2 BMC Health Services Research: scope is an open access, peer reviewed journal that considers articles on all aspects of health services research, including delivery of care, management of health services, assessment of healthcare needs, measurement of outcomes, allocation of healthcare resources, evaluation of different health markets and health services organizations, international comparative analysis of health systems, health economics and the impact of health policies and regulations.

4 BMC Health Services Research: Scope It is journal policy to publish work deemed by peer reviewers to be a coherent and sound addition to scientific knowledge and to put less emphasis on interest levels, provided that the research constitutes a useful contribution to the field.

5 The BMC series ethos We aim to be inclusive rather than exclusive and publish research deemed by peer review to be a coherent and sound addition to scientific knowledge. We have no limits to the number of articles we publish and want to facilitate the publication process for our authors.

6 The Executive Editor is responsible for assessing each manuscript submission to a journal in the BMC series to ensure it conforms to journal standards with respect to ethical requirements, data deposition, competing interests etc and that all necessary files are present. They are also responsible for assigning manuscripts to Section Editors and for developing the journal. Section Editors are external academic Editors. They will triage the manuscript and take responsibility to either A) continue the peer review process by appointing a suitable Associate Editor to handle the manuscript; B) reject the manuscript if it is not appropriate for the journal; or C) transfer the manuscript to another BMC series journal.

7 Associate Editors are external academic Editors. It is the responsibility of the Associate Editor to assess a manuscript further and to recommend either A) continue the peer review process by suggesting suitable reviewers (and acting as a reviewer themselves if possible and appropriate); B) reject the manuscript if it is not appropriate for the journal or C) transfer the manuscript to anotherbmc series journal. When the decision is passed to the author it will be signed by the handling Associate Editor.

8 Article processing charges An article processing charge of 1540 is payable for articles accepted for publication in BMC Health Services Research. If your institution, society or other organization is a member,this cost may be wholly or partly covered by the membership arrangement. If you are applying for an institutional membership payment, the submitting author must be affiliated with the member institution. Article processing charge waivers or discounts are granted on a case bycase basis to authors who lack funds. To apply for a waiver or discount, please request one during the submission process. A decision on the waiver will normally be made within two working days. Submission of the article to the journal can be completed once the payment method has been agreed. Any applicable article processing charge must be paid prior to publication.

9 Criteria Scope: Is the manuscript broadly in scope for the journal? Novelty: Is the manuscript reporting an advance? English: Is the manuscript written in acceptable English? If the written English of a manuscript needs substantial improvement due to issues with spelling, grammar or style, the Editorial Office will ask the authors to copyedit their manuscript. Ethics: Do you perceive any ethical problems with the manuscript?

10 Standards of reporting Does the manuscript adhere to relevant standards for deposition of data and reporting CONSORT ( reporting of clinical trials, PRISMA ( statement.org/) for reporting of Systematic reviews and metaanalyses and RATS ( for reporting qualitative research

11 MANUSCRIPT EVALUATION: First step 1. Do you agree the manuscript suitable to be sent for peer review? 2. Does the manuscript appear to present at least an incremental advance? 3. Are any ethical issues suitably addressed within the manuscript? 4. If any software or database is introduced in the manuscript, is it available for the reviewers to test? 5. Please declare any competing interests you have with this manuscript (including collaboration with any of the authors or working in a rival group).
