2 Abstract Certain geochemical eharaeteristies in island are magmas (e.g. subehondritic Nb/Ta, high SrN), typieal also for the eontinental erust, imply among other minerals the involvement of gamet and amphibole in their formation. However, the loeation of interaetion of are magmas with those minerals is highly disputed. In this thesis I present equilibrium and fraetional erystallization experiments along the liquid line of descent to elueidate the fractionation path of mantle derived magmas at eonditions relevant for lower are ernst formation. Aseries of hydrous ( wt.%), high-pressure ( GPa) piston-eylinder experirnents at temperatures of 800 to 1350 C, and different redox eonditions (N-NNO and C-CO-COz) have been eondueted. Two hydrous magma systems were studied; a primary mantle-derived pierobasalt and an andesite initially derived from the pierobasalt by fraetional erystallization. Experiments have been doped with a range of traee elements including LILEs, REEs and HFSEs (total of 18) in order to determine mineral-liquid partition eoeffieients. In the pierite system olivine is the first liquidus phase followed by clinopyroxene ± orthopyroxene, then gamet and, at the latest stage of erystallization, amphibole. Equilibriumerystallization derivative liquids are tightly eonstrained by the bulk eomposition of the system and remain generally (olivine-) hypersthene-normative. On the eontrary, the fraetional series is dominated by erystallization of Si-poor mineral phases (garnct and amphibole), whieh drives derivative liquids from olivine- to qtz-normative along the liquid line of deseent following a eale-alkaline trend. In the andesite system, I foeused on the roles of H20 eontent and pressure on the stability field of gamet and amphibole, At 1.2 GPa gamet is a ubiquitous high-temperature liquidus phase, independent ofthe initial water eontent (4-8 wt.% H20). At lower temperatures gamet is fol1owed by clinopyroxene at lower water contents «6 wt.%) and by amphibole by higher water eontents. The onset ofplagioclase oeeurs at lower temperatures (::::900 C). At 0.8 GPa and high H20 content (8 wt.%) amphibole is the first liquidus phase, With deereasing temperature andlor HzO eontent (::::8 wt.%) gamet and plagioclase crystallize eoneomitant with amphibole. With deereasing H20 eontent (::::6 wt.%) gamet is replaeed by spinel, Mineral/liquid traee element partition coefficients examincd along the liquid of deseent ofthe

3 pierobasalt show that the partition eoeffieient for clinopyroxene ehanges with differentiation. LlLEs, REE and HFSE beeome inereasingly incornpatible and the MREE and HREE change their eharaeter from ineompatible to compatible. Traee element modclling using gamet and amphibole traee-element partition coefficients determined in the andesitic system rcvcals that "diseriminant" geochemieal ratios, such as Sr/Y, Zr/Sm and Nb/Ta for derivative dacite to rhyolite liquids can be produeed by as little as 6wt.% of gamet fractionation at the base of a growing island are. Therefore, high Sr/Y ratio alone cannot be used to unequivocally identify "slab-melts". Furthermore, fractionation of medium Mg# amphibole from andesite liquids depletes Nb relative to Ta generating derivative liquids that are eharaeterized by subchondritic Nb/Ta ratio typieal ofaverage continental erust. This study shows that gamet and amphibole are fractionation produets from primary hydrous mantle derived magmas at the base of an island are. Derivative liquids evolve along a typieal calc-alkaline differentiation trend and may have traee element ratios that are highly fraetionated compared to the parental magma. 4 Zusammenfassung Bestimmte geochemischen Charakteristiken von Inselbogen Schmelzen (z.b. subcondritische Nb/Ta, hoch Sr/V), typisch auch für die gesammte Kontinentale Kruste, implizieren, dass unter anderem, Granat und Amphibole in ihrer Entstehung beteiligt waren. Die Lokation an dem die Schmelze mit diesen Mineralen reagiert, wird widersprüchlich diskutiert. In dieser Arbeit präsentieren wir gleichgewicht- und fraktionierte-kristallisations Experimente, um den Entwicklung von primitiven Mantelschmelze bei Bedingungen relevant für die untere Kruste zu untersuchen. Eine Reihe von wasserhaltigen ( wt% H20) hoch Druck ( GPa) Experimente wurden mit Hilfe der Druckstempelpresse (end-loaded piston cylinder apperatus), bei einem Temperaturbereich von 800 bis 1350 C und unterschiedlichen Redoxbedingungen (Ni-NiO and C-CO-C02) durchgeführt. Zwei wasserhaltige magmatische Systeme wurden untersucht; ein primärer aus dem Mantel stammender Pikrobasalt und ein Andesite, der durch fraktionierte Kristallisation aus dem Picrobasalt hervorgegangen ist. Experimente wurden zusätzlich mit verschiedenen Spurenelementen (insgesamt 18 verschiedene inkl, LILEs, REEs, und HFSEs) angereichert, um Mineral-Schmelze Verteilungs-Koeffizienten zu bestimmen. Im pikritischen System Olivine ist die erste liquidus Phase gefolgt von Klinopyroxene, ± Orthopyroxene, Granat und, im letzten Stadium der Kristallisation, Amphibole. Die Zusammensetzung der Schmelzen in Gleichgewichtsexperimente ist kontrolliert von der gesamt Zusammensetzung des Systems, und sind generell (Olivine-) Hypersthen Normativ. Im Gegensatz dazu sind die Fraktionierten-Kristallisation Experimente Charakterisiert durch die Fraktionierung von Si-verarmten Minerale (Granat, Amphibole), wodurch die resultierende Schmelze sich von Olivine- zu Quarz Normative entlang eines Kalk-Alkalinen Fraktionierungspfad entwickelt. Im andesitischen System, habe ich mich speziell auf die Rolle von H20 Gehalt und Druck auf das Stabilitätsfeld von Granat und Amphibole konzentriert. Bei 1.2 GPa Granat ist die allgegenwärtige liquidus Phas, unabhaengig vom Initialen Wassergehalt (4-8 wt.%). Bei niedriger Temperatur kristallisiert Granat zusammen mit Klinopyroxene bei niedrigem Wassergehalt «6 wt.%) und zusammen mit Amphibole bei höherem Wassergehalt. Plagioklase kristallisiert bei niedrigerem Temperaturen (:S 900 ). Bei 0.8 GPa und hohem 111

5 HzO Gehalt (8 wt.%) Amphibole ist die erste liquidus Phase. Mit abnehmender Temperatur und/oder HzO Gehalt (::; 8 wt.%) Granat und Plagioklase kristallisieren zusammen mit Amphibole. Mit abnehmenden Wassergehalt (::;6wt.%) wird Granat durch Spinel ersetzt. MineraVSchmelze Spurenelementverteilungskoeffizienten wurden entlang des Fraktionierungspfades des Pikrobasalts untersucht und zeigen, dass die Koeffizienten für Klinopyroxene sich während der Differentiation ändern. Während LILEs, REEs und HFSE inkompatibler werden, ändern sich MREE und HREE von inkompatible zu Kompatible. Spurenelementmodellierung mit den rm andesitischen System bestimmten Verteilungskoeffizienten zeigen, dass "Diskriminante" geochemische Verhältnisse, wie z.b. Sr/V, Zr/Sm und Nb/Ta für entwickelte, dacitische bis rhyolitische, Schmelzen erklärt werden können durch 6 % Fraktionierung von Granat an der Basis eines wachsenden Inselbogens Dementsprechend kann man z.b. hohen SrN Verhältnisse nicht indikative für sog. "slab-melts" ansehen. Fraktionierung von Amphibolen mit mittlern Mg# verarmen Schmelzen an Nb relative zu Ta und resutiert in Schmelzen mit einem subchondritisches Nb/Ta, typisch für die gesammte Kontinentale Kruste. Diese Studie zeigt, dass Granat und Amphibole als magmatische Produkte aus primären wasserhaltigen Mantelschmelzen in der unteren Kruste eines Inselbogens fraktioniert werden können. Resultierende Schmelzen entwickeln sich entlang eines typischen Kalk-Alkalinen Differentiationspfad und haben stark fraktionierte Spurenelementverhältnisse. Dementsprechend muss man Vorsicht walten lassen In der Interpretation von Spurenelementverhältnisse die Granat und Amphibole anzeigen. IV
