3 The Perfect Tense To talk about past events in conversational situations, we use the perfect tense in German. We also use the Perfekt to talk about hot news! The perfect tense consists of an auxiliary verb (haben or sein) that takes the personal endings and a past participle that remains unchanged. Spielen hat gespielt ich habe gespielt wir haben gespielt du hast gespielt ihr habt gespielt er/sie/es hat gespielt sie/sie haben gespielt

4 Position of auxiliary verb & past participle The auxiliary verb takes the regular verb position (second element within a sentence) and the past participle is placed at the end of the sentence. Hast du gestern Abend das Fußballspiel geschaut? Ja, ich habe es geschaut.

5 The past participle of regular verbs Most German verbs form the past participle by adding the prefix ge- and the ending t or -et to the verb stem. The ending et is used if the verb stem ends in d, -t, or certain other consonant combinations. 6 The past participle of regular verbs Ich habe mir einen neuen Comuter (m) kaufen. Stefan hat gestern den ganzen Tag arbeiten. Du hast dir einen Sandwich (m) machen. Past participles of verbs ending in ieren do not have the prefix ge Ich habe 3 Jahre lang in Frankreich studieren. Wir haben das Fahrrad zusammen reparieren. Der Detiktiv hat den Tatort genau inspizieren.

7 The past participle of irregular verbs The past participles of irregular verbs end in en. The verb stem often undergoes a vowel change. Note: Unfortunately you will have to study endings again. (Most strong verbs and mixed verbs do not only change vowels but also have different Suffixes (-en, -t, -et). You will find a table in your book! 9 The verb sein as an auxiliary in the perfect tense For verbs that express a change of location (movement) or change of condition, German uses the verb sein as the auxiliary. The verbs can be regular or irregular z.b: kommen (change of location/movement) ich bin gekommen wir sind gekommen du bist gekommen ihr seid gekommen er/sie/es ist gekommen sie/sie sind gekommen
