2 Brandenburger Tor Das Brandenburger Tor steht am Pariser Platz in Berlin. Es ist ein bekanntes Wahrzeichen und nationales Symbol. Mit ihm sind viele wichtige Ereignisse der Geschichte Berlins, Deutschlands, Europas und der Welt des 20. Jahrhunderts verbunden. Es wurde vom preußischen König Friedrich Wilhelm II. in Auftrag gegeben und nach Entwürfen von Carl Gotthard Langhans zwischen 1788 und 1791 errichtet. Als Vorbild dienten ihm die Propyläen und der Parthenon-Tempel zur Akropolis in Athen. Das Brandenburger Tor ist 26 Meter hoch, 65,5 Meter breit und 11 Meter tief. Es ist ein frühklassizistischer Natursteinbau aus Elbsandstein, der von der Berliner Steinmetzfirma Zeidler & Wimmel aufgebaut wurde. Das Tor besteht aus je sechs dorischen Säulen auf beiden Seiten, die fünf Durchfahrten bilden. Die mittlere der fünf Tordurchfahrten ist etwas breiter und war bis zum 9. November 1918 einzig Mitgliedern der königlichen Familie vorbehalten. Zu beiden Seiten des Tores befanden sich zuerst Torhäuser für die militärische Wache und den Steuereinnehmer ersetzte sie der Schinkel-Schüler Heinrich Strack durch offene Säulenhallen, deren Gestaltung er dem Tor anglich. Die geflügelte Siegesgöttin Viktoria krönt das Tor. Sie lenkt einen von vier Pferden gezogenen Wagen (Quadriga) in die Stadt hinein und blickt dabei nach Osten in Richtung Stadtschloss. Die aus Kupfer getriebene Skulptur ist etwa fünf Meter hoch. Sie wurde nach einem Entwurf von Schadow durch den Hofkupferschmied Wilhelm Ernst Emanuel Jury ausgeführt. Im Jahr 1806 verlor Preußen die Schlacht bei Jena und Auerstedt. Napoleon marschierte in Berlin siegreich ein und nahm die Quadriga als Kriegsbeute nach Paris mit verlor Napoleon gegen die Alliierten und die Quadriga kehrte nach Berlin zurück. Schinkel ersetzte daraufhin die Lorbeerkranztrophäe der Friedensbringerin durch ein eichenlaubumkränztes und vom preußischen Königsadler bekröntes Eisernes Kreuz. Er verwandelte so die Friedensbringerin in die Siegesgöttin Viktoria. 2

3 The Brandenburg Gate The Brandenburg Gate is situated close to Pariser Platz Square in Berlin. A world-famous landmark and national symbol, it is inseparably associated with major events in the history of Berlin, Germany, Europe and world of the 20th century. Commissioned by King Friedrich Wilhelm II and built according to the plans of architect Carl Gotthard Langhans between 1788 and 1791, the Brandenburg Gate was modelled after the Propylaeum and the Parthenon Temple located on the site of the Acropolis in Athens. The Brandenburg Gate rises to a height of 26 metres, is 65.5 metres wide and reveals a depth of 11 metres. It is an early neoclassical natural-stone structure constructed of sandstone quarried at the Elbe River Valley and was executed by the Berlin stonemasons Zeidler & Wimmel. 3

4 1933 feierten die Nationalszialisten mit einem Fackelumzug der SA durch das Brandenburger Tor ihre Machtergreifung. Nach dem 2. Weltkrieg wurde Berlin aufgeteilt. Das Zentrum der Stadt gehörte von nun an zum sowjetischen Sektor, der am Brandenburger Tor an den britischen Sektor grenzte. Die Sowjets schlossen das Brandenburger Tor nach einigen Demonstrationen gegen den Bau der Mauer am 14. August Das Tor blieb bis zum Mauerfall am 22. Dezember 1989 geschlossen. An diesem Tag wurden Ost- und Westberlin wieder vereint und das Tor wieder geöffnet. Das Brandenburger Tor war stark beschädigt und wurde zwischen 2000 und 2002 durch die Stiftung Denkmalschutz Berlin umfassend saniert. Das Tor gilt heute als Symbol der deutschen Einheit und ist eines der berühmtesten Wahrzeichen Europas. 4

5 The Gate comprises six Doric columns arranged on either side forming five passageways, the central one being somewhat wider than the other four. Up to November 9, 1918, this was expressly reserved for the members of the Royal Family. Gatehouses were situated on both sides of the Gate. These were originally intended for the military guards and were subsequently occupied by tax collectors. In 1868 Heinrich Strack - who had studied architecture with Karl Friedrich Schinkel - replaced the gatehouses by open porticos, designing these in alignment with the style of the Gate. Victoria, the winged Goddess of Victory, crowns the Brandenburg Gate. She is seen steering a chariot into the City drawn by four horses (Quadriga), her view directed towards the east in the direction of Berlin s City Palace. The five metre high copper sculpture was created by the Court Coppersmith Wilhelm Ernst Emanuel Jury according to a design supplied by Johann Gottfried Schadow. In 1806 Prussia was defeated in the Battle of Jena and Auerstedt when Napoleon s troops triumphantly entered Berlin and took the Quadriga as plunder back to Paris with them. When Napoleon lost the war against the allied forces in 1814, the Quadriga was restored to Berlin, whereupon Schinkel replaced the laurel wreath trophy borne by the Goddess by a wreath of oak leaves and equipped her with the Prussian eagle together with an iron cross, thus transforming the peace-bringer into Victoria, the Goddess of Victory. In 1933 the National Socialists celebrated their seizure of power with a torchlight procession organised by the storm detachment of the NSDAP, passing through the Brandenburg Gate. After the Second World War, Berlin was divided into occupation zones. The City Centre now belonged to the Soviet Sector, bordering on the British Sector at the Brandenburg Gate. Following demonstrations against the building of the Berlin wall, the Soviets responded by closing the Brandenburg Gate on August 14, The Gate remained closed until the wall finally came down on December 22, This was the day when East and West Berlin were reunited and the Brandenburg Gate was reopened. The Gate was found to have sustained severe damage and extensive renovation work was carried out between 2000 and 2002, financed from funds provided by the Berlin Monument Conservation Foundation. Today, the Gate represents the symbol of German Reunification and is one of the most famous landmarks in Europe. 5
