3 Berlin 4 6 August 2014 Foreword 3 A warm welcome to the XX th FIT World Congress! You, the over 1,500 participants in this Congress, have come from 70 countries around the globe to discuss developments in the industry and issues concerning the future of our profession with one another. We are delighted to welcome you all to Berlin! The massive response, both to the call for papers and in the registrations, exceeded our boldest expectations, and so we wish to thank all of you who have embarked on the journey to Berlin, individually, in small groups and even in large delegations, to share your knowledge and expand your networks. While the XIX th FIT World Congress in San Francisco put the building of bridges and the connective function of translators and interpreters work in the foreground of the discussions, Berlin sends out a different, but equally clear message to the world: In spite of all the technical and electronic facilities available, human beings who deal creatively with language, convey texts meaningfully in another tongue and in so doing also overcome cultural barriers are needed more than ever in this globalized world. But the conditions in which translators and interpreters work are changing, and those who wish to survive and prosper in the market of the future will have to face new challenges. Some 200 lectures, panel discussions, workshops, poster presentations and CAT tool Q&A sessions will explore the Congress theme of Man versus Machine?, but also highlight the importance of training, professional development and entrepreneurial expertise for interpreters and translators. In addition, around 30 companies will be exhibiting their products and services and providing information on career opportunities for translators and interpreters in their businesses at the trade exhibition and job exchange. The Congress programme combines academic research by university linguists with the wealth of experience of professional practitioners from around the globe, with the common aim of identifying trends and opportunities for language specialists. More than ever before, global networks and an international perspective form the basis of successful work in the profession. And who better to provide a framework for such a global orientation in your own work than the international translators federation FIT? Since its foundation, FIT has invited the entire industry to take part in a joint review of the state of the profession and international networking every three years. This year, the translation world is meeting in Berlin, and we are pleased, in the context of the XX th FIT World Congress, also to be able to join with our colleagues in celebrating the 60 th anniversary of FIT itself: Our global association is FIT for the future! In our role as organizers, we wish all of you who have come from near and far, and in some cases overcome considerable obstacles to do so, an inspiring Congress and a great time in Berlin. Together with you, we hope to identify prospects, expand networks, collect ideas and enjoy the feeling of being part of a vibrant and future-oriented profession. As the number of parking spaces at the Henry Ford Building is limited, we would in all cases recommend you to use public transport. Footpath to the FU Berlin The footpath from the Thielplatz underground railway station to the Henry Ford Building (approx. 10 minutes) is signposted (see also map): Please exit from the Thielplatz station in the direction of travel, turn left when leaving the station building. Take the steps down and turn right into Brümmerstraße. Then turn left after around 100 m into Ihnestraße and bear left after another approx. 80 m into Harnackstraße. The Henry Ford Building is then only approx. 160 m away. You reach the main entrance to the conference by turning left again at the end of the street. Registration documents Immediately on arriving at the Henry Ford Building (or on Sunday afternoon in advance), you should check in as a participant. The check-in desk is located in the left wing on the ground floor, and can be reached via the large lobby of the Henry Ford Building. There, you will receive: Your congress bag with programme booklet and list of participants Your name badge Please wear your name badge at all times in the Henry Ford Building, in the open space outside and in the building on Boltzmannstraße. A prepared receipt for the radio receiver/ headset for the interpreting system. See also Headsets below. Food and drink vouchers worth 7.50 for the summer party on Tuesday evening to celebrate the 60 th anniversary of the FIT (see also Summer party below). These vouchers are only needed for the summer party; to obtain food and beverages during the congress it is sufficient to be visibly wearing your name badge. The vouchers cannot be exchanged for cash, and no refunds will be made for unused vouchers.

Certificate of attendance Please make use of the opportunity to check in early in the Henry Ford Building from 3 p. m. to 7 p. m. on Sunday, 3 August With over 1,500 participants, it may not be possible to avoid delays at the check-in desk, especially during the peak time on Monday morning. You should not, therefore, only aim to arrive at the Henry Ford Building at five minutes to if you want to attend one of the seminars at 9 o clock. The doors to the Henry Ford Building are open from 8 a. m. onwards. Cloakroom The cloakroom is located on the left, directly beside the main entrance on the ground floor. The cloakroom is staffed, but the organisers accept no liability for lost clothing or property. We would like to point out that storage capacity is limited, and we cannot therefore accept any luggage for safekeeping especially on Monday and Wednesday. Food and beverages may not be taken into the main lecture hall, the other lecture halls or the conference rooms. Note: The catering in the breaks and the summer party will take place in the outdoor area behind the Henry Ford Building. Most of the tables there are protected from the sun and rain by large umbrellas. Should, contrary to expectations, the weather during the congress be extremely bad or a storm be brewing, please listen to our announcements. Headsets A number of the presentations will be interpreted (German/English/French, see programme summary on pages 12 17) by colleagues from the Association of Conference Interpreters (VKD im BDÜ e. V.) and from AIIC. Headsets with radio receivers will be issued opposite the cloakroom on the ground floor. The channels to be set on the receivers for specific languages in the individual lecture rooms will be announced before the start of each conference session. Together with the conference documents you receive at the Henry Ford Building, you will NGeneral ban on smoking Please note that smoking is not pemitted anywhere in the building. Evening check-in Sunday, 3 August 2014, 3 p. m. 7 p. m., in the Henry Ford Building Catering Fruit, small snacks, coffee, tea and water are included in the participation fee and will be available at several locations in the Henry Ford Building and the outdoor area during the breaks. Please help yourself as you wish and enjoy your snacks at the bistro tables in the lobbies and outside. Lunch on Monday and Tuesday is also included in the participation fee. Sandwiches are on the menu for Wednesday lunchtime. The lunches will be served at the market stalls in the outdoor area behind the Henry Ford Building. If you are still feeling peckish, or would like something more exotic to drink, our caterers UCS will be offering coffee specialities and cakes, wraps, sandwiches and various juices at a separate stall during the congress. At this stall, you will have to pay for yourself (cash only).

6 6 The Congress at a glance FIT XX th World Congress Free WiFi access throughout the campus of the FU Berlin WLAN: Conference WLAN code: 4auim4fd be given a prepared receipt card which you sign and hand in when collecting a headset with receiver and which is returned when you give them back. Please note that we are obliged to make a charge of for lost or damaged receivers and for lost or damaged headphones (plus VAT in each case) after the conference. Handing in your receipt card constitutes acceptance of these conditions. We would request you therefore in your own interest to handle the equipment carefully. There are only a limited number of receivers and headphones available. If you only need the receiver and headphone for individual sessions, please return them as soon as possible after use and collect new ones when you need them again. All receivers and headphones must in any case be returned each evening. Toilets Toilets are located at the side behind the cloakroom on the ground floor, next to the Senatssaal on the upper floor, and on both levels in Boltzmannstraße. First Aid The first aid room is located in the side wing on the ground floor, near the cloakroom. If you see an accident or need help yourself, please inform our hostesses at one of the information stands. There will be paramedics present at site throughout the Congress. Lifts All the levels of the Henry Ford Building can be reached by lifts. You will find the lift in the front area of the lobby on the left-hand side, directly in front of the passage to the side wing with the cloakroom. The building in Boltzmannstraße has a ramp for access to the 1 st upper floor and a lift to the 2 nd upper floor. If you need a lift in the Boltzmannstrasse building, please ask our staff at the information stand in the entrance area to the building. Internet access There is free WiFi access throughout the campus of the FU Berlin. If you wish to access the internet with your own laptop, please select the WLAN called Conference on your device. Then open a browser window and enter the WLAN code 4auim4fd in the login mask. That code provides you with access to the internet at no cost in the entire FU Berlin campus and in the Seminaris Campus hotel. In addition, notebooks are available for you to use at the Internet Access Point on the upper floor in front of the entrance to the gallery of the main lecture hall.

7 Berlin 4 6 August 2014 The Congress at a glance 7 Summer party on Tuesday evening The summer party to celebrate the 60 th anniversary of the FIT will take place in the outdoor area behind the Henry Ford Building on Tuesday evening. The trio Das Loungehouse will provide a musical accompaniment with summery saxophone sounds, starting at 6 p. m. Enjoy the variety of culinary delights and drinks at the market stalls and pleasant conversations with colleagues and friends! Out of consideration for the neighbours, the summer party will end at 10 p. m. If you wish to continue celebrating after then, please move on to the pubs or bars near your hotel. When you check in, you will receive food and drink vouchers worth The participation fee therefore includes a drink and a snack for everyone taking part (drinks cost 2.50, and food starts at 5.00). You can purchase additional food and drink vouchers at the stall directly beside the rear exit from the Henry Ford Building. The proceeds from the sale of additional food and drink vouchers will be paid into the Congress account and, if that account is in the black, will benefit the FIT. So eat, drink and be merry, as that will not only fortify you, but also the FIT! All the participants in the FIT Congress, all colleagues and companions, are warmly invited to join in these special celebrations on 5 August Note: We reserve the right to cancel the summer party at short notice in the unlikely event of a serious storm, as the safety of all the participants does of course have priority. Networking On Tuesday we will mark out meeting points for the following subject areas: Medical T&I, Legal T&I, Technical T&I and Business and Finance T&I. In addition, there will be a special meeting point for users of Twitter, LinkedIn and XING on Tuesday. Please therefore look out for the beach flags when finding a space in the outdoor area during the breaks. Interesting chats with new friends and colleagues are guaranteed! Furthermore, we will be setting up pinboards in the Job Exchange area on the mezzanine floor for you to display your business cards or small flyers (up to max. DL format) or just leave offers or wanted notices. The distribution or display of flyers and other advertising materials in the Henry Ford Building, in the Boltzmannstraße building and in the outdoor area is otherwise prohibited. You reach that building by leaving the Henry Ford Building through the exit to the outdoor area and then cross the street (approx. 100 m from door to door). 8 8 Welcome messages FIT XX th World Congress Message from Marion Boers, FIT President on the occasion of the XX th World Congress of the International Federation of Translators (FIT), Berlin, 4 6 August 2014 The International Federation of Translators/ Fédération Internationale des Traducteurs has now been supporting translators, interpreters and terminologists for sixty years. The profession is no longer what it was in 1953 it has expanded and diversified in order to meet the needs of globalization and the knowledge society. Member associations now welcome language professionals in the broad sense of the word; we no longer work with pen and paper, but have embraced modern technology. It is a fact that, as in other professions, we could not do our work without machines or technology today. This year s World Congress, so ably organized by the BDÜ, focuses on the theme Man vs. Machine? The Future of Translators, Interpreters and Terminologists. Some practitioners and academics are meeting for three days to discuss the implications of technology and its consequences for the profession. The demands on productivity are ever-increasing and we have powerful tools to help us, but what happens to the individual and to quality in this process? These are just some of the issues that we will touch on and that will remain on the agenda even after we leave Berlin to go back to our daily business. FIT was built as a team effort by voluntary FIT office-bearers over 60 years and supported by a number of different resolutions and initiatives implemented at our world congresses. Over time, and especially in the last few years, FIT s roots on the different continents have become stronger and today we have regional centres in the Americas and Europe. Asia has chosen a slightly different, but equally strong, format of triennial Asian Translators Forums the last ATF took place in Malaysia in 2013 and in 2016 it will be hosted by Xi an International Studies University in China. FIT will continue to develop in the years to come. Global leadership is made easier with regular electronic contact and meetings, but nothing beats a face-to-face meeting and personal networking. We hope you will benefit from this personal interaction at this World Congress, just as it will form the basis for the ongoing exchange of ideas and implementation of FIT s vision of a united voice for translators, interpreters and terminologists in the years to come. This was the vision of the literary translator Pierre François-Caillé, who laid the foundations for a network that now covers the entire globe and is constantly being expanded, even today.

9 Berlin 4 6 August 2014 Welcome messages 9 Message from Irina Bokova, Director-General of UNESCO on the occasion of the XX th World Congress of the International Federation of Translators (FIT), Berlin, 4 6 August 2014 UNESCO/Michel Ravassard I am delighted to greet all participants of the XX th World Congress of the International Federation of Translators. Languages are more than tools for communication. They provide the lens through which the world is understood and the material through which it is voiced. They express the values we share and give shape to ideas, cultural expressions and intangible cultural heritage, linking the past with the future. They are the foundation for human rights and dignity and a channel for communicating and sharing, for strengthening social cohesion and joint action. It is through language that we make sense of the world and that we can transform it for the better. In this spirit, the United Nations General Assembly designated UNESCO as lead agency for the International Year of Languages in The slogan of the International Year Languages Matter provided a framework for a wide range of activities across the world, recognizing the value of languages for cooperation and development. Multilingualism is vital for dialogue and mutual understanding between societies and cultures. This is why UNESCO encourages multilingualism at school as well as in the media, cyberspace, publishing and all aspects of social life, as a way of promoting cultural and linguistic diversity as well as sustainable development. In a world changing quickly, the role of translators, interpreters and terminologists is ever more essential. Local and national languages are treasured by countries and communities as sources of identity and pride at the same time, international languages are valuable means to communicate beyond linguistic barriers or territorial boundaries. Translation can serve as the bridge between the local and international dimensions of everyday life, helping to maintain the world s cultural and linguistic diversity. This is also the spirit guiding the Index Translationum, the world bibliography of translations, managed by UNESCO, as a formidable tool for the dissemination and monitoring of global cultural flows. At this time of great change, I welcome the theme for this year s Congress Man vs Machine? The Future of Translators, Interpreters and Terminologists. UNESCO s partnership with the International Federation of Translators extends back to the Federation s creation six decades ago. The Organization applauds the continued efforts of the Federation and its members throughout the world to promote our shared ideals. I thank all participants for their commitment and wish you all fruitful and stimulating deliberations. Irina Bokova This is also why translation is so essential. Translators and interpreters play an indispensable role in ensuring multilingualism as architects of dialogue, central to the process of exchange and fertilization, which lies at the root of every culture. How can we best integrate the increasingly complex technical tools into our everyday work? What challenges will we be facing in the years ahead? Art & Photo Urbschat The FIT World Congress provides a wonderful opportunity to come together to look for and find answers to these questions. Seeing the big picture is essential for anyone aiming for success in an economy which is becoming more and more globalized. Being exposed to other points of view, exchanging experiences and sharing knowledge all help us to enhance our own profile and develop prospects for the future. But it is not only these professional considerations which make such a large family gathering so attractive. Where else do we have the opportunity to meet so many colleagues with the same working languages and similar specializations, or to develop a personal relationship with contacts we have up to now only interacted with in cyber space? The BDÜ, as the host of this year s FIT Congress, wishes to thank all the member associations of FIT for the trust they exhibited in San Francisco in 2011 when selecting us to organize what is surely the most important meeting of translators and interpreters worldwide. It was an honour, and at the same time a great challenge. In addition, the BDÜ thanks the FIT Council and Executive Committee, and in particular Marion Boers, President of FIT, and Jeannette Ørsted, its Executive Director, for their constructive cooperation during the preparation phase. Further thanks are due to the BDÜ members who volunteered their assistance, the staff of BDÜ Weiterbildungsund Fachverlagsgesellschaft and those at the Federal Head Office for their commitment. The organization of such an event entails considerable effort, which is now being rewarded by a full house in the Henry Ford Building and an outstanding programme.
