NEWSLETTER TO ALL PIFE MEMBERS PIFE BECAME 25 YEARS OLD by Evaldas Karmaza Only for a few years I am a member of PIfE, only a good year I am part of the board in PIfE. Behind me is something hidden. Something that I still do not fully understand nor know. And this is twenty five years of history of PIfE. When I got the proposal to apply for the chairman position, I also got strange encouragement - it will take not one year to get to know what PIfE is. From others who were at the roots of organization birth, I got other encouragement - just in a very calm manner to read the statute slowly and try to feel what was its initial idea. Little discoveries. Both wishes I just started implementing - taking years to understand what PIfE is, reading again in different manner the primary document. And I started doing little discoveries. Let me share it with you: There are people who gave efforts and power for PIfE to grow. And there are some among them who already left their place for others to continue. So PIfE is not one generation venture anymore. It happened that 25 year ago Europe lived in uncertainty of what is going to happen. Conflicts could end at any direction. When political reviewers in the late eighties were asked to guess possible Europe s further development, only 40 percent of guesses were in the right direction. And that was the period when PIfE was established. With no big support from surrounding professional environment, with no clear Europe s path, but with a pretty clear vision for organization - to make the common European house habitable and to fill it with life. I also made a discovery, that psychodrama was brought by PIfE people to the countries like Poland, Hungary, Romania, Ukraine, Lithuania, Belarus. These are the countries with a hard history in the 20th
NEWSLETTER TO ALL PIFE MEMBERS century. History, that taught people to be careful. And in these circumstances PIfE people started right the opposite - to teach people to trust the group and trust the action. Isn t it brave? Isn t it reckless? And it happened. Belarus is still a little bit like remaining fortress with very vell working security services. But PIfE made as well two training groups there already, where many international network organizations cannot find a way to work in there. And PIfE is continueing the trainings. Invisible people. This is also a discovery for me, that PIfE kept going - not only to vision and voluntary work of psychodramatists and their students, but also a very big part of its power is built on. a little bit invisible people. So who are these persons? They are close relatives of PIfE members. They are husbands and wives, sons and daughters, and others who helped to make daily PIfE events happen. They did protocols, bought food, carried guests with their cars, let them into their houses for sleep, helped to print documents, posted it online, translated messages and articles. They are the enormous power of PIfE for all these 25 years. And in the peaceful surrounding of Seehaus castle in Germany there was a nice gathering at the beginning of September Also lots of it organized by invisible people. And this gathering was the symbolic celebration of PIfE becoming 25 years old already. And here we saw, what actually PIfE was and is. When you put all congress programs from all the years on the table at the same time, then you see how much is already done. And here again, Europe is again in uncertain times. In the PIfE world are also some disagreements and tensions. But now I can say, that PIfE will survive. Just because it is already 25 years old and knows what it is to pass through changing times. So, maybe strange, maybe drastic, but it is about time to say: Long live the PIfE!
NEWSLETTER TO ALL PIFE MEMBERS THE YEAR OF 2014 by Evaldas Karmaza The year of 2014 was a very special year for PIfE. It was a historical anniversary - 25 years of work, trainings, groups, seminars and conferences in a number of countries. PIfE started its journey in Amsterdam in a very special time , even though the situation was not very comfortable and the support not high. Now it met the year of 2014, which in a way also is in a similar situation - turbulent times in Europe, our organization also moving with uncertainties, again seeking its place in Europe. As if the circle had been closed. At the beginning of autumn, thanks to Gerd s and Ildikó s initiative and Julia s and Gerda s organization, there was a cosy memory meeting in Seehaus (a wonderful castle in between Würzburg and Nuremberg) where some of first generation PIfE psychodramatists gathered for a festive meeting to commemorate the large step of PIfE - 25 years. An interesting conclusion was made during a good day discussion - PIfE accomplished its mission. And for that we have to thank a number of trainers, organizers and students. And not to forget their family members and close friends who also were involved into PIfE life. Many things happened during these 25 years... The year of 2014 was also special for international cooperation. In September of 2014 in Berlin there was a special conference The Child in the Society. Quite unusual, this event was organized jointly by three organizations: PIfE, Moreno Institut Stuttgart and Szenen-Institut für Psychodrama. Knowing how sometimes competitive psychodramatists can be, this event conveyed a completely different message, showing how cooperative they may be. Almost two hundred participants. Even though it turned out not to be a financial success, professionally it was a big step towards child psychodrama development. And we have to keep in mind, that most participants were young specialists from several countries, what makes it a good investment in psychodrama development. In this year of 2014, the PIfE Executive board (consisting of chairman, secretary and treasurer) had two live meetings. Thanks to Fred s and Judith s hosting, these meetings with low costs were very cosy and effective. Actually it was an executive board birth - three of us tried cooperation, planning, reviewing etc. During the first meeting we passed only few issues of planned topics. Almost every question lead to discussion. The second meeting which took place in September we already approached more strategically, since we involved more other board members into action. But lots of topics we dealt with in electronic meetings that were organized through skype. In the year of 2014 the executive board had 17 skype meetings in total. A lot, but as well little, as there are still so many issues unresolved. But let s call it a good working start.
NEWSLETTER TO ALL PIFE MEMBERS The PIfE executive board started a new way of keeping track - we started using electronic means to keep documents, agreements, and questionnaires in one place. Thanks to our google platform it is much easier to navigate through the growing number of documents. Now there are documents sorted out for board members, soon it will be issued for every member of PIfE. The bigger challenge for us was to find a way to manage our internet site. Knowing how important it is to have good public face we approached to And the beginning was a defeat, since the site crashed. For a few weeks it lost its original face, then it was restored. Luckily (or it only seems to us) it went unnoticed by our members. But unluckily on the other hand - it means, the site remains unused, without attention. Still we have to admit - our goal to have an attractive, updated and visited site has not been reached yet. For us as administrators we want to have it easily mastered (we still buy services from others to update the site which is build on Joomla structure, not very well accessible to us). But we did one step - created a temporary neighbor - Please visit it for the most current information about PIfE life. The year 2014 included also some international events, in which PIfE participated. FEPTO, where PIfE is a member, had a fruitful meeting in Obidos in March This time PIfE was represented by me, the organizations chairman. Some of the impressions were shared among the members after the meeting. In Riga (Latvia) the Baltic Moreno days took place in August, where PIfE also was represented and visible thanks to several PIfE members. In October Ukrainian colleagues organized a Psychodrama Festival. E. Karmaza as PIfE representative had the honour to lead the sociodrama during the opening phase of the weekend event. PIfE has lost some of its personal members. This may be a signal that changes should be done in our organization. Part of our members are also dilatory in paying their membership fees. We tried to do a questionnaire for all members this year. It also showed the passive side of PIfE, since less than a quarter responded. What is it - distrust, loss of interest, response to our PIfE work quality? On the other hand there are always people who react and act, no matter how PIfE is doing at the moment. They show their support and trust both verbally and indirectly. That makes us go, that will make us grow. It is also worth mentioning that during the year of 2014 we have accepted three new organizational members (Belarus, Hungary and Russia). The year of 2015 will be a decisive year. At the end of May the PIfE board will gather for developing a PIfE future strategy. In Romania we will have our next PIfE conference, which will also be related with organization development. Even the name of the conference will be Options - encountering future. So what future is awaiting us in 2015?
NEWSLETTER TO ALL PIFE MEMBERS NEWS FROM THE TREASURER Dear members of PIfE, The first year of our New Board after our election in Kiev has passed, with activities of new organization, developing new methods of interacting and working of the Board. In the 25 th year of the existence of PIfE we tried to trigger a process of new orientation of our organisation - its values, aims, terms of common working. This is still in progress, we are working on it and we shall present it on our next conference in Cluj next year. Today, in my role as the treasurer I want you to inform you about the actual financial situation of our institute. In June 2013 and in February 2014 we finished two projects financed by the German Government and by a German NGO in Belarus. These projects enabled us to spread psychodrama education and psychodrama in the social sphere in Belarus. Financially the project run by the aid of the German Government could be finish positively without any loss, whereas the second one has not yet been settled financially. I am in good hope to finish it as well without loss, even with some gain. However, together with two other Psychodrama-Institutes in Germany we organized an International Children s conference on Psychodrama in September in Berlin, visited by a- bout 180 participants of different European countries. So it was a real success - but unfortunately the payment of the participants didn t cover the real costs, so that we had to cope with a deficit of more than Euro to be paid divided into three by the organizing institutes. So of course, this is a loss, but an investment as well in the spread of psychodrama - especially for the benefit of the children in Europe. For the next year we are planning together with our Rumanian our conference in Cluj, in preparation of which we shall have a process of organizational consulting. As well, we shall be trying to develop new projects in Belarus and in other countries by the financial support of governmental and NGO organisations. If you have some ideas and interests, please let me know. To do our work, especially, to do it properly, we are still in need of paid membership - membership fees paid in time. Most of you do so, so first of all I want to say many and heartily thanks to all of you who have paid their membership fees for the current year - there are only about 15 persons left. I will ask them - you - for the last time this year. Furthermore there are some members left who haven t paid yet for I will kindly ask them as well. It is, as you may imagine not a very big pleasure for the treasurer to remind, to urge our members to pay their membership fee without which we cannot work. So we have made a decision in our last Board meeting how to handle the problem with not paying members. We decided that those who won t pay their membership fee for 2013 by the end of this year, won t be members of PIfE any more - their names will be taken from the members list. Those, who by the end of this year won t have paid for 2014 will become frozen members which means, that they shall have to pay the full fee for the conference at Cluj, won t have a voting option and lose their status as PIfE trainers
NEWSLETTER TO ALL PIFE MEMBERS In case they are approved as such. I think this is something easily to be avoided. To remember the different fees you have to pay according to your country you find here once more the actual table of membership fee: France, Germany, Greece, Israel, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland 160,00 Hungary, Lithuania, Poland, Russia 45,00 Romania 35,00 Belarus, Ukraine 30,00 As well I add the SEPA account number of our institute: Psychodramainstitut für Europa e.v., Evangelische Kreditgenossenschaft Kassel, IBAN: DE BIC: GENODEF1K1. I thank you very much for your help and wish you and all of us the very best for the new year to come. Fred Dorn
NEWSLETTER TO ALL PIFE MEMBERS PIFE AND FEPTO DIFFERENT MISSIONS, SIMILAR CHALLENGES by Eduardo Verdú, Vice President of PIfE and Co-President of FEPTO Psychodrama in Europe has spread widely since its early days. In Europe alone we have thousands of trained psychodramatists though not all of them are active. Some countries started educating psychodramatists early in the history of psychodrama while others have a very young history of psychodrama. Some countries have had their heyday and are now struggling to keep up the numbers of students in their institutes while others are experiencing an increasing number of students. A tendency is that the Western countries belong to the first category while the Eastern countries belong to the latter. This is normal cyclicality. However, if it is not addressed, the damage and time it will take to build up a flourishing psychodrama movement in the different countries can be a very painful experience and a long process for us who love our method. This is something that needs to be addressed by the whole community and not only by the countries suffering of lack of students. As mentioned, no doubt this is cyclicality. In Europe we have several organisations but two major are FEPTO (Federation of European and Mediterranean Training Organisations) and PIfE What are their major tasks and are there any similarities between them or only differences? Pife was established in 1989 with the aim of spreading psychodrama to former Soviet republics and Eastern European countries. The philosophy was to train psychodramatists in these countries in order to help them to establish their own institutes in their respective countries and start training themselves. FEPTO was established in 1993 in Stockholm, Sweden and their aim was and is to organize psychodrama training organisations and associations in order to try and come together, join forces and establish common training standards in Europe. Further on the idea was to develop psychodrama, exchange pedagogical approaches and methodological understandings. This has expanded with a strong focus on topics like ethics and research. PIfE did focus on research but this focus has faded some years ago. So a general description is that PIfE was started to train and spread psychodrama in Eastern Europe while FEPTO was established to unite the institutes of Europe and focus on training standards. This makes some interesting divisions between the two organisations. While PIfE has basically only individual members mostly from the East (156) and just a handful institutional members, FEPTO has except the founding members from 1993, only training institutes and organisations as members. Looking back at my first time in FEPTO in Seville in 1998, when only a handful institutes were a member and the annual meeting had 37 delegates, the growth of FEPTO is tremendous. Today, Europe has got many more countries and FEPTO have approx. 80 member institutes from 27 countries. Their annual meetings take place in a different European city every year and count more than a 100 delegates, who gather to discuss different topics and exchange experiences. It is not necessary to say that it has become a huge organisation with many different needs and challenges. Though both organisations have different missions, they are at the same time challenged by the changes we are facing. Most Eastern countries that PIfE focused on will soon be on their own feet and won t
NEWSLETTER TO ALL PIFE MEMBERS need PIfE for the original purpose anymore. FEPTO is getting an increasing numbers of member institutes but their challenge is that many of the institutes are not succeeding in recruiting new students. In 2015 PIfE will hold their conference in Cluj, Romania in September and FEPTO will have their annual meeting in Bonn, Germany in May. Both events will be deeply affected by the fact that they are strongly challenged. PIfE needs to look into their identity for their future. Who are we now and who do we want to be in the future in order to survive? What will be our purpose in the future? Europe has no individual membership organisation. Is the creation of a PIfE focusing on the needs of the psychodramatists in all Europe our chance to survive the next decade? FEPTOs annual meeting has a very clear topic underlining the severe situation in many countries: "Promotion of Psychodrama Who Shall Survive". Who Shall Survive? This question was raised by Moreno decades ago. Today, in a world were the conflicts between nations are getting stronger and more dangerous, where nationalism seems to grow, where fear of the different religious beliefs is strongly increasing, where freedom now is more challenged in our part of the world than it has been since WW2, - today we need to overcome our relational difficulties as psychodramatists, to protect what stands as most precious for us all the freedom and equality of all human beings. The right to express ourselves - Psychodrama. Liberté, Egalité, Fraternité. The last terror attacks in Paris are a strong reminder. On January 7 th we all became Charlie. Let us never forget it. We simply cannot afford it. Its time to re-join forces again. Je suis Charlie Europe, January 7 th 2015 twitter.com/lucilleclerc
NEWSLETTER TO ALL PIFE MEMBERS HOW TO CREATE GOOD CONDITIONS FOR PIFE FUTURE? by Eva Serafin When I was asked whether I may apply to become a board member, my first reaction was: I felt honored, of cause. Second was: I need to read the statute again - is this really something I m identifying so much that I ll be going to put voluntarily work in? Reading the preamble already made me feel sure: Europe is in a state of change: the European nations are undertaking various efforts to make the common European house habitable and fill it with life. We, the psychodramatists of Europe, wish to contribute by making a section of this common house habitable, the section that concerns our work and professionalism Because of political and historical changes we will be compelled to face new challenges within the coming years and decades: our learning objectives will be: Learning to cope with heterogeneity, Learning to handle diversity and Learning to organize changing situations (.) All those people working in psychological, social and therapeutic fields, whose every day routine consists of creating a common cause, will be increasingly confronted with problems arising from this development. Doctors and therapists, teachers and lawyers, social worker and psychologists as well as artists and politicians and many other professional groups will be forced to develop their abilities to be able to deal with heterogeneity, diversity and changes in a suitable and professional way. The values, concepts and methods of psychodrama, sociometry and psychodramatic group psychotherapy will enable us to face the challenges of European integrations in our professional fields (Preamble of the PIfE statute, verbalized by the founders in 1989, actual and valid even after 25 years) Let me shortly introduce myself. I m Vice Chairwoman in PIfE elected during the general assembly in Kiew in September I live in Berlin and was trained as a psychodramatist in the late 1980s and during the 90s. My working fields are adult education, personal and organizational development, mediation, teambuilding, trainings. Starting work in the board meant for me to be confronted with requests, applications and proposals. I noticed how much work had to be done in the board, and again I want to say thank you to those who did this before. Beside the day-to-day-work I also realized an urgent need to look forward and develop further position of points. PIfE is an international Institute including an international and national network, and PIfE is a place for individual members all over Europe as well. We all have goals, needs and as an association we have been growing in a natural state. Of cause we have to review goals and agreements after a certain time and not at least we need an organizational structure that enables us to be successful.
NEWSLETTER TO ALL PIFE MEMBERS How do we cooperate with each other? Mostly, work flows easily due to practice, but sometimes there is discontentment and some unhappiness may stay longer. It may be based on an unclear structure. At least the structure doesn t help in every case to find solutions. For example, PIfE international has a national branch in Germany with appropriate name (PIfE Landesverband Deutschland). Are national branches in other countries the same as institutional members? And how shall we deal with two Institutes in one country? What exactly is meant by national branches in our statute? Should the second national Institute get the same financial support by PIfE international as the first? It s quite easy to realize, that reality developed different to the statute in some points. What does it mean to us: Should we change the statute to fit to reality or change reality to fit to the statute? Or should we better find a third way? We built a working group on this subject. It is worth to tell, that this working group changed its title several times, somehow apparently for coincident. Looking back I would say, that happened since the subject has so many different aspects while the phenomenon is commonly known: What happened at last or what might be the main point is kept in mind and influences your personal perspective on an issue. So we started with the title national branches, followed by communication within PIfE, new guidelines, changing statute, international communication, international affairs Let me summarize what we discussed in the working group: We first spoke about participation and involvement and agreed that there must be as much participation of our member Institutes and personal members as possible. We need to know the different wishes, needs and ideas. There also was a questionnaire prepared for PIfE institutional members about possible improvements in future cooperation. We are looking forward to the answers. Our task as board members is to discuss in our own group, just to find out, which aspects the subject may have and what we must prepare or keep in mind. We even need to make the elements of our organizational structure clear in defining the expressions (board international, board national, institutional members, and national branches). Which committee is supposed to have which rights and tasks? In another skype-meeting, we spoke about different proposals of how institutional cooperation may be organized. A lot of details may fit together or can be integrated. But again the structural elements had to be cleared. So I tried to translate the proposals into organizational diagrams, to show where the main differences are. That was the way to find criteria for discussing organizational proposals and for evaluation. The criteria were: Financial aspects: Where does the money came from? Which expenses are possible? Who is getting financial support? Growth/ increase: Is the structure good for PIfE growth, getting bigger and stronger? Voluntarily work: At which spots within the organization is voluntarily work necessary to stay together and produce good results for PIfE?
NEWSLETTER TO ALL PIFE MEMBERS Conflict potential - trouble spots: Is the proposed structure helpful to avoid conflicts and to solve troubles? Demarcation: We as PIfE are very special special for what? What is the difference between us and other associations? Motivation: Does the suggested structure make it easy to communicate? Does it make PIfE more attractive? Will it motivate to become a member and even an active member of PIfE? Following up on the skype-meeting was about trying to compare the criteria on PIfE to FEPTO, which also is the demarcation topic. Goal of the discussion was to gain more awareness about differences and finding answers to questions like: What is special about PIfE? What do we have or make or what is the very specialty about us that no other association provides? Is there something we can learn from FEPTO? Which aspects are typical for our PIfE identity? All items of comparing and using the criteria for the discussion are put in a so called rating matrix. In November the working group presented their thoughts, results and papers at a live board meeting. We decided to have a workshop with all members of the entire board on the whole subject in springtime. Meanwhile we may receive further Ideas, wishes, proposals about possible improvements in future cooperation: We in PIfE are many, we are skilled and we provide experiences and expertise of different countries and from many various fields of work. PIfE deserves a structure that helps us to communicate and cooperate within. The smoother we can work together and integrate our resources, knowledge and experience the more we ll be a strong psychodrama association for Europe.
NEWSLETTER TO ALL PIFE MEMBERS WHAT PIFE MEMBERS THINK OF PIFE FUTURE During the year of 2014 PIfE executive board initiated the questionnaire for organization members. 25 years were over and PIfE is in need of clear, commonly agreed new directions and ideas that could foster organization existence. This questionnaire was just a part of working on organization development. Next there will be a PIfE board strategy meeting in spring of 2015, where the answers of the members will be also used as a reference for building the PIfE future. From the Questionnaire: 1. Please name three keywords you connect to PIfE 2. If PIfE was an animal, which animal would you choose and why? 3. What for do you need PIfE? 4. What services you expect PIfE should provide? 5. What is your idea of PIfE in five years from today, what does it provide (e.g. content, service, messages)? 6. What is your idea of organizational structure of PIfE in five years? 7. Any other thoughts you want to share? Even there we have more than 100 members, we have only received answers from 13 participants in total. Although it is still way too early to conclude, what the reasons of low activity are, we invite you to find out now some few impressions what the responses and proposals for PIfE were. What kind of Animal PIfE may look like? Even this was not the first question, let us start with responses of this one. Do you see what may connect to these animals: Cow - Elephant - Turtle - Camel - Snowman Strong and slow. So what word is better first: Strong or slow? Let us be honest - yes, slowness is visible for a moment. But good news - PIfE is survivalist. So let us wish that the part strong will become more and more visible. Other symbols: Golden retriever, Taurus, Jaguar, Dolphin, or just nice Gaga.
