Es ist nicht schwer vorherzusagen, dass in den nächsten Jahren weitere Produkte und Prozesse ihren Markt finden werden, darunter fallen die Bioplastik-Aktivitäten von Procter & Gamble, Coca Cola und auch Hyundai. Als Treiber gelten unter anderem: technische Durchbrüche in der Biotechnologie selbst, Vereinfachung komplexer chemischer Verfahren durch biologische Systeme, Kostenreduktion im Vergleich zu chemischen Prozessen, Energieeinsparung im Vergleich zu chemischen Prozessen, gestiegene Bedenken bei der Nutzung von limitierten fossilen Ressourcen, gestiegenes Bewusstsein für den Umweltschutz (z.
