1 Deutsch Herbst 2013 Introductory German I MWF 8:55-10:05am Birgit Laramie Comenius C 409 mebim01@moravian.edu Phone: FL Department: Office Hours: Wednesday, 10:10-11:10am and by appointment Course Description and Objectives German 100 is an introduction and practice of elements of language structures in the classroom through oral and written exercises as well as class participation and homework assignments. Reading, writing, listening and speaking the language will be taught and practiced throughout the course. This course provides students with a sound basis for learning German as it is spoken and written today. Students will have the opportunity to communicate in concrete situations, engage in basic conversations, master the basic features of the sound and writing systems, and utilize a basic vocabulary. This course will also cover an introduction to contemporary life and culture in German speaking countries. Required texts for purchase Neue Horizonte. Introductory German, 8. Ed. Boston: HEINLE CENGAGE Learning, Neue Horizonte. Introductory German, Student Activities Manual, 8. Ed. Boston: HEINLE CENGAGE Learning, Additional materials will be provided by the instructor. Course requirements and Grading - grammar tests / vocabulary quizzes 40% - final exam 15% - projects - 10% - homework assignments 15% - attendance/ active participation 20% Letter Grades A B C D F 0-59 A B C D B C D Explanation of assignments: Grammar Tests / Vocabulary Quizzes Grammar to be tested includes all explanations found in Neue Horizonte and on provided worksheets. It will be tested for use in context. Vocabulary quizzes include assigned word lists from Neue Horizonte, as well as word lists provided by the instructor. Students will be required to translate words and phrases. Each chapter will include a grammar test (75% of your grade) and a vocabulary quiz (25% of your grade).
2 Projects The written project will be a two part assignment due at the end of the semester. The oral presentation will be a 7 to 10 minute group presentation at the end of the semester. Homework Written homework assignments are due at the beginning of the following class period. If you miss class (which you are highly discouraged from doing), it is your responsibility to obtain a copy of the homework assignment from the instructor, or from a classmate. For assignments in the workbook (WB), the procedure is as follows: Complete the assigned exercises. Then refer to the answer key sent to you via . Use a pen with a different color and make the appropriate corrections to your work. The workbook pages are also due at the beginning of the following class period and count as two assignments. Class attendance and participation Language-learning requires active class participation at all times! Unexcused absences will result in a lowering of your semester grade. Please notify me ahead of time if you know that you have to miss class. Plagiarism and cheating will be handled according to the Student Code outlined in the current Student Handbook and in the statement on Academic Honesty at Moravian College. Students who wish to request accommodations in this class for a disability should contact Elaine Mara, Assistant Director of Learning Services for Academic and Disability Support at 1307 Main Street or by calling Accommodations cannot be provided until authorization is received from the Academic Support Center.
