3 Welcome at Humboldt Graduate School Willkommen an der Humboldt Graduate School The aim of the Humboldt Graduate School is to provide doctoral candidates of Humboldt-Universität with an excellent framework for their work by offering a broad and comprehensive education. Our trainings are mainly designed for doctoral candidates of our member programs. If workshops are not completely booked, individual doctoral candidates of Humboldt-Universität can participate within the Last Minute Offer. Aufgabe der Humboldt Graduate School ist es, den Doktorand/innen der Humboldt-Universität einen ausgezeichneten Rahmen für Ihre Arbeit sowie ein vielfältiges und überfachliches Angebot zu bieten. 7 Our Offers Unsere Angebote Our event program at Humboldt Graduate School enables you to update and develop your skills. Our Transferable Skills Training is divided into different sections. Usually, the programs cover the costs. SCIENCE SKILLS TRAINING (SC) This section promotes the professional competence of young researchers. Events in this category focus on communication with media and scientifi c presentation of research results in written and oral forms. Furthermore this section fosters training for young researchers didactical and pedagogical performance with our events Teaching Skills for Junior Scientists which is acknowledged as a module of the university teaching certifi cate by Berliner Zentrum für Hochschullehre. MANAGEMENT SKILLS TRAINING (MA) These interdisciplinary events are aimed at widening your personal career opportunities. Therefore we offer training in project and event management, management of personal knowledge as well as media training for researchers. CAREER PLANNING (CA) Holding a PhD is a big step towards an academic career. To manage this step successfully, we support you with workshops giving an overview on current trends of research career development in Europe and job application practice. As networking is important for your own career we encourage you to exchange experiences with colleagues in our workshops and lectures. COACHING (CO) We provide workshops on time- and selfmanagement to make sure you get support on organizing your dissertation. In addition to these workshops, you can also take advantage of our individual coaching. MENTORING Mentoring is useful if you already want to gain some insights in your favored professional fi eld. It helps you to get in touch with people from academia as well as economy. Our Workshops are taught in the language in which they are announced. Due to our international target group we offer most courses in English. 10 PREPARING FOR THE DISPUTATION (NATURAL/ LIFE SCIENCES) SCIENTIFIC WRITING (LIFE SCIENCES) EFFECTIVE GRANT WRITING FOR SCIENTISTS (NATURAL/ LIFE SCIENCES) Trainer: Date: Target Group: Dr. Matteo Garavoglia or Candidates in the 3 rd year of PhD studies The seminar aims at preparing you for the thesis defense by honing your presentation skills so you can argue your points convincingly and think on your feet during the question and answers session. Responding to typical questions which may come up during the defense will also be practiced in simulated scenarios. Furthermore the workshop will provide necessary information about the formal procedure, the requirements and social setting of a PhD examination. Selecting a committee: what should I take into account? The Do s and Don ts in oral PhD examinations How do I argue and convince people of my academic achievements? How do I deal with stage fright? How do I structure the preparation phase most effectively? How do I stay motivated in the final stretch? Trainer: Date: Target Group: Adam S. Wilkins or Candidates in the 1 st or 2 nd year of PhD studies The objectives of the first day are to understand the different kinds of scientific writing and their differing requirements, to know what some useful preparatory steps in writing are, to learn to develop and keep to a plan for writing an article and to understand what is involved in collaborations with co-authors. The objective of the second day is to understand how to achieve the three essential elements of scientific writing: accuracy of content; an interesting treatment; a clear piece of writing. Before the workshop participants will be asked to prepare an outline or draft of a planned research article and to write a draft Abstract of the article. The qualities of good scientific writing Types of writers Advantages and potential problems in having co-authors How to survive problems of being a nonnative English speaker The basic structure of research articles versus review articles Making the Abstract and introduction interesting Choosing illustrative material (diagrams, halftones, graphs, tables) Trainer: Dr. Christina Schütte Date: Target Group: Candidates in the 2 nd or 3 rd year of PhD studies The aim of this course is to familiarize participants with the strategies for writing successful grant/fellowship applications to various funding bodies. It consists of lecture-style sequences with active participation by the audience dealing with the theory of good scientific writing, the basics of grant applications and the principles of different funding bodies, as well as hands-on exercises on aim definition, structuring a workplan and writing a grant summary. Additional information and exercises on writing good scientific texts in English will deepen the writing experience. Participants will be asked to prepare a short mini-grant application (4 pages + Scientific CV) in preparation to the course, which will be due approx. 5 days before the start of the course please take this into consideration when planning participation in this course. These applications will be evaluated by other participants individually before the course and in an evaluation session within the course and each participant will also evaluate 3-4 proposals by others in the 4-5 days before course start. This will provide extensive feedback for all participants on their applications, but most importantly, will provide a clear impression of the situation and the view of potential evaluators. The aim of this workshop is to provide you with the skills needed for writing high quality reviews. You learn to organise dispersed information, to design knowledge maps and to plan text structures. Time-saving techniques are trained and you are encouraged to start immediately with your writing project. Narrative reviews versus systematic reviews Structure of systematic reviews Structure of narrative reviews: storyline, sections, paragraphs Writing reviews: when to start, steps to consider, software to use Text quality of reviews: quality criteria and checklists Publishing reviews: journals, topics, cooperations Short lectures provide information and tips and extended exercises train the efficiency in scientific writing. Participants gather and share experiences. How to understand the writing process from first ideas to finished article How to explore individual strengths and development areas How to improve collaborations with coauthors How to develop time and self-management strategies Participants know typical elements of research articles Participants understand attributes of high quality research articles Participants train effective working techniques for quality improvement. Publishing research articles in high quality journals is a demanding task. It is a task sometimes very rewarding and sometimes very frustrating. The objectives of this training are: (1) to understand the publication process in peer reviewed journals, (2) to develop individual strategies for writing and publishing research articles. The peer review system: stakeholders, processes, benefits, criticism Planning publications strategically Criteria for journal selection (impact factors, rejection rates, length of time until publication) How to write a review by yourself How to respond to editor s comments What to do in case of rejection To apply for a job means to sell yourself, your skills, your abilities for professional growth. The first step is to know them and to name them. The second step is to know how to describe your competencies, your motivation and your personality, especially when applying for a job with either academic institutions, research departments in major corporations, international companies, public service etc. The third step is to identify the latest trends and to develop a goal-oriented application strategy. PART I: PRESENTING AT CONFERENCES refining one s own talk or presentation they have prepared in advance, giving the presentation, and using body language influentially and with success. Alongside these aspects, participants develop a solid foundation so that they can prepare and give talks that are both professional and authentic. The first step is to discover personal speaking and body language behavior patterns. Participants learn how best to form and present their presentations. They will heighten their own self-perception, and finally, set concrete goals in areas that need improvement. This leads to project delays, inefficient use of resources and often to frustration on the side of the scientists working on the bench. This workshop is designed to improve this situation by supporting starting PhD students in the acquisition of the necessary skills for an effective management of their research project and their personal and private time. It is based on the classical project management and time management tools which are adapted to the need of exploratory scientific projects. The course includes many interactive hands-on exercises in which participants directly apply the learned tools to their every-day situation. They will thus leave the course with first results that can directly be transferred to their work and life situation. Initially, an overview about national and international data protection laws will be provided. In a practical part, ways to secure public data exchange will be demonstrated and tested by the participants. Furthermore tools and platforms for efficient data organization and knowledge exchange are shown. The course concludes with a discussion round about scientific data sharing policies: Data hugging versus open access. The objective of this graduate course is to familiarize the participants with the main aspects of this question and with different schools dealing with it. Since the middle of the 19 th century, three genealogies of reflection on time have developed: 1) the scientific genealogy (thermodynamics and theory of evolution), 2) phenomenological and anthropological aspects of time and 3) the linguistic approach to ordinary language with respects to time. The lecture course deals with these aspects by using sources from different disciplines and by applying the method of close reading.
