M. Rilke, aus: <Briefe über Cézanne> (Paris, 24.VI.1907) Das Theorieseminar S1 widmet sich unter dem Titel «transformation + methods» einem Begriffspaar, dessen Verhältnis alles andere als entspannt und theoretisch abgeklärt ist. Eher benennt der Titel ein Spannungsverhältnis mit konstruktivem Potential. Transformationen ereignen sich nämlich in radikaler Weise wenn Methoden, d.h. kontrollierte Verfahrensweisen, deren Regeln und Prinzipien theoretisch erkannt und gemeinhin anerkannt sind, verlassen und die ihnen zugrundeliegenden Prinzipien, Regularitäten und Gesetzmässigkeiten für einmal ausser Kraft gesetzt werden. Der arithmetische Junktor «+» sollte also nicht als Zeichen einer allzu friedlichen Verbindung missdeutet werden. Er sollte aber auch nicht durch den logischen Junktor des Entweder-oder (> <) ersetzt werden. Denn die Transformation braucht die Regeln, mit denen sie bricht und die sie überwindet gleichsam als Leiter. Die Abwesenheit von Regeln wäre daher ebensowenig fruchtbar wie deren totalitäre Verabsolutierung. Wenn das Denken die ausgetretenen Wege gesicherter und bereits vorweg theoretisch antizipierbarer Erkenntnisresultate verlässt, dann ist eben dieses auf Abwegegeraten Kennzeichen von Prozessen, die mit Günter Abel als solche radikaler Kreativität bezeichnet werden können.* Insofern Architektur von blossem Bauen sich abzuheben sucht, indem sie für sich beansprucht, Baukunst zu sein, erscheint Architektur gemäss diesem normativen Verständnis und damit architektonische Qualität als das emergente Resultat eines wenigstens im Moment des Geschehens methodisch nicht gänzlich kontrollierbaren, kreativen Prozesses. Architektonische Qualität ereignet sich damit jenseits der Grenzen dessen, was im voraus theoretisch hergeleitet werden kann. Aber was kann die Architekturtheorie dann zum Gelingen des architektonischen Entwurfs beitragen, wenn für diesen ein Ereignis wesentlich ist, das sich jenseits der Grenzen des Berechenbaren zuträgt? Sicher, im Nachhinein lassen sich so manche geniale Einfälle grosser Architekten rechnerisch rekonstruieren. Wie Georg Franck am Beispiel von Frank Lloyd Wrights Präriehäusern darlegt, konnte man deren zugrundeliegende Formengrammatik computerunterstützt rekonstruieren und entsprechend weitere Konfigurationen ableiten. Aber Wright standen die Rechenmaschinen nicht zur Verfügung. Zum Zeitpunkt, als er das Robbie House (1908) und Falling Water ( ) realisierte, befand er sich rein rechnerisch gesehen auf ungesichertem Gelände. Was ihn orientierte, war sinnliche Intelligenz, ein Urteilsvermögen, das nach Franck und darin kann er sich auf Kants Kritik der Urteilskraft abstützen über die Grenzen der begrifflich kontrollierten Erkenntnis hinausreicht. Was Wright intuitiv, d.h. methodisch ungesichert, erahnt haben muss, so Franck, war die «selbstähnliche Iteration» von Formen in der Natur, die einen gewissen Grad der Faltung und Zerklüftung erreichten, kurzweg eine fraktale Struktur, die sich durch alle Masstabsebenen durchhält.** Als man soweit war, mit der geeigneten Software Wrights Intuition rechnerisch abzusichern, war mehr als ein halbes Jahrhundert vergangen das Berechenbare 3

4 war ohne Neuigkeitswert, was die Formensprache angeht. Aber selbst mit den heutigen Möglichkeiten der virtuellen Visualisierung nicht-euklidischer Geometrien im Entwurfsprozess kann die von Wright und Mies van de Rohe angestrebte organische Geschlossenheit architektonsicher Formensprache zwar auch rein rechnerisch generiert werden, es bleibt aber die für den Entwurf zentrale Frage der Motiviertheit der aus der Überfülle möglicher Formen ausgewählten Form zu klären. Und hier, wo es um innere Kohärenz und den Bezug auf die Singularität des Bauplatzes und seines Kontextes geht, wo es um die Gewärtigung des Genius loci in dessen historisch-sozialen Komplexität geht, bleibt man, wiederum so Franck auf die sinnliche Intelligenz verwiesen. Denn, wie es schon bei Aristoteles heisst: Vom Besonderen gibt es keine Wissenschaft. Ebenso wie der Anspruch auf künstlerische Kreativität konfrontiert daher auch die Singularität des Ortes, der Genius loci, die Theorie im Entwurf mit den Grenzen begrifflicher Erkenntnis. Denn diese geht stets aufs Allgemeine und übersieht das Geschichtliche unserer Existenz, von der alles, auch Orte, in der Weise, wie es uns erscheint und gegeben ist, affiziert wird. Kann aber, wovon keine diskursive Erkenntnis möglich ist, Gegenstand von Theorie sein? Und wenn die Lehrbarkeit eines Stoffes dessen theoretische Durchdringung und systematische Aufarbeitung zur Voraussetzung hat, ist dann letztlich das, worauf es im architektonischen Entwurf ankommt architektonische Qualität zu generieren, überhaupt lehrbar? Oder muss sich Entwurfs-Theorie in der Architektur, wie auch in anderen Feldern, da Theorie auf künstlerische Erzeugnisse und deren Produktion reflektiert, wie im Falle von Literaturtheorie und Ästhetik, ein neues Selbstverständnis aneignen, das mit dem methodologischen Postulat der Sachgerechtigkeit bzw. Gegenstandsangemessenheit ihrer Erkenntnismethoden ernst macht. Was wären da die Folgen? Etwa eine Theorie, die sich mit dem kritischen Aufweis der Grenzen des jeweils methodisch Erkennbaren bescheidet und die, wie Paul de Man das für die Literaturtheorie postuliert hat, sich auf die Erarbeitung eines «negative knowledge»*** beschränkt, jenseits dessen die Kunst zumindest als das Unbestimmbare ex negativo verortbar wird? * Wie können sich Architekten Rechenschaft geben über das, was sich im Entwurfsprozess (auch mit ihnen selbst) begibt? Und inwieweit können solche Reflexionen auf den Prozess und dessen Dokumentation (mit welchen Medien) wegleitend werden für nachfolgende Entwurfsprozesse. Wenn es auch nicht zielführende Methoden gibt, d.h. solche, die das Generieren von Kreativität a priori sicherstellen (denn das wäre ja ein hölzernes Eisen), so stehen doch zumindest retrospektive Erklärungsmodelle für das Auftreten von Emergenz, d.h. unerwarteter, zuvor nicht antizipierbarer Ereignisse in kreativen Prozessen aus der Systemtheorie zur Verfügung. Deren Leistung und Grenzen in Theorie und Praxis werden der (Stadt-)Soziologe Maik Hömke sowie im Praxisfeld der Nachhaltigkeitsproblematik der Ökologe Freddy Breitschmid einführend behandeln. Anschliessend an den Abendvortrag des Architektur- und Kulturphilosophen Georg Franck (TU-Wien) zur zentralen Fragstellung der Seminarwoche Architektonische Qualität - Was vermag die Theorie im Entwurf? gehört das Wort dann der reflektierten Praxis kreativer Entwurfsprozesse in verschiedenen Disziplinen. Im Sinne eines Clusters, d.h. einer losen Gruppierung, die gerade keine vorweg unter einer systematischen 4

5 Perspektive hierarchisierten Anordnung gehorcht, werden verschiedene Entwurfspraxen aus den Gebieten der Architektur auf Grenzwegen, der musikalischen Komposition sowie der Ausstellungskonzeption und organisation vorgestellt. Dirk Hebel von den Instant-Architects (Berlin und Zürich) und tätig in der Architekturausbildung u.a. an der ETH-Zürich wird am Beispiel des jüngst von der UNO aufgegriffenen Konzepts des emergency-dwelling aus PET-Flaschen neue Wege im Entwurf vorstellen. Der Musiker Daniel Glaus, Professor an der Kunsthochschule Bern für Orgel und Komposition vergleicht in einem Workshop (gemeinsam mit Studierenden des Fachs Komposition) architektonische und musikalische Entwurfs- bzw. Kompositionsstrategien. Die Kunsthistorikerin und Kuratorin u.a. der jüngsten Bodensee-Trienale, Dorothée Messmer, gibt Einblicke in die Erfindung und das Management grosser Prozesse, wobei sie den Fokus auf das Spannungsverhältnis zwischen planerischer Führung und kreativer Offenheit für das Unerwartete legt. Aus den vielfachen Einblicken in und Anregungen aus diesen verschiedenen Bereichen kreativer Entwurfspraxis Synthesen für den architektonischen Entwurf zu erarbeiten, soll als Aufgabe den Studierenden überantwortet werden. Auf diese Weise soll im Prozess eingeübt werden, was nicht durch allgemeine Regeln lehrbar ist der selbständige Entwurf des Denkens im freien Zusammenspiel mit der sinnlichen Intelligenz (deren Ergründung freilich weiterhin Aufgabe der Theorie bleibt). Auf methodisch notwendig ungesichertem Terrain gilt es, Verbindungen zu generieren Wege zu finden auf der terra incognita, die jede Entwurfssituation von neuem darstellt. Tim Kammasch *G. M. Rilke from: <Letters on Cézanne> (Paris, 24.VI.1907) Going by its title, the theory seminar S1 on «Transformation + Methods» is dedicated to a pair of terms that are anything but relaxed and theoretically clarified. Rather, the title suggests a stress ratio with a constructive potential. Transformations occur radically when methods (i.e. the controlled procedures whose rules and principles are theoretically recognized and generally accepted) are being neglected and their underlying principles, regularities, and legitimacies are suspended. Therefore, the arithmetic sentential connective «+» should not be misinterpreted as a symbol for a peaceful connection. In addition, it should not be replaced by the logical connective of the either or (> <), because transformation uses as a ladder the rules it breaks and conquers. Hence, the absence of rules would be just as fruitless as its totalitarian absolutization. When the reasoning leaves the beaten tracks of verified and beforehand the- 5

6 6 oretically anticipated insights, this going astray is a characteristic of processes that Günter Abel calls of radical creativity. * As far as architecture distinguishes itself from mere construction work as it claims to be construction art, according to this normative understanding and therefore architectural quality, architecture seems to be the emergent result of a methodically not completely controllable creative process, at least during the time of action. Architectural quality, therefore, happens outside the limits of what can be deduced theoretically beforehand. However, what is the contribution of architectural theory to a successful architect s plan, when it needs an occurrence that happens outside the barriers of the predictable? Surely, with hindsight, many of the brilliant ideas of great architects can be reconstructed mathematically. As Georg Franck demonstrated, the grammar of the forms of Frank Lloyd Wright s Prairie Houses could be reconstructed with the help of computers, and it was further possible to deduce additional configurations. However, Wright did not have computers to help him. When he realized the Robbie House (in 1908) and Falling Water (from 1935 to 1937), he was walking on insecure ground in terms of figures. He oriented himself by means of his senses intelligence a faculty of judgment which, according to Franck and supported by Kant s Critique of Judgment, goes beyond the borders of the conceptually controlled understanding. Franck states that Wright must have anticipated intuitively, that is without methodical safeguard, the self-similar iteration of nature s forms that reached a certain degree of convolution and fissure, in short a fractal structure that is maintained though all levels of scales.** When the time had come and one could mathematically back up Wright s intuition with the corresponding software, more than half a century had passed and the calculable was without news value in terms of form language. But even with today s possibilities of the virtual visualization of non-euclidean geometries in the design process, the organic wholeness of architectural form language aspired by Wright and Mies van de Rohe may be generated in terms of figures, but the fundamental question for the design remains: the issue of why one chooses exactly the one form out of the abundance of possible forms. At this point, according to Franck, where it is all about the inner cohesion and the connection to the singularity of the site and its context, the expectation of the genius loci in its historical-social complexity, one again refers back to the intelligence of the senses. Already Aristotle said that there is no science of the particular. Just as the claim to artistic creativity, the singularity of the site, the genius loci, confronts the theory in the design with the limits of conceptual understanding as this theory always focuses on the general and disregards the historic aspects of our existence that affect everything, even places, in the way we see them and how they appear. However, can something of which no discursive understanding is possible, become a subject of theory? Moreover, if the prerequisite of a teachable subject is its theoretical penetration and systematic elaboration, can the main aspect of architectural design to generate architectural quality eventually be taught? Or does the design theory in architecture, just as in other fields of expertise, as the theory reflects the artistic works and their production ( just as in literature theory and esthetics), have to acquire a new self-conception that deals seriously with the methodological posit of justice or adequacy for the item of its methods of understanding? What would be the consequences? Could it be a theory that has to make do with the critical display of the limits of the methodically recognizable, and that confines itself to the development of a negative knowledge***,

7 beyond which art is at least recognized as the indeterminable ex negativo, just as Paul de Man posited for the literature theory? How can architects render an account on what happens during the design process (also with the architects themselves)? In addition, how can such reflections lead the way for the process and its documentation (by means of what kind of media) for future design processes? There are no target-aimed methods, i.e. methods that ensure the generation of creativity a priori (this would be a contradiction), but there are explanation models in retrospect for the appearance of emergence, that is the unexpected, unpredictable occurrences in creative processes in systems theory. The possibilities and limits in theory and practical experience of such models will be introduced and criticized by (urban) sociologist Maik Hömke and by the ecologist Freddy Breitschmid discussed in the practical area of the issue of sustainability. Following the evening lecture by the architecture and culture philosopher Georg Franck (Technical University of Vienna) on the central theme of the seminar week architectural quality - what are the influences of theory in the design the discussion will be on reflected practice of creative design processes in different disciplines. By means of clusters, i.e. loose groups that obey no hierarchical order that was previously arranged with a systematic perspective, different design practices are presented from the areas of architecture on border paths, musical composition as well as the conception and organization of exhibitions. Dirk Hebel (INSTANT Institute for Architecture, Nature and Technology Berlin and Zurich) works in the field of architectural education, for example at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich ETH, and will present new methods in design by means of his concept of emergency dwelling made of recyclable plastic bottles that was recently taken up by the UNO. Musician Daniel Glaus, Professor for Organ and Composition at the Bern University of the Arts, compares the different architectural and musical design and composition strategies in his workshop (together with students of the degree program Composition). Dorothée Messmer, art historian and curator (for example of the latest Lake Constance Triennial) will enable insights into the invention and management of large processes, where she focuses on the stress ratio between planning management and creative openness for the unexpected. The students task will be to develop syntheses for the architectural design by means of the diverse insights and inputs from these different areas of creative design practice. In this manner, the students will learn in the process what cannot be taught by general rules the autonomous design of reasoning in free interaction with the intelligence of the senses (whose exploration, admittedly, remains the task of theory). On necessarily insecure methodic ground, connections have to be generated; paths have to be found on the terra incognita that each design situation represents anew. Tim Kammasch * G. Princeton University 1971* Founded in 2002, INSTANT works at the intersection of architecture, nature, technology and communication. INSTANT foregrounds the body as a biological and social construct in order to develp research projects and architectural practice on various scales. Recent projects include the international traveling exhibition INVENTIONEERING_ARCHITEC- TURE, the private home HAUS_BLICK in Duesseldorf and the installation ON_AIR in Berlin. Founders and principals are Dirk Hebel and Jörg Stollmann. Dirk Hebel studied at the ETH Zurich and Princeton University. Jörg Stollmann studied at the UdK Berlin and Princeton University. They have held teaching positions at the UdK Berlin, the TU Berlin, Princeton University, and American University of Sharjah, AUS and are currently teaching at the ETH Zurich. 13
