7 Implementation of Interoperability in european railway networks is proceeding The new TSI includes the possibility of alternative use of two types of pantographs These two alternatives are the german standard of pantograph collector heads profile size of 1950 mm and the european standard profile of 1600 mm ( Eurowippe ) The result of the research project COSTRIM of UIC was that these two standards are convenient to conduct the entire electrified TSI-network ERA has asserted that about 2/3 of this network can be conducted with the german profile standard of 1950mm Regarding to these facts, the new regulation in the future TSI leads to an quantum jump in realising interoperability in european railway network DB Netz AG october

8 Adjustment of the entire railway network of DB Netz AG to the european standard would determine large costs Rough cost estimation of the German rail authority (EBA) for establishing the european pantograph collector head standard of 1600 mm on german railway network quotes about 20 bn. Euro The costs per unit for a new pantograph are amounting about 50,000 Euro Due to the high costs, in Germany the previous pantograph collector head size will be used as standard as well Therefore, technical solutions for railway vehicles which will be used in border crossing traffic will have to be developed Strategy of DB Netz AG includes selective analyses and a step-by-step realisation of implementation DB Netz AG aims to keep its railway network useable for german standard pantographs also in future 8

10 DB Netz AG is developing an implementation concept objective target According to the evolution of railway traffic, corridors which will comply with the european TSI standard will have to be defined The minimum track clearance envelope will be designed also in future for the german standard which is also compatible with the european standard The german pantograph standard will be used for lines which are part of the conventional TEN - exception: the utilization of european standard would meet technical and economical criteria useful The result of a consultation between DB Netz AG and german rail authority is that only for TEN lines of the category I the european standard is relevant 10
