Fakultät für Physik WS 2014/15 Prof. Milena Grifoni, Prof. Jascha Repp Übungen zu Integrierter Kurs II - Festkörper und Statistische Physik Blatt 10 ( ) Übungsleiter: Prof. Jascha Repp (1.1.24, phone 4201) Dr. Magdalena Margańska- Lyżniak (3.1.22, phone 2042) (experiment) (theory) Part I: Theory 1. Density of states for tight-binding models Consider the following tight-binding Hamiltonian representing the valence electrons of an infinite chain of atoms with the lattice constant a: { } Ĥ = lim N sites t N sites ( i i i + 1 i ) i=1 where for simplicity the spin is neglected and we assume periodic boundary conditions. (a) Diagonalize the Hamiltonian., (b) Prove that the density of states for the system reads (in the limit N sites ) ρ(e) = 1 π 1 4t 2 E 2 for E < 2t and vanishes elsewhere. Hint: start from the definition of the density of states, ρ(e) = 1 δ(e E α ), N tot where N tot is the total number of states for the system and α is labelling the eigenstates of the system with eigenvalue E α. The following relation involving the Dirac delta can be useful: δ(f(x)) = i where the points x i are the zeroes of f(x). α 1 f (x i ) δ(x x i), (c) What is the density of states for a 1-dimensional free electron gas? What does it have in common with the result calculated in (b)? (d) Now consider the generalization of the tight-binding model of an infinite chain to a square (2D) and a cubic (3D) lattice. What are the dispersion relations in these two cases?
(e) Prove that the density of states can be reduced to the generic form ρ d (E) = 1 π where J 0 (x) is a Bessel function defined as J 0 (x) = 1 π 0 π and d is the dimensionality, d = 1, 2, 3. Hint: the following relations may be useful 0 δ(x) = 1 2π dλ cos(λe) J d 0 (2tλ), dy exp( ix cos y) dy e ixy, J 0 ( x) = J 0 (x) = J 0 (x). (f) Prove that the density of states for the 1-dimensional tight-binding model obtained in (e) coincides with that obtained in (b). 2. Trigonal lattice in tight-binding approximation Consider a monoatomic trigonal lattice as shown in the figure. In the following we shall use the tight-binding approximation with one orbital per site, with the hopping limited to the nearest neighbours. The hopping prameter is t, the nearest-neighbour distance a, and the on-site energies ε 0 = 0. a 1 a 2 (a) What are the coordinates of the lattice generators in real space? Find the lattice generators in the reciprocal space and construct the first Brillouin zone. What are the coordinates of the vertices of the first Brillouin zone? (b) The single-particle Hamiltonian in the Wannier basis has the form ĥ = t R, R R R, t > 0. Write this Hamiltonian in the Bloch basis. Find the dispersion ε( k). Hint: make use of the relation 1 { exp i( N k k ) } = δ k k, cell where the sum is intended over the Bravais lattice and k and k belong to the reciprocal lattice. Integrierter Kurs II Übungsblatt 10 Seite 2 von 5
(c) Calculate the position in the reciprocal space of the top and the bottom of the band. What are the corresponding energies? (d) The system is at half-filling. Find the Fermi surface of the infinite system (periodic boundary conditions apply). (Hint: assume that the Fermi surface is circular and put a restriction on its area.) (e) Complete the figure below Draw the lattice generators, the first Brillouin zone and (approximately) the Fermi surface. band top ε band bottom 3. Electronic structure of non-interacting graphene (in class) A trigonal Bravais lattice with diatomic unit cell forms a honeycomb lattice known from many planar materials, such as graphene or boron nitride BN. In the case of graphene the orbitals are the p z carbon orbitals. The two atoms A and B are both carbon atoms. In the plot below a c is the nearest-neighbour bond length. A B τ a 1 a 2 a c (a) Find the reciprocal lattice and construct the first Brillouin zone. Integrierter Kurs II Übungsblatt 10 Seite 3 von 5
(b) Write the Hamiltonian in the basis of the extended states 1 φa k = Ncell 1 φb k = Ncell e i k e i k p z, R + τ p z, R τ, where N cell is the number of the unit cells of the crystal and of the p z orbital localized at the position S. p z, S is the state (c) The generic extended states of the graphene sheet have the form: ψ = k c A k φ A k + c B k φ B k, where c A k and c B k are complex numbers. Find the eigenstates of the system and the corresponding eigenvalues. How many bands do you find? What are the energy-wavevector relations? Hint: You will need to solve a 2 2 matrix eigenvalue problem - the time-independent Schrödinger equation written in the basis of extended states. (d) Show that the Fermi energy is equal to zero by verifying that this gives the correct electron density. Find the set of k points for which ɛ( k) = 0. Show that these correspond to the corners of the first Brillouin zone. (e) Plot the complete dispersion relation of graphene. Part II: Experiment 1.
