2 EDITORIAL Liebe Leserinnen, liebe Leser, die überzeugende Produktqualität, eine sehr fleißige Mannschaft und ein realistisches Mana gement bilden die Basis des Erfolges der EOS Gruppe. Im Geschäftsjahr 2012/13 hat der EOS Konzern so seinen Umsatz weltweit auf 515,2 Millionen Euro gesteigert. Das ist ein Plus von 57,2 Millionen Euro im Vergleich zum Vorjahr. Als internationaler Anbieter konnten wir schwache Entwicklungen in einzelnen Märkten durch überproportional gute in anderen Regionen aus gleichen. Von der Stabilität, die unser globales Netzwerk schafft, profitieren nicht zuletzt unsere Kunden. As an international service provider, we were able to compensate for sluggish developments in some individual markets by generating disproportionately positive results in other regions. One of the main reasons for the increased number of bad debts, according to Santamaria, is the high rate of unemployment, which currently stands at around 27 per cent (see diagram). The crisis represents a huge challenge for our company. The market is contracting and competition for new and current customers is growing, reflects Mr Santamaria. Besides the situation with bad debts, the exodus of customers to lower-priced offers is a significant issue. Competitors are increasingly trying to gain additional market share through venues and secure the customer base. As such, Vodafone revised its risk assessment procedures and optimised all aspects of the customer life cycle, including debt collection measures. Naturally, we want to collect all payments. But at the same time, we also wish to have satisfied customers who will stay with us. EOS succeeds in achieving the perfect balance of efficiency and tact in its work. It can meanwhile be seen that the telecommunications company has succeeded in getting overdue receivables and defaults under control as well as reducing losses. In future, debt collection companies are supposed to specify to debtors the identity of the person(s) or organisation on whose behalf they are working, on what legal grounds the debt has arisen, and how the debt collection costs are calculated. The law, which is to be considered by Germany s upper house, the Bundesrat, in September, is designed to improve transparency for consumers and strengthen the reputable majority of debt collection companies. Um zu entscheiden, ob sich ein Außendienstbesuch bei einem Schuldner lohnt, setzt EOS in Deutschland auf eine analytische Steuerung. Wie funktioniert das? Wir analysieren Schuldnerdaten mithilfe sta tistischer Modelle. Anhand zahlreicher Ein fluss faktoren errechnen wir einen Scorewert also eine Prognose für einen Schuldner zum aktu ellen Zeitpunkt. Liegt die Erfolgswahrscheinlichkeit einer Maßnahme über einem festgelegten Schwellenwert, informiert das System den zuständigen Außendienstmitarbeiter. Nach einem Praxistest läuft das System mittlerweile erfolgreich bei EOS Deutscher Inkasso-Dienst, EOS SID Süddeutscher Inkasso-Dienst und EOS mercator inkasso. Woher stammt die Datenbasis? Das System greift auf Millionen von Schuldnerdaten aus unserem Bestand zu. Für die statistische Auswertung werden die Daten allerdings so anonymisiert, dass eine Identifikation der Schuldner nicht möglich ist. Wie profitieren EOS Kunden davon? Die Summe der Zahlungseingänge bei Field-Service-Einsätzen ist signifikant gestiegen. EOS wird die Steuerung der Inkassomaßnahmen über Scores ausbauen, um die Ergebnisse für die Kunden auch weiterhin zu verbessern. Bei ihren Außendienstbesuchen sorgen sie in persönlichen Gesprächen dafür, dass säumige Zahler offene Forderungen begleichen. Dazu vereinbaren die EOS Mitarbeiter Ratenzahlungen im Rahmen der Vorgaben des Gläubigers. Ein respektvoller Umgang mit den Schuldnern ist für die erfahrenen Experten selbstverständlich. DEBT COLLECTION IN THE FIELD Around 200 employees are out and about in fi eld service for EOS in Germany. When they make their fi eld visits, they speak to defaulting payers face-to-face to make sure they settle their outstanding debts. This involves EOS staff arranging payment by instalments in line with the creditor s specifi cations. It goes without saying that these experienced experts treat debtors with respect. EOS in Germany puts its faith in analytical control to help it decide whether a field visit to a debtor will be worthwhile. How does it work? We analyse debtor data with the help of statistical models. By including numerous infl uencing factors we calculate a score in other words a forecast for a debtor at the present time. If the probability of a visit being successful is above a fi xed threshold value, the system informs the responsible fi eld employee. If it is below the threshold value, EOS uses other methods to bring about the payment. How does the system calculate the probability of success? The employees involved in debt collection and we analysts have worked out hypotheses for ascertaining which factors might have good explanatory power that the debtor has already paid in the past, for example. We found out which aspects are statistically signifi cant during the conception of our model. After a practical test, the system is now running successfully at EOS Deutscher Inkasso-Dienst, EOS SID Süddeutscher Inkasso-Dienst and EOS mercator inkasso. Where does the database originate? The system has access to millions of debtor data from our data stocks. But for the statistical analysis, the data are anonymised so effi ciently that the debtors cannot be identifi ed. How do EOS clients benefit from it? The aggregate incoming payments resulting from fi eld service activities have increased signifi cantly. EOS is going to expand the management of debt collection activities with scores so that results for the clients can be improved further. EOS Journal 5

Daher spielen die Aufbereitung und die Verteilung von Trink- sowie die anschließende Reinigung von gebrauchtem Wasser eine immer wichtigere Rolle. Diese Aufgabe übernehmen vielerorts Unternehmen wie United Utilities Water (UUW). Die Firma ist im Nordwesten Englands beheimatet. Dort bietet sie sämtliche Diens te rund um die Versorgung mit Trinkwasser und die Wiederaufbereitung von Abwasser für mehr als drei Millionen private Haushalte sowie für Unternehmen an. Since January 2013, EOS UK has assisted the water supplier with receivables management and helped it to increase its customers willingness to pay. Seen from outer space, the Earth looks like a blue planet. Water covers twothirds of the planet s surface, giving it the appearance of a radiant blue sphere. But our water supplies are limited. As the world s population grows, so too does the need for clean drinking water. Today, daily consumption in most industrial countries is already more than 100 litres per person. However this fi gure does not include the several cubic metres of virtual water which is required for the manufacturing of industrial and agricultural products. The preparation and distribution of drinking water and the subsequent purifi cation of used water are therefore becoming more and more important. In many places, this task is carried out by companies such as United Utilities Water (UUW). The company is based in the northwest of England, where it offers the whole range of services connected with supplying drinking water and recycling waste water for more than three million private households and business enterprises. Default in payment is increasing UUW has been a privately-run company since 1989 and now has around 5,300 employees. The UK is one of the countries where, for data protection reasons, there is no compulsory registration. As a result, companies there often put their faith in professional services for tracing people, known as skip tracing. The aim of the skip tracing process is to ascertain a person s current address so that important documents such as invoices or reminders can be delivered there. Many companies outsource skip tracing as an individual activity or as part of an external debt collection service. EOS Solutions UK offers its customers skip tracing as a supplementary service, and with a great deal of success one of the reasons why Mr Pilling explicitly praises the collaboration with EOS UK. He also believes that it will be possible to expand their still young business relationship. BMW tut es, Citroën auch und Daimler sowieso: Angelockt von steigenden Nutzerzahlen drängen Automobilhersteller ins Carsharing-Geschäft. Damit reagieren sie auf einen Trend, der nach Ansicht vieler Fachleute das Zeug dazu hat, unser Wirtschaftssystem kräftig durcheinanderzuwirbeln die Sharing- Economy, also die gemeinsame Nutzung von Gebrauchsgütern. 11 Share and be part of it BUSINESS Increasing numbers of young people place little emphasis on own ership. Whether it s a car, an apartment or food, things are being shared rather than bought. The necessary interconnection structure is provided by the Web 2.0. What does the boom in the sharing econ omy mean for the economy as a whole? BMW does it, Citroën does it too and Daimler well, of course they do! Enticed by increasing user statistics, auto manufacturers are piling into the carsharing business. In doing so, they are responding to a trend which, in the opinion of many experts, has what it takes to really shake up our economic system the sharing economy, in other words the joint use of consumer goods and durables. The immense speed at which car sharing has spread in recent years shows that the sharing economy is more than just a niche phenomenon, says Harald Heinrichs, Professor of Sustainability and Politics at Leuphana University Lüneburg, Germany, and author of the survey Sharing Economy: Towards a New Culture of Consumption?. Although not many statistics are available yet, the ones that we have speak for themselves. In the USA alone, which has the biggest car-sharing market, there are already 700,000 registered users, followed by Germany with 435,000, according to the German industry association Bundesverband CarSharing. When the car rental company Avis acquired Zipcar, the biggest US-based car-sharing company, for 550 million dollars at the beginning of 2013, its shareholders saw the value of their shares increase by 49 per cent. Young people are more willing to share The passion for sharing is signifi cantly infl u- encing new business models and having an impact on services, mobility offerings and consumer products, says Mirjam Hauser from Switzerland s Gottlieb Duttweiler Institute (GDI; see interview on page 13). In her survey Sharity: Die Zukunft des Teilens ( the culture of sharing ), Ms Hauser observes that young people share more often than older people. One possible reason for this is that the digital natives generation is more present in social networks, where sharing is seen as smart and cool. Inspired by the Internet, social media, apps and/or chip card systems, the trend reached other economic sectors long ago. Bicycles, tools, food the list of goods that private individuals or companies offer for sharing is long. Countless peer-to-peer networks, in which private individuals share things with each other, are sprouting up in the Internet. One of the best-known is the Airbnb platform, which connects privately let accommodation ranging from rooms in shared apartments to houseboats with private individuals. The platform s operators provide the insurance and receive a proportion of the rent a lucrative business. The fact that sharing in practice can lead to legal problems in some circumstances was recently demonstrated by the case of the New Yorker Nigel Warren. He had to pay a fi ne of 2,400 dollars because he had rented out his room to a Russian tourist via Airbnb for three days while he himself spent that period in Colorado. By doing this, he violated a law in his home city which stipulates that New Yorkers may not rent out their apartments for fewer than 30 days when they themselves are absent. Sharing city sets an example Other cities, however, are trying actively to boost the sharing economy. One shining example of this is Seoul, the South Korean capital. As part of its Sharing City, Seoul project, the East Asian metropolis is promoting sharing and swapping with the help of 20 special programmes. The citizens share private car parking spaces that otherwise remain unused during the day, used business clothes designed to help young job-seekers start a career, or books that residents of large apartments keep in a common library. The city council provides those keen to share with suitable platforms on the Internet and in the public sphere. Sharing-Stadt mit Vorbildcharakter Andere Städte hingegen versuchen, die Sharing-Economy aktiv anzukurbeln. Ein leuchtendes Beispiel ist die südkoreanische Hauptstadt Seoul. Im Zuge des Projektes The Sharing City, Seoul fördert die ostasiatische Metropole das Teilen und Tauschen mithilfe von 20 speziellen Programmen. Die Bürger teilen unter anderem Privatparkplätze, die sonst tagsüber ungenutzt blieben, gebrauchte Businesskleidung, die jungen Jobsuchenden beim Karrierestart helfen soll, und Bücher, die Bewohner großer Apartmenthäuser in einer gemeinsamen Bibliothek verwahren. Den Teilwilligen stellt die Stadt im Internet und im öffentlichen Raum entsprechende Plattformen zur Verfügung. Der strategische Ansatz, mit dem die Stadt Seoul das Thema Sharing auf die Stadtpolitik überträgt, ist sehr beeindruckend, sagt Nachhaltigkeitsprofessor Heinrichs. Zahnpasta teilen? Nein danke! Der Trend zum Teilen dürfte manche Bereiche der alten Wirtschaft vor Herausforderungen stellen etwa die Hotel- und die Automobilbranche, die Kunden an die Sharing-Modelle verlieren könnten. Eine Revolution, die das bestehende System in den nächsten Jahren überrollt, ist jedoch nicht zu erwarten. Ich gehe davon aus, dass dieser Trend noch in den kommenden fünf bis 15 Jahren relevant sein wird und zwar branchenübergreifend, sagt Mirjam Hauser vom GDI. Für Unternehmen kann es sich also durchaus lohnen, herkömmliche Geschäftsmodelle um ein erfolgreiches Sharing-Angebot zu ergänzen. 12

Carsharing: Der Trend verbreitet sich rasant Car sharing: The trend is gaining ground rapidly for the city is very impressive, says Professor Heinrichs. Sharing toothpaste? No thanks! The trend towards sharing is likely to pose challenges for some parts of the old economy such as the hotel and automobile sectors, which might lose customers as a result of the sharing models. But a revolution big enough to overrun the existing system in the next few years is not likely to happen. The sharing economy won t replace the existing economic system overnight; instead, it will complement it, says Professor Heinrichs. Some things aren t suitable for sharing toothpaste, for example, which we need for ourselves. Although only little empirical evidence is available, experts agree that the sharing economy is more than just a passing fad. I am assuming that this trend will still be relevant in fi ve to fi fteen years time and across sector boundaries, says Mirjam Hauser of GDI. So it can be worthwhile for companies to enhance their conventional business models with a successful framework for sharing. INFOS Teilen liegt im Trend. Wie ist dieses Phänomen zu erklären? Drittens und das ist ein ganz wichtiger Punkt mit einer Veränderung der gesellschaftlichen Werte: Während diese in der Vergangenheit sehr materialistisch geprägt waren, möchte man heute gar nicht mehr so viel besitzen. Denn Besitz verpflichtet und das ist mühsam. Inwiefern wirkt sich die Sharing-Economy auf unser Wirtschaftssystem aus? Wir Menschen haben schon immer geteilt. Betrachtet man unsere Geschichte, leben wir in einem Tauschsystem. Das ist unser Naturzustand, aus dem mit der Einführung des Geldes eine Konsumgesellschaft entstanden ist. Mit dem Trend Sharing-Economy beobachten wir nun so etwas wie eine Rückkehr zur Tauschwirtschaft. Was bedeutet das für Unternehmen? Firmen eröffnet sich die Chance, neue Geschäftsfelder zu erschließen. Voraussetzung ist, dass sie ihre Produkte entsprechend anpassen. Es ist wichtig, dass sich die Nutzer möglichst schnell mit der Handhabung vertraut machen können. Außerdem gewinnt die Lebensdauer der Produkte an Bedeutung so sollten die Waren nicht mit Sollbruchstellen versehen, sondern robust und lange nutzbar sein. Der Vorteil für Unternehmen: Indem sie in den Markt der Sharing-Economy einsteigen, können sie ganz neue Zielgruppen ansprechen und neue Kundensegmente bedienen. Secondly by new networking technologies, such as the Internet, which simplify the sharing of goods. Thirdly and this is a crucial point by a change in society s values: while these were highly materialistic in the past, people these days don t want to own so much. Ownership brings responsibility which can be demanding. How is the sharing economy having an impact on our economic system? We humans have always shared. If we take a look at our history, we live in an exchange economy. That s our natural condition, which, since the introduction of money, has set the frame for the development of a consumer society. In the trend towards the sharing economy, we are now witnessing something akin to a return to bartering. What does that mean for companies? For companies it opens up the opportunity to develop new fi elds of business. The prerequisite is that they adapt their products accordingly. It is important that users can learn how to handle these systems as quickly as possible. In addition to that, the products lifespan is becoming more important rather than being designed to include predetermined breaking points, the goods should be robust and have a long useful life. The advantage for companies is that by entering the sharing economy market, they can approach completely new target groups and/or serve new customer segments. EOS Journal 13

Beispiel Donwan Harrell: Hollywood-Stars wie Brad Pitt oder Halle Berry gehören zu den Kunden seines Premiumlabels PRPS. Der Designer verwendet ausschließlich afrikanische Baumwolle, die in japanischen Familienbetrieben auf historischen Webstühlen verarbeitet wird. Die handgefertigten Hosen werden im Anschluss aufwendig mit Rissen und Macken versehen. Ähnlich kunstvoll bearbeitet auch Toshikiyo Hirata in seiner Jeans-Manufaktur Kapital die blauen Maßanfertigungen. Seit 1984 produzieren er und seine Mitarbeiter in der japanischen Provinzstadt Kojima edle Einzelstücke für Kunden aus aller Welt. Auf Wunsch zieren die Hosen Nieten aus Gold, das Hirata höchstpersönlich formt. Solch eine Anfertigung braucht Zeit und hat ihren Preis. Auf eine Kapital-Jeans warten manche Kunden sechs Monate. Und sie zahlen je nach Exklusivität ihrer Wünsche bis zu Euro. 14

Witness to long-ago events, rebel and the preferred item of attire in Hollywood hardly any other garment goes back so many generations or has built such a career. This year the mother of all jeans celebrates its 140th anniversary and denims are still as much loved today as they were then. They were originally designed as protective trousers for the gold diggers of San Francisco by the textiles trader Levi Strauss who left Franconia in Germany to emigrate to America. Together with the tailor, Jacob Davis, whose idea it was to use rivets to reinforce the pockets, he patented his Levi s 501 jeans on 20 May Legwear for rebels Adventure, rebellion, freedom this is what the original Levi s 501 embodied for many people from generation to generation. It s now 28 years later and jeans no longer shock. The older and more worn they are, the more sought-after they become among collectors of vintage clothing. Probably the most expensive pair of jeans in the world changed hands at an Internet auction: a Japanese man paid around 60,000 dollars for a 119-year-old pair of Levi Strauss 501 jeans. The oldest intact pair of Levi s jeans, however, dates back to They were unearthed 15 years ago in a former silver mine in the Mojave desert and are now exhibited in the Levis Strauss & Co. Archives in San Francisco. Their estimated value is 150,000 dollars and they are an exhibit of which Lynn Downey, archivist at Levi Strauss & Co., is particularly proud. She has been taking care of the stock of museum-worthy Levi s jeans for 24 years and manages several thousand garments, including outfi ts worn by Elizabeth Taylor and The Rolling Stones. Japanese luxury jeans The former workers uniform has moved up the career ladder with some manufacturers producing luxury designer versions. For example Donwan Harrell: Hollywood stars such as Brad Pitt or Halle Berry are among the customers that buy his premium PRPS label. The designer uses only African cotton, which is woven on historic looms in Japanese family-run businesses. The handmade trousers undergo a special process to give them a used, torn and worn look. Toshikiyo Hirata applies a similarly artistic approach to the traditional production of his custom-made Kapital jeans. Since 1984 he and his workforce have been producing bespoke individual handmade garments for customers from all over the world in the Japanese town of Kojima. On request his trousers can be adorned with gold studs, which are designed personally by Hirata himself. This type of craftsmanship takes time and comes at a cost. Acity of many faces a lot of big cities are described this way but there can hardly be a town more worthy of this description than Barcelona. This is due to, among other things, the geographical location of Spain s second biggest city between the Pyrenees and the Mediterranean Sea. Surrounded on three sides by mountains, its east side looks out onto the wide expanse of the sea. Its sandy beaches are a popular place for the people of Barcelona to meet. People come from almost all over the world to live and work in the capital city of the indepen dent province of Catalonia. 16 per cent of the 1.6 million inhabitants come from abroad. People from Barcelona are said to be very hard-working, says Loli Valencia. The 45-year-old is Head of Cross-border Marketing for EOS Spain. A city of architecture Barcelona s many faces are due to the numerous famous architects who have shaped the cityscape. Walking through the city, some visitors might feel as though they are wandering through a huge architectural museum. The Gothic Quarter is a good example. It is located in the centre of the old city and encompasses La Seu Cathedral and many other churches. Football, beer and good food The city enters a slightly different mode when FC Barcelona are playing at home: The streets are deserted, says Valencia. She is not a real football fan, but she knows just how much the team has become synonymous with people s loyalty to Catalonia. Barcelona s cuisine is also typically Catalan. An interesting fact: In Barcelona you don t eat your bread with butter, but with tomatoes, explains Valencia. Further specialities are seafood and botifarra amb mongetes, a traditional sausage served with beans. And if you want to fi nd a suitable drink, Barcelona has a wide range to choose from, including beer from the Moritz brewery or Vinho verde from the Penedès, a white wine from a winegrowing area close by.
