6 Clara Schumann Leipzig Music City of Music with World Class It is precisely 800 years ago that the Augustine Monastery of St. Thomas was founded and with it St. Thomas Boys Choir, the oldest cultural asset in the musical city of Leipzig. Naturally this is cause for great celebration throughout the whole year! The worldrenowned St. Thomas Boys Choir feels an obligation to look after Bach s legacy, after all the great Baroque Master was St. Thomas Choirmaster for 7 years in Leipzig. You can also discover more about J. S. Bach and his works in the Bach Museum, directly opposite St. Thomas Church. Follow the Leipzig Music Trail created to highlight the tradition of music in the city of Leipzig to learn more about the other genuine workplaces of major composers, like the Mendelssohn House or the Schumann House. 7 In 0, the THOMANA, comprising St. Thomas Boys Choir, St. Thomas Church and St. Thomas School, will be celebrating its 800 th centenary anniversary. Commissions have been awarded to celebrated composers, like Hans Werner Henze or Brett Dean, for the cycle of celebratory motets in the anniversary year. The week of celebration of the St. Thomas Boys Choir (9 th th March 0) begins with the opening of a special exhibition in the Museum of City History. Highlights include the International Boys Choir with the Regensburg Cathedral Choir Meeting, King s College Choir Cambridge and the Dresden Kreuzchor, as well as the opening ceremony on 0 th March 0 in St. Thomas Church. 8 Leipzig Shopping and Historic City Centre Shopping Paradise with Flair It quickly becomes clear when strolling through Leipzig s centre: here yesterday combines with today in an impressive way. Historic buildings of the most varying architectural styles Renaissance, Bar - oque, Art Nouveau and Postmodernism are strung together in the heart of the city. Is there a more beautiful atmosphere to again indulge lavishly while shopping? At any rate, the department stores, bou - tiques and restaurants leave nothing to be desired. The hustle and bustle is also traditional. After all, Leipzig is one of the world s oldest trade fair and commercial centres. In the GDR era, the cabaret theatre critically and politically satirised the workers state and the peasant state. In the last 0 years further stages and revue theatres have opened. The annual highlight in the cabaret world is the LACHMESSE in October, Germany s biggest cabaret and small arts festival. One of Germany s largest civic art collections can be seen at the Museum of Fine Arts: it encompasses paintings from old masters as well as works by Max Klinger and the well-known Leipzig School represented by Werner Tübke, Wolfgang Mattheuer and also the New School such as Neo Rauch. You can also experience spectacular art treasures at the GRASSI Museum. The many galleries, the F/Stop Photography Festival and the tradition-rich Academy of Visual Arts, which consistently generates young talent, offer considerable room for contemporary creation. And not to be forgotten: the former cotton mill Spinnerei in Plagwitz. Numerous gal - leries as well as more than 00 artists have settled here since the 990 s. With a bit of luck you will even personally meet internationally celebrated greats of the New Leipzig School such as Neo Rauch or Tilo Baumgärtel.

14 Leipzig Historic Highlights History and Stories It was not just Goethe who praised his Leipzig; others, like Schiller, Nietzsche or Erich Kästner, were also inspired here, although Napoleon was some what less enthusiastic about the city, as his army was defeated here in 8 in the Battle of the Nations, the decisive defeat in the Napoleonic Wars. Today the Monument to the Battle of the Nations commemorates what was the largest battle in Europe up to the World Wars. The city has also made a name for itself as a centre of knowledge and science: the first daily newspaper worldwide was published in 60 in Leipzig, Reclam founded his Universal Library in the 9 th century and Germany s second-oldest university has again and again spawned great scholars and academics, including the philosopher Leibniz or the Nobel Prize winner for Physics Werner Heisenberg. What s more: did you know that the German Football Association was founded in this trade fair city and that the first national football champions of Germany came from here? Leipzig s past never fails to surprise again and again.

15 Peaceful Revolution The citizens of Leipzig have played a decisive role in the course of inter-german history. What began as Monday prayers for peace in St. Nicholas Church, led on 9 th October 989 to a major demonstration on the Leipzig inner ring road: 70,000 protesters called for freedom of expression, freedom of assembly and freedom of travel and chanted We are the people. That was the beginning of the end of the GDR. Today the 9 th October is celebrated as the Day of the Peaceful Revolution, a civic remembrance day that begins every year with the Festival of Lights. 18 Leipzig Day Trips Broaden Your Horizons! No limits are placed on the pleasure of exploration: So set off into the Leipzig environs the Leipzig New Lakeland area. The former opencast mining landscape has been meanwhile transformed into a lake district where swimming enthusiasts and water sports fans get their money s worth. Halle (Saale) should also not be ignored: The nearby city of Handel s birth entices with art and culture, for instance in the Francke Foundations or the Moritzburg. An excursion from Leipzig into the beautiful Burgenland region and the wine-growing regions along the Saale river are also worthwhile. Or visit Wittenberg and experience the history of the Reformation up close. No matter whether it is the former residential city Torgau, the cradle of the German Classic Weimar, the Saxon state capital Dresden or the porcelain city Meißen, you can quickly arrive at your destination from Leipzig. 19 On the Trail of Lignite Overburden conveyor gantries, excavators, power plants or briquette factories the industrial architecture in Leipzig s southern mining district is still very much in evidence. The majority of the open-cast mines have now been closed and much of the land has been re-cultivated for many years.
