Büro Elisabethstr München T 0 89 / F 0 89 / info@sev-bayern.de About the competition The architectural award for building-integrated granted by Bayern e. V. (the Bavarian association for the promotion of solar energy, in German abbreviated as SeV) aims at promoting excellence in planning and designing of building-integrated solar power systems. This award makes accessible the exemplary solutions in qualitatively sophisticated architecture to the greater public. The number of participants and the quality of the projects taking part in the competition, which the SeV has now held for the sixth time since the year 2000, demonstrates the relevance of the topic that, as a result of the economic problems facing the solar power industry, is in danger of becoming somewhat neglected in building projects. There were 151 submissions from 20 countries, which represents an increase of more than 60 per cent compared with projects that met the competition criteria were approved for assessment. A closer inspection of the submissions shows that almost half ( 47 per cent) are from Germany and more than 2/3 of the buildings come from German speaking countries. Encouraging is the growing response from other European countries, particularly France and Italy, which shows that building-integrated is now being more widely deployed internationally. Of the 137 approved projects, 17 entries were submitted for the Student Work Award, which meant that a total of 120 projects were evaluated in the Architecture Award for Building-Integrated Solar Technology competition process. Within these projects, housing construction continues to make up the largest share with more than 35 per cent, whereby almost three-quarters are detached and semi-detached homes; however, there was also a significant increase in projects in the non-residential construction sector relative to 2011 Architectural Award Building-Integrated Solar Technik Results of the prize jury meeting on Sept. 19 th, 1

The other building types are largely distributed between industrial/commercial (15 per cent), administration (11 per cent) and municipal buildings (10 per cent), as well as schools/kindergarten (8 per cent). The majority of submissions are new-build schemes, even if the refurbishment examples show that it is also possible to successfully integrate into existing roofs and facades. In the first round, all the projects were closely examined by the jury members on an individual basis before being discussed together. Based on the objectives of the competition, with the overarching evaluation criteria based on architectural aspects above all the holistic conception and the degree of innovation (energy and construction), a detailed assessment of the remaining 54 projects was conducted in the second round. From these schemes, the jury selected 13 projects for the shortlist (Scheme 001, Scheme 018, Scheme 049, Scheme 054, Scheme 064, Scheme 089, Scheme 100, Scheme 115, Scheme 124, Scheme 137, Scheme 144, Scheme 145, Scheme 151). Following a detailed assessment of the innovation potential and the exemplary character of the solutions for the respective construction tasks, the remaining schemes were narrowed down for the main prize (Scheme 001, Scheme 018, Scheme 061, Scheme 064, Scheme 100, Scheme 115, Scheme 137). These projects offer an excellent response to the requirements of the competition brief. 3 Architectural Award Building-Integrated Solar Technology ( EUR) Scheme 115: Spreitenbach (CH), Umweltarena (2012) Architects: René Schmid Architekten, Zurich To anchor the theme of building integrated to a much greater extent in the built environment, new creative solutions are required in combination with progressive energy concepts that act as exemplary multipliers for architects and developers alike. Both are reflected in the project for the Umweltarena (Environmental Arena) in Spreitenbach. The architects have picked up on current trends in the design for the roof and have conceived a prism-like shape with diverse sloping and exposed faces. The southeast/northwest-oriented building also succeeds in effectively activating the north-facing PV cells, enabling the roughly 5,400 square metres of monocrystalline glass-glass modules to achieve a total installed output of 750 kw. The energy yield is more than double the building s own energy requirements, and is equivalent to the annual energy yield of 120 households. The architects refer to a futuristic solar dress, whose structural and formal implementation provides an equally convincing solution when viewed both from a distance and close up. This demonstrates that geometrically complex designs can also be realised elegantly with standard photovoltaic technology. The building concept, which as an exhibition and event forum among others addresses the themes of renewable energy, building and modernisation and energy and mobility, also succeeds in effectively conveying integrated to a wider public. 4 Special recognition Awards Building-Integrated Solar Technology (2.000 EUR) Scheme 001: Munich, Carport roof for the municipal waste disposal services (2011) Architects: Ackermann und Partner Architekten BDA, Munich Canopies, particularly in the transport and commercial building sector, provide an opportunity for large-scale solar power systems. The architects and engineers were breaking new ground with their design for the carport roof for Munich s Municipal Waste Disposal Services (AWM). With the new interpretation of the original membrane roof, pneumatically pre-stressed, multilayer ETFE cushions are combined with flexible thin-film PV modules. This results in a light, semi-transparent roof, whose PV installation area shades about 40% of the carport level but nevertheless provides sufficient daylight. In conjunction with the extremely filigree support structure, a pilot project has been created that is particularly important for the commercial sector and building integrated solar technology. 5 Special recognition Awards Building-Integrated Solar Technology (2.000 EUR) Scheme 064: Paris, Halle Pajol (2013) Architects: Jourda Architectes, Paris The approach of using large-scale canopies that are detached from the building itself can now be found in various versions in the form of solar roofs. When renovating a former warehouse in Paris which was originally earmarked for demolition, the architects used the existing steel structure as weather protection for a new four-storey timber building below it and as an energy roof for a district with offices, shops, youth hostel and library. The south-facing surfaces of the saw-tooth roof are partly covered with photovoltaic modules and solar collectors so that a good use of daylight is guaranteed in the free areas. Although no new structural approach is adopted here, it succeeds in achieving a model neighbourhood development with a sustainable structural and energy concept. 6 Special recognition Awards Building-Integrated Solar Technology (2.000 EUR) Arbeit 100: Lausanne, SwissTech Convention Centre (2012) Architects: Richter Dahl Rocha & Associés Architectes, Lausanne The SwissTech Convention Centre on the EPFL campus is dominated by a crystalline, projecting metal roof. A coloured, shimmering glass facade is visible beneath this canopy. This project is the first time that the design possibilities offered by Grätzel cells have been used on such a large scale anywhere in the world. With large glass facades, the design parameters are often reduced, which can lead to monotonous, smooth reflective surfaces. The architects Richter Dahl Rocha have adopted a different approach with the SwissTech Convention Centre. In the west facade, dye-sensitized solar cells in various yellow, green and red hues are arranged in storey-high narrow strips across 300 square metres in front of the glass facade. These provide not only solar shading but also produce appealing lighting effects in the foyer. With its light, filigree structure, this cell technology opens up new design possibilities, even if its efficiency level is still considerably below that of silicon cells. 7 Special recognition Awards Building-Integrated Solar Technology (2.000 EUR) Scheme 137: Glattfelden (CH), Single-family home (2013) Architects: Mirlo Urbano Architekten, Zurich The Glattfelden single-family home is a self-confident new-build scheme that is distinguished by its clearly structured timber facade and the energy roof, which is folded slightly inwards. Its roof form is reminiscent of the local saddle roofs and uses the different slopes to optimise the exposure of the PV modules and solar collectors. Using a standard mounting system, the architects have succeeded in combining the solar thermal and photovoltaic systems along with two skylights in an extremely elegant manner. Stainless steel solar absorbers and glass covers are matched in terms of their construction heights and the shingled arrangement also provides a slightly structured surface. In this coherent approach, only the peripheral edge made of galvanized steel flashing seems somewhat too contrasting in appearance. Architekt HBK/SIA, Heiden (CH) Heritage and local conservationists still often consider solar thermal and photovoltaic systems to be disruptive elements in the rural context. The fact that this does not have to be the case is shown by the exterior renovation of the Catholic Church in Heiden, which was built in This offered an opportunity to provide a contemporary addition to an important work by the architect Walter Moser. In consultation with the monument conservation authorities, a full-scale PV roof with frameless mono-crystalline modules was successfully achieved in spite of the complex geometric roof shape. The roof surface, which is slightly inclined eastwards, is divided into three sub-areas. Not least the careful detailing of the copper sheet flashing, leads to a combination of a culture monument with in an aesthetically harmonious manner. 9 Special Student Projects Award Gebäudeintegrierte Solartechnik (2.000 EUR) Scheme 102: Project Rooftop/Solar Decathlon Europe Architects: Team Rooftop, Berlin/UdK Berlin & TU Berlin At this year s Solar Decathlon Europe in Versailles, several teams were represented with projects that involve adding additional storeys to buildings and which thus address the current need to create greater density in cities. The Rooftop project from students at Berlin s University of the Arts and the Technical University consists of a single-story timber structure with a floor area of 55 square metres and, as a special feature, folding doors in the facade that also lift upwards. Two CIGS thin-film modules are integrated in the upper half of the respective timber door elements, which in summer provide solar shading and simultaneously expand the energy roof area consisting of CIGS modules. In winter the system provides additional thermal protection. This multifunctional, adaptive facade also succeeds in combining solar energy technology and timber construction in a coherent manner.
