12 Name of Module: Communication Networks and Technologies Person responsible for Module: Wolisz P(ECTS): 12 Secr.: T 5 Module Description Short Name: MET-KS2-KN&Tech.W12 address: wolisz@tkn.tu-berlin.de 1. Qualification Aims The main objective of this module is to provide students with the ability to understand and improve the design and functionality of modern communication networks The course is principally designed to impart: technical skills: 20%, method skills: 10%, system skills: 50% and social skills: 20% 2. Content Network Technologies Project: A project assignment is to be solved by a team of two up to four students. The work is to be planned and documented and the results (also intermediary) are to be presented. The topics are taken from current research activities of the TKN group. Performance Evaluation of Computer Communication Systems: The success of computer and communication systems strongly depends on their performance, typically reflected in the perception of service quality. Optimizing system performance, subject to a set of resource and cost constraints, is thus a critical design goal for system engineers. Performance evaluation allows us to quantify the service delivered by systems as well as the usage of resources. The goal of this course is to introduce the field of system modeling and performance evaluation and its basic methods: measurements, simulation as well as analytical approaches. This course will contain in an integrated form: lectures, exercises as well as a small project assignment. Mobile Communication Systems: The goal of this lecture is twofold. Firstly, to provide an overview of the modern mobile communication systems. The overview will mainly scope on the mobile data transmission systems (especially WLAN), but also classical cellular networks, e.g., GSM, GPRS, UMTS will be revised. Secondly, the aspect of integration of these systems will be discussed, with many practical details on how the different technologies and solutions can be brought together in order to improve the overall service efficiency. A special attention will be put on problems with adjusting the individual mechanisms/solutions to work in a cooperative framework. High-speed Network Technologies: This lecture will introduce the principles of high-speed communication, also called Gigabit communication. Special attention will be put to the solutions based on the optical transmission, providing a broad overview from SONET to the concept of all-optical networks. This lecture will also discuss issues related to adjustment of the existing technologies to the high-speed networks (Gigabit Ethernet), as well as problems with the existing communication protocols (access, transport), overviewing the most important solutions nowadays. Networked Embedded Systems: The course focuses on network architectures and protocols for Networked Embedded Systems (NES). Embedded systems play an important role in many applications, such as industrial and building automation, automotive and avionic applications, etc. Many of these applications are critical and (hard) real-time, which puts specific constraints on the design of the underlying system software and communication protocols. Individual topics include energy-efficient MAC protocols for sensor networks, software frameworks for automotive applications (OSEK/VDX and AUTOSAR) and communication protocols for networked em-bedded systems in automotive (CAN and Flexray), industrial automation (PROFIBUS, FOUNDATION Fieldbus, Real-time Ethernet, PROFINET, HART and WirelessHART) and building automation (EIB/KNX, LON and BACNet).

15 Name of Module: Ad-hoc- and Sensor Networks Person Responsible for Module: Wolisz 1. Qualification Aims CP (ECTS) 6 Secr.: FT 5 Module Description Short Name: MINF-KS-AdhSN.W12 awo@ieee.org The goal of the module is to improve the student's understanding of the basic principles and technologies behind self-organizing wireless sensor networks, through a balanced combination of lectures and practical work with modern sensor node hardware. The module is principally designed to impart: 40% technical skills, 20% method skills, 30% system skills, and 10% social skills. 2. Content Lecture "Ad-hoc and Sensor Networks": Sensor networks differ from "traditional" wireless networks in several aspects, most importantly in their resource constrained nature. The sensor nodes are typically severely restricted in terms of memory, processing capacity and energy budget leading to the need for careful design of the node system software and protocol stack. These novel system solutions, driven by the specific nature of the sensor networks as a platform, are the focus of our interest in this course. Individual lecture units include: Introduction, application areas and system requirements; System architecture (node-level, network-level, software support); Protocol stack (physical layer, link layer, medium access control and routing); Services (addressing, topology control, time synchronization and localization). Lab Sensor Networks : The lab provides opportunity for gaining hands-on experience in working with state-of-the-art sensor networks hardware and software. Sensor nodes will be made available not only for in-class assignments but also for developing experiments at home. The lab consists of a "bootcamp" event and six additional sessions. In the "bootcamp" the TinyOS development toolchain is installed and tested with simple demo applications. The following lab sessions are devoted to particular aspects of sensor network hardware and software stack like sensing, actuation, IPv6-based networking, etc. The lab ends with group mini-project work. More information is available on the web page (see 12. Recommended Reading, Lecture Notes). 3. The module is principally designed to impart: Technical skills: 30% method skills: 10% system skills: 60% social skills: 0% 2. Content Lecture on Mobile communication systems: The goal of this lecture is twofold. Held in English language. Lecture on Ad-hoc- and sensor networks: Sensor networks differ from "traditional" wireless networks in several aspects, most importantly in their resource constrained nature. The sensor nodes are typically severely restricted in terms of memory, processing capacity and energy budget leading to the need for careful design of the node system software and protocol stack. These novel system solutions, driven by the specific nature of the sensor networks as a platform, are the focus of our interest in this course. Individual lecture units include: Introduction, application areas and system requirements; System architecture (node-level, network-level, software support); Protocol stack (physical layer, link layer, medium access control and routing); Services (addressing, topology control, time synchronization and localization).. Held in English language Lecture on High-speed Network Technologies: This lecture will introduce the principles of high-speed communication, also called Gigabit communication. Special attention will be put to the solutions based on the optical transmission, providing a broad overview from SONET to the concept of all-optical networks. This lecture will also discuss issues related to adjustment of the existing technologies to the highspeed networks (Gigabit Ethernet), as well as problems with the existing communication protocols (access, transport), overviewing the most important solutions nowadays. Held in English language Lecture on Networking for Multimedia: In this lecture the basic concepts of the multimedia communication in the current Internet will be given. The discussion will include voice, text, videoconference, as well as Instant-Messaging and IP-Telephony transmissions, and the most important protocols involved, e.g., SIP, H.323, ICQ, RTP, RTCP, RTSP. Moreover, an overview of the signaling protocols used for multimedia applications (e.g., VoIP, VoD, etc.) will be provided. Held in German language. Seminar on communication technologies: The seminar will discuss a huge variety of topics of students choice in the area of communication networks. Examples of topics from the previous course: - The energy consumption share of IT infrastructure becomes a significant part of the global energy consumption. We will discuss the energy consumption of individual parts of the networking infrastructure and discuss ways of its reduction. - Status of packet transport technologies how much of IP/MPLS, T-MPLS, PBT is actually implemented by carriers? Status of Access Network technologies how did the battle between EPON and GPON end? Status of service specific P2P overlays how do Joost, Skype, Bit-
