9 Introduction The SCSI controller D1305 is a PCI board with an Ultra160 Wide SCSI interface, e.g. for use in PRIMERGY servers (SCSI = Small Computer System Interface). When delivered separately, the board may also be equipped with an external SCSI interface. Features Single channel SCSI controller Symbios/LSI 53C1000R Synchronous Ultra160 Wide SCSI transfer of 160 Mbyte/s Support of SE (Single Ended) and LVD signals (Low Voltage Differential) Multiple-mode terminating resistors with automatic selection between SE mode and LVD mode Termination can be switched on and off with SCSI Configuration Utility Internal 68-pin SCSI connector Connector for SCSI indicator (LEDs) on housing Indicators (LEDs) on the board for activity (red), SE mode (green) and LVD mode (green) Optional external SCSI interface (68-pin) Optional flash EPROM (2 Mbyte) for SCSI BIOS and EEPROM for configuration data on the board Updating of the SCSI BIOS with flash BIOS update possible Support of 64 or 32 bit PCI interface 33 or 66 MHz Conformance to PCI Specification 2,2 Target group You require some hardware knowledge in order to mount the board. Observe the safety notes in the Operating Manual of your system unit. Boards with electrostatic sensitive devices (ESD) are identifiable by the label shown. When you handle boards fitted with ESDs, you must, under all circumstances, observe the following points: You must always discharge static build up (e.g. by touching a grounded object) before working. The equipment and tools you use must be free of static charges. Remove the power plug from the mains supply before inserting or removing boards containing ESDs. 11 SCSI-CONTROLLER CE marking The shipped version of this board complies with the requirements of the EEC directive 89/336/EEC "Electromagnetic compatibility". Compliance was tested in a typical system configuration. When installing the board, refer to the specific installation information in the Operating Manual or Technical Manual for the receiving device. Connecting cables for peripherals must be adequately insulated to avoid interference. Ports and indicators = Internal SCSI connector 2 = Connector for SCSI indicator (housing) Installing the board! Please note the information provided in the chapter "Safety" in the operating manual of the system unit. Ê Ê Open the system unit (see Operating Manual, chapter "System expansions"). SCSI bus termination The SCSI controller is used as an interface between the system interface and devices with an SCSI interface, called SCSI devices in the following. The SCSI controller D1305 supports SCSI devices with SE (Single Ended) and SCSI devices with LVD signals (Low Voltage Differential). SCSI devices are interconnected with a cable routed from device to device. This provides all devices with access to a common "SCSI bus". The SCSI bus must be terminated at both ends, i. e. must be provided with terminating resistors. The operating manual or the technical manual for your SCSI device explains how to install, terminate and operate your SCSI device. The termination of the SCSI controller can be set with the SCSI Configuration Utility. Ê Press the key combination [Ctrl] + [C] during system start-up when the following message appears: Press Ctrl-C to start Configuration Utility... The SCSI Configuration Utility is called. Ê Select the function Termination Control in the Adapter Properties menu. When set to Off, the termination of the SCSI controller is switched off. When set to Auto, the termination of the SCSI controller is switched on. Depending on the connected SCSI devices, the SCSI controller automatically switches over to SE or LVD signals in this mode. For additional information on the SCSI Configuration Utility, see the "PCI SCSI Device Management System SMDS 4.0" manual. Connecting internal SCSI devices If only internal SCSI devices are connected, the terminating resistors must be installed on the board and on the last device connected to the SCSI bus. The terminating resistors must be removed from all other internal SCSI devices.
