3 Learning Skills Arbeitsblatt 4.3 Understanding longer German sentences High frequency words are the important little words which you need for saying all kinds of things in German. Learning and remembering them makes it much easier to start understanding difficult sentences. When you see a long sentence in German with new language in it, there will probably be little words in it that you already understand. A Circle any little words that you already understand in these two sentences. Der freundliche riefträger spielt gern Schach. Der sehr unfreundliche riefträger spielt nicht gern Schach. With the help of the words on the right, try to translate the two sentences into English. riefträger = postman Schach = chess Do the two sentences mean the same thing? Which little words make a big difference to the meaning? Use the punctuation in a long German sentence to break it down into easier chunks. 1 Draw lines (where you see punctuation marks) to show how you could break this sentence into easier chunks, before trying to understand it. Die Zeitschrift ist sehr bunt, aber ziemlich langweilig und auch teuer, finde ich. 2 Circle any words in the sentence that you recognise. 3 Now have a go at translating the sentence, one chunk at a time remember that word order is sometimes different in German. 4 Grammatik 4 Arbeitsblatt 4.4 Freizeit Questions You can ask questions in German starting with a verb. To form them, just swap around the verb and the subject (the person doing the action). Statement: Du gehst reiten. (You go riding.) Question: Gehst du reiten? (Do you go riding?) Try to alter your intonation and make your voice go up a little at the end of the question, to make it sound different from a statement. A Turn these statements into questions. eispiel: Du spielst Tennis. Spielst du Tennis? 1 Du gehst schwimmen. 2 Er hört Musik. 3 Sie spielt gern Fußball. 4 Du liest gern ein uch. 5 Sie wohnt in Oxford. Have you noticed anything about what the answers to this type of question will be? C Now make up questions using these verbs. 7 Modal verbs Grammatik Arbeitsblatt 4.7 Modal verbs is the name given to a few very useful verbs which all follow a special pattern. So far, you have learnt ich kann (I can), ich mag (I like) and ich (I would like). A ich du Modal verb endings are different from regular verbs.
