2 vii Abstract Crude oil - water emulsions occur in many stages during oil production. The main task in offshore oil and gas production is to separate the gas, oll and water phases and to treat the individual phases in order to meet the product specifications. In spite of the great importance of this field, only few scientific studies have been conducted so far. The opaqueness and the variation in the properties of the crude oils are some of the difficulties associated in the characterisation, emulsion formation and measurement of the separation behaviour of crude oil - water emulsions. The present work involves in the development of the experimental techniques for the measurement of the variation with time in the spatial hold-up of water (water cut), drop size distributions and the heights of the sedimenting and coalescing interfaces during the separation of water drops from different crude oils. Furthermore, batch separation experiments are also carried out using different crude oils and model oils to simulate the crude oil - water emulsions formed in off-shore oil rigs. The effect of hold-up, settler geometry, temperature, mixing conditions, the concentration of the demulsifier and type of oil characterised by the concentration of the waxes on the separation is experimentally investigated. The experimental spatial variation in the hold-up of water with time is shown to be predicted by the Kynch theory. The experimental separation profiles are successfully used to verify the theoretical models developed based on droplet sedimentation and interfacial coalescence. The various studies are discussed below. Separation of crude oil-water and model oll emulsions was successfully studied using newly developed experimental techniques. The Gamma Density Profile Apparatus was able to record the continuous variation of the water cut simultaneously along the whole height of a batch settler. Rapid separating crude oil emulsions could be measured. The position of the sedimenting and the coalescing interfaces and especially the hold-up gradient inside the emulsion zone was determined for several crude oil-water systems. The structure of the emulsion is determined by the shape of the concentration profiles. The sedimentation and coalescence rates and, therefore, the quality of the separation were determined. An additional new equipment, based on video

3 viii technique, was developed for dense-packed crude oil emulsions. The Drop Video Monitoring system (DVM), was so constructed that drop size distributions from 10 to 1000 um could be measured, on-line or through batch sampling of emulsions from flow loops, mixers or settlers. An experimental study was performed in order to establish a basis for selection and design of the separation process of a heavy crude oil (HO)-field. The oil rig experiments were carried out with an Emulsion Flow Loop (EFL) and emulsion behaviours have been studied and compared with successful laboratory scale experiments, which were able to simulate the large scale runs reducing the time and cost of experimentation. The effect of the method of preparation of an emulsion on its separation was investigated using three different experimental set-ups designed based on the desired task; this enabled the dynamic behaviour to be studied. The evolution of the drop size distribution with time due to the drop breakage and coalescence was experimentally measured during the mixing using the DVM; the steady-state distribution being the initial drop size distribution in the settler. The higher the initial water cut, the bigger the mean drop diameter for both the crude oil and model oil systems. Several crude oil and model oil emulsions could be characterised by using the experimental equipment's and techniques, as described above, regarding especially the separation behaviour. An array of experiments has been carried out in order to show what influences the sedimentation and coalescence behaviour and therefore final separation time. Effects of temperature, settler geometry, water cut, water cut with addition of demulsifiers, demulsifier concentration, drop size distribution and wax extraction on the separation were studied experimentally. For both the light and heavy crude oils, the viscosity is found to decrease exponentially with the temperature thereby increasing the sedimentation velocity and interfacial coalescence rate due to larger drops formed in the mixer. This resulted in shorter separation times for the dispersions. The reduction in the viscosity of the heavy crude oil with increase in the temperature is much larger than that for the light oil. The separation time decreased with decreasing settler height and diameter, which could be used for the design of the continuous flow separators. Although the coalescing interface at the separated water layer is sharp at all water cuts, the sedimenting interface

4 IX at the separated oillayer is sharp only at high water cuts as reflected by the step change in the GDPA profiles. The water cut had also an effect on the sedimentation and coalescence. The separation time decreased with increasing water cut for all crude oils systems strongly in the absence of demulsifiers than in the presence of demulsifiers. Higher demulsifier concentrations and longer residence times in the mixing vessel resulted in reduced separation times due to increased binary coalescence during mixing process. This means that larger drops were formed and so the sedimentation velocity as reflected by the larger initial slope of the sedimentation profile obtained from the batch settling experiments. A model is presented allowing for the effect of the presence of initial turbulence during the sedimentation, which predicts the variation with time in the heights of the coalesced water and separated oil for a batch dispersion of given height, water cut, drop diameter and physical properties. The variation in the hold-up of water with time along the height of the dispersion can be predicted by the Kynch theory. These are verified using the experimental results obtained above.

5 xi Zusammenfassung Rohöl/Wasser-Emulsionen findet man in vielen Abschnitten in der ÖIproduktion vor. Die Hauptaufgabe in der ÖI- und Erdgasproduktion auf einer Bohrinsel besteht einerseits in der Trennung von Erdgas, Wasser und Erdöl und andererseits darin, die einzelnen Phasen so zu behandeln, daß vorgegebene Produktspezifikationen eingehalten werden können. Obwohl diese Prozesse für die Erdölproduktion äußerst wichtig sind, haben in diesem Gebiet nur wenige wissenschaftliche Untersuchungen stattgefunden. Die Undurchsichtigkeit und die sich ständig ändernde Zusammensetzung des Gemisches sind nur zwei der Gründe, die die Eigenschaften der Rohöl/Wasser-Emulsion und ihre Trennbarkeit stark beeinflussen. Die vorliegende Arbeit beschäftigt sich mit der Entwicklung experimenteller Methoden für die Trennung des Öl/Wasser Gemisches, um die räumliche Aenderung des Wasser hold-ups, die Tropfengrößenverteilung und Position der Sedimentations- und Koaleszenzgrenzflächen zeitabhängig zu bestimmen. Die Einflüsse des Hold-ups, der Geometrie der Sedimentationsgefäße, der Temperatur, der Rührbedingungen während der Emulsionsbildung und der Konzentration von Demulgatoren in der Emulsion werden für verschiedene Öltypen untersucht. Es wird gezeigt, daß die räumliche Verteilung des Wasser hold-ups mit der Theorie von Kynch beschrieben werden kann. Die experimentell ermittelten Separationsprofile konnten erfolgreich dazu benutzt werden, die theoretischen Modelle, die auf Tropfensedimentation und Koaleszenz basieren, zu bestätigen. Die verschiedenen Untersuchungen werden im folgenden Teil beschrieben. Die Trennung von Rohöl/Wasser und Modellöl/Wasser-Emulsionen wurde mittels neu entwickelter Techniken erfolgreich untersucht. Mit dem Gammastrahlenapparat konnte kontinuierlich der sich ändernde Anteil des abgetrennten Wassers über der gesamten Höhe des Trenners beobachtet werden. Sich schnell trennendes Öl konnte auf diese Weise gemessen werden. Die Position der Sedimentations- und Koaleszenzgrenzflächen und besonders der hold-up Gradient in der Emulsionszone wurden für verschiedene Öl/Wasser-Systeme bestimmt. Die Struktur der Emulsion ist durch die Form der Konzentrationsprofile gegeben. Die Sedimentations- und Koaleszenzgeschwindigkeiten und damit die Qualität der Trennung wurden bestimmt. Ein zusätzlicher experimenteller Aufbau basierend auf Bilderkennung wurde

6 xii konstruiert, um dicht gepackte Rohölemulsionen zu untersuchen. Mit Hilfe dieses "Drop Video Monitoring System" (DVM) war es möglich, on-line oder durch eine Probe, die Rohrleitungen, Mischern oder Trennem entnommen wurde, Tropfengrößenverteilungen im Bereich zwischen 10 und 1000 um zu messen. Eine experimentelle Studie wurde durchgeführt, um einen Prozess zu entwerfen, der für eine zukünftige Erdölplattform verwendet wird. Diese soll schweres Erdöl produzieren. Experimente mit einer Pilotanlage (Emulsion Flow Loop, EFL) und im Labormassstab wurden durchgeführt, die die Eigenschaften des Rohöl/Wasser-Gemisches und ihre Trennbarkeit untersuchten. Die Experimente im Labormassstab konnten die grosse Anlage erfolgreich simulieren. Der Zusammenhang der Emulsionsbildung mit der darauffolgenden Trennung wurde untersucht. Verschiedene Emulsionsvorrichtungen wurden aufgebaut und das dynamische Verhalten der Dispersionen wurde im Einzelnen studiert. Die Entwicklung der Tropfenverteilung wurde experimentell festgehalten unter der Benutzung des DVM's. Je höher der Wasser hold-up desto grösser die Wassertropfen, die für Erdöl- und Modelöl-Emulsionen gemessen wurden. Eine Reihe von Erdölen konnte charakterisiert werden unter Berücksichtigung des Trennverhaltens. Es war von Intresse, was eigentlich das Sedimentationsund Koaleszenzverhalten beeinflusst. Die Wirkung der Temperatur, die Geometrie des Trenners, der Wasser hold-up, der Wasser hold-up mit Zugabe von Demulgatoren, die Demulgatorkonzentration, die Tropfenverteilung und Wachs-extraktion wurde auf das Trennverhalten detailliert untersucht. Für leichte und schwere Rohöle ändert sich die Viskosität exponentiell nach unten und vergrössert so die Sedimentationsgeschwindigkeit und Grenzflächenkoaleszenzrate wegen den grösseren gebildeten Tropfen im Mischer. Das resultiert dann zu schnelleren Trennungszeiten. Dieser exponentielle Viskositätseffekt ist stärker bei den schweren Rohölen zu beobachten. Die Trennungszeit verkleinerte sich bei kleineren Trennern und Trennerdurchmessern. Diese Tatsache könnte bei der Konstruktion von kontinuierlichen Trennem benützt werden. Die Grenzflächenkoaleszenzebene war bei allen Modellöl-Versuchen scharf sichtbar. Bei der Sedimentationsebene konnte man nur bei hohen Wasser holdups (40 bis 75%) die Grenzfläche klar

7 Xlll erkennen. Das verschiedene Sedi-mentationsverhalten wurde auch von den Gamma-Strahl-Konzentrations-profilen bestätigt. Der Wasser holdup hatte einen zusätzlichen Effekt auf die Sedimentation und Koaleszenz. Die Trennungszeit verkürzte sich bei Erhöhung des Wasser holdups in allen Rohölemulsionen. Grössere Demulgatorkonzentrationen und Vermischungszeiten verkürzten auch die Trennung, da binäre Koaleszenz im Miseher erhöht wurde. Das konnte auch unter der Berücksichtigung der grösseren Anfangssedimentations-Steigung bewiesen werden. Ein mathematisches Modell wurde presentiert, das den Effekt der Anfangsturbulenz während der Sedimentation erlaubt und die dynamische Variation der Höhen des getrennten Wassers und getrennten Öls, in Abhängigkeit der totalen Höhe, des Wasser holdups, der Tropfendurchmesser und der physikalischen Daten voraussagt. Die dynamische Variation der gemessenen Holdup-Profile konnte auch vorausgesagt werden über die ganze Höhe des Trenners. Die Modelle wurden mit den experimentellen Daten überprüft.
