2 Abstract Human beings and animals show a remarkable ability to use their legs to robustly move in all sorts of difficult and unstructured environments. While wheeled systems set themselves apart through their high efficiency and velocity on flat surfaces, they are often not able to overcome more challenging and irregular terrain. In contrast, the mobility of a legged robot is only limited by the availability of discontinuous footholds that can be sparsely distributed throughout the environment. However, this ability comes with the drawback that legged robots, due to their intermittent support and the high position of the center of mass (CoM), tend to fall and tip over more easily than wheeled systems. This makes stability a key element when evaluating the performance of legged robots. Common stability criteria are usually based on geometric properties and internal states, such as the shape and position of the support polygon in relation to the CoM. This requires simplifying assumptions about the ground, which is consequently often considered to be completely flat, or - in more sophisticated models - piecewise planar. Terrain properties in a broader sense, such as friction coefficient, compliance, or small-scale geometry of the ground are only rarely taken into consideration. Yet, these properties will have a very big influence on the actual stability of a walking robot, as they determine the risk of slipping and sliding, as well as the overall reliability of a stance. Both, for static and dynamic considerations, estimating the terrain characteristic is hence very important for robust and efficient legged locomotion. Detailed knowledge about the terrain, especially on a small scale, will help to guide foot placement, constrain the CoM motion, or estimate the load-bearing iii

3 capabilities of a single contact point. For this, in addition to visual perception, physical interaction with the environment is indispensable. This can be observed in nature, where humans and animals not only visually but also haptically explore possible footholds when it comes to unknown and uncertain terrain. In this dissertation we study this aspect for legged robots. The problem is motivated through the actual progress in research of legged systems with respect to actuation principles and planning methods, which slowly allows to bring the robots from lab environments to real terrain. One important, but so far rather ignored part for the robust navigation in unstructured terrain, are methods that allow to estimate how well a certain foothold is suited as a support with regard to geometrical or mechanical terrain properties. The thesis heads towards closing this gap by presenting methods for the identification of the mechanical foothold robustness based on active haptic exploration. Further, the tactile information is combined with visual terrain features, thus allowing to predict the robustness of footholds that are not within the kinematic range of the robot and without the need of haptically testing each potential candidate. The robustness estimation is a valuable input for a foothold planner and will eventually allow legged robots to continuously learn from their own experience and adapt to unknown and unpredicted environmental challenges. iv

4 Kurzfassung Biologische Lebensformen mit Beinen verfügen meist über ausgezeichnete Fähigkeiten im Umgang mit schwer begehbarem Gelände. Die Fähigkeiten entfalten sich bei der Ausführung der Bewegung aber auch bei der Planung, die es erlaubt, anhand entsprechender Kriterien zum Beispiel die nachfolgenden Schritte und Fusspunkte im Gelände zu bestimmen sowie den Verlauf des Weges in weiterem Sinne. Wie die Firma Boston Dynamics mit ihrem Roboter BigDog eindrücklich gezeigt hat, sind moderne Laufroboter heutzutage langsam in der Lage, sich robust in unwegsamem Gelände zu bewegen. Dennoch sind die Navigationsfähigkeiten heutiger Systeme relativ beschränkt. Während ausgeklügelte Regler zur Stabilisierung der Roboter existieren, werden bei der Planung der nächsten Schritte meist sehr einfache Modelle der Umwelt verwendet. Gängige Modelle berücksichtigen weder Materialeigenschaften des Untergrundes noch kleine geometrische Eigenschaften in der Grössenordnung der Füsse. Weiterhin wird vorprogrammiertes Expertenwissen verwendet, um zu beurteilen, ob sich ein möglicher Ort im Gelände als Fusspunkt eignet. Je komplexer die Laufmaschinen und ihr Einsatzgebiet werden, desto schwieriger wird eine Beurteilung durch den menschlichen Experten. Bei einem autnomomen Einsatz der Roboter in unbekanntem Gelände wird eine Beurteilung gar unmöglich. Die vorliegende Arbeit stellt somit Methoden vor, die es Laufmaschinen erlauben, selbst ein Urteil über die Eignung von Fusspunkten zu machen. Dazu werden mögliche, unbekannte Fusspunkte mit einem Bein abgetastet und belastet. Messdaten von dem Belastungsvorgang erlauben dann eine Bestimmung der Robustheit der Region. In einem nächsten Schritt wird die Assoziation v

5 der Daten aus der haptischen/taktilen Interaktion mit weiteren Informationen des Geländes gelernt. Durch den Lernprozess ist es dem Roboter dann möglich, die Robustheit von Fusspunkten im Umfeld abzuschätzen, ohne dass ein physischer Kontakt bestehen muss. Dieses Wissen kann dann verwendet werden bei der Wegplanung, beispielsweise um rutschige Regionen wie Eisflächen zu umgehen. vi
