Diese verlieren rapide an Bedeutung und werden durch die erheblich leistungsfähigeren USB und PCIe als Computer Schnittstellen ersetzt. Insbesondere USB wird laufend in Richtung höherer Datenraten weiterentwickelt. Diese Schnittstellen werden heute direkt auf den entsprechenden SoCs integriert. Für die professionelle Weitverkehrstechnik sind die international standardisierten Übertragungsarten ADSL (in verschiedenen Versionen)/VDSL für FTTX in Telecom Netzen und SHDSL für mehr allgemeine Anwendungen verfügbar. Powerline Kommunikation Die Powerline-Kommunikationstechnologie (PLC- Technologie) ermöglicht eine Vernetzung zur Übertragung von Daten über vorhandene Leitungen im Haus mit hoher Geschwindigkeit, dh mit Datenraten bis zu 650Mbit/s. Dabei ist die PLC-Technologie nicht auf die Kommunikation über das bestehende Stromnetz eines Hauses beschränkt. Sie läßt sich auf allen vorhandenen Kabeln anwenden und so lassen sich die Bereiche Türbedienung-, Telefonverkabelung, Koaxialkabel, TV-Verkabelung, elektrisches Stromnetz bzw. etwaige andere Arten von Zweidrahtverkabelungen für die Übertragung erschließen. Darüber hinaus können PLC-Technologieprodukte parallel zu allen anderen Anwendungen in diesem Verkabelungsnetz betrieben werden.
