Damit zu den feinen Menus im Restaurant Gathemann in Windhoek ein edler Tropfen gereicht werden kann, ist Restaurantbesitzer Urs Gamma immer auf der Suche nach besonderen Weinen. Fündig wird er natürlich am Westkap in Südafrika, das bekannt für seine Weinanbaugebiete ist. Gamma hält mit einigen Winzern persönlichen Kontakt und bringt deren, bisher relativ unbekannte Weine, nach Namibia. Einer dieser Weinbauern ist Rico Suter. Der geborene Schweizer lebt bereits seit 40 Jahren in Südafrika. Sein Weingut befindet sich im Norden von Worcester, in dem Tal Breedekloof. Worcester ist eines der fünf Weinbau-Distrikte in der Kap-Region und liegt östlich der Drakenstein-Berge. Die gesamte Rebanlage umfasst 50 Hektar. Suter baut den Wein zusammen mit seinen beiden Söhnen Bruno und Carlo an. Die Suters, die immer schon am Naturschutz interessiert waren, nutzen nur 87 ha landwirtschaftlich des insgesamt 794 ha großen Gebietes. Zu den Rebsorten, die bei Suter angebaut werden, gehören auch die für Südafrika seltenen Weine, wie der Petit Verdot, Viognier, Cinsault oder Tannat. Neben den reinen Sortenweinen werden auch interessante Kombinationen wie Caberntet Sauvignon/Petit Verdot und Cabernet Sauvignon/Shriaz hergestellt. Zusätzlich wird noch mit den Weinsorten Cinsault, Tannat und Pinotage experimentiert. Manche Weine haben bei der Veritas-Preisverleihung im Jahr 2007 bereits einige Preise gewonnen. Silber gab es für den Rico Suter Wines Pinotage 2005, und Bronze für den Rico Suter Wines Shiraz Und der Cabernet Sauvignon/Petit Verdot 2005 wurde bei dem Michelangelo-Preisverleih sogar mit Gold ausgezeichnet. Viele Weine erhalten mit der Reife ein besseres Aroma. Deshalb ruht der Wein nach der Abfüllung in die Flasche nochmals zwischen neun und zwölf Monate. Das Prädikat Estate bedeutet, dass alle Kelterungsvorgänge im eigenen Keller stattfinden und sämtliches Traubengut vom eigenen Rebberg stammen muss, was vom Staat kontrolliert wird. Zwar ist bekannt, dass die meisten Rotweine chambriert, also bei Zimmertemperatur getrunken werden sollen, doch die Gradzahl bezieht sich auf die Raumtemperatur, die bei ca. 16 Grad lieg. Der Begriff chambrieren stammt aus einer Zeit, wo es noch keine effizienten Heizungen gab, weshalb die Raumtemperatur damals 16 Grad selten überschritt. n In one or the oldest historical houses in Independence Avenue in Windhoek you will find Restaurant Gathemann. 3 Although modern Windhoek is a fairly young city ( ), from an architectural point of view it can no longer be perceived from a single angle alone. Rather, a number of different styles are discernible, which, if not clearly understood, make Windhoek appear as just another assemblage of smaller and bigger buildings. To the trained eye, however, on closer inspection, a rich tapestry unfolds that is as varied as Namibia s population, as well as its reminiscence of the stark Namibian contrast in both nature and culture, as well as the different urban and rural settlement patterns of its various populations. The German colonial time ( ) brought an architecture that extends from Wilhelmian romanticism, art nouveau, up to an early modernism. Examples of this German imperial romanticism are, for instance, the three castles which remind one of the nostalgia of German nobility. The German church (Christuskirche) in Windhoek carries a whiff of art nouveau, or Jugendstil, as this style was called in Germany at the turn of the century. These later buildings of German colonial time already find themselves on the threshold of a modern style. The best example is the parliament building (Tintenpalast) with its integrated verandas, its clean lines and locally quarried building material that stylistically already point into the future. A peculiar architectural development during the colonial time was the so-called veranda-style that emerged out of necessity and in response to the harsh climatic conditions in the colony. All over Namibia, one can still spot colonial buildings with the integral spacious verandas which are so characteristic of that specific epoch. Even the Parliament building (Tintenpalast) features these large verandas, from both a functional and a decorative point of view. The South-African colonial period ( ) can be divided into two distinctive time-spans. From an architectural point of view, the British-South African mandate period ( ) brought little innovation. The style here was sober and functional, and the world depression, successive periods of severe drought, the remoteness of the country (from both South Africa and from Europe), severely restricted development. The Windhoek High School (built in 1917) is a reminder of this period, and a noteworthy exception to the sober style of the time is the Roman Catholic Cathedral, built in After the Second World War, the political scene in South Africa changed drastically. The war had caused a substantive economical upswing in South Africa, and the National Party, which came to power in 1948, forthwith decided to treat the then SWA as an integral part of the South African Union. Consequently, a building boom took off after 1950 and has continued unabated ever since. A modern Continental style started to manifest itself, as seen in edifices such as the Continental Building (1950), the Main Post Office (1950), the impressive Sam Cohen Building (today the Ministry of Home Affairs (1956)), and the terminal building at the Eros Airport (1959). During the sixties ultra-modern buildings like the State Hospital (1961), the Administrator s Residence (SWA House now State House) (1959), the Legislative Assembly building (today Prime Minister s Office) (1964), the Windhoek Municipal Building (1965) and the Katutura Main Police Station were built. Abstract ornamentation was used in the interiors, and the increasing usage of local building materials such as marble and terrazzo created a totally new type of building in Windhoek. The rapid expansion of Windhoek also brought changes to the urban pattern. During these years, the value of Windhoek s old colonial buildings within the urban context of Windhoek was also being realised, resulting in a number of these being proclaimed national monuments, such as the Eros Fort (1951), the Alte Feste (1957), the John Ludwig Mausoleum (1967), the Equestrian Statue (1969), the Christuskirche (1974), the Roman Catholic Cathedral (1983), the Old Prison (1986) as well as the historical cemeteries of the Old Location and in Robert Mugabe Avenue (formerly Leutwein Street). From seventies and well into the eighties there was a continuation of modern architecture. A number of brilliant architects designed buildings such as the Metje & Behnsen Building, the Trust Bank Building and the Kalahari Sands Hotel. Fortunately, this happened without the architecture degenerating into the dullness of those cities where modern has become synonymous with cheap and monotonous. Elsewhere the architects had become disillusioned with this monotony. They started to look into the past and began to experiment with what history had handed over to them. The eighties saw, amongst others, a development of a style which became known as post-modernism which plays on the contrast of old and new, and also takes into account the direct vicinity of a new building by borrowing from it in the language of architecture. For instance, the ENOK (today NDC) building was erected right into the inner courtyard of the Old Windhoek Prison, thereby softening its grim original function, while time retaining it as a national monument at the same. Buildings of the nineties like the Wernhil Centre, Mutual Platz and the State Herbarium all incorporate architectural elements borrowed from German colonial architecture, especially in the design of their roof sections, and yet remain original structures in their own right. Two recent developments, the Franco-Namibian Cultural Centre and the National Archives and Library, have old historical buildings integrated into their designs, thereby providing, through their stark contrasts, stunning syntheses. The latest highlights in this breathtaking architectural development in the capital of Namibia are the Supreme Court, the recently completed Reserve Bank building and the National Assembly building. While the latter reflects the proximity of the Parliament Building (Tintenpalast), the former are two sovereign buildings in their own right, embodying the proud self esteem of a new nation. Although they contrast the effects of rapid urbanisation, the influx of new influences, mirrored for instance in the Chinese Pavilion in Zoo Park, the Qumran Mosque and the Abyssinian Restaurant, it is also true that a truly democratic society, where basically everything goes, will be recognised by the variety of its people as well as its architectural forms. Part of this will be the squatter camp, the average urban dwelling as well as the proud and elegant high-rise building. The fact that they coexist peacefully in Windhoek may be an indication of the underlying tolerance of its inhabitants and the creativity and talent of its architects and artists. 3 June 2009

4 Penduka... wake up P enduka is the Oshivambo and Otjiherero word for wake up. The Penduka Women s Craft Co-operative has as its aim to encourage Namibian women to become proactive and productive and to take their destiny into their own hands. They have to wake up to grasp the opportunities. Some of the skills these women get trained in include needlework, embroidery and numerous other handcrafts. So far more than 500 Namibian women of various ethnic communities, including San, Damara, Nama, Otjiherero, Himba and Oshivambo, have received training in a variety of handcraft skills and are now actively working n and earning an income. 5 Heroes Acre: Namibian history cast in stone By Marc Springer While its aesthetic value is debatable and its political subtext dubious, there is no question that the Heroes Acre is Namibia s most tant national monument. Situated at the foot of the Auas Mountains about ten kilometres outside Windhoek on the road leading from the capital city to Rehoboth, the memorial was inaugurated in August 2002 following a construction period of 13 months. The multi-million-dollar project was highly controversial considering the costs involved and because local building companies were largely sidelined during the construction process in favour of a corporation from North Korea. Covering an area of 732 hectares donated by the City of Windhoek the site includes a parking area, an open platform for functions and parades as well as a public grandstand that can accommodate 5000 people. The sprawling site is nestled between two hills and surrounded by a three kilometres long imporpalisade fence. The actual monument comprises a white obelisk as the main focal point, rising 36 meters and representing a sword as symbol of the Namibian liberation struggle. Just beneath the imposing tower stands the eight meters high statue of the Unknown Soldier holding an AK-47 assault rifle in one hand and brandishing an anti-tank grenade in the other. The bronze sculpture weighing 4 tons represents all Namibian heroes who died in the fight for independence and bears a canny resemblance to former president Sam Nujoma. This likeness seems more than a coincidence: After all, the plinth of the statue is inscribed with a dedication cast from Nujoma s own handwriting and the construction of the Heroes Acre was motivated by his initiate. Beneath the statue lies the grave of the Unknown Soldier, symbolizing the final resting place of all Namibian combatants who lost their lives during the war for self determination and whose remains were never located. Soil collected from different mass graves like Kassinga in Angola, Oshatotwa in Zambia and Ongulumbashe in Namibia is buried in this symbolic grave. Photos: Marc Springer another platform featuring an oversized replica of a medal coated in gold which is dedicated to all Namibians who sacrificed their lives for the sovereignty of the country. Just beneath the medal the heart of the memorial is represented by an eternal flame burning 24 hours as a reminder of the undying spirit of freedom and as a place where people can pay homage to the fallen soldiers by laying down wreaths. On either side of the eternal flame three pillars in black granite with engraved wreath in bronze represent the symbolic guard of honour being custodian of the Heroes Acre. The actual grave sites are positioned just above the eternal flame, about half way up on the stairs ascending to the obelisk. The area can accommodate 174 graves of which nine are symbolically dedicated to the pioneers of early resistance against colonial occupation being Kaptein Hendrik Witbooi, Captein Jacob Marenga, Chief Kahimemua Nguvauva, Chief Samuel Maharero, Chief Nehale Iya Mpingana, Chief Mandume ya Ndemufayo, Chief Ipumbu ya Tshilongo, Chief Hosea Kutako and Mama Kakarakuze Mungunda. Behind the tower facing the grave area below, a bronze mural depicts Namibia s journey to independence. Viewed from left to right, the bronze relief portrays this voyage chronologically, from the uprising against Imperial Germany s colonial rule to the mass mobilization against the South African regime to the attainment of independence in From the mural a staircase leads up the hill to a pavilion which affords a panoramic view over the site and the capital city beyond. A restaurant further down offers a variety of dishes. The Heroes Acre is a national heritage site where guides familiar with Namibia s history present tours of the memorial on request. An entrance fee is payable at the main entrance where the statue of two young ladies in a kneeling position and holding a bouquet of flowers are positioned as a welcoming gesture to the site. While the monument was constructed in recognition and remembrance to all Namibians who contributed to the countries independence many feel its primary aim is to pay homage to the former liberation movement and now ruling party Swapo. Irrespective of whether the grandiose monument contributes to the expressed goal of national reconciliation, unity and patriotism or represents a pompous and misplaced expression of political self-aggrandisement, one thing is certain: Heroes Acre is the largest and most elaborate monument in Namibia and well worth a visit. n Additional Information: National Heritage Council of Namibia Tel: /258069/ Fax: , nmc@iway.na 5 June 2009

This is not the scene of a rock show in Europe or America, but the eye of the storm of the annual Windhoek Metal Fest, the only international heavy metal festival hosted in Namibia (or Africa for that matter, with the notable exception of South Africa). Although people wouldn t associate a country with Namibia with metal music, there has always been a small but vibrant scene here. It is definitely gaining traction and it s adding a very unique flavour to the cultural spectrum in this country, says Sven Heussen, guitarist of the Windhoek-based band submission. Hosting the Metal Fest is a great honour for us and we re definitely providing something that goes way beyond the standard run-ofthe-mill entertainment options in Namibia. On the 27 th of June the third rendition of the Fest will take place at the Blitzkrieg Bar in Windhoek with a diverse line-up of local and regional bands eager to rock the socks off Namibian music fans. The fact that submission has reached an international audience by means of savvy internet promotion and overseas interest in their latest releases has culminated recently in a fullpage profile of the band in Germany s Metal Hammer magazine, one of Europe s biggest selling music publications. This has really put our band and the local metal scene on the map. Fans and bands from all corners of the World are getting in touch and have taken an interest, says Willie Grobler, the front man of the group. The next step for us now is to secure a distribution deal for our next recording, which should be out in August, latest. Another important milestone will be the performance of the band at the Metal 4 Africa festival in Stellenbosch, South Africa on August 1. Although metal is normally associated with Western culture, it is primarily a musical style for individualistic people who appreciate the art of musicianship and lyrical content that challenges the norm. In this respect white and black metal heads have a lot in common and this commonness is celebrated together at the shows. According to the band one very important factor for musicians and fans alike, is the fact that metal music is 100% organic. As opposed to other genres no playbacks or electronic ghost musicians are utilized giving metal shows an authentic energetic and high-energy vibe that is very unique. The musicians playing in submission have along history of involvement in the local and regional rock scene and played in previous bands such as Arcana XXII (Namibia) and Mjollnir (South Africa). It is their absolute devotion to this style of music that has seen them through despite minimal support from radio, for example. Local radio is still playing it safe and they re absolutely underestimating the interest in metal, especially amongst the kids. As long as we play live and keep it interesting there will be a very nice niche market for us. The print-media helps a lot and we ve had no problems getting corporate sponsorships for events like the Metal Fest. Also, the internet has leveled the playing field, everyone who s interested can have access to our music, says Stefan Steyn, also guitar player in submission. submission is by no means the only metal band active in Namibia at this point in time. Others include the party metallers Delusions of Grandeur, as well as the more extreme sounding acts Fading Reign and Fallen Nemesis. These bands all have their own individual style and add to the vibrancy of this unique scene on the southern tip of Africa. 7 Avis Dam: A sanctuary for animals, an oasis for city dwellers By Marc Springer When it comes to recreational areas, residents of Windhoek are not exactly spoilt for choice. Strictly speaking the only open space available, where inhabitants of the capital city can spend some leisure time in the outdoors is Avis Dam located on the outskirts of town in close proximity to the residential area of Avis. Completed by the former SWA Administration for the Windhoek municipality in 1933 the dam is nestled at the foothills of the Eros and Auas mountains, surrounded by gently sloping ridges and serves as a sanctuary for a variety of birds and mammals. The artificial lake not only attracts animals but is also the primary location for people looking for some relaxation in the open air and a place to go jogging, canoeing, fishing, cycling, bird watching, horse riding or walking the dog. Situated a mere five minute drive from the city centre in the direction of the international airport, the parking area next to the sluices of the dam is a testament to its popularity, being packed with cars over weekends and after office hours. The same applies to the second access point further South in the flood plain area close to the railway bridge which is a familiar beacon to regular visitors. The wetlands area around the dam is under the curatorship of the non-profit organization Friends of Avis (FoA), which is a subgroup of the umbrella body Greenspace, an organisation striving for the protection of open spaces and unproclaimed areas in urban areas. In keeping with its mission of establishing and maintaining greenbelts in Windhoek, Greenspace signed a 30 year lease agreement with the municipality in April In terms of this Avis Dam is a popular recreational area frequented mostly by people walking their dogs. Photos: Marc Springer agreement Greenspace assumed custody over the area based on a management plan detailing how it should be preserved in its natural state. Under these provisions no litter may be dumped or permanent structure erected at the site and vehicles are restricted to the parking terrain. Under the auspices of the FoA awareness campaigns relating to conservation of natural habitats were launched and fishing regulations drawn up. In addition the parking ground was upgraded and a security company appointed to ensure the safety of visitors. Security guards are on duty each day of the week at the parking site as well as several designated points along the main walking routes leading around the dam. They are in radio contact with each other and can involve ProForce or the City Police in case of emergency. Since these measures are rather costly the organisation introduced an entrance fee of five Dollars per vehicle. Member of Greenspace who are charged 500 Dollars for their affiliation to the organisation are exempted from this payment. The establishment of FoA in 1994 was prompted partly as a public response to concerns about possible building developments in the area as well as illegal wood cutting and poaching. While Greenspace is not opposed in principal to any commercial utilization of the land around Avis Dam, it is worried that any urbanization may lessen, damage or even destroy the unspoilt nature and aesthetic appeal of the locality or restrict public access to the site. The growing appeal of the dam is partly owed to the good rainfalls in the capital city ensuring that the artificial storage lake was filled above 60 percent of its capacity the last several years. Following an extended period where the dam was virtually empty, this has drawn over 180 bird species back to the area, among them Flamingos, African Fish Eagles, Great White Pelicans, Black Cormorants as well as a variety of Ducks and Geese. Furthermore the plentiful rain of the last few seasons has brought fish back to the dam, which in turn supports a variety of birds and draws the occasional angler to the water. The Avis Dam is not just a heaven for wildlife and an oasis for residents of Namibia s capital city. 8 H obby-astronomin Sonja Itting-Enke betreibt außerhalb Windhoeks ihr eigenes Observatorium. Die Autodidaktin studiert die Sterne nicht nur im Eigeninteresse, sondern lädt auch Interessierte, Schulklassen und Reiseleiter ein, auf ihrem Anwesen zwischen den Auasbergen die Sterne zu beobachten. Eine halbe Autostunde außerhalb Windhoeks wird die asphaltierte Straße zur Schotterpiste, nichts als das Grün der Auasberge umgibt einen. Weit oben auf den Bergen steht ein gar nichts so namibisches Backsteinhaus in weiß, doch es versteckt allerlei namibische Geheimnisse. Hier weit abseits Hauptstadt wohnt eine junggebliebene 78-Jährige, die sich ihren Lebenstraum verwirklicht hat: Ein eigenes Observatorium. Die Astronomie in Namibia beliebter zu machen, liegt Itting-Enke besonders am Herzen. In Namibia sind optimale Sternbeobachtungen möglich. Hier verlieren wir fast nichts am Himmel, sondern sehen im Laufe des Jahres fast alle Sterne. Oft ist sie entsetzt, dass sich in Namibia trotz des freien Blicks auf den Himmel nur so wenige für Astronomie interessieren. Ihr eigenes Interesse an den Sternen erweckte damals ihr Physiklehrer. Der alte Mann kehrte 1945 aus dem Krieg zurück und konnte seine Schüler kaum für sein Fach begeistern bis es bei der Schule einen Waldbrand gab und der Blick zum Himmel freigelegt wurde.. Da ist die Venus, sagt er zu seinen Schülern und wenn wir jetzt ein Teleskop hätten, könnten wir die Jupitermonde sehen. Damit war das Interesse der 16-jährigen Sonja geweckt. Voller Tatendrang stellte sie viele Fragen und lieh sich von ihrem Vater, einem Elektrizitätswerkbetreiber, das Teleskop, und die Klasse begann, Monde zu beobachten und astronomische Rechnungen zu erstellen. Von da an war die junge Frau von der Sehkraft eines Teleskopes fasziniert. Doch lange hatte sich die junge Frau nach ihrer Schulzeit nicht mehr intensiv mit Astronomie beschäftigt. Ein Zwischenfall schaffte ihr den Zugang zur Astronomie: Bei einem Schulausflug ihrer Kinder entdeckte die Mutter in der Hütte der Wildlife-Stätte auf den Höhen Windhoeks eine Sternenkarte. Damit kam ihr die Idee, Astronomie auch an der Schule ihrer Kinder, der Deutschen Höheren Privatschule (DHPS) prominenter zu machen. Sie baute ein Schulplanetarium und machte auch außerhalb der DHPS Projekte, wie auch in Katutura. Die Wissenschaft gehört allen, sagt Sonja IttingEnke. Deshalb schickte man 1986 auch viele interessierte Astronomen aus Deutschland zu ihr nach Windhoek, um den Halleyschen Kometen besser beobachten zu können. Sie bekam viele Meldungen von Namibiern, auch von Jugendlichen, die den Kometen beobachten wollten. So eröffnete sie 1986 im leerstehenden Schülerheim von Karibib ein ganzes Astronomielager, zu dem auch Laien Zugang haben sollten. Das Interesse an den Sternen wurde immer größer und so schlich sich die Ehefrau häufig nachts raus, um die Sterne zu beobachten. Als ihr Mann dann nach 36 Jahren Ehe die Scheidung wollte, nahm sie das Großprojekt in Angriff: Sonja Itting-Enke baute ihre eigene Sternwarte auf. Lange zog sie durch Windhoek und suchte einen geeigneten Platz. Der sollte nicht zu weit weg sein von der Stadt, um auch Schulklassen Besuche zu ermöglichen. Als idealer Platz erschien ihr da ein Anwesen zwischen den Auasbergen, die das Straßenlicht der Stadt zurückhalten. Genauestens rechnete sie den Bau durch, um Geld für Teleskope übrig zu haben. Bis auf den Rohbau stellte sie das Haus selbst fertig. Als der Bau nach einigen Schwierigkeiten endlich beendet war, konnte sie auch praktische Kurse für Reiseleiter anbieten. So bin ich mir sicher, dass sie den Touristen keinen Unsinn erzählen, sagt sie über die Reiseleiterkurse. Deshalb stellt sie sich auch immer wieder gerne bereit, ihnen Auffrischungskurse anzubieten. Ihr größtes Erlebnis neben dem Halleyschen Kometen war der McNaught-Komet, der 2007 zu sehen war. Eine große Nachfrage am Sternebeobachten lief in ihrem Observatorium ein. Lange war unsicher, ob sie die Erwartungen der Besucher erfüllen konnte, denn der Komet war anfangs nicht zu sehen. Ich war übersiedelt von Leuten, die begeistert waren, den Kometen zu sehen, erzählt sie fasziniert. Als Teil ihrer Öffentlichkeitsarbeit bietet IttingEnke nicht nur besondere Beobachtungen wie bei Mondfinsternis oder Begegnungen von Planeten an, sondern besucht auch viele Schulen und bietet dort Astronomieprojekte an. 9 Tintenpalast: Symbol of a painful past and the promise of a better future By Marc Springer Of Windhoek s historically valuable architecture, the parliament building is perhaps the most significant, housing the National Assembly and being the center of the countries legislature. The political importance of the building as seat of parliament is reflected by its elevated position overlooking the central business district of Windhoek. Strangely enough this prominent location almost derailed construction of the complex. When German Imperial Governor Bruno von Schuckmann announced the construction of a new administrative building for the then German South West Africa news spread that the complex was to be erected on a mountain slope dividing Windhoek proper from the residential area of Klein Windhoek. This decision provoked heavy criticism from the general public who felt the chosen site high up on a hill was unsuitable and suggested that government was lacking transparency by retreating to a locality removed from the center of town. Despite the protests the German building company Sander and Kock was commissioned to commence construction on 17. April Except for wood, lime and sand that were locally available, all other building material was imported from Germany and the Cameroon, which like Namibia was a German colony at the time. The building, based on a blueprint of German architect Gottlieb Redecker, who also designed other historical buildings in Windhoek, was completed on schedule in November On 11 May 1914 the so called Landesrat, an advisory council to the Governor, assembled for the first time in the new structure. This body was however disbanded following Germany s surrender in After the building stood vacant for a while, a new legislative assembly moved in during 1925, followed by various administrative offices including that of the Administrative- General. As was the case during Germany s colonial rule the building became the seat of central government throughout South Africa s subsequent administration in Namibia. Prior to independence the last occupant was the Transitional Government of National Unity. Although lawmakers using the parliament chamber have changed as much over the years as the political direction being pursued there, one thing has remained: The building is still being referred to as Tintenpalast (German for Ink Palace ) a term created shortly after its completion. The name was coined by people assuming a lot of ink was being used in the administrative complex by officials and clerks being employed there. Just beneath the steps leading up to the main entrance of the building lays the parliament garden stretching between the Tintenpalast and the famous Lutheran church known as Christuskirche. The small park, which is a popular attraction for Windhoek residents and tourists alike, was developed during South African rule in 1931 with the assistance of the prison services and completed in Rather recently three statues were erected at the steps separating the garden from the parliament building. The sculptures depict Chief Hosea Kutako, Reverend Theofilus Hamutumbangela and Captain Hendrik Witbooi, who all played an important part in Namibia s struggle for independence. Being situated in close proximity to the old German fort called Alte Feste and the Equestrian Statue depicting a mounted soldier of the German Schutztruppe and occupying a similarly commanding position as the nearby Christuskirche, the parliament building forms part of the historical center of Windhoek. Except for a few renovations in 1985 during which the original architecture was retained, the building remains in its original state. As with the Alte Feste which endured as a symbol of imperial oppression and now ironically houses the National Museum dedicated mostly to Namibia s struggle for freedom, the Tintenpalast is in some respect more than a historical building. The fact that it wasn t altered or demolished and still houses the legislature of Namibia demonstrates that the country has made piece with its history and has come far on the road of national reconciliation. In that sense it is perhaps fitting that the Tintenpalast, being a symbol of foreign domination during Namibia s colonial past now serves as the venue where freely elected parliamentarians of an independent nation shape the destiny of the country. 12 Reich und schön für 24 Stunden Von Wiebke Schmidt Wessen Wunsch ist es nicht, nur einen Tag zu den Schönen und Reichen dieser Welt zu zählen? Sich in einer traumhaften Umgebung verwöhnen zu lassen und sich um nichts Gedanken machen zu müssen? Dass mir dies als Normalsterblicher einmal passieren würde, hätte ich im Traum nicht gedacht und doch wurde ich im März eingeladen, einen Tag incl. Übernachtung auf der Wellnessfarm Gocheganas zu verbringen. Gocheganas, das zirka 40 Kilometer außerhalb von Windhoek in Richtung Rehoboth liegt, wurde - statt der üblichen 40 Minuten Fahrzeit mit dem Auto - innerhalb kürzester Zeit erreicht, denn ganz VIP-mäßig entstieg ich dem Hubschrauber, einem Robinson, auch wenn meine Frisur nicht so toll aussah, wie normalerweise bei Angelina Joylie oder ihren Artgenossen. Neben dem Landeplatz war eine Tafel aufgebaut, an der Fruchtcocktails, Obstschaschlik zur Begrüßung angeboten wurde. So ein mehrminütiger Flug macht aber auch hungrig. Nachdem alle weiteren Gäste eingeflogen waren, wurden wir und unser Gepäck eingeladen. Wir mussten nicht etwa unsere staubigen Täschchen selbst tragen, nein, sie wurden, mit einem freundlichen Lächeln, zu unseren Bungalows gebracht. Das Mittagessen, das uns im Restaurant erwartete, war vorzüglich. Allein der Gedanke daran, lässt mir Wochen später das Wasser im Mund zusammenlaufen: hauchdünn geschnittenes Gapacho vom Wild, mit Papayawürfeln und einem leichten Balsamicodressing. Das viele Besteck und die vielen Gläser brachte uns auch nicht weiter durcheinander, Hauptsache das Wasser war frisch, der Wein kühl und die Häppchen passten auf die Gabel. Leichter Stress ließ sich vernehmen, denn zur Einladung gehörte auch eine Wellnessbehandlung. Man konnte zwischen verschiedenen Massagen sowie Mani-, bzw. Pediküre wählen. Was für eine Dekadenz, sich darüber den Kopf zerbrechen zu müssen. Die Anwendung wurde gleich nach der Mahlzeit in dem Wellness Village vorgenommen, dass in kleinen Bungalows, unterhalb des Restaurants, untergebracht ist. Wie soll man nun die Empfindung Wohlgefühl steigern? Man liegt in einem wohlig temperierten Raum mit leiser angenehmer Musik, während warme trockene Hände den Rücken und Nacken kneten und so die Verspannungen vertreiben. Bis zum Gamedrive blieben noch zwei Stunden - nun musste man sich entscheiden, ob man diese Zeit in seinem Luxusbungalow mit der stilvollen Einrichtung und der Veranda, die eine traumhafte Kulisse bildet verbringt, oder ob man lieber den Swimmingpool mit seinem wohltemperiertem Wasser nutzt, flauschige Bademäntel sind verfügbar, desgleichen stehen Obst und kühle Obstsäfte bereit, denn schließlich soll es ja an nichts fehlen. Der Pool ist so angelegt, dass man meint, in die Landschaft raus schwimmen zu können. Natürlich gibt es noch einen Außenpool, doch drinnen hat man das Gefühl, in einem maurischen Bad zu sein. Auch wenn ich keine Ahnung habe, wie ein solches Bad auszusehen hat, so stelle ich es mir doch so vor. Die Abfahrt zur Wildbeobachtung ist auf den späten Nachmittag angesetzt. In einem speziell dafür umgebauten Landrover geht es kreuz und quer über die Farm. Und das Wild zeigt sich von seiner besten Seite, indem es sich einfach zeigt. Zebras, Kudus, Gnus, Giraffen, Wasserböcke und einige Nashörner laufen uns direkt vor die Linse. Kurz bevor die Sonne untergeht wird Halt gemacht. Wieder wird eine Tafel aufgebaut und die Wahl an Getränken für den anschließenden Sundowner lässt abermals keinen Wunsch offen. 13 Prophylaxe-Getränk Gintonic, alles ist gut gegen den Durst und gut, um sich einfach großartig zu fühlen. Dies ist doch genau das Afrika, von dem wir immer träumen, mit einem kühlen Getränk in einer atemberaubenden Landschaft stehen, mildes Abendlicht lässt die Gegend mit ihren sanften Hügeln und dem frischen Grün der letzten Regenzeit weich erscheinen. Die Luft ist erfüllt von dem würzigen Duft bestimmter Gräser und unter dem Kameldorn, der etwas abseits von uns steht, könnten sich Karen Blixen und Denys Fich Hatton aus jenseits von Afrika hin und wieder getroffen haben. Naja, das dumpfe Löwengebrüll dazu fehlt vielleicht, aber das ist auch ganz gut so. Zurück zur Lodge erwartet uns erneut eine Überraschung: Hinter der Bar waren unter einem überdachten Platz, der mit dünnen Ästen wie ein Kraal umgeben ist, Tische und Stühle aufgestellt. Die Szenerie wurde von dezent angebrachten Leuchten erhellt, ebenso sorgten Dolams, die typischen Petroleumlampen, für Licht. Neben einer unendlichen Zahl von verschiedenen Salaten und Gemüse bereitete man Buschmannfondue für uns zu. An langen metallenen Spießen steckten verschiedene Fleischsorten. Diese wurden im siedenden Öl, das sich in großen gusseisernen Töpfen, den Potjies, befand gegart. Ein vollkommener Abend eines perfekten Tages. Es war fast zu schade, um die Nacht mit Schlafen zu verbringen, vielmehr wollte ich den wundervollen Raum mit der herrlichen Aussicht auf die Auasberge genießen. Doch dies holte ich am frühen Morgen nach eine Dusche, die auf der Veranda angebracht ist, machte mich wach, der flauschige Morgenmantel wärmte mich, denn es war relativ frisch. Dann, mit einer Tasse dampfenden Kaffees nahm ich die Landschaft, in mich auf. Der Himmel hatte sein warmes Rot bereits verloren und die Berge am Horizont nahmen immer mehr Kontur an. Ein neuer Tag kann beginnen. n Wir fahren ins Tal der Engel ( Valley of Angels ), etwa 20 km nördlich von Windhoek, um einen Schutzengel für verletzte, erkrankte oder verwaiste Tiere zu besuchen. Der Engel heißt Liz Komen und ist die Leiterin von NARREC. Mit Hilfe von 2-3 Mitarbeitern kümmert sich die ausgebildete Tierkrankenschwester um hilflose Tiere, vorwiegend Vögel, um diese wieder lebensfähig und gesund in die Freiheit entlassen zu können. NARREC ist eine 1988 gegründete, privat geführte, gemeinnützige Organisation. Lediglich unterstützt vom Umwelt Ministerium mit etwa N$ jährlich (derzeit ca. Euro 4300), ist NARREC auf private Spenden und Sponsoren angewiesen. So spendet Meatco, ein in Windhoek ansässiger Schlachtereibetrieb, beispielsweise Fleisch zur Verpflegung der Patienten. Somit sind die Grundvoraussetzungen zum Bestehen und Erhalt von NARREC derzeit gegeben. Um eine bestmögliche Betreuung insbesondere der Vögel zu erreichen, sind jedoch weitaus größere Investitionen von Nöten. Ein großes Ziel ist der Bau einer Freifluganlage, um die geschwächten Tiere auf ein Leben in Freiheit vorzubereiten. NARREC sieht seine Aufgabe aber ebenso im Bereich der Umwelterziehung und Verbreitung von Informationen über die einheimische Fauna. Zu diesem Zwecke werden immer wieder Broschüren und Informationsmaterial erstellt. Diese werden Schulen, Ministerien, Studenten und allen Interessierten zur Verfügung gestellt. Gerne bietet Frau Komen nach vorheriger Absprache geführte Rundgänge auf dem weitläufigen Gelände an. Adler, Eulen, Falken und eine Vielzahl andere Vogelarten sind hier dauerhaft in Volièren zu bestaunen. Neben der Tierpflegestation bietet NAR- REC ein Informationszentum mit angeschlossener Bibliothek sowie einen Selbstversorger- Campingplatz für Besucher, die eine längere Zeit in diesem interessanten Umfeld verbringen möchten. Einen zusätzlichen Anreiz für einen Besuch im Tal der Engel dürften für viele die alternativen Technologien sein, die bei NARREC zur Anwendung kommen, wie zum Beispiel die aus gestampften Lehm erstellten Gebäude, die Nutzung der Sonnenenergie und die Rückgewinnung von Regenwasser. 16 Regen in Namibia die neue Regen-CD/DVD der Allgemeinen Zeitung Wieder einmal hat Namibia eine außergewöhnlich gute Regenzeit hinter sich. Das Land hat sich von einer ungewöhnlichen Seite gezeigt: Starke Regenfälle, blühende Wüsten und fließende Riviere bestimmten das Bild, aber auch Hochwasser und Überflutung waren die Folgen. Viele AZ-Leser sind dem Aufruf der Allgemeinen Zeitung gefolgt und haben hunderte der schönsten Regenbilder eingesendet, die zum Teil in verschiedenen AZ-Ausgaben bzw. im Internet unter veröffentlicht wurden. Da aus Platzgründen nicht alle Regenbilder abgedruckt werden konnten, werden diese jetzt auf CD und DVD zugänglich gemacht. Partner der AZ war dabei in bewährter Weise die Firma Buschkino Namibia, die hervorragende Arbeit geleistet hat. Auf der Regen-CD können rund 1000 Fotos einzeln angesehen und auch heruntergeladen werden, dazu gibt s eine Legende mit kurzen Erklärungen. Die Regen-DVD indes zeigt ausgewählte Fotos als Filmsequenzen im chronologischen Ablauf der vergangenen Regenzeit. Mit passender Musik untermalt sorgt diese DVD 40 Minuten lang für beste Unterhaltung und eindrucksvolle Erinnerungen an die Regenzeit. Beide Scheiben gibt s als Paket unter dem Titel Regen in Namibia. Das Produkt ist für 120 Namibia-Dollar in der AZ-Redaktion in Windhoek und Swakopmund sowie am Stand der AZ auf der Namibia Tourism Expo 2009 erhältlich.
