I am pleased that you are going to continue your study of German and hope that I can help you achieve a reasonable mastery of German during the time allotted this semester. HU3284 and HU3285 are a continuation of your study of German language and of representative cultural features of the main German-speaking countries. HU3285 introduces students to German film, news and media. The film part of this course will use the book, German Through Film. We will view and discuss audiovisual and internet materials related to German film, news and media. During the entire course we will also try to apply newly learned skills by working in small groups (AGs= Arbeitsgruppen). There will be two regular homework assignments from the textbookessay assignments, one comparison final paper in English, five small group online discussions, two written reviews (in German; related to our readings and viewingss, and one oral presentation ( Referat ). Course Learning Objectives This course can be taken in lieu of UN1025 (Global Issues), as a general education course that fulfills the global literacy learning goal ( and towards fulfillment of the German Minor, the International German Minor or the ML Certificate. After having taken HU3284 and HU3285 (they do not have to be taken in this sequence) you should have improved your skills in order to: 1. feel comfortable in a German-speaking environment 2. have a thorough knowledge of German grammar and vocabulary 3. read German of an intermediate to advanced level of complexity 4. participate in discussions and skits 5. present your view on subjects of interest 6. be more familiar with cultural similarities and differences 7. write German texts like a personal letter, a journal, and short compositions All work in this course will stress the use of German as a means of communication. It must be made up by the close of the next semester or the grade becomes a failure (F). A (X) grade is computed into the grade point average as a (F) grade. Course Policies Attendance Attendance is required. Students who miss more than two classes without university-approved excuses will lower their final grade by half a grade; those who miss more than three will lower their grade by a full grade. There will be no passing grade for students who more than 30% of classes without universityapproved excuses. Excessive tardiness will also result in a grade reduction. Collaboration/Plagiarism Rules Specific course rules or policies regarding collaboration on graded academic exercises. Cell phones, Blackberries, ipods, PDAs, or any other electronic devices are not to be used in the classroom. Information exchanges on these devices during class are also prohibited and violate the Academic Integrity Code of Michigan Tech. University Policies Student work products (exams, essays, projects, etc.) may be used for purposes of university, program, or course assessment. All work used for assessment purposes will not include any individual student identification.
