3 EDITORIAL Liebe Leserie ud Leser der gazette, vo de erste deutsche Eiwaderer im Jahr 1683 über de Aufbau der juge amerikaische Republik durch Persölichkeite wie Carl Schurz ud Friedrich vo Steube bis hi zur Luftbrücke ud dem Marshall-Pla verbidet beide Seite des Atlatiks eie ege historische Beziehug. Sie zieht sich vo de dukle Kapitel der beide Weltkriege im 20. Jahrhudert bis hi zur Deutsche Wiedervereiigug als leuchtedes Beispiel für die Bedeutug der trasatlatische Kooperatio. Währed usere kollektive Erieruge das Grudgerüst für usere Eisatz für die deutsch-amerikaische Beziehuge bildet, dürfe wir jedoch icht stehebleibe, de die deutsch-amerikaische Beziehuge sid mehr als die Summe userer kollektive Erieruge. Die eue Ausgabe der gazette beschäftigt sich mit dieser Verbidug aus Vergageheit ud Gegewart. Als Verbad zeige wir, dass es sich loht diese Parterschaft icht ur zu bewahre, soder zu förder ud auszubaue. Covetio im Siegerlad Bettia Keee-Rauterberg, Brigitte Leverez I diesem Jahr trafe sich die Delegierte der Clubs ud der Vorstad auf Eiladug des DAG Siege vom Mai im Siegerlad. Es wurde eie sehr gelugee Verastaltug, die der Clubpräsidet, Jürge Müller, Volker Schüttehelm zusamme mit Brigitte Driehaus, der Evet-Chairperso des Verbades, orgaisierte. Diese drei Tage ware für Delegierte ud Gäste eie wuderbare Gelegeheit, das schöe Siegerlad ud die historisch iteressate Stadt (Geburtsort vo P.P. Rubes) mit ihre liebeswürdige Gastgeber keezulere. Der Freitagabed ist wie immer eher iformell ud vergügt. Wir treffe us a eiem wuderschöe Sommerabed im urige, älteste Gasthaus Sieges, im PEUN. Dort werde wie immer Kotakte geschlosse, Erfahruge ausgetauscht ud auch scho über de ächste Tag mit der Mitgliederversammlug ud de Wahle des eue Vorstades diskutiert. Die Berichte der Vorstadsmitglieder lage de Clubs scho i schriftlicher Form vor, so dass zu der Arbeit der letzte beide Jahre ur kurz och Iformatioe ud Frage behadelt werde: Der scheidede Präsidet, Gary Bautell, desse mögliche Amtszeit abgelaufe ist, sagt, dass die Jahre als Präsidet sei Lebe durch die viele Begeguge etscheided bereichert habe. Als besodere Aerkeug für die geleistete Arbeit überreicht er de bisherige Vorstadsmitglieder alte Stiche mit amerikaische Motive ud Bücher. Die Schatzmeisteri Sigrid Behke-Dewath bittet alle Clubs um geaue Zahle ihrer Mitglieder, um weitere Spede für de Verbad für die gaz wesetliche Aufgabe wie Studet Exchage ud Jugedreise ud legt de Wirtschaftsbericht vor, der de Fiazbericht des vergagee Jahres bestätigt. Der Samstagachmittag begit mit der Etlastug des alte Vorstades, bei der vor allem der scheidede Präsidet mit stehede Ovatioe bedacht wird. Today, the descedets of these emigrats are orgaized i the Germaa Foudatio. Oe of the mai emphases of our club is to keep up ad cherish good relatios with these descedets. Wir müsse us wieder stärker auf user eigetliches Keraliege, de Eisatz für die deutsch-amerikaische Freudschaft, besie. Der soziale Zusammehalt i de eizele Clubs wird durch eie Vielzahl a Aktivitäte, z.b. Wadergruppe ud Exkursioe, positiv gestärkt. Daebe sollte wir us wieder stärker ihaltlich ud thematisch mit dem Zustad ud aktuelle Treds der trasatlatische Beziehuge beschäftige. Es ist der ihaltliche Dialog ud die persöliche Begegug zwische Deutsche ud Amerikaer, der Völkerverstädigug fördert ud vorabrigt. 2.) Wir müsse us stärker der Gesellschaft öffe. Die deutsch-amerikaische Freudschaft darf icht zum Aliege eiiger weiger werde, soder soll durch eie breite Gesellschaft getrage werde. Für diese Freudschaft köe wir am beste werbe, we wir usere Verastaltugstüre öffe, auch Kritik a aktuelle Theme zulasse ud us a heiße Eise wage. 3.) Wir müsse stärker de umittelbare Kotakt mit Amerikaer suche. Aufgrud des Abzugs der amerikaische Soldate ist es icht eifacher geworde, de kokrete Dialog i de Mitgliederclubs aufrecht zu erhalte. Deoch ist geau dieser Pukt etscheided: eie tatsächliche Dialog mit Amerikaer über Amerika zu führe, astelle uter sich zu bleibe ud ausschließlich über Amerikaer ud über Amerika zu rede. I viele Clubs wird hierzu bereits ei wichtiger Beitrag geleistet. Ich möchte Sie ermuter, diese Richtug auch weiterhi zu verfolge. Der Verbad ka auf eie lage Traditio ud Geschichte zurückblicke. Seit mehr als 65 Jahre leiste die zahlreiche Clubs mit Egagemet, Ela ud Überzeugug eie uersetzliche Beitrag für die Verstädigug zwische beide Seite des Atlatiks. I 1981 he became a TV reporter, atioal commetator ad preseter of a weekly TV program o world affairs with ARD, Germay s largest public TV ad radio statio. I 1988, he joied RIAS-TV i Berli, a joit US-Germa radio ad TV statio, becomig editor i chief. He was bureau chief i Brussels for six years, resposible for Deutsche Welle s radio ad TV coverage of the creatio of the euro ad the elargemet of NATO ad the EU. I Jauary 1999 he became Bureau Chief ad Seior Diplomatic Correspodet for Deutsche Welle Radio ad Televisio i Washigto. As the represetative of Germay s oly iteratioal broadcaster i the Uited States, Letz maaged its jouralistic, public diplomacy, marketig ad regulatory affairs. As we look ahead, the youth ad studet exchages remai the core of our work. To preserve ad further develop these programs is the highest priority of all our efforts. The Germa-America friedship must ot become the cocer of oly a few; rather we should groud our work o the broad support of society. It is best for us to promote this friedship by opeig our evets to iterested, exteral people, addressig curret problems ad challegig topics. 3) We must re-establish direct cotact with Americas. Due to the withdrawal of a large portio of America soldiers, it has ot become easier to keep up the persoal Germa-America dialogue i the member clubs. Nevertheless, this poit is crucial: to coduct a curret dialogue with Americas about America istead of remaiig amog ourselves ad merely talk about Americas ad about America. To that ed, may clubs already provide a importat cotributio I would like to ecourage you all to progress i this directio. The Federatio ca look back o a log traditio ad history. Es wurde dafür auch höchste Zeit, de ei trügerisches Gefühl der Sicherheit i Westeuropa ud eie Ermüdug der Amerikaer die Rolle des Weltpoliziste zu gebe hatte doch zu eiem schleichede ud gefährliche Auseiaderdrifte geführt. Die Obama Regierug tedierte aus wirtschaftliche Grüde dazu ihre Aufmerksamkeit auf Asie ud (otgedruge) auf de Mittlere Oste zu verlager, währed die Europäer sich vo eier vorgebliche Stabilität auf ihrem Kotiet dazu verleite ließe, ihre Militärausgabe drastisch zu kürze ud sich darauf zu verlasse, daß ei wirtschaftlich geschwächtes ud kriegsmüdes Amerika weiterhi alle Sicherheitsprobleme i der Welt regel würde... koste es was es wolle. Today, Eglish is predomiat iteratioally ad i practically all fields. The problem is that Eglish is ot a true, eutral ligua fraca, but a veracular laguage. This meas, by defiitio, that laguage competecies are asymmetrical: A ative speaker has dramatic advatages. This is icreasigly see as ujust by o-eglish speakers. Dr. Plewia recommeds that speakers of Germa accept this situatio. Germa is still importat as a secod or third foreig laguage, both with regioal sigificace ad withi the arts ad humaities. This is the story of how I became the World s Worst Guest Ever. O my secod day i Germay, I was stayig with Aa Kramer ad Karl Schrass at their home i Düsseldorf util I could move ito my studet dormitory. I was havig a lovely time with my ususpectig hosts (who had already had the misfortue of havig to pick me up from the airport at eight i the morig ad help me carry my two oboxiously large suitcases up to the fifth floor of their buildig) but I had oticed some back pais after the log trip. At first, I igored the discomfort. As the day wore o, however, the pai became icreasigly sharper. Whe I wet to bed it felt as if I had bee stabbed by a kife, ad the tossig ad turig was just pushig it i deeper. I fially drifted off ito a ueasy sleep. Whe I woke up the ext morig, I had a terrifyig revelatio: I could ot stad up. The pai was excruciatig ad I could t wiggle or roll oto my side i order to get off the bed. I lay there paickig, seriously cocered that I would perish, util I heard Karl movig about i the kitche, gettig ready for work. I called out to him as loud as I could. He burst i ad gallatly hoisted me off of the mattress ad oto a chair. Aa also came rushig to my aid; they called a taxi ad helped take me dowstairs ad straight to a orthopedist. The problem: somehow, I had maaged to get a heriated disc so large that most doctors were surprised I was eve able to move my legs. The rest of the day became a blur of doctors offices, MRI machies, pai medicatio, ad Foto Bettia Keee-Rauterberg sheer terror at flights of stairs. The day after, the situatio had grow so dire that they had to call a ambulace. I just 3 days, I had robbed my poor VDAC Betreuer of ay hope of a decet ight s sleep, days at work ad the ability to go aywhere umolested by Quasimodo (yours truly). I was relieved whe I was admitted to the hospital, ot oly because they immediately gave me drugs, but because fially Karl ad Aa would get a miute s peace from the World s Worst Guest Ever. What I had hoped would be a 1-2 ight stay i the hospital became a two week log ightmare of eedles, poor pai maagemet, brutal physical therapy, ad a orgy of carbohydrates (seriously, hospital food is almost all carb based). But istead of passig off the burde of the World s Worst Guest Ever to the hospital(s) like sae people, my oble hosts cotiued to visit me almost daily, brigig good cheer ad fresh uderwear, eve whe all I could do was literally scream i agoy at the violet crampig i my back ad my left leg. They also performed the brut of the maual labor of movig my stuff ito my apartmet, icludig assemblig a fold out sofa ad trasportig my two obsceely over-packed suitcases from their apartmet to the other side of tow. After I was fially released from the hospital, they cotiued to visit me regularly; they would cook me meals ad clea up my apartmet, or eve just make sure I was t loely. My poor hosts were ow hostig me at my ow house! Ad to top it all off, they took care of the majority of the harrowig Germa bureaucracy ecessary to esure I would ot be booted out of the coutry. I was truly begiig to thik I had overstayed my welcome. Slowly but surely, my parasitelike existece bega to wae. Two moths of physical therapy later, I had a daily routie with some semblaces of ormalcy, ad the World s Worst Guest Ever was able to resume classes as well as basic housekeepig. A few moths after that, Karl ad Aa aouced that they were movig to Bo. I was distraught but usurprised that I had drive them from their previous residece, ad that they were off to greeer pastures, free from moochig exchage studets. Although they do t live too far away from me ow, I ca t help but miss my beevolet hosts. Their smiles, compay, ecouragemet ad itese upper body stregth were some of the biggest comforts i my great hour of eed. Their kidess helped keep me from beig swallowed whole by the daily frustratios of livig with a disability or a chroic ijury. Their resourcefuless helped get me the prompt care that I eeded. I hoestly do t thik I would be stadig here today without them. Although there were may people from both VDAC ad DAFN members ad alumi who helped cotribute to my recovery, ad to whom I am immesely grateful, I ca hoestly say that Karl ad Aa wet above ad beyod the call of duty.
