4 Preface 3 Preface Dear Parents, Working in cooperation with parents for their children s educational opportunities this is the aim of a whole range of education facilities and welfare agencies for parents in Tübingen. They offer generally low-cost, professional support to assist you in raising and educating your children. The Intercultural Network for Parents Education (INET) is a third-party funded project we started in November 2010, which has enabled us to support and raise the profile of networks in education facilities and international non-profit associations. The Staff Unit for Equality and Integration of Tübingen hopes that this Handbook of extensive information will quickly help you find the proper counseling center or institution to meet your needs. In particular, families with immigrant background have questions and concerns about their children s education because the education system here functions differently than in their country of origin. The Handbook was developed for this reason. Representatives from numerous education facilities, welfare agencies and international non-profit associations have collaborated on this handbook. I wish to thank them for their cooperation. I am also grateful to the German Federal Ministry of the Interior for supporting the INET Project under the frameworks stipulated by the German Parliament. Have fun reading and discovering new information! Dr. Susanne Omran Equality and Integration
5 4 Intercultural Parent Education What is intercultural parent education? The education and integration of children depends not only on the education system and individual support, but is also strongly influenced by the level of knowledge and support from the parents. The aim of intercultural parent education is to enhance the parents capacity to work together with their children s teachers in a spirit of partnership. Teachers are the most important personal contacts in a child s learning and development process. For us, intercultural parent education encompasses any events, services, courses, counseling and information that strengthen the parenting skills of parents from diverse cultural backgrounds. Intercultural parent education further educates, informs and advises parents on such issues as education, health and nutrition, violence and addiction prevention, child development and puberty, child care and much more. In Tübingen there are a number of education facilities and international non-profit associations that support parents and provide them with meaningful partners in dialogues on different issues. This Intercultural Handbook for Parents arose from the third-party funded project, Intercultural Network for Parents Education (INET) supported by the German Federal Ministry of the Interior. It bundles information on institutions and initiatives that offer resources and services in the area of intercultural parent education.
6 Intercultural Parent Education 5 In addition, it includes numerous intercultural courses and events on education, child-rearing and culture, as well as health and welfare. The Handbook helps you establish contacts, improve communication and meet new people. In the first part of the Handbook, you can find information on non-profit associations, initiatives, welfare agencies, municipal child care facilities, as well as schools and after-school care. The Handbook concludes with a directory of municipal support centers, administrative authorities and consular posts.
