04-G 8100 Regions in Globalization: Africa and the Near East Gendered Perspectives on African ocieties eminar Lecturer: Dr. Nadine ieveking, Center for Area tudies Time: Monday, 11am-1pm Place: GWZ Representations of Africa carry assumptions about gender relations in African societies. Widespread stereotypes include for example images of the always joyful and heroic Mama Africa but also notions of the poor, powerless and always suffering woman. uch stereotypical representations not only affect images of the continent in public discourse but also influence academic research and policy making. In our seminar we want to question these stereotypes and the generalising assumption that women in Africa are subordinated. In order to get a differentiated view on gender relations in African societies and the ways they have been changing we will focus on various domains such as rural and urban environments, migrations, intergenerational relations, religion, politics, and social movements. The seminar will be supported by MOODLE. A reader with the compulsory reading will be available (Copyshop WDK, Grassist. 7). uggested introductory readings: Boserup, Ester (1970): Women s role in economic development, London: George Allen & Unwin Ltd. Elwert, Georg (1984): Conflicts Inside and Outside the Household: A West African Case tudy in: mith, Joan; Wallerstein, Immanuel; Evers, Hans-Dieter (eds.), Households and the World-Economy, Beverly Hills / London / New Delhi: age, Grosz-Ngate, Maria; Kokole, Omari H. (eds.) (1997): Gendered Encounters. Challenging Cultural Boundaries and ocial Hierarchies in Africa, New York / London: Routledge ources and Methods for African History and Culture eminar Lecturer: Prof. Dr. Adam Jones, Institute for African tudies Time: Monday, 3-5pm Place: GWZ Written sources play a somewhat less dominant role in historical research on sub-aharan Africa than they do for, say, Germany. Oral sources - notably oral history (for the recent past) and oral tradition - are often the only narrative sources available. In addition we can use linguistic data, material culture, onomastic material, photographs and several other kinds of source. The seminar offers an introduction to methods with which we can attempt to understand and analyse the African past, as well as looking at ethnographic methods and the problems they raise. 9

Cooperation and Conflict: The new African Peace and ecurity Architecture eminar Lecturer: Prof. Dr. Ulf Engel, Institute for African tudies Time: Wednesday, 9-11am Place: GWZ This seminar will analyse a wide range of peace and security challenges in Africa and deal with the various types and causes of conflicts, different actors in conflict and strategies of conflict resolution. The seminar will also address recent institutional and political changes: With the transformation from the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) to the African Union (AU) in 2002, Africa s continental organisation and the Regional Economic Communities (RECs) have embarked on a substantial institutional reform programme. Among others, a new security architecture is in the making comprising the Peace and ecurity Council (PC), a Continental Early Warning ystem (CEW), a Panel of the Wise, a Peace Fund and an African tandby Force (AF). Participants: This course addresses fourth or fifth year students in the Magister Afrikanistik programme and first year students in the European Master Global tudies and Master African tudies programmes, respectively. The coursework comprises of one verbal presentation (in a small group), a handout and for a graded certificate a written assignment of 3,500 words. The group size is max. 30 (20 African tudies, 10 Global tudies). This course is supported by the university s e-learning platform Moodle (https://moodle.uni-leipzig.de/). Farnham: Ashgate Cooperation and Conflict: Respacing Africa eminar Lecturer: Prof. Dr. Ulf Engel, Institute for African tudies Time: Thursday, 9-11am Place: GWZ pace has been reintroduced as an analytical category to the humanities and social sciences in the 1980/1990s. In fact territorial references to and the spatial organisation of collective political, social and cultural action are changing rapidly. This is usually attributed to a process conceptualised as globalisation. In Africa the dialectic of flows (deterritorialisation) and controls (re-territorialisation) is 10

affecting all spheres of life: politics and economics, but also sports, media to name but a few. In this seminar we will review the implications of the so-called spatial turn for the analysis of Africa in processes of globalisation. pecial emphasis will be on regionalisation and new regionalisms, cities, borders and the process of bordering, migration, new regimes of territorialisation etc. The seminar is divided into two parts: In the first part we will discuss analytical concepts such as social space and (spatial) governance. This will be followed by a short introduction into discourse analysis. In the second part participants will be encouraged to undertake their own small empirical projects. Material might include public speeches and online self-presentations of governments, regions, cities, transborder parks etc. Participants: This course addresses fourth or fifth year students in the Magister Afrikanistik programme and first year students in the European Master Global tudies and Master African tudies programmes, respectively. 12 Lecturer: Dr. habil. Peter Gärtner, Global and European tudies Institute, University of Leipzig Time: Monday, 5-9pm Place: NG 405 This course explores the intersections of Globalisation, Europeanisation and indigenous peoples. Indigenous peoples may not be numerically significant, but their rising strength as new political actors has catapulted indigenous peoples politics to the centre of the global stage. Indigenous survival, resistance and mobilisation have deep historical roots in the experience of conquest, European colonialism and state formation after independence. The course is organised around the analysis of indigenous peoples: First, as victims of European colonialism, second, as new political actors in the most Europeanised world regions (the Americas and outh Pacific) and third, as a new global movement. The course focuses on the transformative capacity of the indigenous movements both in the (post-)settler societies of Canada, United tates, Australia and Aotearoa/ New Zealand as well as the plurinational societies of Mexico and Bolivia. All themes we will discuss in a comparative perspective. uggested introductory reading: Adas, Michael: From ettler Colony to Global Hegemon: Integrating the Exceptionalist Narrative of the American Experience into World History, in: The American Historical Review, Dec. 2001, vol. 106, no. 5 / Boldt, Menno: surviving as Indians. Cambridge et al Organizational Note: This class will be held in 7 double sessions, starting with the beginning of the semester. Oil, Power and Climate A Global Perspective eminar Lecturer: Dr. habil. Peter Gärtner, Global and European tudies Institute, University of Leipzig, Germany Time: Tuesday, 5-7pm Place: NG 403 This course examines the intersections of the global trends of oil policy, the tensions between the most important producer regions and the consumer countries, the challenges of the energy security and climate change. The course seeks to explore the goals and challenges of oil policy as a result of the (asymmetric) interactions between the United tates as global oil power, the oil regions (Latin America, Middle East, Africa and Central Asia) and the most important extra-regional actors of the global energy policy (EU, Russia, and China). A special focus is directed on the debate around Peak Oil and its global impact (energy crisis, food crisis, ecological crisis and the resulting conflicts). The goal of the course is to give students a good understanding of the complexity and realities of the global and regional oil policy building through reliance on theoretical literature and specific case studies. uggested introductory reading: African Development Bank and the African Union: Oil and Gas in Africa. Fiction and Politics eminar Lecturer: Prof. Dr. Anne Koenen, Institute for American tudies, University of Leipzig Time: Thursday 9-11am Place: GWZ This seminar will explore political issues/periods like the (de)construction of gender and race, colonialism and imperialism, and the post Civil War era and the war in Vietnam, and analyze how fictions become implicated in hegemony (Dracula, Gone with the Wind, The Klansman) or undermine notions of supremacy (Pudd nhead Wilson, Wide argasso ea, Jubilee) or disturb familiar readings of the world (The Left Hand of Darkness, Dispatches). The final selection of texts and the format of the seminar will be discussed and decided on in the first meeting of the semester. This seminar is open to a limited number of Global tudies MA students and Magister students of American studies. Please apply by by April 3. We never crossed the border, the border crossed us : Mexican-American Cultural Productions eminar Lecturer: Prof. Dr. Gabriele Pisarz-Ramirez, Institute for American tudies, University of Leipzig Time: Wednesday 11am-1pm Place: GWZ The course aims at discussing Mexican American literature, film, documentary, and art as a body of cultural productions that since its emergence has contributed to redefinitions of the concepts of nation and national culture. We will look at central categories of national identity construction and identity performance such as the body, the family, and the community, as well as at the category of the borderlands as a trans-national concept which emphasizes the links between the United tates and other regions of the continent. Along an axis which moves from nationalism to cultural nationalism to transnationalism, we will study texts and images by Mexican Americans as works which have critically interrogated and reinterpreted concepts of Americanness and American culture. Novels we will read include Pat Mora's House of Houses (Boston: Beacon Press, 1997) and Alfredo Véa's, La Maravilla (New York: Plume, 1994). Purchase of novels recommended. All other reading materials will be available from lehrbox. 13

This MA-seminar is open to a limited number of advanced and motivated Magister- and Lehramts students as a Hauptseminar for Literary tudies. Please apply for this seminar by before April 5. In your application, please specify 1) your program of studies (Magister Haupt- or Nebenfach, Lehramt), 2) the semester in which you study, and 3) whether you want to earn a Leistungsschein in this seminar. tudents who plan to just sit in the seminar without active participation need not apply. The Americas in American Literature eminar Lecturer: Prof. Dr. Gabriele Pisarz-Ramirez, Institute for American tudies, University of Leipzig Time: Tuesday 3-5pm Place: GWZ This course situates the study of American literature in the context of the American hemisphere rather than the nation state. We will investigate the possibilities for the study of American cultural productions opened up when America is understood not as a synonym for an isolated United tates but as a network of historical and cultural connections that have extended across the hemisphere from the period of colonization to the present. We will read theoretical texts from the fields of comparative, inter- American and border studies as well as literary texts that articulate the intercultural relationships between the United tates and Latin America, Canada and the Caribbean. The first seven sessions of this MA course will be taught as regular class sessions, followed by a project phase in which participants will be expected to investigate a research project of their own choice. The course will conclude with a half-day colloquium dedicated to the presentation and discussion of the student projects. Reading materials for this course will be available from Lehrbox. 04-G 8300 Regions in Globalization: Asia and the Middle East Externally Accorded Roles or elf-portrayals? Discursive Constructions of an Emerging India post 1991 eminar Lecturer: Anandita Bajpai, M.A., Graduate Center for Humanities and ocial ciences Time: Tuesday, 1-3pm Place: NG 405 This seminar will delve into the various discourses that have contributed, especially post 1991, in the production of the imagination of an Emerging India. The seminar will provide insights into how post the Indian state s institutionalization of its neo-liberal economic reforms, there has been a paradigmatic shift 14

in how India has been perceived and portrayed by the world. From the Giant elephant symbolic of an unmanageable and sluggish economy to the airplane that has taken off, post 1991, numerous models, frameworks, economic prognoses have attempted to predict India s emergence as an economic and political power. India s presence in the rising BRIC (Brazil, Russia, India, China and outh Africa) economies, attempts to reform the UNC, emergence as a nuclear power, self-profiling as one of the largest democracies with a young population, growing security related role, the engagements in more recent outh-outh co-operation collaboratives such as IBA (India, Brazil and outh Africa) etc. are some illustrations in this direction. This seminar will engage into the dual question of how externally produced ideas of India project India as an emerging economic power and simultaneously how this has triggered a vigour in the response in how India projects itself as a growing, emerging or rising nation in a new foreseeable World Order. The overall environment in which the seminar will be set will engage with broader themes of economic globalization and the promises generated by neo-liberal economic reforms in countries like India. However, the emphasis will lie more on the production and fixation of a national imagination both for the national self as also for the external audiences. The seminar will first introduce the participants to overarching texts presenting a critique of economic neo-liberalism. It will then zoom in specifically into the Indian encounter with the neo-liberal economic reforms. The underlying idea is generate discussion on the multiple sides of the debate on the opening up of Indian economy. However, this will only formulate the setting or the background to the seminar. The core of the sessions will then proceed into an analysis of the numerous ways in which the externally produced discourses have accorded India the role of an emerging power. How does the external project the emerging India? These will be accompanied by how different actors within India profile the imagination of a rising India. In this context, the seminar will engage into introducing the participants to methodological instruments that help analyze these projections- speeches of the Indian political elite, campaigns of the Indian tourism industry, and depictions in media amongst others. The attempt will be to analyze how the themes of externally accorded roles and self-projections converse with each other in a post-colonial setting such as India whereas the red-string to the seminar will be the imagination of an Emerging India. Organizational note: The seminar starts on 17 April cience and the Post Colonial tate eminar Lecturer: abil Francis Time: Thursday, 3-5pm Place: NG 403 cience is vital to outh Asia. Home to some of the poorest nations on earth, it is also the site of two nuclear weapon states. It hosts some of the world s best universities and some of the world s most underprivileged people. Bangalore creates some of the world s finest software; it is also an island of prosperity in a sea of poverty. The role of science as an actor is essential to understanding historical and contemporary outh Asia. British rule was not based on the power of arms; it rested on a cultural hegemony that endured for more than 300 years. Gandhi successfully challenged this hegemony, yet, in the post colonial state his ideas of village based sustainable development were rejected in favour of heavy industrialisation. That drove millions into poverty, it also marked the ascendancy of India as a powerful nation state, symbolised by 15

nuclear power, big dams, and a vigorous IT industry. umming up, this class will focus on the role of science and technology in outh Asia, with an emphasis on the dominant regional power, India. Organizational Note: The first session will be held on 26 April The Mongols Block eminar Lecturer: Colin Mitchell Time and Place: 16 May 9-11am HG 17, 17 May 9am-1pm HG 17, 18 May 9am-1pm HG 17, 23 May 9am-1pm NG 205, 24 May 9am-1pm NG 205, 25 May 9am-1pm NG 205, 28 May 9am-1pm NG 205, 29 May 9-11am NG 205 This seminar is devoted to discussing and analyzing the arrival and the establishment of Mongol power in Eurasia in the medieval era. We will be interested in the rise of the Mongol tribes in Inner Asia, and their consolidation under Temujin, later known as Genghiz Khan. We will examine Mongol worldview, culture, economy and religion in the context of the teppe, and their uneasy relationship with urban, agricultural zones in western China and Transoxania. While some attention will be focused on the invasions and narrative of destruction which took place in China, Iran and Central Asia, we will be primarily concerned with the greater issue of how a militarized, nomadic culture such as the Mongols is capable of overwhelming such a large cross-section of sedentary, established political states (the Khvarazmians, the eljuks, the Ghurids, the ongs, the Jins,, the Tanguts). Moreover, there will be a focus on addressing the question of how a nomadic entity like this makes the transition to an established, quasi-sedentary empire stretching across Asia from eastern Europe to outheast China. We will examine the fragmentation of Chingiz Khan s empire, and the subsequent development of semiautonomous Mongol states (Golden Horde, Chaghata ids, Ilkhanids, Yuans) and their relationships with the home region of inner Mongolia and the indigenous people over which they ruled. The readings for the course will be available in moodle. Middle Eastern Labour History Block eminar Lecturer: Assoc. Prof. Dr. M. Erdem Kabadayi, History Department, Istanbul Bilgi University Time: 30 May 9-11am, 31 May 9am-1pm, 1 June 9am-1pm, 6 June 9am-1pm, 7 June 9am- 1pm, 8 June 9am-1pm, 13 June 9am-1pm, 14 June 9-11am Place: HG 16 This course is designed to investigate social and economic transformations of the Middle East in the nineteenth and early twentieth century from a labour perspective. In doing so, the course will follow and adapt recent developments in international labour history. Especially global labour history will have a priority in our agenda although we will have a regional focus. The countries/regions that will be covered are Egypt, the Greater yria, and Turkey. The period chosen is the long nineteenth century stretched into the interwar era and the reason for this is to be able to examine major changes in modes of production and consequent labour relations and global turning points in capitalist development. 16

The course will start with a review of recent developments in global labour history and underline major characteristics and methodological preferences of global labour historiography. In this respect the validity and utilization of class and other identities such as gender, religion and ethnicity will be questioned and examined by specific readings. Then we will evaluate the existing literature on the labour history of the Middle East and highlight recent approaches and discussions in the field. The major themes that will be analyzed are changes in labour relations, labour action, and strikes. The readings for the course will be made available in moodle. 04-G 8400 Regions in Globalization: Europe Political Economy of European Integration eminar Lecturer: Prof. em. 18 How is Europeanization related to globalization? Is the first the sum of processes inside the EU, while the latter describes what is going on in the rest of the world? Looking into the EU s narratives about itself this seems to be the prevalent interpretation. In contrast the seminar will demonstrate that this is a problematic notion as there are historically many entanglements between processes of Europeanization, European integration and an increasing global interconnectedness since the late 19th century. The seminar argues, that by looking at the entanglements between these two processes in a longer historical perspective and by analysing the EU s concept of globalization a better understanding of Europeanization and European integration will be possible. The seminar will start with investigating narratives which have been produced academically and politically about European integration, in this way introducing into the field of European integration history. This field has been confronted recently with rising criticism of being introverted. Therefore, in the second part of the semester the seminar will explore a range of arenas, in which globalization and Europeanization have been closely entangled: starting with the Pan-European movements of the interwar period as part of a larger internationalist movement, proceeding with the connection between early European integration history and decolonization processes and ranging to Cold War and post-cold War constellations including European development aid policy, the discovery of globalization in the Lisbon agenda, and the Eurocrisis which might lead to a new relation between Europe and other parts of the world, hinting to a great divergence upside down. Organizational note: The first session will be held on18 April. There will be no sessions in June, which will be made up for in double sessions in May. Therefore there will be room for preparation of essays in summer. Recommended preparatory reading: Desmond Dinan: Europe recast. A history of European Union, Basingstoke 2004 (UBL, Freihand Global tudies, MK 5100 D583). Jürgen Osterhammel: Europamodelle und imperiale Kontexte, in: Journal of Modern European History, Vol. 2 (2004), No. 2, pp (UBL, Zeitschriftensignatur NA 6302) Dominic achsenmaier: Recent Trends in European History. The World Beyond Europe and Alternative Historical pace, in: Journal of Modern European History, 7 (2009) 1, pp (UBL, Zeitschriftensignatur NA 6302) The European Neighbourhood Policy in the Dichotomy between Calculus and Cultural Approaches eminar Lecturer: Dr. Victoria Reinhardt, Global and European tudies Institute, University of Leipzig Time: Friday 1-3pm Place: NG 401 The relations between the enlarged European Union and its neighbour states are primarily marked by the need of the EU to secure its borders in the East and in the outh as well as to pursue its welfare policies through a common strategy of enhanced Europeanization called the European Neighbourhood Policy (ENP). Many scholars and politicians strongly support this policy and regard the EU as the only international actor able and willing to support and to some extent even to induce political, economic and social transformation of its neighbours on its model as it was the case with all the post-socialist European countries which joined the EU 15. Many scholars share the optimism of local politicians from 18

the EU neighbour countries and argue that the Union has the potential to settle frozen conflicts in its neighbourhood just through the same Europeanization even if these are regions where security interests of other important international actors as for example the Russian Federation (in the cases of Georgia and Moldova) determined so far their evolutions. ome local elites and many political scientists even believe that the Europeanization represents the solution for identity crisis in those regions where the nation building processes are not completed yet, which consequently blocks their economic, social and general environmental development. This strong belief in the EU transformation potential on the one side and in the readiness of the elites of these societies to shorten the nation building process through becoming European on the other side reminds of the prophecy belonging to the renowned French historian Ernest Renan who said in 1883 that all big and small states, nations and ethnic groups will one day build the big European Confederation. But what does Europeanization of the Neighbourhood actually mean? What are the tools the EU can employ for this purpose? What are the interests of the neighbouring countries and to which extent do they actually meet the political, economic and social security needs of the EU? How willing and how capable are societies from the European neighbour states in the East and outh to become European in Brussels understanding? This seminar addresses all these questions and aims at explaining the relations between the European Union and its Neighbour states both in the East and in the outh using the most recent research in this field as well as the insights of scholars that are currently working on Europeanization theories. As an introduction to the ENP, the seminar will first of all enable students to become familiar with the key facts and factors determining the relations between the enlarged EU and its neighbour states. Its final goal is to explain each particular case through the dichotomy between the two competing approaches in this respect: the calculus approach and the cultural approach. The literature requirements and the recommended readings will be available in moodle. Organisationale note: The seminar starts on 20 April Behind Moscow s Back: Beijing s Policy towards East-Central and outheastern Europe, eminar Lecturer: Prof. Dr. tefan Troebst, Geisteswissenschaftliches Zentrum für Geschichte und Kultur Ostmitteleuropas (GWZO) Time: Tuesday, 3 pm 4.30 pm Place: GEI R 3.15 De-talinization in the UR meant the beginning of the end of the ino-oviet alliance which in the 1960s lead to a formal split between the two Communist world powers. Next to the Third World, also oviet-dominated East-Central and outheastern Europe developed into a theatre of economic and ideological warfare between Beijing and Moscow. Focal points were the political crises in Poland and Hungary 1956 as well as in Czechoslovakia 1968 and Poland 1980/81. A temporary Chinese success was the bringing about of the shift of allegiance of Albania during the years 1961 to 1978 as well as the ino-romanian special relationship from the late 1950s on. According to Mao s Principle of the Triple Respect, the People s Republic of China did not directly interfere into Warsaw Pact member states relations with Moscow, did not mingle into internal affairs of the people s democracies and abstained from forcing its own ideological views on other Communist parties. The CPU on the other hand set up an information network of ruling Communist parties called Interkit (-kit from Kitai, Russian for 19

China ) to control Chinese ideological diversion in the COMECON countries. During recent years, a large number of documents has been made public by the Cold War International History Project (URL and the Parallel History Project on Cooperative ecurity (URL and also historical research has produced substantial new results. The seminar aims at an overall evaluation of the Chinese factor in the relations between ruling pro-oviet parties in Europe and the centre in Moscow. Knowledge of Mandarin, Russian, or Romanian is most welcome. For a better understanding of Europe s shared history dabei, ihr anti-totalitäres geschichtspolitisches Anliegen in Gestalt einer Platform of European Memory and Conscience zu institutionalisieren. 04-G 8600 Global tudies Colloquium I and ummer chool Colloquium Lecturer: Konstanze Loeke Time: Thursday, 5-7pm Place: NG 402 Participation: mandatory Examination: participation and presentations 20
