3 A Foreword In agreement with Mr. Thomas Poltrock from Continental testing was performed for the module in Germany / Contidrom. Behaviour in wet conditions All test rides were recorded with a 2D GPS system. For the tests, Continental provided a: Suzuki Bandit 1250 S ABS MTC provided a second, identical Suzuki Bandit 1250 S ABS As a spare motorcycle. Continental provided all tyres used for the dry tests in Calafat/Spain. In agreement with Mr. Thomas Poltrock air pressure was adjusted to: Front: 2,5 bar and Rear: 2,9 bar in cold condition. 4 A Foreword Additionally, a set of Bridgestone BT 023 were included in the test. These, however, had not been exposed to the thermal and mechanical loads in the dry tests in Spain and were only run-in for two laps on the dry handling course. Any deviation from the recorded behaviour in the wet is therefore possible. All tests were run with the Continental test motorcycle Suzuki Bandit 1250 S ABS modified from standard with: Wider handlebars Other footrests After-market slip-on silencer The test vehicle was inspected by the members of the Motorrad testing crew (MTC) and the chassis adjustments recorded. 7 B.2 Test evaluation The points sum total awarded by the test crew is 20. The 20- points system allows tyres of different designs and tyres intended for different purposes to be compared to one another. Example: Comparison between touring tyres and current sports or super sports tyres. B.3 Test riders The evaluation of the various pairings of tyres is done by two riders, who test and evaluate the tyres according to the same procedure and the uniform criteria formulated for the test see: item C. B.4 Weather conditions Under permanent irrigation and without undue traffic by other participants, the testing conditions were good to acceptable. Before the test, the test area was covered in leaves and small branches and had to be cleaned before testing could begin. This took place between 11:17 and about 12:35. During this time, no testing could take place. Apart from that, the tests were interrupted by occasional snow showers, which had no influence on the results of the tests. All tyres in this second stage were tested and evaluated in a serious and honest manner. The generally low temperatures were fairly constant and almost identical for all tested tyres, confirmed by the measurements of tyre temperatures. 8 B.5 Test equipment All test rides were recorded with the help of 2D data recording. These data support and confirm the subjective reports from the riders. A 2D data recording system was fitted to the motorcycle used for the tests, recording the following parameters: -> Speed over GPS Antenna type: AC-GPSANT > Acceleration/Deceleration -> Angle of lean over GPS, see above Neutral angle of lean The recorded values show the so-called neutral angle of lean. This figure indicates the angle of lean, calculated from speed and corner radius, without consideration for total centre of weight and the width of the tyres. In the case of the Suzuki Bandit 1250 S ABS the actual maximum angle of lean increases through these parameters by 6.1 degrees. 20 C Comments to the Motorrad test crew testing procedure C.1 Procedure for testing in the wet The behaviour is recorded and evaluated on a permanently irrigated test course. In wet conditions the rider is seated upright and will ride three timed laps on the limit of adhesion. The recorded lap times and the times in the various sections give information on the ability of the tyres in wet conditions. 25 Evaluation of tested tyres - Analysis and explanations of the achieved data Start- und finish line is on the fastest straight, where maximum speed is achieved. Therefore the time recorded for the last lap can also be used for the evaluation. Cornering speeds from corner 1 to corner 6 were recorded over a certain distance (in brackets) and should always be evaluated relative to the angle of lean achieved (second figure). Thereby it is obvious that tyres with exceptional good directional stability on the front (Michelin Pilot Road 2, Bridgestone BT 023) often achieve a lower cornering speed, as the line here can be made much tighter. Comparing cornering speed with the section times and the lap times, it is evident that tyres with a relatively bad directional stability, but with a wide range for the limit, (Dunlop Roadsmart, Metzeler Road Attack 2, Pirelli Angel ST) do run a high corner speed, but under-steer because of both tyres sliding and then come off the ideal line and are unable to post a good lap time. The opposite is true of the Bridgestone BT 023, which has much grip from the front, but only average from the rear and because of this loses corner speed. Instead, this tyre achieves good lap times thanks to its ability to hold tight lines in tight corners, hitting the apex perfectly and so achieve a quick line. 38 E Conclusion In a direct comparison with the other current tyres, the new Continental Road Attack 2 takes third place in the wet test with only one point less than the new Bridgestone BT 023. Through its neutral behaviour in corners, its light, exact handling and the easily-controlled limit range, the Continental Road Attack 2 gives a good feeling of safety from the first metre and leaves the competition, so close in the dry tests, Dunlop Roadsmart and Pirelli Angel S behind. The very low air and tarmac temperatures during the test demand all tyres to have not only good grip in the wet but also in cold temperatures. This explains why the proven Dunlop Roadsmart cannot exhibit its full ability under these conditions.
