This rule does not apply to nouns whose plural ends in s: die Rolling Stones: Dative = den Rolling Stones (= to/for the Rolling Stones) or die Jungs: Dative = den Jungs (= to/for the chaps) The use of the dative case: For the indirect object: The dative case is used for the indirect object. The indirect object is always a person (mein Freund, meine Freunde) or an institution made up of people (die Universität). The indirect object always expresses for whom something is done or to whom something is done (written, given as a gift, etc.) When you ask for whom or to whom in German, you use the question word wem

2 wem = to whom, for whom When somebody asks a question with this question word, you put the information you give in your answer always into dative. Beispiele: Wem schenken Sie ein Buch?
