2 Background Sustainable Tourism in Germany Tourism destination development worldwide is increasingly guided by the principle of sustainable development. So it is in Germany, where sustainable tourism has been a subject of debate for about 30 years. In the past, policymakers, destinations and companies have taken a variety of steps to make tourism development in Germany more sustainable. 9 Understanding & Importance of Sustainable Tourism From the list below, please select five terms that you associate most with sustainable tourism. Kurz & Knapp Lokale Wertschöpfung (67%), Ressourceneffizienz (55%), kulturelle Identität (54%) und Produktqualität (51%) sind die Begriffe, die am ehesten mit Nachhaltigem Tourismus in Verbindung gebracht werden. Nur 28% gaben an, dass der Nachhaltige Tourismus weder momentan noch in Zukunft eine herausragende Rolle für die Tourismusentwicklung der eigenen Destination spielen wird. 18 Responsibility for & Commitment to Sustainable Tourism How committed, would you say, the actors in your destination are to sustainable tourism? Kurz & Knapp Tourismusverbände und Marketinggesellschaften (65%) zeigen derzeit mit Abstand das höchste Engagement im Bereich Nachhaltiger Tourismus, gefolgt von lokalen touristischen Vereinen/ Verbänden (41%) sowie der Kommunalpolitik (35%). Gerade mal jede vierte Destination attestiert der Hotellerie (24%), lediglich 16% der Gastronomie und nur je 11% den Reiseveranstaltern und lokalen Transportunternehmen entsprechendes Engagement in Richtung Nachhaltigkeit. 18 A Study on Sustainable Tourism in German Tourism Destinations

High implementation performance Kurz & Knapp Die Destinationen engagieren sich derzeit vor allem für den Erhalt und die Förderung von Traditionen, Brauchtum und kultureller Identität sowie den Schutz und die verantwortungsvolle Nutzung kultureller Sehenswürdigkeiten und Attraktionen. Aber auch Maßnahmen zur Stärkung der lokalen und regionalen Wertschöpfung durch Tourismus sowie zum Schutz und nachhaltigen Nutzung von Naturräumen werden von einer Mehrheit der Destinationen bereits durchgeführt. 20 A Study on Sustainable Tourism in German Tourism Destinations

21 Implementation of Sustainable Tourism on the Destination Level Which of the following activities have involved strong commitment to the promotion and/or implementation of sustainable tourism? Mid to low implementation performance Kurz & Knapp Jede vierte Destination bindet ihre Gäste aktiv in die Umsetzung von Maßnahmen für einen Nachhaltigen Tourismus ein und rund jede Fünfte beteiligt ihre Bürger an der Tourismusplanung. Lediglich 17% der Destinationen engagieren sich bereits intensiv für die Zertifizierung touristischer Unternehmen und gerade mal jede Zehnte für die Einführung von Umwelt- und Sozialstandards. Need for Action: Education and Training Kurz & Knapp Den größten Handlungsbedarf auf Bundesebene sehen die Destinationen bei der Integration des Themas Nachhaltigkeit in die berufliche Tourismusausbildung (94%) sowie bei der Bereitstellung von Weiterbildungs- und Qualifizierungsangeboten im Bereich Nachhaltiger Tourismus (92%). 24 A Study on Sustainable Tourism in German Tourism Destinations

25 Sustainable Tourism: Need for Action on the National Level How would you rate the need to act in each of the following areas in order to strengthen the promotion and/or implementation of sustainable tourism in Germany? Need for Action: Financing Kurz & Knapp Neben Aus- und Weiterbildung wird auch der Finanzierung von Nachhaltigkeitsmaßnahmen hohe Priorität eingeräumt. Vor allem mehr staatliche Anreize für private Investitionen (92%), ein verbesserter Zugang zu EU-Förderprogrammen (90%) sowie nationale Förderprogramme für Nachhaltigen Tourismus (89%) werden als notwendig erachtet. Need for Action: Awareness Raising Kurz & Knapp Maßnahmen zur Bewusstseinsbildung bei privaten (92%) und staatlichen (87%) Tourismusakteuren wird im Verhältnis mehr Bedeutung beigemessen als bei Verbrauchern/ Gästen (82%). 26 A Study on Sustainable Tourism in German Tourism Destinations

27 Sustainable Tourism: Need for Action on the National Level How would you rate the need to act in each of the following areas in order to strengthen the promotion and/or implementation of sustainable tourism in Germany? Need for Action: Standards and Certifications Kurz & Knapp Mehr als drei Viertel der Destinationen (78%) sprechen sich für die Schaffung verbindlicher Umwelt- und Sozialstandards im Tourismus auf Bundesebene aus. Verbindlichen Umwelt- und Sozialstandards wird auf Bundesebene ein höherer Handlungsbedarf als der verstärkten Einführung freiwilliger Standards durch Unternehmen (65%) beigemessen. Im Vergleich zu Standards kommt sowohl der Zertifizierung von Unternehmen (59%) als auch der von Destinationen (53%) eine geringere Bedeutung zu. 27 A Study on Sustainable Tourism in German Tourism Destinations

29 Sustainable Tourism: Need for Action on the Destination Level Kurz & Knapp In which of the following areas, would you say, there is (still) urgent need to act in order to promote and/or implement sustainable tourism? Den größten Handlungsbedarf auf Destinationsebene sehen die Destinationen bei der Bereitstellung von Weiterbildungs- und Qualifizierungsangeboten im Bereich Nachhaltiger Tourismus. Die Einführung von Monitoringsystemen, Vermarktung sowie Maßnahmen zu Klimaschutz und -anpassung werden ebenfalls als wichtige Handlungsfelder für die Zukunft angesehen. 32 Conclusions The results show: as far as tourism in Germany is concerned, sustainability is a subject that can no longer be ignored! Kurz & Knapp Am Thema Nachhaltigkeit führt im Deutschlandtourismus kein Weg mehr vorbei! The German tourism destinations have a clear and comprehensive understanding of what sustainable tourism means. Sustainability does not yet play a major role for German tourism destinations, but in their own view, this is going to change significantly in the next few years. On the whole, there is believed to be urgent need to act with regard to the implementation of sustainable tourism. There have been some achievements, but there is still a lot to do. It is believed that policymakers should bear most of the responsibility for sustainable tourism development in Germany. 32 A Study on Sustainable Tourism in German Tourism Destinations
