4 Forschung in Adlershof Cluster und Netzwerke als Zukunftsmodell Research in Adlershof Clusters and Networks, a model for future prosperity Einst wichtigster Standort der Akademie der Wissenschaften der DDR, ist Berlin Adlershof, die Stadt für Wissenschaft, Wirtschaft und Medien heute einer der 15 größten Technologieparks weltweit: mit über 350 Firmen, 12 Außeruniversitären Forschungseinrichtungen und den mathematisch-naturwissenschaftlichen Instituten der Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. Hier arbeiten, forschen, entwickeln, lehren und lernen schon heute insgesamt fast Menschen. Diese Zahl könnte sich in 10 Jahren verdoppeln, wenn der Standort sich weiterhin so positiv entwickelt wie bisher unbeschadet von bundesweiten Einbrüchen und einer insgesamt schwierigen Situation in den neuen Ländern. Längst sind die Beschäftigungszahlen von vor der Wende eingeholt. Ein einzigartiger Erfolg! Dabei war nach der Wiedervereinigung auch Adlershof auf öffentliche Förderung und politische Unterstützung angewiesen und wird dies in gewissem Umfang auch in Zukunft sein. Wichtig ist, dass sich die notwendigen Aufwendungen zunehmend rechnen. Schon heute zahlen die Wirtschaftsunternehmen am Standort weit mehr an Steuern, als das Land Berlin für den laufenden Betrieb der Wissenschaftseinrichtungen aufbringen muss. Dabei zeigt sich, dass erfolgreiche Cluster und Netzwerke sich bottom up entwickeln, also selbstorganisiert sind. Die außeruniversitären Forschungseinrichtungen in Adlershof haben sich bereits 1992 zur Initiativgemeinschaft Außeruniversitärer Forschungseinrichtungen in Adlershof (IGAFA e. V.) zusammengeschlossen. Sie generieren so gemeinsam nicht nur eine lebendige Kultur der Kommunikation und des Erfahrungsaustauschs zwischen Forschungseinrichtungen, Universität und Unternehmen, die IGAFA schafft darüber hinaus weitere Synergien durch den Betrieb einer gemeinsamen wissenschaftlichen Infrastruktur und engagiert sich intensiv beim Public Understanding of Science. Außeruniversitäre Forschung in Adlershof ist aber natürlich vor allem durch exzellente wissenschaftliche Qualität zu einem national wie international hoch geachteten Markenzeichen geworden und ist somit auch erstklassiger Werbeträger für den Wissens- und Innovationsstandort Berlin. Zusammenarbeit aller beteiligten Akteure ist für zukunftsweisende Cluster ebenso essentiell, wie Netzwerkbildung in Schwerpunkten. Ein vorbildliches Beispiel für die engagierte Mitwirkung auch der Wirtschaft (und nur durch diese kann man hoffen, dass ein Cluster die notwendigen organisatorischen Strukturen mittelfristig wenigsten partiell selbst tragen kann) ist das Netzwerk Optec-Berlin- Brandenburg (OpTecBB) e. V. Heute arbeiten die mehr als 80 Mitglieder von Op- TecBB aus Wissenschaft und Wirtschaft gemeinsam am Erfolgskurs der optischen Technologien für das 21. Jahrhundert in Berlin und Brandenburg. Adlershof kann sich mit Recht als Herzstück dieses attraktiven Kompetenznetzes bezeichnen. Die hier vorgelegte vierte Informationsbroschüre der IGAFA erstmals durchgängig zweisprachig gibt einen aktuellen Überblick über das Cluster Adlershof, die Adlershofer Forschungseinrichtungen, deren Entwicklung, aktuelle Forschungsprojekte, Kooperationen und Ansprechpartner. Der vordere Teil informiert über die Aktivitäten der IGAFA e. V. und internationale Gäste kommen zu Wort, der hintere Teil enthält auch einige, freilich nur skizzenhafte Hinweise zu den naturwissenschaftlichen Instituten der Humboldt-Universität war doch deren Ansiedlung in Adlershof stets ein Kernstück des Standort-Konzepts. Planung, Neubau und Umzug eines Universitätsteils mit über 7000 Studierenden in Rekordzeit: vom finanzwirksamen Beschluss des Berliner Senats dauerte es bis zur Vollendung 2003 weniger als 6 Jahre! An dieser Stelle sei allen gedankt, die an der nun fast 15 jährigen, erfolgreichen Entwicklung von Adlershof mitgewirkt haben. Dieser Dank geht in ganz besonderer Weise an die Berliner Politik und Verwaltung, die mit beispielhafter und seltener Einmütigkeit über alle Parteigrenzen und Senats-Ressorts hinweg in Adlershof stets das wichtigste Zukunftsprojekt des Landes gesehen und den Standort entsprechend entschlossen gefördert haben. Dank geht auch an die Standortpartner für eine sehr kooperative und konstruktive Zusammenarbeit, an die WISTA-MANAGEMENT GMBH, die Adlershof-Projekt GmbH, die Humboldt- Universität und stellvertretend für die innovativen Unternehmen an den Technologiekreis Adlershof, in welchem sich diese gerade kürzlich mit neuem Schwung zusammengeschlossen haben. Die außeruniversitären Forschungseinrichtungen in Adlershof wünschen allen aktiv in der Wissenschaft und in innovativen Unternehmen Tätigen eine anregende Lektüre ebenso wie all jenen, die an Wissenschaft, Forschung und darauf aufbauender wirtschaftlicher Prosperität in der Region Berlin und Brandenburg interessiert sind. Once the most important site of the former Academy of Science of East Germany, Berlin Adlershof, the City of Science, Technology and Media, enjoys today the privilege of belonging to the 15 largest technology parks worldwide: with more than 350 small and medium size companies, 12 non-university research institutions and the science faculties of the Humboldt-University at Berlin. Nearly 18,000 people work here, do research and develop new products, teach and study. This figure might double within the next 10 years if the site continues is promising development unimpeded of nation wide stagnation and enormous economic problems in the new German states. The number of people employed on site has long outgrown that before the German unification a singular success story! Clearly, after the unification Adlershof had to rely on public financial funding and on political support and it will need some attention of this kind also in the future. What counts is that in the long run output outbalances the input. Already today the tax revenue from the companies on site is much larger than the amount of public money spent for the running costs which the state of Berlin has to afford for the research institutes in Adlershof. This may be seen as evidence that successful clusters develop bottom up and follow the principle of self-organisation. The non-university research institutes in Adlershof have formed already in 1992 the Joint Initiative of Non-University Research Institutions in Adlershof (IGAFA e. V.). They generate jointly a lively culture of communication and exchange of knowledge between research institutes, university, and commercial enterprises. In addition, the IGAFA is instrumental in facilitating further synergies by operating a joint scientific infrastructure and by active engagement in a Public Understanding of Science. On the other hand Non-University Research in Adlershof has become a nationally as well as internationally highly renowned trade mark by scientific excellence and cutting edge research. It is thus one of the unique selling points for Berlin as a metropolis of knowledge and innovation. For trendsetting clusters collaboration of all relevant players from the different fields of competence is as important as networking in key focal areas of research and development. One model example for active engagement of small and medium size enterprises is the network Optec Berlin Brandenburg (OpTecBB) and we note in passing that only through such engagement of successful SME s one may hope that the organizational structure needed to maintain such clusters can be financed by the desirable public-private partnership. Today more than 80 members of OpTecBB from research institutes and industry work jointly for the success of optical technologies in the 21st century in Berlin and Brandenburg. Adlershof can be proud to form something like a core of this attractive network of competences. The fourth IGAFA information brochure presented here for the first time in throughout English and German gives an up to date survey on the cluster Adlershof, the research institutions in Adlershof, their development, current research projects, cooperations and contact persons. The first part informs about the activities of the IGAFA e. V., international guests are voicing their opinion on the site, and in the last section a few, albeit very brief notes about the science institutes of the Humboldt University are also given the relocation of these institutes to Adlershof having always been a decisive building block in the concept of Adlershof. Planning, construction of the buildings and the actual relocation of the institutes, i.e. of a major part of the university involving over 7000 students took place in a record time: from the conclusive governmental decision to the completion in 2003 this whole process took less than 6 years. At this point we have to thank all those who have participated in the now nearly 15 years of successful development of Adlershof. In particular we are grateful to Berlins politicians and its administration who in seminal and quite unusual unanimity beyond all party limits and departmental boundaries stood firm to Adlershof as unique for the future prosperity of Berlin and very strongly supported the project.we also thank all partners responsible for the site: the WISTA-MANA- GEMENT GMBH, the Adlershof-Project GmbH, the Humboldt University and representative for the innovative enterprises the Technologiekreis Adlershof, in which the SME s just recently joined with promising, fresh engagement. Ein starker Wille und frischer Schwung beflügelte die Deutschen in der Hoffnung, die beiden inzwischen so unterschiedlichen deutschen Teile wieder zusammenzuführen. Wie wir heute wissen, verpuffte dieser Schwung allzu rasch eine der offensichtlichen Ausnahmen: Adlershof! Mit dem soliden Fundament der vom Wissenschaftsrat positiv bewerteten Forschergruppen aus der Akademie der Wissenschaften der DDR gelang es den Außeruniversitären Forschungseinrichtungen, Adlershof innerhalb einer Dekade zu einem international anerkannten Wissenschaftsstandort zu entwickeln. Heute arbeiten in den Instituten fast Mitarbeiter, davon circa 880 Wissenschaftler. Die Institute haben einen Gesamthaushalt von ca. 130 Mio. /Jahr, davon sind ein beständig ansteigender Teil Drittmittel, z. Z. rund 38 Mio., und weniger als 29 Mio. kommen aus der Landeskasse Berlin. Bereits 1992 haben sich die 12 Außeruniversitären Forschungsinstitute zur Initiativgemeinschaft der Außeruniversitären Forschungseinrichtungen in Adlershof (IGAFA) zusammengeschlossen. Was als Interessenvertretung für die von Bauarbeiten geplagten Institute begann, hat sich zu einem Netzwerk der Forschungseinrichtungen gewandelt, das beispielhaft für die heute viel gerühmte Clusterbildung ist. Die IGAFA e.v. vertritt die Institute gemäß ihrem Satzungszweck, der Förderung von Wissenschaft und Forschung. Ziel ist die Schaffung neuer Synergien und neuen Wissens durch Förderung der interdisziplinären wissenschaftlichen Zusammenarbeit und des Erfahrungsaustauschs der Forschungseinrichtungen untereinander sowie mit Universitäten und Wirtschaftsunternehmen. Die IGAFA unterstützt die Schwerpunktbildung der Forschung in den Schlüsseltechnologien des 21. Jahrhunderts (siehe Abbildung 1, unten). Außerdem versteht sich die IGAFA als Dienstleister für wissenschaftliche Infrastruktur und Serviceleistungen. Sie betreibt zwei Internationale Begegnungszentren (IBZ) in Adlershof und Köpenick mit verschiedenen Veranstaltungsräumen und Unterbringungsmöglichkeiten für fast 100 Gastwissenschaftler. Gemeinsam mit der Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin engagiert sich die IGAFA für die wissenschaftliche Bibliothek im Erwin Schrödinger-Zentrum und organisiert den gemeinsamen Einkauf im Bibliotheksbereich z. B. von Datenbanken und Online-Diensten für Zeitschriften. Das Wissenschaftsbüro Adlershof als Geschäftsstelle der IGAFA e. V. steht allen an Wissenschaft und Forschung Interessierten für Informationen zur Verfügung. Mit der Durchführung von jährlich über 90 wissenschaftlichen Veranstaltungen und Informations- und Kommunikationstechnologie Information Technology 21% Nachhaltigkeit und Ressourcen Sustainability and Resources 18% internationalen Austauschprogrammen fördert die IGAFA aktiv den wissenschaftlichen Dialog und das Verständnis neuer Forschungsergebnisse in der Öffentlichkeit. Die in der IGAFA e. V. zusammengeschlossenen Institute pflegen nicht nur den wissenschaftlichen Austausch untereinander, auch die Verzahnung mit den Universitäten in Berlin und Brandenburg ist für Adlershofer Wissenschaftler selbstverständlich so sind die meisten Institutsdirektoren gleichzeitig als Professoren der Hochschulen berufen (siehe Abbildung 2, rechts). Die enge Vernetzung der Adlershofer Forschungseinrichtungen in der internationalen Scientific Community beweisen insgesamt fast 1000 Kooperationen weltweit. Im Vorstand der IGAFA e. Germans were filled with zest for action and showed the strong will to bring back together the two parts of the country, which had developed in such different ways. As we know today, this action was not as successful as one might have hoped for. One of the obvious exceptions, however, is Adlershof. Based on the recommendation of the German Science Council to restructure potentially promising and scientifically successful research groups from the East-German Academy of Sciences, the non-university research institutions have turned Adlershof into an internationally recognized location of science and research within only a decade. The institutions currently employ some 1,500 personnel, approximately 880 of which scientists. What started out as a lobby for institutions plagued by construction work has turned into a network of research institutions that sets an outstanding example of cluster formation, a much-praised concept these days. As set out in the by-laws, IGAFA promotes science and research. To this end, it endeavors to create synergy and new knowledge by fostering interdisciplinary scientific co-operations and the exchange of experience among the research institutions as well as with the universities and the business sector. In addition, IGAFA sees itself as a provider of scientific infrastructure and services. It runs two International Meeting Centres for Scientists and Scholars at Adlershof and Köpenick, which provide various function rooms and accommodation for almost 100 visiting scientists. It also supports Humboldt University at Berlin in operating the scientific library at the Erwin Schrödinger Centre and coordinates library-related purchases for its member institutions, e.g. of databases and online services of scientific journals. The Science Office, IGAFA s permanent office, is a point of contact for those interested in science and research. IGAFA organizes more than 90 scientific events and international exchange programs per year in an effort to engage scientists and the public in scientific dialog and thus foster a greater public understanding of research results. The institutions that form IGAFA do not only exchange scientific ideas and results among themselves. Adlershof scientists are an integral part of the university network in Berlin and Brandenburg, as can be seen from the fact that many institute directors also hold a professorship (see chart 2 on the left) with one of the universities. Also, Adlershof-based research institutions are engaged in some 1,000 co-operations worldwide, which can be seen as an indication of their close integration into the international scientific community. Wenn man einen Wissenschaftler fragte, an was er denn arbeite, war die Antwort meist ein langer ungläubiger Blick. Erst wenn man sich selber als Mitglied der wissenschaftlichen Community zu erkennen gab, folgte eine Erklärung, die nur vorsichtig als sehr fachspezifisch beschrieben werden kann. Forschungsergebnisse öffentlichkeitswirksam darzustellen oder gar Kontakt zu Journalisten zu pflegen, war der Karriere wenig förderlich und der Begriff Wissenschaftsmarketing nahezu unbekannt. Die Wende kam mit der Wende. Berlin wurde Hauptstadt und Regierungssitz. Bei vielen von staatlicher Finanzierung abhängigen Institutionen veränderten sich die Vorzeichen. Vieles wurde auf den Prüfstand gestellt und was man nicht verstand, dafür wollte man auch kein Geld ausgeben. Der Elfenbeinturm begann zu wackeln. Einen wesentlichen Anteil daran, dass heute zumindest der dem Public Understanding of Science zuzuschreibende Teil des Wissenschaftsmarketings zum Allgemeingut in Forschungseinrichtungen und Universitäten gehört, hatte das Aktionsprogramm PUSH (Public Understanding of Science and Humanities) des Stifterverbandes für die deutsche Wissenschaft. Dieses basierte auf einem Memorandum der großen deutschen Wissenschaftsorganisationen (MPG, FhG, HGF, WGL, DFG, HRK, AiF, Wissenschaftsrat und Stifterverband), in dem sich diese für einen angemessen hohen Stellenwert der Öffentlichkeitsarbeit in Forschungseinrichtungen und Universitäten einsetzen und Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissenschaftler auffordern, ihre Arbeit öffentlich auch in einer für den Nicht-Spezialisten verständlichen Form darzustellen. Von 1999 bis 2003 bewarben sich bundesweit insgesamt 514 Wissenschaftlergruppen um Förderung ihrer Projekte bei PUSH; gefördert wurden davon 67 Projekte mit einer Gesamtsumme von 1,2 Mio.. Die IGAFA e. V. gehörte bereits mit zu den ersten Preisträgern mit dem Projekt PHASEN ein Dialog zwischen Wissenschaft und Kunst, bei dem zwischen 2000 und 2003 zahlreiche Photoarbeiten, Videos, Installationen und Skulpturen entstanden, die in 5 Ausstellungen in Adlershof gezeigt wurden. Die Forschungseinrichtungen in Berlin organisieren seit 2001 jedes Jahr eine Lange Nacht der Wissenschaften mit über 50 teilnehmenden Einrichtungen und nahezu Besuchern pro Jahr. Das Ende des Elfenbeinturms war gekommen. Zielgruppen von Wissenschaftsmarketing sind heute im wesentlichen die Öffentlichkeit, als deren Vertreter die Politik sowie innovative, technologieorientierte Firmen, genauso wie Universitäten und Forschungseinrichtungen im In- und Ausland, die Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft, Stiftungen und Verbände, entweder als direkte Drittmittelgeber (Industriemittel) oder als Kooperationspartner. Wo ist heute der Erfolg zu sehen? Veranstaltungen in Adlershof, obwohl vom Berliner gern als j-w-d bezeichnet, finden zunehmend öffentliche Beachtung; beispielsweise ist die Lange Nacht der Wissenschaften besonders in Adlershof ein großer Erfolg. Auch die Veranstaltungen in einzelnen Instituten profitieren davon. So kann sich der Tag der Raumfahrt beim DLR oder Physik zum Frühstück bei BESSY hoher Besucherzahlen erfreuen. Dass alle diese Aktivitäten den wissenschaftlichen Erfolg nicht schmälern müssen, zeigen aber daneben ca. 900 wissenschaftliche Publikationen in referierten Fachzeitschriften und ca. 400 eingeladene Vorträge, die jährlich aus den Instituten hervorgehen. Adlershof ist nicht nur in Berlin, sondern auch international in der wissenschaftlichen Community angekommen. Adlershof kann sich außerdem im Großen und Ganzen der Unterstützung der Berliner Politik erfreuen. Häufig wird Adlershof Berlins wichtigstes Projekt genannt, mit dem Nachsatz: Das dürfen Sie aber nicht zitieren! Der Umzug der Mathematisch-Naturwissenschaftlichen Fakultäten der HU nach Adlershof ist jedenfalls in beispielhaft kurzer Zeit gelungen. Auch der Erfolg der Aktivitäten in Richtung von Unternehmen und Kooperationspartnern stimmt zuversichtlich. Die von den Außeruniversitären Forschungseinrichtungen eingeworbenen Drittmittel haben sich von 1995 mit 15 Mio. bis zum Jahr 2004 auf 35 Mio. erhöht, also mehr als verdoppelt. When one asked a scientist what he was working on then, the answer was usually a long, incredulous look. An explanation that can only be carefully described as very technical would follow only when one revealed him or herself to be a member of the scientific community. It didn't exactly advance one's career much to go public with research findings or even to keep in contact with journalists. A concept such as science marketing was almost unheard of. The turning point came with the turning point the so-called Wende. Berlin became the capital and the seat of the government. The wind began blowing in a new direction for many institutions dependent on government financing. A great deal was put to the test and that which one did not understand, one did not want to spend any money on. The ivory tower began to wobble. The program for action PUSH (Public Understanding of Science and Humanities) of the Donors Association for the Promotion of Science and Humanities in Germany (Stifterverband) has played a major role in ensuring that nowadays science marketing, or at least the branch of science marketing that can be attributed to Public Understanding of Science, has become the common property of research establishments and universities. This was based on a memorandum of the major German scientific organizations (Max Planck Society (MPG), Fraunhofer Society (FhG), Helmholtz Association of German Research Centers (HGF), Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Science Community (WGL), German Research Council (DFG), German Rectors Conference (HRK), German Federation of Industrial Cooperative Research Associations (AiF), Science Council and Stifterverband) in which they advocate that the appropriate level of importance be attributed to public relations in research establishments and universities, while at the same time requesting that scientists present their work to the public in a form which is also comprehensible to non-specialists. From 1999 to 2003 a total of 514 groups of scientists nationwide applied for funding from PUSH for their projects. Of this number, 67 projects were sponsored for a total amount of 1.2 million Euros. IGAFA was already among the first prize-winners with the project PHASEN, a dialogue between science and art. Emerging from this between 2000 and 2003 were numerous photographic works, videos, installations and sculptures that were displayed at 5 exhibitions in Adlershof. Every year since 2001 the research establishments in Berlin organize a Long Night of Sciences with more than 50 participating facilities and nearly 15,000 visitors per year. The end of the ivory tower had come. At present, science marketing is targeted primarily to the public, the politicians representing them and innovative, technology oriented companies, just like universities and research establishments at home and abroad, the German research council, foundations and associations, either as direct third party donors (industry funding) or as cooperation partners. Where here can success be seen? Although described as being off the beaten track by those from Berlin, events in Adlershof are receiving increasing public attention. For example, the Long Night of Sciences (Lange Nacht der Wissenschaften) is an especially great success in Adlershof. Individual institutes events also profit from it.thus the Day of Space Travel by the German Center for Aerospace (DLR) and Physics for Breakfast by the Berliner Elektronenspeichering-Gesellschaft für Synchrotronstrahlung (BESSY) can enjoy higher attendance turnouts. The fact that all of these activities do not have to detract from the scientific success is also borne out by approximately 900 scientific publications in peer-reviewed professional journals and approximately 400 invited lectures per year from the institutes. Adlershof has not only made its mark in Berlin, but also in the international scientific community. Moreover, on the whole Adlershof can enjoy the support of Berlin s politics. Adlershof is often referred to as Berlin s most important project, with the added provision: You mustn t however quote this! The move of the mathematical natural science faculties of Humboldt University to Adlershof was accomplished in any case in an exemplary short amount of time. Also the success of activities in the direction of business and cooperation partners is reassuring. Third party funds raised from non-university research establishments have increased from 15 million Euros in 1995 to 35 million Euros in 2004, thus more than doubling. In Adlershof sind die Ideen des Public Understanding of Science auf fruchtbaren Boden gefallen: Das Wissenschaftsbüro Adlershof der IGAFA organisiert während des gesamten Jahres zahlreiche Aktivitäten für verschiedene Zielgruppen. Eines der Highlights sind die Tage der Forschung, bei denen rund Schülerinnen und Schüler der Berliner und Brandenburger Gymnasien in circa 50 Vorträgen, Führungen und Experimenten von Außeruniversitären Forschungseinrichtungen und Instituten der Humboldt-Universität Wissenschaft hautnah und praxisorientiert erleben. Mit Veranstaltungen wie den Experimenten aus Weltraum und Verkehr, Virtuellen Welten oder Superlicht für Forschung und Technik lassen sich die Jugendlichen nicht nur für praktische Chemie und Physik, sondern auch für die Arbeitswelt der Wissenschaftler begeistern. So tragen auch die Außeruniversitären Institute ihren Teil zur Nachwuchsförderung in den Naturwissenschaften bei. Ca. 50 Besuchsprogramme jährlich gehören ebenfalls zu den Leistungen des Wissenschaftsbüros; sei es für deutsche oder internationale Wissenschaftlergruppen, Vertreter anderer Technologieparks, Wissenschaftsjournalisten oder Mitarbeiter von Wissenschaftsverwaltungen. Für alle in Adlershof explizit an Wissenschaft und Forschung Interessierten wird eine ihren Bedürfnissen entsprechende Führung zusammengestellt. Außerdem beteiligt sich die IGAFA an zahlreichen gemeinsamen Besuchsprogrammen mit den Standortpartnern Humboldt-Universität und der Betreibergesellschaft WISTA-MANAGEMENT GMBH. Die Förderung des wissenschaftlichen Austausches bildet den zweiten Tätigkeitsschwerpunkt des Wissenschaftsbüros. Den Wissenschaftlern vor Ort bietet das Wissenschaftsbüro mit einer Vielzahl von, teilweise gemeinsam mit den Forschungseinrichtungen gestalteten, Kolloquien die Möglichkeit Erfahrungen auszutauschen, Kontakte zu knüpfen und aktiv an den Netzwerken in den Forschungsschwerpunkten des Standortes Adlershof mitzuwirken. Beispielsweise wurden aktuell Workshops zu den Schwerpunktthemen Verkehrsforschung, Miniaturisierung und Materialforschung durchgeführt. Dokumentationen der Workshops sichern die Nachhaltigkeit der Ergebnisse. Die IGAFA begrenzt ihre Aktivitäten auf das Initiieren von Kooperationen und Netzwerken. Ein Beispiel für ein voll ausgebildetes Netzwerk mit Außeruniversitären Forschungseinrichtungen, Universität und Unternehmen ist der Ver- ein OpTecBB (siehe Seiten 64, 65). In den Bereichen Materialforschung sowie Information und Kommunikation befinden sich ähnliche Netzwerke in der Entwicklung. Die Förderung der interdisziplinären Verzahnung mit den naturwissenschaftlichen Instituten der Humboldt- Universität ist ein vorrangiges Ziel der Arbeit. Institutions- und fachübergreifend veranstalten die IGAFA und die Humboldt-Universität das Adlershofer Kolloquium und vergeben jedes Jahr gemeinsam mit der WISTA-MG den Adlershofer Dissertationspreis. Der Preis wird verliehen für die herausragende Arbeit eines Wissenschaftlers, die in Adlershof angefertigt wurde. Auf dem kurzen, informellen Weg geschieht das Netzwerken in Adlershof beispielsweise beim Academic Lunch, der einmal monatlich stattfindet und bei dem Institutsdirektoren der Forschungseinrichtungen, Professoren der Humboldt-Universität und Geschäftsführer von technologieorientierten Unternehmen aus Adlershof ein aktuelles Thema aus Forschung und Technologie bei einem zwanglosen Mittagessen diskutieren dabei ist in der Regel ein prominenter Gast z. To that end, IGAFA's Science Office Adlershof organizes numerous activities for different target groups throughout the entire year. One of the highlights of these activities is the so-called Days of Research (Tage der Forschung). There, the non-university research institutions and Humboldt University's departments at Adlershof offer roughly 50 talks, guided tours and hands-on experiments to provide some thousand pupils from high schools in the federal states of Berlin and Brandenburg with a more practice-oriented approach to science. Events like Space and Transportation Experiments, Virtual Worlds or Fantastic Light for Research and Technology appeal to the youths and do not only stimulate their practical interest in chemistry or physics, but also in the environment that scientists work in. In doing so, the non-university research institutions assume their share of responsibility for the recruitment of future scientists. Furthermore, the Science Office organizes some 50 visitor programs per year, be it for German or international scientists, representatives from other science or technology parks, science journalists of newspapers and magazines, or for members of the public administration dealing with science-related issues. It plans guided tours in such a way as to meet the individual demands of visitors with a specific interest in science and research in Adlershof. Also, IGAFA takes an active part in numerous visitor programs organized in co-operation with its partners Humboldt University and WISTA-MG, the developing and managing company of the Adlershof science park. Another central aspect of the Science Office's activities is to promote the exchange of scientific ideas and results. To that end, the Science Office organizes a wide variety of colloquia, partly in cooperation with the research institutions, to provide scientists working in Adlershof with a forum where they can exchange experiences, intensify contacts with other scientists, and help expand the networks of the key research areas in Adlershof. Events that serve as good examples of the Science Offices's activities in this field are the workshops that have been held recently to discuss such topical issues as transportation, miniaturization, and new materials and processes. Workshops such as these are thoroughly documented to ensure the sustainability of the achieved results. IGAFA limits the range of its activities to initiating co-operations and networks. A good example of a fully developed network between non-university research institutions, universities, and private companies is OpTecBB (see pages 64, 65). Similar networks are beginning to evolve in the areas of new materials and processes as well as information technology. A primary concern of the Science Office's work is to encourage close interdisciplinary co-operation and networking of the non-university research institutions with Humboldt University's science departments. Crossing institution and discipline boundaries, IGAFA and Humboldt University jointly organzise the Adlershof Colloquium and award the Adlershof Dissertation Prize together with WISTA-MG. The prize is awarded to scientists for outstanding results achieved in Adlershof. 8 Das Erwin Schrödinger-Zentrum Ein wichtiges Fundament für die Informationsversorgung der außeruniversitären Forschungsinstitute bildet die Beteiligung der IGAFA e. V. an der Zentralbibliothek Naturwissenschaften der Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin im Erwin Schrödinger-Zentrum. Dort stehen ca Monographien, Nachschlagewerke und Zeitschriftenbände der bisherigen Zweigbibliotheken für Mathematik, Informatik, Physik, Chemie, Geographie und Psychologie der Humboldt-Universität sowie die früher in der Zentralen Fachbibliothek für Umwelt zusammengeführten Bestände ehemaliger Adlershofer Akademie-Institute zur Verfügung. Über eigene und gemeinsame Konsortialverträge mit Verlagen und Datenbankanbietern erhalten die Mitgliedsinstitute der IGAFA e. V. Zugriff auf wissenschaftliche Datenbanken und elektronische Volltexte von Zeitschriftenartikeln, die in wachsendem Umfang auch am Arbeitsplatz der Wissenschaftler in den Instituten zugänglich sind. The library features some 400,000 monographs, reference books, and journal volumes. It comprises the former collections of Humboldt University s branch libraries for Mathematics, Computer Science, Physics, Chemistry, Geography, and Psychology as well as of the Central Library for the Environment, which hosted the merged collections of the East-German Academy of Sciences institutions at Adlershof. IGAFA s member institutions have individually and jointly contracted with publishers and database providers to enable their scientists to access scientific databases and full-text electronic articles, not only at the library but also at an increasing number of individual workstations. Thus, the Adlershof research institutions have direct access to an information and communication centre that combines the well-established services of a scientific library with the advantages that electronic information services offer. IGAFA personnel assist in operating the Erwin Schrödinger Centre and help ensure optimal use of the electronic media, e.g. for professional searches. 9 Die Internationalen Begegnungszentren Wissenschaft lebt vom Austausch von Kenntnissen und Ideen und besonders von der Begegnung zwischen Wissenschaftlern. Die Alexander von Humboldt-Stiftung versteht die von ihr geförderten Internationalen Begegnungszentren (IBZ) als Dächer für den Dialog. Im Rahmen des IBZ Ost-Programms sind in Adlershof und in Köpenick je ein Internationales Begegnungszentrum entstanden, die den Adlershofer Forschern die Möglichkeit geben, ihre wissenschaftliche Zusammenarbeit mit Kollegen aus aller Welt zu intensivieren. Den Gastwissenschaftlern werden neben einer angenehmen Unterkunft umfangreiche Möglichkeiten zur wissenschaftlichen Kommunikation und zur Begegnung geboten. Die IGAFA e.v. ist seit dem 1. Januar 1998 Trägereinrichtung beider IBZ; der Betrieb der Einrichtungen wird über das Wissenschaftsbüro der IGAFA koordiniert. Im Jahr 2004 waren die beiden Häuser zu über 95 % ausgelastet, 130 Wissenschaftler aus 33 Ländern bereicherten die wissenschaftliche Arbeit in Adlershof. Eine Aufschlüsselung nach Herkunftsländern zeigt die Grafik. Die Gastwissenschaftler kommen mit unterschiedlichen Zielsetzungen nach Berlin Adlershof für ein kurzfristiges Kooperationsprojekt, um ihre Dissertation anzufertigen oder für eine auf Dauer angelegte Mitarbeit in den Forschungseinrichtungen. Alle Wissenschaftler schätzen die räumliche Nähe der Begegnungszentren zu den Instituten, die einen regen wissenschaftlichen Dialog der Gastwissenschaftler untereinander und mit den Forschern aus den Instituten ermöglicht. In Kolloquien und Seminaren tauschen sich die Wissenschaftler über ihre Forschung in Adlershof und die Situation der Forschung in den Heimatländern der Gastwissenschaftler aus. Dafür stehen in beiden IBZ Seminarräume in unterschiedlichen Größen zur Verfügung. Immer öfter kommen die Wissenschaftler aber nicht mehr nur allein, sondern bringen ihre Familien mit. Um diesen verschiedenen Bedürfnissen der Wissenschaftler an ihre Unterbringung Rechnung zu tragen, bieten die IBZ Wohnungen in unterschiedlichen Preisklassen und Größen: Im IBZ Adlershof kann der Wissenschaftler zwischen dem Zimmer in einer der beiden Wohngemeinschaften, elf 1-Zimmerwohnungen und vier 2- sowie einer 3-Zimmer Wohnungen wählen. Das IBZ Köpenick ist etwas kleiner, dafür durch die Lage direkt an der Dahme besonders idyllisch gelegen. Hier stehen acht 1-Zimmer- und acht 2-Zimmerwohnungen zur Verfügung. Alle Appartements sind komplett ausgestattetet und möbliert, die Mietzeiten variieren zwischen drei Monaten und zwei Jahren. Haus 3 des IBZ Adlershof ist überwiegend der Nutzung durch Wissenschaftler von BESSY (Berliner Elektronenspeicherring-Gesellschaft für Synchrotronstrahlung mbh) vorbehalten. Internationale Forschergruppen kommen zu BESSY, um dort Synchrotronstrahlung für ihre Versuchsreihen zu nutzen, die direkte Nachbarschaft zwischen dem Elektronenspeicherring und dem Gästehaus erlaubt den Wissenschaftlern eine optimale Aus- schöpfung der Messzeiten. Im Haus 3 stehen für die Wissenschaftler sechzehn Wohnungen mit insgesamt 32 Betten bereit. Um das Umfeld in Adlershof für die Gastwissenschaftler, Mitarbeiter und ihre Angehörigen so angenehm wie möglich zu gestalten, fördert die IGAFA unterschiedlichste kulturelle, soziale und sportliche Aktivitäten. Dies erlaubt eine schnelle Integration und den Aufbau einer persönlichen Beziehung zu Adlershof, Berlin und Deutschland. Gerne ist die IGAFA behilflich bei der Suche nach der richtigen Schule für die Kinder, dem Arzt oder passenden Deutschkursen. Die Aufenthaltsräume mit vollständig ausgestatteten Küchen werden von Instituten und Gästen für eine Reihe von Festveranstaltungen, Jubiläen und anderen Feiern genutzt. Fernsehzimmer mit modernen Medien laden zu gemeinsamen Videoabenden ein. Kinder können sich draußen auf kleinen Kinderspielplätzen mit Schaukeln und Sandkästen vergnügen. Im Haus bietet das Spielzimmer alles, was das Kinderherz begehrt. Gegen eine geringe Gebühr können Fahrräder gemietet werden, die sowohl den täglichen Weg zur Arbeit als auch kleine Ausflüge ins Umland oder das Zentrum erleichtern. Verschiedene Tageszeitungen informieren über Berlin, Bibliothek, Fitnessraum und Klavierzimmer runden das Freizeitangebot in den IBZ ab. 10 International Meeting Centres for Scientists and Scholars Science thrives on the exchange of knowledge and ideas and hence on the communication among scientists. In the effort to facilitate such communication, the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation funds International Meeting Centres for Scientists and Scholars (IBZ), which it sees as "roofs giving shelter for communication. Two International Meeting Centres for Scientists and Scholars, the IBZ Adlershof and the IBZ Köpenick, have been built as a part of the IBZ East Program, offering researchers from Adlershof the opportunity to intensify their contacts and cooperation with fellow researchers from all over the world. Here, visiting scientists do not only find comfortable accommodation, they also have ample opportunity to meet and communicate with other scientists. Since 01 January 1998, IGAFA has been responsible for running both meeting centres. This work is coordinated by IGAFA s Science Office. In 2004, both guest houses operated at 95 % capacity, enabling 130 scientists from 33 countries to add their knowledge and experience to the scientific life in Adlershof. The chart on page 15 itemizes their home countries. Visiting scientists come to Adlershof for different purposes, such as to participate in a short-term cooperation project, to work on their theses, or to collaborate with an institution on a long-term basis. All visitors appreciate the proximity of the meeting centres to the research institutions, which facilitates an active dialog among the visitors as well as with local researchers. Colloquia and seminars provide visiting scientists with an excellent opportunity to discuss their research in Adlershof with other scientists and to present the research that is being conducted in their home countries. To accommodate such events, both IBZs have multiple seminar rooms in different sizes. More and more scientists choose to bring along their families instead of coming to Germany on their own. To satisfy the visitors s varying accommodation preferences, the IBZs offer apartments in different sizes and at different rates. Scientists staying at the IBZ Adlershof can either rent a room in one of the two shared apartments or, should they prefer single occupancy, choose from eleven oneroom apartments, four two-room apartments, or one three-room apartment. The IBZ Köpenick, slightly smaller in size but compensating with its idyllic location on the banks of the Dahme River, offers eight one-room and eight two-room apartments. All flats are fully furnished and are rented out over periods varying between three months and two years. The IBZ Adlershof comprises a third block which is reserved for the most part to accomodate researchers with the BESSY (Berliner Elektronenspeicherring-Gesellschaft für Synchrotronstrahlung mbh). Its vicinity to the research facility allows international research groups who visit BESSY to use synchrotron radiation for their experiments to make optimal use of their allocated time slots. The block has sixteen apartments providing a total of 32 beds. To make visiting scientists and their families feel at home in Adlershof and to create a pleasant work environment for the local staff as well, IGAFA organizes a wide variety of cultural, social and sport activities. In doing so, it facilitates the smooth integration of the guests into Adlershof's scientific community and provides a forum that enables them to establish a personal relation with Adlershof, Berlin, and Germany. IGAFA is glad to assist visitors in finding the right school for their children, a good physician, or a suitable German language course. Social rooms with fully furnished kitchens host a multitude of official and private events, organized by the research institutions as well as the visiting scientists. TV lounges with modern media equipment invite guests to watch videos together in the evenings. The little ones find a small children's playground with swings and sandboxes for their entertainment outside. Inside, the play room holds everything that a child's heart desires. Rental bicycles are available for a small fee. They are an ideal means to save time going to work or to enjoy oneself exploring the city and its surroundings. Goal: New sources laser in Solid State Laser and ultrafast laser. Max-Born Institute is a very wellknown institution in the laser and optics world. I know this institute due to my collaboration with several groups in the same area. Finally, I decided to join Prof. Hertel s group. Simon Rivier, 26, single, Swiss and British citizen (born in Bristol, UK) I have finished my studies at the Swiss Polytechnic School of Lausanne (EPFL), Switzerland, in 2003 where I obtained a Master in Technical Science in Microtechnics Engineering with a specialization in Applied Photonics. I have done my diploma project at the Institute for Biomedical Imaging, Optics, and Engineering (BIO-E) where I worked in the field of optical analysis of active Ti:sapphire channel waveguides as broadband source for optical coherent tomography. I wanted to continue my researches in the same field as my diploma work and my diploma supervisor strongly recommended me to apply at the Max-Born-Institut in Adlershof. Therefore, I applied in this institute and I am now working towards the PhD degree in the MBI. Dr. Sargis Ter-Avetisyan, 45, married, Armenian Institute for Physical Research Armenian National Academy of Science. Doing experimental research in Armenia has become very difficult since the collapse of the Soviet Union. Equipment has become very difficult to procure. So, I applied for a job in Max-Born-Institute because the research topic was very close to that which I did in Armenia. How does your work here differ from the working situation at home? What do you particularly miss in your private surroundings (besides your family, friends and language)? What do you personally expect from your stay in Adlershof? What do you like most about Berlin and Germany? No, it is very similar. Many things: Swimming pool, cinema, music, museums I have to wait and see. I like Berlin better than other cities in Germany. Berlin is really different. I know many cities in this country but only Berlin offers everything. The diploma work that I performed in the EPFL was really a part of my studies. Now, I really have the feeling that I am working and studying here. Apart from that, the working system is quite similar. The Swiss Mountains of course!!!! Skiing, snowboarding in the weekend. I expect to perform very exiting research in physics as well as to enjoy the lifestyle in Berlin. I also expect to take advantage of the possibilities offered by such a big city in terms of culture and entertainment. Moreover, it is a big chance for me to improve my German. In Berlin, I have the feeling that there is still a big freedom that doesn t exist in a lot of cities and particularly in Switzerland. There is also this huge variety of people, way of life, and project which makes it very interesting for me. First I would mention the high level of organisation, the equipment available and easy access to all necessary scientific information and literature. The living style of the people is different. To have good experiences at a very high scientific level. Mostly, I like to work here, because that can be very efficient. For how long are you planning to stay here? The two next years. I am planning to stay here at least for three years, till the end of my PhD. However, it may last a bit longer. My research here is very interesting for me and we have got many interesting experimental results, which have to be investigated further. It would be a pity if my contract is stopped due to the so-called five year regulation law. Due to your experiences, how would you like to alter the German way of working and living? I think only little changes, because bigger changes will change Germans to Spaniards, and this is not the issue. Actually, the way of working and living here is not so different compared to the French part of Switzerland. I am quite happy with the quality of life that I have here in Berlin. However the organisation of the work is quite different in Italy and Germany: here the planning, also in the long term, plays a great role. Furthermore, Germans typically devote more attention to details and formalities: from seminar timing to the preparation of posters or viewgraphs. But I like this attitude since it denotes attention towards the audience. Another big difference between Italian and German researchers lies in the amount of coffee they drink every day: two espresso in Italy (max 20 cc) against half litre in Germany! Well, I would like to propose some changes in the way the long time meetings are organised. In life, frankly speaking, I feel quite sorry for young kids drinking alcohol & smoking without any restrictions. Well, I wish and strongly hope to be back with my PhD degree. Memories of my happy moments and struggles with the course and with a touching good bye to very adorable friends & admirable colleagues over here. No changes to the way of working. But I do not like people taking more beer, wine (alcoholic drinks) and smoking (especially ladies). I personally feel it would be good if people avoid taking these things. I would like to take the things I learned in my subject and the results I have obtained here in my research back to my home land. Apart from my research, back home I will remember the moments I enjoyed in Deutschland, visiting places and especially weekends spent happily after working all week. How does your work here differ from the working situation at home? Here I am working on very advanced technology and new materials which will take a bit more time to be fully established in my own country. ACA is a specialized Institute for catalysis with a potential group of working scientists. It has a good infrastructure to study the catalytic processes and catalyst properties. Hence I had an opportunity to work with eminent people in my field. What do you particularly miss in your private surroundings (besides your family, friends and language)? Good question But I guess beside family, friends & language, I do not miss anything else. I am quite happy with the private surroundings. I have been attracted to Adlershof by the unique combination of a COLTRIMS detector and a high repetition rate intense femtosecond laser at MBI. Yes. How does your work here differ from the working situation at home? Structural genomics projects are currently developing the methods and technology to solve about structures per year. I was involved here with high throughput synchrotron data collection, structure solution and structure directed functional genomics. Research facilities are excellent. How does your work here differ from the working situation at home? What do you particularly miss in your private surroundings (besides your family, friends and language)? Yes because of the unique availability of the detector and laser in the same laboratory (and the corresponding expertise). Professionally, the Adlershof environment is quite satisfactory. The relative proximity of downtown Berlin compensates for the lack of certain facilities (like bookstores or entertainment). What do you particularly miss in your private surroundings (besides your family, friends and language)? What do you personally expect from your stay in Adlershof? What do you like most about Berlin and Germany? Due to your experiences, how would you like to alter the German way of working and living? Our culture, festivals, weather, drinking water, sports (cricket) and games (caram). During my stay, I have achieved what I wanted. My research work was published in BESSY annual report as SCIENTIFIC HIGHLIGHTS 2002 p I have solved several medically related protein structures in semi-automated high-throughput fashion and published in peer reviewed journals. Our most favourite place in Berlin is Pergamon museum and we like the transportation system and healthcare. Nil. What do you personally expect from your stay in Adlershof? Lack of foreigner integration in society to make a foreigner feel at home when he is abroad. But I feel the situation is improving day by day in Germany. National Technical University of Ukraine Kyiv Polytechnic Institute Research of heat mass transfer processes in superconductive heat transfer devices so called heat pipes, development on the basis of this knowledge the new generation of heat transfer and heat exchange equipment for space and terrestrial applications. With German colleagues joint scientific research in the field of space thermal control. Co-operation started 15 years ago. DFG, DAAD and DLR are supporting the collaboration and mutual research activity. My actual visit deals with a project for bilateral co-operation in science and technology, supported by the International Bureau of German BMBF and Ukrainian Ministry of Education and Science. I am planning to be in Adlershof during October and partly in December What do you like most about Berlin and Germany? Due to your experiences, how would you like to alter the German way of working and living? Which result do you take home with you? Cultural activities and the multicultural society in Berlin, and the discipline and security in Germany. I think it s already pretty good but maybe if I remember my first few days in Germany I would like to have more information in English, for example in local traffic information, announcments and displays for regular passengers at stations, Online banking websites etc. It s specially a problem in Berlin for new foreigners. The situation is much better in Munich for example. As a Capital city I think Berlin should take more steps. One more thing, I think the bureaucracy is a little bit more complex in Germany than in other developed countries. A lot. That was a very small expression and perhaps not clear enough. Well, I will take all my experiences from Germany, including academic and research experiences. Besides those, experiences of an independent life without my family and with few friends, which is completely different from at home. There are a lot of things which I have learned here in everyday life. They can be small things but none of them are of less value. Moreover I will take a diary with me which is full of sweet memories. I came to know lots of new people here, I made new friends, I travelled a lot, I learned new sports like ice skating and a lot more How does your work here differ from the working situation at home? I expect to successfully execute the joint scientific work, to collect the materials to prepare the scientific paper, to renew old contacts and establish new contacts with German scientists. Das ACA wurde 1994 gegründet und betreibt anwendungsorientierte Grundlagenforschung und angewandte Forschung auf den Gebieten heterogene Katalyse, Reaktionstechnik und innovative Materialentwicklung. Es gehört zu den international führenden Forschungseinrichtungen im Bereich der heterogenen Katalyse und deckt den gesamten Systemansatz von der Durchführung katalytischer Reaktionen bis zur Entwicklung und Charakterisierung von Katalysatoren sowie zur Ermittlung reaktionstechnischer Lösungen ab. Das Ziel des ACA ist, die Lücke zwischen Grundlagenforschung und industrieller Forschung zu schließen. ACA belongs to the international leading research institutes in the field of heterogeneous catalysis. With its concept of applied research ACA covers completely all aspects of heterogeneous catalysis from synthesis of catalytic material to catalytic reaction engineering and characterization in a unique way. ACA s objective is to bridge the gap between basic and industrial research. ACA is application-oriented but has strong competencies in basic research. Therefore it acts as a connecting link between universities and Max-Planck-Institutes on the one hand and companies on the other hand. Research of ACA accelerates transferring knowledge from basic research into knowledge for innovations. ACA is held in great scientific esteem and is often contacted by industrial customers because of the high relevance of its research for applications. Using ACA s research results in chemical industry catalysts and catalytic process stages will be improved. Selectivities and yields of target products will be increased while decreasing the amount of by-products and waste. This also ensures substantial savings in raw materials and energy. This supports sustainability in chemical industry and related branches. Catalytic Processes Catalysts and catalytic processes are developed at ACA for synthesis of refinery and fine chemicals, intermediates and basic materials for pharmaceuticals. Further fields of this research topic are renewable energies, cleaning up exhaust gases and waste waters as well as waste treatment. Development of advanced materials Center of this research topic is the scientific development of new catalysts and materials starting from catalytic active material to industrial catalysts. New strategies for synthesis are developed, and known systems of materials are optimized. Reaction engineering and catalytic mechanisms For an efficient development of processes and materials ACA has specialized in high throughput experimentation. High throughput technology will be combined with in situ methods. An objective is the development and application of methods, processes and apparatus that contribute to an acceleration in developing catalytic stages or in improving existing ones. A scientific understanding of catalytic mechanisms becomes possible using spectroscopic in situ measurements and transient experiments. At the moment ACA has 75 co-workers. 45 among them are scientists: chemists, physicists and mathematicians. In addition there are 20 engineers, technicians and laboratory assistants. ACA competes successfully in getting publicly funded and private projects. More than 25 % of ACA s 8 million Euro budget is income from industry. 18 Probenaufbereitung für zertifiziertes Referenzmaterial Preparing a certified reference material Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und -prüfung Federal German Institute for Materials Research and Testing Die Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und -prüfung (BAM) arbeitet für die öffentlich-technische Sicherheit in Deutschland. Als Bundesoberbehörde im Geschäftsbereich des Bundesministeriums für Wirtschaft und Arbeit (BMWA) ist sie Teil der technisch-wissenschaftlichen Infrastruktur der Bundesrepublik Deutschland. Unter der Leitlinie Sicherheit und Zuverlässigkeit in Chemie- und Materialtechnik ist die BAM zuständig für die Zuverlässigkeit der Analytischen Chemie und die technische Sicherheit vieler Bereiche der Chemie, des Umweltschutzes und des Transportwesens. Arbeitsschwerpunkte der Abteilung I Analytische Chemie; Referenzmaterialien Zuverlässigkeit chemischer Analysen setzt die Rückführbarkeit auf nachvollziehbare Verfahren und stoffliche Realisierungen der gesuchten Merkmalswerte voraus, die höchsten analytischen Anforderungen genügen. Daraus erwächst die Aufgabe, Referenzverfahren zur Validierung von praxisrelevanten analytischen Verfahren zu entwickeln, adäquate Referenzstandards bereitzustellen und durch Normung und Regelsetzung Sorge dafür zu tragen, dass die Anwendung dieser Verfahren und Materialien Akzeptanz auf breiter Basis findet. Der Abteilung Analytische Chemie; Referenzmaterialien der BAM steht dazu ein breites Spektrum analytischer Methoden zur Verfügung. Sie ist mit modernen Analysegeräten ausgerüstet und besitzt erfahrene Analytiker, insbesondere in den Schwerpunktbereichen Spurenanalytik, Präzisionsanalytik von Hauptkomponenten, Strukturanalytik, Charakterisierung der Morphologie von Stoffen sowie lokalisierte Spektroskopie. Diese Aufgabenstellungen werden von der Abteilung I Analytische Chemie; Referenzmaterialien der BAM bearbeitet, die zum überwiegenden Teil ihren Sitz in Berlin-Adlershof hat. Weitere Abteilungen der BAM, die vorrangig in Berlin Steglitz-Zehlendorf angesiedelt sind, betreiben ebenfalls Laboratorien und Einrichtungen in Berlin-Adlershof. Arbeitsschwerpunkte der Fachgruppe IV.2 Umweltrelevante Material- und Produkteigenschaften Der Arbeitsbereich Umwelteinflüsse und Schädigungsmechanismen der Fachgruppe IV.2 Umweltrelevante Material- und Produkteigenschaften klärt umweltbedingten Schädigungen an Materialien und Produkten auf und entwickelt neuartige Materialschutz- und Restaurierungsmethoden. Apparativ stehen dabei u.a. eine Mikrosonde und ein Environmental Scanning Electron Microscope (ESEM, siehe Bild) mit wellenlängenbzw. energiedispersiver Elementanalysemöglichkeit zur Verfügung. Der Arbeitsbereich verfügt weiterhin über drei Klimaprüfschränke in denen zur Durchführung von Schädigungssimulationen an Materialien neben Luftfeuchte und Temperatur auch die Zusammensetzung der Atmosphäre (z. B. durch NOx, SO2 und H2S) variiert werden können. Arbeitsschwerpunkte der Fachgruppe IV.3 Abfallbehandlung und Altlastensanierung in Adlershof: Untersuchungen zum Einsatz thermochemischer Methoden der Stofftrennung bei kontaminierten anorganischen Abfällen und speziellen Rohstoffen haben das Ziel das Gefahrenpotential zu verhindern und die möglichst weitgehende Verwertung der enthaltenen Komponenten zu ermöglichen. Dazu werden Reaktionen im schmelzflüssigen Zustand sowie Festkörperreaktionen (Lichtbogenofen, Drehrohrofen) ebenso ausgenutzt wie biotechnologische Verfahren (enzymatische Alkoholyse). Arbeitsschwerpunkt der Fachgruppe V.4 Werkstofftechnik der Hochleistungskeramik und Verbundwerkstoffe In engem Zusammenhang mit innovativen Werkstofftechnologien und Anwendungen keramischer und glasiger Werkstoffe betreibt, entwickelt und validiert die Fachgruppe V.4 prozess- und fertigungsbegleitend die Prozess- und Prüftechnik für Keramikbauteile mit verbesserter Sicherheit und Zuverlässigkeit. Die Ausstattung erlaubt die Herstellung glasig-kristalliner Werkstoffe von der konventionellen Glasschmelze, der Sol-Gel Synthese, über das Dip- und Spincoating dünner Schichten bis hin zur Herstellung keramischer Folien (Bild) und Mehrlagensubstrate (Low Temperature Cofired Ceramics) sowie die Charakterisierung und Bewertung von Volumen- und Oberflächendefekten solcher Schichtverbunde. Focus of Department I Analytical Chemistry; Reference Materials Certainty of chemical analysis requires their traceability to accurate measurement procedures and reference materials. They have specified properties and comply to the best analytical standards. BAM therefore develops reference procedures for the validation of relevant analytical measurements and provides reference materials. By cooperation with standardization bodies and regulating authorities BAM enhances the broad acceptance of these procedures and reference materials. The experienced staff of BAM s department Analytical Chemistry; Reference Materials have at their disposal a wide variety of modern analytical equipment in particular in the areas trace analysis, precision analysis of main constituents, structural analysis, characterization of the substances morphology, and space-resolved spectroscopy. The laboratories of Department I are mainly localized at BAM s site in Berlin Adlershof. The other departments of BAM and the administration are located in Berlin Steglitz-Zehlendorf. But some are also present in Adlershof with several working groups. Focus of Division IV.2 Environmental Material and Product Properties The working area Environmental Impact and Damage Analysis of Division IV.2 investigates how materials and products are damaged by the environment and develops novel concepts for materials protection and restoration. The technical equipment comprises e.g. an electron probe microanalysis and an environmental electron microscope (ESEM, cf. picture). In three environmental chambers damage processes are simulated by varying the composition of the atmosphere (NOx, SO2 and H2S) apart from temperature and moisture. Focus of Division IV.3 Waste Treatment and Remedial Engineering Thermochemical methods for the separation of contaminated organic and inorganic waste material and particular raw materials are investigated. The goal is to reduce the hazards from the materials and make further use of their constituents. The procedures vary from treatment in melts and solid state reactions (arc furnace, rotary kiln) to biotechnological processes(solvolysis, alcoholysis). Focus of Division V.4 Materials Technology of Advanced Ceramics and Composites Innovative materials technologies and their application to crystalline and glassy ceramics are at the center of the division s work. For improved safety and reliability it develops and validates process control and testing techniques of ceramic parts. Sie kann auf einen Brennfleck von ca. 150x150 µm 2 fokussiert werden und wird z. Focus of the competence group BAMline The first hard X-ray beamline (BAMline) at BESSY GmbH provides high flux monochromatic radiation with photon energies from 5 kev up to 80 kev and a minimal focus of 150 x 50 µm 2 for X-ray fluorescence analysis, micro-computed tomography, X-ray topography, detector calibration and reflectometry. It is applied to the investigation of light weight high performance composite materials, ceramic and fibre reinforced components as well as structural properties and highly integrated electronic circuits. Derzeit steht die Entwicklung eines Freie Elektronen Lasers für den Spektralbereich von 20 ev bis 1 kev im Zentrum der Aktivitäten. Schwerpunkte bei der Nutzung der Synchrotronstrahlung bilden die Untersuchung von Clustern, Nanostrukturen und zur Magnetisierungsdynamik dünner Schichten, sowie methodische Entwicklungen zur elastischen und inelastischen Streuung mit kohärenten Photonen. Weiterhin betreibt BESSY in Kooperation mit der TU Berlin das Anwenderzentrum für Mikrotechnik zur Entwicklung und Herstellung miniaturisierter Bauteile mit Hilfe von Synchrotronstrahlung. Key project at present is a free electron laser for the spectral range of 20 ev to 1 kev. Further research focuses on molecular clusters, nanostructures, dynamics of magnetization, and on methodology of coherent photon scattering. In cooperation with TU Berlin, BESSY operates the Application Center for Micro-engineering, a facility to develop and fabricate micro components. BESSY cooperates with several universities and research institutes, mainly via activities in the BMBF networks of competence micro technology, optical technology, surface treatment and biochips. Internationally, BESSY collaborates with numerous research centers in Europe within the EU framework programs and with leading synchrotron and accelerator labs world-wide.
