1 Training Coaching Mentoring for Humboldt Graduate School Members, Postdocs, Individual Doctoral Candidates and Students, who are interested in a PhD January 2015 December 2015

2 Welcome to Humboldt Graduate School The aim of the Humboldt Graduate School is to provide young researchers with an excellent framework for their work by offering a broad and comprehensive education. Our offers are primarily designed for doctoral candidates of our member programs. Doctoral candidates of Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin who are not a member of Humboldt Graduate School, are also welcome to participate last minute. With our offers we intend to support young researchers in managing their dissertation project, enhancing key competencies and defining career goals. The Excellence Initiative enabled us to enlarge our program of workshops that are open to all doctoral candidates of Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin and free of charge. Those cover topics that mainly support the doctoral process. We also have special offers for postdoctoral researchers but they should feel free to participate in workshops that are announced to doctoral candidates in their third year of PhD studies. New is that some offers are provided on demand. These will be scheduled if a sufficient number of interested doctoral candidates and postdocs request it. In the knowledge that providing good care is required for a successful doctorate, the Humboldt Graduate School also provides supervisors the opportunity to professionalize for this demanding task. Let yourself be inspired by our brochure to join the appropriate workshop. Should you have special wishes or suggestions, we will be happy to respond. 3 Willkommen an der Humboldt Graduate School Aufgabe der Humboldt Graduate School ist es, Promovierenden der Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin einen ausgezeichneten Rahmen für ihre Arbeit sowie ein vielfältiges und überfachliches Programm zu bieten. Die Auswahl an Schlüsselqualifikationsangeboten richtet sich wesentlich an unsere Mitglieder der strukturierten Promotionsprogramme. Darüber hinaus besteht auch für Doktorand/innen, die keinem Mitgliedsprogramm angehören, die Möglichkeit, im Rahmen des Last Minute-Verfahren kostenfrei an Veranstaltungen der Humboldt Graduate School teilzunehmen. Im Rahmen der Exzellenzinitiative wurde das Programm, das für alle Doktorand/ innen der Humboldt-Universität offen und kostenfrei ist, erweitert. Im Fokus der Open to all Angebote stehen Themen, die grundlegend den Promotionsprozess unterstützen. Für Postdoktorand/innen bieten wir Veranstaltungen an, die speziell auf die Bedürfnisse dieser Zielgruppe zugeschnitten sind. Darüber hinaus können sie auch Veranstaltungen für Doktorand/innen im dritten Jahr ihrer Promotion besuchen. Neu werden Workshops on demand angeboten. Diese werden dann terminiert, wenn eine ausreichend große Anzahl von Interessenten Bedarf anmeldet. In dem Wissen, dass für eine erfolgreiche Promotion in erster Linie eine gute Betreuung erforderlich ist, bietet die Humboldt Graduate School auch den Betreuerinnen und Betreuern die Möglichkeit, sich für diese anspruchsvolle Aufgabe zu professionalisieren. 10 Our Offers Our event program at Humboldt Graduate School enables you to update and develop your skills. Our Transferable Skills Training is divided into different sections. SCIENCE SKILLS TRAINING (SC) This section promotes the professional competence of young researchers. Events in this category focus on communication with media and scientifi c presentation of research results in written and oral forms. MANAGEMENT SKILLS TRAINING (MA) These interdisciplinary events are aimed at widening your personal career opportunities. Therefore we offer training in project and event management, management of personal knowledge as well as media training for researchers. CAREER PLANNING (CA) Holding a PhD is a big step towards an academic career. To manage this step successfully, we support you with workshops giving an overview on current trends of research career development in Europe and job application practice. As networking is important for your own career we encourage you to exchange experiences with colleagues in our workshops and lectures. COACHING (CO) We provide workshops on time- and selfmanagement to make sure you get support on organizing your dissertation. In addition to these workshops, you can also take advantage of our individual coaching. MENTORING Mentoring is useful if you already want to gain some insights in your favored professional fi eld. It helps you to get in touch with people from academia as well as economy. CONFLICT CONSULTATION Highly trained external mediators offer counseling, coaching or mediation for strained or conflictual relationships in the context of your doctoral studies. The sessions will take place away from daily workplace and are fully confi dential. SUPERVISOR In the knowledge that providing good care is required for a successful doctorate, the Humboldt Graduate School also provides supervisors the opportunity to professionalize for this demanding task. Dabei bieten wir Vorträge zu Forschungstrends auf dem Europäischen Markt an und bereiten Sie auf den Bewerbungsprozess vor. Das Netzwerken ist ein wichtiger Faktor in der Vorbereitung des persönlichen Karrierepfads. Unsere Workshops und Vorträge bieten Ihnen die Möglichkeit zum Austausch mit Kollegen. COACHING (CO) Oftmals ist es nützlich und hilfreich Unterstützung bezogen auf das eigene Selbst- und auch Zeitmanagement zu erhalten. Wir bieten sowohl Workshops als auch Einzelcoachings an, um Sie bestmöglich in diesen Bereichen fi t zu machen. Erfolgsteams sind eine wirksame Methode der gegenseitigen Unterstützung. 18 SUSTAINABLE TIME-MANAGEMENT WITH SELF-COACHING (INTERDISCIPLINARY) SELF-MANAGEMENT FOR THE WRITING PROCESS PART I & II (NATURAL/ LIFE SCIENCES) Trainer: Date: Target Group: Dr. María Machón & Candidates in all years of PhD studies Trainer: Date: Target Group: Dr. María Machón Part I: / & Part II: / Candidates in the 1 st or 2 nd year of PhD studies Time-management is not something static: it needs constant course correction to match your current situation, especially during a PhD. In this training you learn not only principles and techniques of time-management, but also selfcoaching tools that make this constant course correction possible. The goal: to approach your time-management issues in a solution-oriented manner. We first discuss the basics of self-coaching and start practicing right away. We discuss working habits, task-management systems, office organization and more. We analyze time thieves like procrastination, perfectionism, and interruptions. We approach the topic of timemanagement step by step: looking at long-term planning, medium-term planning, and your day-by-day working schedule. At the end of the workshop you will have a clear idea of self-coaching, the transferable skill par excellence that can be applied to all areas of your life. You will have specific ideas for solving your time-management challenges. Combining self-coaching and a whole toolbox of timemanagement principles and techniques, you will approach future challenges in a pragmatic, goal-oriented way. This is not a writing course of the conventional kind. Our focus is on you, the writer, and on your self-management during the writing process: How to motivate yourself to write? How to feel well during the writing process? How to make decisions and plans you can stick to? How to get your writing projects done in time? During the one-day workshop we explore these questions in a relaxed and open atmosphere. We analyze your approach to your writing projects and find pragmatic alternatives for the areas that need improvement. With help of scientifically proven methods you will find and activate your own motivation to write. You learn how to harness your creativity and your inner critic to your advantage. Typical problems like procrastination, writer s block or a lack of confidence in your results are discussed. In a follow-up session we discuss practical problems found during the implementation phase. We reflect on what went well and what additional fine tuning is needed. You leave the course with clear goals and renewed motivation. What about selecting and reporting a very unusual result as being representative of the data? How should I react if I have the suspicion that scientists in my laboratory environment are behaving badly? In our seminar we will discuss the topics listed below. My ultimate goal for this seminar is to sensitize you to the issue of good scientific practice, and explore what it means for your own work. It is therefore essential that participants receive not only verbal feedback from the trainer and each other, but also see themselves presenting on video. CONTENT Assess own presentation strengths and weaknesses and try out new/more successful communication strategies where appropriate Identify the main design rules of effective slide presentations Build on and practice the English phrases of presentation Develop strategies for dealing with unexpected or difficult situations, e.g. answering questions, technical problems, audience management Develop confidence and enjoyment in public speaking Do you have difficulties getting certain things done? Do you sometimes wonder why you run around the whole day and still feel like you got nothing done? Do some of your to dos just wander from list to list? This program is for those of us who tend to leave things for later, to not get started until the deadline looms threateningly over our heads. In this program you actually get things done. We won t only talk about the whys and design strategies : you are actually going to work on your to dos and get them off the list. The core of the program is the get it done session, a special kind of coworking designed to improve your focus and motivation. An introductory 1-day time-management workshop includes the first practical get it done session and lets you experience the method and understand why it works. Besides, you learn techniques to improve your performance between the sessions. During two more virtual get it done sessions (you participate from your office or home) you keep working on your projects while practicing the techniques until they feel like second nature. In the final follow-up we discuss what went well and what still needs to be improved. We work through all topics and wishes of the participants with group coaching. Yet conferences play a crucial role in their future career. It s the goal of this workshop to help younger conference participants to increase both confidence and personal skills and to significantly decrease the stress factor. PART I: PRESENTING AT CONFERENCES CONTENT refining one s own talk or presentation they have prepared in advance, giving the presentation, and using body language influentially and with success. Alongside these aspects, participants develop a solid foundation so that they can prepare and give talks that are both professional and authentic. The first step is to discover personal speaking and body language behavior patterns. Participants learn how best to form and present their presentations. They will heighten their own self-perception, and finally, set concrete goals in areas that need improvement. PART II: COMMUNICATING AT CONFERENCES CONTENT Communication in professional forums is often decisive for future career options. This workshop helps participants to meet people with an attitude that is both adequate and self-confident, in informal situations ( socials ) as well as in academic discussion settings. Both verbal and non-verbal strategies will be considered. Participants will learn: how to identify players, roles and goals in conference settings, how to play the rules of the game, how to initiate and encourage small talk, how to talk to decision-makers, how to build and maintain professional contacts and how to act self-confidently in discussion settings (plenary, sessions).
