5 Inequality Causes Illness Illness Causes Inequality Ungleichheit macht krank Krankheit macht ungleich Inequality causes illness. Factors such as education, income and living circumstances have a huge effect on our health. What is the connection between socioeconomic inequality and the impact upon health? Do incentive systems strengthen inequality? Where can or should health policy intervene in order to ensure equality of opportunity? Illness creates inequality. How can we ensure that those with a need for intensive care, those suffering from chronic illness and those in their vicinity have a substantial voice? How can we compensate for disadvantages caused by illness? The Alpbach Health Symposium will deal with the question of which role to assign state provision in order to eliminate the close connection between inequality and illness. How can social exclusion due to illness be minimised? How can we motivate people to take responsibility for their own health? Ungleichheit macht krank. Faktoren wie Bildung, Einkommen und Lebensumstände wirken sich massiv auf unsere Gesundheit aus. Worin besteht der Zusammenhang zwischen sozioökonomischen Ungleichgewichten und gesundheitlichen Auswirkungen? Verstärken Anreizsysteme Ungleichgewichte? Die Alpbacher Gesundheitsgespräche widmen sich der Frage, welche Rolle dem Staat zukommt, um die enge Verbindung zwischen Ungleichheit und Krankheit zu lösen. The initiatives are divided up in four clusters: I: Equality of Opportunity and Access to Preventive Care II: Technology and Innovation III: Migration IV: Dealing with Illness and Death Which initiatives can be taken as examples for Austria? Together with a team of professional facilitators, the pioneers and participants will develop suggestions on how to improve the Austrian health care and social system. Through fast action, many serious illnesses have been avoided and homeless people have been transferred to sheltered accommodations. Eine Ärztin behandelt gemeinsam mit StreetworkerInnen obdachlose LinzerInnen direkt vor Ort. Die PatientInnen werden unbürokratisch betreut, es wird nicht geprüft, ob sie krankenversichert sind. Durch rasches Handeln konnten bereits etliche schwere Erkrankungen vermieden werden und Obdachlose in betreutes Wohnen vermittelt werden. Ernst Achleitner Managing Director and Psychotherapist, Sozialverein B37, Linz 14:00 17:00 HOTEL ALPHOF CLUSTER I I.02 HPSS Health Promoting Secondary Schools in Iceland I.02 HPSS Health Promoting Secondary Schools in Island ENGLISH LANGUAGE HPSS is a long-term project currently being undertaken by all secondary schools in Iceland. Each school-year, a special emphasis is placed on one of the four main themes: Nutrition, Exercise, Mental Health & Lifestyle. The activities include the (in)formal curriculum in health, the creation of a healthy school environment, the provision of health services and the involvement of the family and wider community. HPPS heißt ein Projekt zur Gesundheitsförderung in höheren Schulen (in der Sekundarstufe), das derzeit in ganz Island durchgeführt wird. In jedem Jahr wird ein anderer Themenschwerpunkt gesetzt: Ernährung, Turnen, psychische Gesundheit und Lebensstil. Aktivitäten beinhalten einen (in)formellen Lehrplan für Gesundheit, die Schaffung eines gesunden Schulumfelds, das Angebot für Gesundheitsvorsorge sowie die Einbeziehung der Familie und des weiteren Umfelds. 13 Breakout 14:00 17:00 HOTEL ALPHOF CLUSTER I I.03 AmberMed Medical Help for the Uninsured I.03 AmberMed Medizinische Hilfe für unversicherte Menschen For over ten years, a team of 71 doctors, interpreters, assistants and therapists working in a voluntary capacity, as well as 80 cooperation partners, has been offering outpatient medical provision, advice and pharmaceutical help for people without insurance. In 2014 alone, more than 2,000 patients were treated in Vienna and the surrounding areas. For over 25 years, a group of committed doctors has been drawing attention to healthy and environmentally sustainable means of production and ways of life with initiatives in Austria and internationally. Prevention and environmental justice are the focal points of the work. Klimawandel, Luftverunreinigungen, Lärm, Chemikalien, elektromagnetische Felder u.v.m. wirken sich nachweislich auf Gesundheit und Wohlbefinden aus. Seit über 25 Jahren macht eine Gruppe engagierter Ärztinnen mit Initiativen in Österreich und international auf gesunde und umweltverträgliche Lebens- und Produktionsweisen aufmerksam. Access to detailed medical records enables remote specialists to make useful consultations, and allows patients to make better healthcare decisions. Health-E-Net bietet PatientInnen in unterversorgten Gebieten in Kenia einen einfachen Zugang zu hochqualifizierten SpezialistInnenmeinungen und unterstützt so PatientInnen bei der Suche nach einer zeitgerechten, adäquaten Behandlung. Ein globales Netzwerk an freiwilligen SpezialistInnen bietet Konsultationen über eine sichere, von PatientInnen kontrollierte digitale Plattform an. Der Zugang zu detaillierten medizinischen Aufzeichnungen erlaubt den SpezialistInnen eine aussagekräftige Fern-Diagnose, sodass PatientInnen bessere Entscheidungen für Ihre Gesundheit treffen können. 15 Breakout 14:00 17:00 HOTEL ALPHOF CLUSTER I I.06 Healthacross in Practice Cross-border Access to the Healthcare Systems in Lower Austria and South Bohemia I.06 Healthacross in Practice Grenzüberschreitende Gesundheitsversorgung Niederösterreich-Südböhmen In the "shared" city of Gmünd/Ceské Velenice, it is shown how inhabitants of a region can have efficient access to medical provision across borders. Czech patients do not have to travel to the Czech hospital 60 km away, but instead first receive outpatient medical care in the nearby hospital in Lower Austria. In der geteilten Stadt Gmünd/Ceské Velenice wird gezeigt, wie man BewohnerInnen einer Region über Staatsgrenzen hinweg einen effizienten Zugang zur Gesundheitsversorgung ermöglichen kann. Tschechische PatientInnen müssen nicht in das 60km entfernte tschechische Krankenhaus fahren, sondern erhalten erstmals eine ambulante medizinische Behandlung im nahegelegenen niederösterreichischen Krankenhaus. With the prevention project SALTO, two Salzburg universities aim to reach kindergartens and families in difficult social environments.
