3 Carbon fabrics have been produced for technical application only in the last 30 years. The basic material of carbon fabrics is pure carbon the chemical element that diamonds consist of. Using a special process, carbon is moulded into finest fibres, with a diameter of to mm (3-5 thousandth part of a millimetre). To produce a carbon fabric, between 1,000 and 24,000 single fibres are combined into one bunch, wound on spools and woven into power looms. This brings about the unique properties of carbon fabrics their extreme tensile strength, low weight and resistance to chemicals and harsh temperatures. Carbon fiber compounds are half as light as aluminum and stronger than steel, which is why carbon use in the aerospace, as well as in the automotive industry, poses their significant market place in the future.
