Allergenic proteins are an example of naturally occurring substances which people with allergies must avoid (see Appendix IIIa of EU Directive 2003/89/ EC for a list of allergens which must be identified on food pack aging). The quick identification of such ingredients is of immense importance during the production of safe foodstuffs. In order to develop qualitative and semi-quantitative rapid test systems based on immunological-analytical methods, the laboratory first selected milk, eggs, peanuts and nuts. Specific allergens and marker proteins are produced and characterized; antibodies are also produced. In succession, immunochromatographic test kits should deliver rapid proof. Fungi present enormous problems for both food and feedstuffs. The aim of this seven-year research project is to study the metabolism of mycotoxins in plant, animal and microbial organisms. Special attention is paid to the formation of conjugated and bound mycotoxins following infection of agricultural crops such as corn and wheat. There has been little research on these masked mycotoxins, yet they may contrib ute to the overall burden of mycotoxins in food and feed. The Christian Doppler Laboratory for Mycotoxin Metabolism is operated in cooperation with companies: in addition to the Austrian feed additive producer BIO- MIN, Nestlé, the world s largest food company, is also a partner from industry. The main focus of this institute is on establishing the ideal foundations for successful breeding of healthy and fertile animals while maintaining a balance between functional and performance-related attributes. The multifaceted research activities embrace not only the molecular and cellular biological study of reproductive methods, but also highly-developed analytical techniques. On the other hand, modern reproductive techniques are tested directly in practice in breeding, thus enabling fine-tuning and optimization. An additional institute priority is the development of strategies for diagnostics in animal husbandry. This institute is dedicated to the very origins of the animal-based food supply chain. Work is centered on appropriate feeding of agricultural livestock, with the ultimate aim of producing animal-based food (milk, meat, eggs) which is safe, of the highest quality and produced in a resource-efficient and environmentally friendly manner. One special priority is the secondary effects of individual food components on digestion, metab olism and overall health. Therefore, the area of focus is experimental studies involving agricultural livestock and animal models (rats, pigs) on the metabolism of nutrients and the effect of functional ingredients in feed as well as of feed additives. As well, the institute is also concerned with the analysis of nutrients (including trace elements) in biological material and the quantification of fractional nutrient fluxes in the intact organism (absorption, excretion, nutrient turnover in tissue). Together with two other European research institutions in Great Britain and Germany, the chair for Chem istry of Renewable Resources is a member of the fiber science excellence network which is being coordinated by Shinshu University in Ueda, Japan. Research tasks are focused on the chemistry of cellulose fibers and textiles, with emphasis on so-called intelligent fibers and intelligent textiles such as conductive fibers, solar cell materials based on cellulose, or even stimuliresponsive materials. Stimuli-responsive textiles for example feature components which may be activ ated, controlled and equipped with kinetically defined de layed-response mechanisms. Promoting the manufacture of products made of renewable materials is vital in order to solve the pressing global problems of energy supply and climate change. Working with four of the largest Austrian pulp producers, this project aims to enhance the utilization of the products and byproducts created by the pulp and paper industries. As the second most common product of pulp production in terms of volume, lignin and its various subtypes, such as kraft, sulfite and organosol lignin is the focus of research endeavors. By way of a lignin analytics platform, the analytical-chemical foundations for the molecular characterization of lignin can be determined. These form the basis for further modular projects which investigate technical applications (e.g. as binding agents, adhesives, fertilizers) and provide valuable insights on grade, extraction, workability and decoloration. As a natural fiber and main product of pulp production, cellulose in the future must be able to take on more diverse applications and fulfill more stringent quality criteria than ever before. This is why it is necessary to produce physically, chemically and/or enzymatically-modified fibers which are robust yet flexible. This fiber modification is the shared topic in the non-lignin area of activity. Seite 17

Phytopathology Research Group The research covers basic and advanced topics in plant pathology. One current subject of research is tomato/ fungus interactions in the rhizosphere. The main focus is on signalling events and compounds marking different stages of the establishment of interactions between plants and microorganisms (pathogenic, antagonistic and symbiotic fungi) in the rhizosphere. The understanding of these interactions and their effects on fruit quality is a prerequisite for biocontrol and other applications in practical agriculture. More over advanced issues are addressed, e.g. the performance of soil-borne pathogens and pests under different soil treatments in the field. Molecular Phytopathology Research Group The long-term goal of this research group is to improve the resistance of crops using genetic engineering. The nematology section is concerned with plant pathogenic nematodes which induce specific feeding sites in plant roots. Genes which are essential for the development of these feeding sites are investigated in order to determine the Achilles heel of these nematodes. The antimicrobial peptides section focuses on establishing expression systems for the production of peptides. This should enable the identification of previously unknown peptides with special antimicrobial activity. These peptides could ultimately be utilized as novel pesticides but may also find areas of application within medicine and veterinary medicine. The organization Technology Kids aims to use scientific experiments to stimulate interest and enthusiasm for technology and science among children ages Courses designed especially for kids offer them the chance to get to know science first hand by experi encing scientists daily routines. At least 20% of the course is spent experimenting together with scientists and engineers in their workplaces and laboratories. Thus children learn what it is really like to work as a scientist while at the same time exploiting the chance to have all their But why... -questions answered by aspirational role models. First, the Technology Kids project team visits kindergartens and elementary schools and carries out simple experiments directly on site. As soon as the children have learned the basic rules of research, each child receives lab equipment and an initial training session which takes place at the University of Applied Sciences, where an own Technology Kids lab has been estab lished for the program. Afterwards, the children have the opportunity to visit the scientists in their actual laboratories in order to get a feel for the research workplace. A significant strength of this proposed project lies in the first ever major correlation survey between PCR data and mass spectrometer analysis which also takes into account for the first time the masked form of fungi toxins. In order to carry out comparative measurements between PCR and reference values, the development of novel and highly sensitive multi-toxin methods for mass spectrometry is necessary. Aided by LC-MS/MS technology, the level of conjugated ( masked ) toxins, such as DON-3- glucoside, should be measured in samples. Identification and Production of Microorganisms and Biological Substances for the Monitoring of Fusarium Head Blight in Wheat The aim of this project at the Institute of Environmental Biotechnology is the isolation and production of microbial antagonists to combat Fusarium head blight in wheat. As a first step, microorganisms of wheat plants were isolated. Then suitable screening methods were developed in order to appraise the efficacy of these isolates. In addition, their efficacy was also directly tested on plants in the greenhouse and the field. Effective isolates were identified and then subject to a risk evaluation. Production processes in the lab and at pilot scale were developed for promising strains. As well, larger amounts of substances were produced to laboratory scale for analytical purposes. Entwicklung von Analysemethoden zur schnellen und mobilen Überwachung der mikrobiologischen Trinkwasserqualität Im Rahmen von AquaMicro ist vorgesehen, ein Verfahren zur mikrobiologischen Beurteilung von Trinkwasser in weniger als 12 Stunden zu entwickeln und Development of Analytical Methods for the Rapid and Mobile Monitoring of Microbiological Drinking Water Quality Within the framework of AquaMicro, a procedure which enables the microbiological evaluation of drinking water in less than 12 hours should be developed. Such a procedure would be a drastic reduction in the time required for such analysis in comparison to present tests. The procedure would meet the demands and parameters of the Austrian drinking water regulation. Objectives are to be achieved by combining innovat ive cultivation and molecular-biological methods. Through in-depth validation of the procedure itself and among varying procedures, the reliable detection of undesirable or bacterial indicators should be merged with the quantitative results of overall contamination. Multifunctional Bioplastics Nowadays, bioplastics are processed into molding forms, semi-finished products, and films. In 2004, the share of bioplastics was only 0.1%, or 250,000 tons, of the global total of 225 million tons of plastics consumed. This means that the potential for future market growth of bioplastics a material gained from renewable resources is enormous. The success of new material developments depends on their functionality. In order to conquer new areas of application, suitable properties must be developed in order to meet specific application demands. Because materials compete with each other on the market, it is essential to achieve significantly improved material properties in order to gain the competitive edge. The idea behind this project is to develop a high-quality, multifunctional material produced from biodegradable raw materials. This multifunctionality should be achieved through targeted compound modifications, such as the addition of wood-based fillers, chemical functionalization of matrix and filler, and the use of so-called carbon nanotubes (CNTs). 48 Tulln an der Donau / City of Tulln Garten- und Kunststadt Tulln an der Donau Die niederösterreichische Bezirkshauptstadt Tulln ist nicht nur als Wissensstandort, sondern auch als Garten-, Kunst- und Donaustadt weit über ihre Grenzen hinaus bekannt und bietet höchste Freizeitqualität für BürgerInnen und Gäste. Tulln The City of Gardens and Art District capital Tulln on the Danube is not only a hightech hub, but is also the Lower Austrian capital of gardens and art. The city offers unparalleled recreational opportunities to both natives and visitors. As the home of Europe s first ecological garden fair, GARTEN TULLN, it is fitting that the city is literally carpeted with green spaces. Starting off from the GARTEN TULLN, an idyllic path leads across the water park. Whether on foot, bicycle or boat, in only minutes the Danube and the magnificently designed river landing and the historic main square can be reached. Located on the Danube landing, the Egon Schiele Museum showcases the early years and works of this interna tionally-renowned artist who was born in Tulln in At the Roman Museum, visitors can experience the earliest origins of Tulln, when it was a Roman military fort over 1,900 years ago. The fair organizer Messe Tulln, the provincial firefight ers school, and of course the Tulln campus of the University of Applied Sciences enhance the city s reputation as a place of science and education. Tulln a great place to live and visit. Seite 48
