(1977), Exploratory Data Analysis, Addison-Wesley Reading Massachusetts. The statistical data analysis and the underlying stochastic modeling of processes have become a standard application in many areas of technology, science and economy. This development has been strongly encouraged by the wide availability nowadays of corresponding computer technology (hardware and software). The applications of statistical methods in data analysis vary from fundamental descriptive and explorative methods (e.g. possibilities of graphical representation of data) to highly-developed inductive methods (e.g. hypothesis tests or non parametrical regression methods). An efficient representation of data by means of different indices (e.g. for location and variation) and graphical means can for example yield insights into the data structure of test results. Using inductive statistical methods (e.g. correlation analysis and regression analysis or significance test) it is possible to draw statistically founded conclusions and for example decide whether an effect is statistically significant or whether a purely random behaviour has been observed. Knowledge of the various statistical methods is fundamental for the adequate planning of empirical trials (e.g. test planning). Fundamental knowledge of probability calculus is required in particular to deal adequately with inductive statistical methods. The practical application of statistical methods occurs by using suitable software. Standard methods have already been implemented nowadays in widely-available standard software (e.g. MS-Excel) but highly developped special statistics software packages have meanwhile also become available to everyone for free as open source software (e.g. R). An introduction to the statistics package R constitutes part of this lecture. Seite 6

Particular attention will be paid to the industries in Asia, including Japan, and North America. Wood is the dominant building material for North America s residential buildings more than 80 percent of the more than 1.5 million residential new single family homes that are built annually are timber buildings. There is a very efficient distribution and retail system for the large quantities of materials that are needed to construct these buildings. Whereas the building market is dominated by softwoods, large quantities of hardwoods are harvested and used for furniture, flooring and kitchen cabinets, among others. Globalization has become a reality much so for the wood industries. Tree growth, processing and manufacturing of wood and wood products take place where the costs are lowest around the globe. Transportation has become a less decisive issue in determining the best (cheapest?) manufacturing location. The course will show recent developments and trends that will shape the future. Asia The meaning of the wood industry in the Malaysian economy Development and statistical data of the furniture industry Development and statistical data of the timber-frame construction sector Development and statistical data of the industry of derived timber products Import and export of wood products Future markets for wood products Efficiency of the Malaysian wood industry North America The North American situation in the global wood economy Development and statistical data of the North American market Japan The meaning of timber-frame construction for the Japanese market Development and statistical data of the Japanese wood economy Seite 10

12 Observations Bemerkungen seminar English seminar paper (to be submitted in English) colloquium --- The reading list will be recommended by the lecturer during the course Globalization is the new driving force for almost all economies throughout the world. This trend is also shaping the wood industries one might just want to look at the increasing shipments of German softwoods to the United States. The course tries to give students an idea of what is happening globally, where the future markets are, where the timber will come from and how small and medium-sized companies can successfully adapt to the new realities. Andreas Kaufmann at the University Rosenheim in the winter term minimum number of participants: 5 2 contact hours/week lecture 2 contact hours/week tutorial 150 hours, of which 60 contact hours 60 hours self-directed study, seminar paper 30 hours preparation and follow-up work at home, exam preparation Admittance to the Master Programme of Wood Technology, fundamental knowledge of current engineering methods, clear representation of complex relations Students after completion of this course will be able to identify new subject areas in need of further research, to describe the essential core tasks of a research resp. development paper and to effect the transfer of research results into practice. The aim is to acquire independently new subject areas for research and development tasks, which e.g. due to economical or normative necessities are deemed worthy of being researched and developed. In order to be able to describe new issues, students have to learn methodologies for compiling already available knowledge and describing required know-how. In this connection, in addition to the ability to perform research, an understanding spanning all subjects and materials for available and new technologies is required. The result can thus be that students, in the framework of this course, describe the contents of the Project Thesis and of the Master Thesis and combine them if necessary with a research proposal. methodology of research project initialisation of research and development projects on the basis of new ideas resp. of business operation or other necessities project description in relation to process, costs and benefits of research projects methodology of project management; description of instruments for coordinating research projects in terms of contents, personnel and finances methodology for technology transfer of research results in practice methodology for describing and representing research results in corresponding research resp. development reports matching project results with the needs of the market presentation of project proposals and discussion about contents and substance of the work transfer of research and development results tutorials practical courses English Seite 14
