boston Metro. Seagrass facilitated interviews at MSBoston2014 with MS World, HCP Live, Reflexion Medical Network (Belgium) and Gazeta do Povo (Brazil). 14 The blog reports written by the crew of Oceans of Hope are key to the project s mission to change perceptions of multiple sclerosis and what it means to live with the disease. Their frank and honest descriptions of their time on board have raised goosebumps, brought smiles to readers faces and, on occasion, reduced us to tears. The crew members discovery that they could go further than they thought possible beyond their own perceived boundaries has inspired others to realise that they, too, are capable of more than they believed as they live day to day with the chronic disease. Everyone involved in the Oceans of Hope project acknowledges that for many people with MS, their equivalent round the world voyage is managing to simply get dressed in the morning. The hope is that, by showing what can be achieved when people are given the opportunity to overcome their own personal challenges, they can realise that it is still possible to have a dream it is just a case of finding a different way to make that dream come true. The blogs, daily reports and images sent back from the yacht were posted on the website and to the social media channels, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, to reach as broad an audience as possible. Without the budget for an advertising campaign, Seagrass ensured from the outset that the addresses of all of these platforms were integrated into every piece of branding collateral including banners, postcards, feather flags and the multi-lingual event guide. The audience reach figures for the first stage of the campaign are extremely encouraging and provide a solid base from which to grow the online community as Oceans of Hope continues to make her way around the world. SHARING THE ADVENTURE I woke at 3am when my alarm rang. The boat was in motion and soared high and dove deep, but there are no windows in the cabins so I couldn t know what to expect, but my body and my soul were full of expectation. The sea was animated, foaming at the top and the wind sang at knots. And Oceans of Hope danced through it! My journey is done but it s only the first leg for Oceans of Hope, and when she dances again I hope you are on board to dance with her and feel what I felt. She is alive! The boat is moving smoothly through the dark swell which pushes us from behind, requiring an alert helmsman to keep us on course. There is an inertia which reminds me of the long continuous pull, perseverance, insistence and demand required of us all to live life especially when facing yet another night of sailing on only a little sleep. I made some fried eggs for breakfast and while we were eating Bertram, Mikkel Bruun, Luísa and I a big group of dolphins joined us, a flying fish jumps in front of the boat and the wind, at last, turned up. Now, I was standing behind the wheel, alone on the deck. The world is mine! Mikkel Anthonisen came to join me, and we had a long conversation about the project, Oceans of Hope. About the stories, the difficulties, the planning and the time pressures, but of course also all the good times and that the project at the end was getting real. I am a part of this now. Mikkel went back down to the cabin. I start crying... Today I found myself. Mitten unter ihnen die Oceans of Hope. In Kopenhagen hat Skipper Mikkel Anthonisen die Leinen gelöst, Kiel ist sein erster Hafen auf einer Route, die ihn im Laufe der nächsten Monate Seemeilen durch die ganze Welt und insgesamt dreimal über den Atlantik führen wird. Das haben andere vor ihm zwar auch schon geschafft. Das Besondere an der Oceans of Hope : Die vierköpfige Crew wird mit MS-Patienten verstärkt, die in jedem Hafen an Bord kommen können und das Schiff auch in jedem Hafen wieder verlassen können. Tour über Amsterdam und Lissabon Anthonisen selbst ist nicht nur Segler, sondern Arzt und Psychotherapeut und MS-Spezialist an der Kopenhagener Universitätsklinik. Seit Jahren arbeitet der 47-Jährige täglich mit MS- Patienten und segelt nun mit ihnen um die Welt. In Kopenhagen waren acht dänische Patienten mit Anthonisen gestartet, von denen fünf von Kiel aus wieder nach Hause gereist sind. Im einzigen deutschen Hafen auf der Route stießen vier neue Patienten dazu. Der Wechsel wird in Häfen wie Amsterdam, La Rochelle, Portsmouth oder Lissabon weitergehen. Die Patienten lernen das Projekt über die von Anthonisen gegründete Sailing Sclerosis Foundation kennen. Das internationale Projekt will dazu beitragen, dass MS-Patienten, die Interesse am Segeln haben, Netzwerke in der ganzen Welt aufbauen. Das Leben auf der Jacht bietet dazu beste Gelegenheit. Anthonisen hofft, dass die Patienten dabei die geistige Freiheit entdecken oder wiederentdecken, die das Segeln bringt. Und er setzt darauf, dass die Aufenthalte in den Anlaufhäfen dazu beitragen, dass MS-Patienten dieser Region bei den örtlichen Segelorganisationen mitmachen. An Bord haben die Patienten zwar die Erkrankung gemeinsam, es sind aber bunt zusammengestellte Teams. Ein pensionierter Pastor ist genauso dabei wie ein Zahnchirurg. Eine fünffache Mutter, ein Bäcker und eine Grafikerin. Wenn wir die Segel setzen, bleibt die Multiple Sklerose an Land, sagt einer. Dabei achtet der Arzt darauf, dass jeder nach seinen Fähigkeiten und nach seinen persönlichen Bedürfnissen eingesetzt wird. Segelerfahrung ist auf der 20 Meter langen Jacht zwar von Vorteil, aber angesichts der erfahrenen Proficrew nicht unbedingt erforderlich. Deutsche Patienten wurden für die von Biogen Idec unterstützte Segeltour bislang noch nicht rekrutiert, sind aber willkommen und können sich über die Website des Projektes bewerben. Wer Berührungsängste hat oder sich das Leben an Bord womöglich nicht zutraut, sollte sich die Geschichte von Paul anhören: Der frühere Schmied kam im vergangenen Jahr als Patient zu Anthonisen. Seine Arbeit musste er krankheitsbedingt aufgeben, er verfiel zunehmend in Depressionen. Nebenbei erfuhr der Arzt, dass sein Patient früher gern gesegelt sei. Paul traute sich das nicht mehr zu, Anthonisen überredete ihn, sich einfach mal wieder im Hafen umzusehen. Dann war es nur noch ein kleiner Schritt aufs Boot, so Anthonisen. Die Komfortzone verlassen Die acht Patienten an Bord haben ihre Komfortzone, wie Anthonisen sagt, verlassen und den Wunsch, Außergewöhnliches zu leisten. Sie wollen vorgefasste Meinungen über MS-Kranke infrage stellen und andere Erkrankte ermutigen, dasselbe zu tun. Plätze sind noch frei auch für die Atlantiküberquerungen nehmen die Organisatoren gerne noch Bewerbungen entgegen. Der Reiz ist hoch: Zwei Mal bietet sich die Gelegenheit, den Äquator zu überqueren, zu den Anlaufhäfen zählen Städte wie Boston und Melbourne. Die Route führt an der amerikanischen Küste entlang, durch die Karibik, den Panama-Kanal, an den Galapagos-Inseln vorbei. Das Kap der Guten Hoffnung und Brasilien werden angesegelt. Zurück in Europa steuert die Oceans of Hope Häfen in Spanien und Italien an. Die Rückkehr ist für den November 2015 in Kopenhagen geplant. Ob der Termin eingehalten werden kann, was die Besatzung unterwegs erlebt und wer dann an Bord sein wird, das steht heute noch nicht fest und kann von den MS-Patienten auch aus Deutschland mit beeinflusst werden. Der Auftakt zeigt aber, dass das Projekt in den Anlaufhäfen auf Interesse stößt und damit dazu beiträgt, das Ziel des Sponsors zu erreichen. Jeg har nu valgt at se anderledes på det, nemlig at efter de ansvar, der bliver taget fra os, følger nogle nye, bare på et helt andet niveau. Man må gøre op med sig selv, hvad det gode liv er - et emne, jeg har arbejdet med længe, og som der en dag kommer en bog ud af. En undtagelse må det gode skib»oceans of Hope«- på dansk»oceaner af Håb«- dog udgøre. Det gode skib, der letter anker fra Amaliehaven i København søndag den 15. juni kl , blandt andre med tidligere sognepræst Søren Willesen, Grevinge, om bord, er nemlig ikke helt almindelig, da der er det særlige ved skibet, at såvel Søren Willesen som hovedparten af den øvrige besætning har dét til fælles, at de alle lider af sygdommen sklerose. Da sklerose er en sygdom, der dels kan slå sig på synet og balancen, dels give lammelser, og i det hele taget ødelægger nogle af de centrale nervetråde, der skal sende informationer fra hjernen og ud i kroppen, kan forehavendet synes noget letsindigt - men ikke desto mindre er idéen udkastet af en læge, nemlig Mikkel Anthonsen fra Rigshospitalet. - Hér sidder jeg over for skle rosepatienter hver dag og oplever, hvordan denne sygdom kan tage livsgnisten fra folk. Imidlertid koster et sådant projekt naturligvis penge at gennemføre, og først her tidligere i 2014 lykkedes det at rejse de 10 millioner sponsorkroner, der skulle til for at erhverve en båd og få den gjort rejseklar.
