According to the Austrian Statistical Office, road vehicles to the value of 6.78 billion Euros have already been exported in the first 8 months of The automotive sector as a whole achieved a turnover of EUR 20 billion in 2003 and thus enjoys the undisputed first place in the list of Austria's industrial sectors. This position is the result of exceptional achievements in research, engineering and production. High technical standards, expertise and flexibility are just some of the strengths of the Austrian companies. Apart from a number of major companies it is primarily the small and medium-sized enterprises that constitute the back bone of this sector of Austria's economy and offer rapid customer-focussed solutions. This edition of Austria Export presents the Austrian automotive industry in its entirety for the first time. Around 700 firms - i.e. every Austrian automotive supplier - introduce their services and production range over the following pages. Walter oren irector of AUSTRIAN TRAE A country which does not have its own make of car and yet possesses a flourishing supplier industry has had to rely on courage, commitment and expertise to achieve what it is today one of Europe's leading automotive producers. Some 700 companies with 170,000 employees supply the whole world with vehicle parts, engines, fully assembled vehicles and of course knowhow. The most recent annual statistics show that approx. 1.9 million engines and transmissions were manufactured, 133,000 cars assembled and 53,000 motorcycles and 11,000 agricultural machines produced. In addition 100,000 bicycles were manufactured, as well as numerous vehicle bodies, forklift trucks and special vehicles such as piste-grooming machines for winter sports areas or fire extinguishing vehicles for many of the world's airports. Austria's automotive products and services have a presence on every continent. In recent months the automotive supply industry has again shown itself to be a driving force for exports in the Austrian economy. Car supplies boomed between January and August 2004 and achieved an impressive increase of nearly 45 %. Germany remains our main customer in this sector. Slovakia, our Eastern neighbour and the youngest member of the EU, provides an example of a new market where production will very soon amount to around 800,000 cars per year. The VW Group already has a production plant in Bratislava and Peugeot/ Citroén and ia are set to join them in the near future. China is a growth market par excellence for Austria's supply industry. There are many joint venture possibilities and these also offer Austrian automotive suppliers an opportunity to produce locally for major car makers such as Audi. New business opportunities are also developing in Iran. A reasonably priced Renault car for the growth markets in Eastern Europe, the Middle East and North and South America is to go into production there in NAFTA represents an important market for Austria's automotive industry. The USA and Mexico with their large automobile production plants are amongst the Austrian supply industry's best customers. austrian trade (awo) is part of the official representative of the Austrian business community's interests - the Austrian Federal Economic Chamber - and supports all Austrian companies with its network of 99 trade commissions and marketing offices in 60 countries. austrian trade (awo) provides information about export markets and presents Austrian companies abroad. Motoren und Getriebe hergestellt, PW assembliert sowie Motorräder und landwirtschaftliche Maschinen produziert. arüber hinaus werden Fahrräder, eine Vielzahl von Fahrzeugaufbauten, Gabelstapler und Spezialfahrzeuge wie Pistengeräte für Wintersportgebiete oder öschfahrzeuge für viele Flughafen der Welt erzeugt. Mit automotiven Produkten und ienstleistungen ist Österreich auch auf allen ontinenten präsent. Gerade in den letzten Monaten erwies sich die Autozulieferbranche wiederum als Exportmotor der österreichischen Wirtschaft. Von Jänner bis August 2004 boomten die fz-zulieferungen und konnten eine beachtliche Steigerung um nahezu 45 % vorweisen. eutschland ist nach wie vor in diesem Bereich unser Hauptabnehmer. Ein Beispiel für einen neuen Markt ist unser östliches Nachbarland und jüngstes EU-Mitglied Slowakei, dort werden sehr bald jährlich rund Autos produziert werden. Bereits jetzt besitzt der VW-onzern eine Fabrikationsstätte in Bratislava, Peugeot/Citroén und ia werden demnächst folgen. China ist für Österreichs Zulieferindustrie ein Wachstumsmarkt par excellence. ie Joint- Venture-Möglichkeiten sind groß und bieten auch österreichischen fz-zulieferbetrieben die Chance, vor Ort für große Autofabrikanten, z.b. Audi, zu produzieren. Neue Geschäftschancen eröffnen sich auch im Iran. Ein preiswerter Wagen von Renault für die wachsenden Märkte in Osteuropa, dem mittleren Osten, für Nordamerika und Südamerika soll dort ab 2006 produziert werden. Einen bedeutenden Absatzmarkt für Österreichs automotive Wirtschaft stellt die NAFTA dar, wo vor allem USA und Mexiko mit großen fz-produktionsstätten zu den besten unden der österreichischen Zulieferindustrie zählen. However, acstyria does not take the time to rest on the achievements so far. With a total of 44,000 employees, who generate an annual turnover of EUR 6.8 billion, the acstyria is an important European player in the automotive industry. acstyria has decided on a new strategic orientation in order to cope with the EU enlargement and the permanently growing demands of the world market and to secure an internationally leading role. The direction for the automotive industry in Styria is clearly predetermined. We have to and we want to develop into the globally acknowledged centre of excellence, describes acstyria s managing director Uwe Galler the goals of Strategie 2011 (strategy 2011). Ambitious goal: until the year 2011 Styria should develop into an intellectual impulse centre concerning mobility. In order to realise this goal, six strategic levers have been defined on the basis of the current situation in the automotive sector: focus on technology, extension of competencies, internationalization, Automotive Academy Styria, acstyria future workshop, and focussed marketing. interlinked training as key to success The essential key task is the establishment of the region as an automotive training centre: existing training programmes will be interlinked via the virtual Automotive Academy. In order to offer all professions, age groups and hierarchy levels an attractive training and further education programme, the range will be completed by practically oriented and trendsetting modules. The foundation of the Automotive Future Workshop Styria, which is to play the role of an internationally acknowledged mastermind and which should concentrate on the future of mobility and the consequences for the automotive industry, is one more pillar. the network becomes bigger The EU enlargement and investments in new production sites in middle and east Europe have put Styria in the centre of the European automotive industry. Mr. Galler describes acstyria as an essential carrier of a transnational automotive region south-eastern Europe. But the future markets do not only lie in Europe, the Asiatic market will gain in importance as well. acstyria will have to become more complete and competent in order to cope with this development, says Galler. The strengths so far lie in the development and production of drive-lines and complete vehicles in small to medium amounts; the technical focus is on conventional materials and production processes. In the future, the sectors of suspension, interior design and exterior will gain more importance. Additional focus: electronics, telematics, sensor technology, actuator technology, and the use of new materials and development methods. Possible execution scenarios are based on an intensified cooperation between universities and research facilities as well as the increased integration of small to medium-sized companies by new business models. Hoped-for result until 2007: a growth of the companies at the site, which will be 30% above the west European average in this industry as well as a duplication of the present business volume of the acstyria member companies on new target markets. 12 austriaexport 108

In particular, the innovation potential of small and medium sized companies is supported and promoted.
