3 Deutsche Gesellschaft für Säugetierkunde e.v. (German Society for Mammalian Biology) Dear DGS-members, friends and colleagues! The first month of the new year has already passed, and I hope that the rest of 2012 will develop into a good and successful year for all of you, as well as for our society. Those of you which attended our last annual meeting 2011 in Luxembourg will agree that it was a very likeable and inspiring conference. We heard and saw well over 60 oral and poster presentations, covering various aspects of mammal research. An extended review of the conference will be one of the topics of this newsletter. Meanwhile, the DGS board has started to set the stage for new activities in We are happy to announce that by invitation Dr. Robert Kraus, the 86 th Annual Meeting of the DGS will be held from 4 th - 8 th September 2012 at the Senckenberg Museum in Frankfurt a.m. You will find further details later in this newsletter. We are particularly delighted that 2011 brought in no less than 16 new members, which is quite an extraordinary increase. Some of them are established scientists (often from abroad), many are PhD-students, and one new member was born in 1996 and thus is probably the youngest member our society ever had! I do believe that this is a positive development, and we should try our best to make it last. Finally, I want to announce that the Fritz-Frank-Award will be offered again in Just like last year, it amounts to 3000 and is intended to promote excellent scientific work of young academics in the field of mammalian biology. Please send your application until 15 th April The winner will be invited to present her or his work at the next DGS meeting in Frankfurt. 4 85 th Annual Meeting of the German Society for Mammalian Biology (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Säugetierkunde e. V.) From 13 th to 17 th September 2011, the 85 th Annual Meeting of the German Society for Mammalian Biology (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Säugetierkunde e. V.) took place at the Bâtiment des Sciences, University of Luxembourg by invitation of Dr. Laurent Schley. 85 registered participants from 17 (!) nations attended the meeting, with some flying in from as far as Russia, Japan or the United States of America. This demonstrates once more that our society has become attractive for mammalogists all over Europe and even beyond. Keynote lectures were given by Professor Dr. Timothy J. Roper (University of Sussex; Urban mammals in Europe ) and Dr. Alessio Mortelliti (University of Rome; Habitat loss and fragmentation in relation to the conservation of European mammals ), both of which received much attention and applause. Altogether 35 talks and 32 posters were presented and discussed, covering a wide range of topics such as sensory biology, bioacoustics, life histories, ethology, population genetics, conservation and management of wildlife, ecology, and several more. Abstracts of all contributions were published in a special issue to volume 76 of Mammalian Biology. The poster awards, supported by ELSEVIER, were given to: 1) Eva Bärmann ( Gazella arabica lost and found? 2) Pascal Malkemper ( The dolphin cochlear nucleus ) and 3) Nathalie Smitz ( Inferring population structures of African buffalo (Syncerus caffer) by means of Single Nucleotide Polymorphism (SNP) markers ). Again, the DGS provided also an award for the best oral presentation of a young scientist. This year, it was shared by Patricia Graf ( The use of acceleration to code for animal behaviours; a case study with beavers (Castor spp.) ) and Tim Schikora ( The impact of climate on evolution and diversity of African antelopes ). Congratulations again to all prize winners! The accompanying program included an icebreaker party, a guided tour of Luxembourg-City as well as a guided visit of the National Museum of Natural History, all of which were very interesting. Last but not least, the conference dinner in a prize-winning restaurant in the heart of Luxembourg was delicious!

5 The organizing committee around Laurent Schley merits our gratitude for having provided excellent conditions and a warm and friendly, yet always concentrated and disciplined atmosphere. Besides the scientific program, they introduced us nicely into their beautiful city and its cultural and culinary delights. It was really worthwhile. Thanks again! 6 Protokoll der Mitgliederversammlung während der 85. Jahrestagung der Deutschen Gesellschaft für Säugetierkunde e.v. am 15. September 2011, Uhr bis Uhr Versammlungsleiter: Klaus Hackländer (1. Vorsitzender) Top 1: Begrüßung und Zustimmung zur Tagesordnung (K. Hackländer) Änderungsantrag Rempe; Begutachtung der Poster unter Top 11, einstimmig angenommen. Top 2: Bericht des Geschäftsführers (P. Dammann) Im April wurde Philip Dammann als Nachfolger von Andrea Mess, die beruflich nach Brasilien wechselte, Geschäftsführer der Gesellschaft. An der 84. Jahrestagung 2010 in Berlin nahmen 81 Personen teil. Es gab 35 Vorträge und 29 Poster. Von der Mammalian Biology erschienen 6 Hefte und 1 Supplement-Heft. Insgesamt wurden 636 Seiten gedruckt. Von den Beiträgen widmeten sich 34% den Rodentia, 33% den Carnivoren und 10% den Ungulaten. Thematisch betrafen die Beiträge zu 45% ökologische Themen, zu 23% phylogenetische und systematische Fragen und zu 11% Verhaltens- und Reproduktionsbiologie. Seit 2011 hat die Zeitschrift ein neues Format und Design (Größe & Foto auf dem Deckblatt). Insgesamt hat die Gesellschaft 406 Mitglieder. Im laufenden Jahr waren 16 neue Mitglieder und 13 Abgänge zu verzeichnen. Im laufenden Jahr war der Tod von 4 langjährigen Mitgliedern zu beklagen: Hildegard Aich-Schlott, Martin Berger, Simone Teelen und Günther Tembrock. Zu ihrem Gedenken erhob sich die Versammlung.

7 Top 3: Kassenbericht (S. Begall) Die Gesellschaft hat 406 Mitglieder, darunter 4 Ehrenmitglieder. Viele Jahresbeiträge werden per Bankeinzug gezahlt, so dass es kaum noch Außenstände gibt. Bei Einzahlungen mit Kreditkarten sind die Gebühren so hoch, dass über die Akzeptanz von Kreditkarten nachgedacht werden muss. Der Kontostand der Gesellschaft beläuft sich auf: Post-Girokonto: ,97, DB-Festzins-Konto: , 07 Der Gesamtbestand beträgt folglich ,04 Top 4: Bericht der Kassenprüfer (G. Peters) Die Kassenprüfer Hutterer und Peters heben in ihrem Bericht die gute Zusammenarbeit und Offenlegung aller Transaktionen hervor, haben keine Beanstandungen und empfehlen deshalb die Entlastung der Schatzmeisterin. Es wird beantragt, nicht nur die Schatzmeisterin, sondern den Gesamtvorstand zu entlasten. Die Entlastung des Gesamtvorstandes wird ohne Gegenstimme bei 8 Enthaltungen ausgesprochen. Im Anschluss an den Bericht der Kassenprüfer werden noch die Kosten der Zeitschrift diskutiert und vom Vorstand auf die gute Zusammenarbeit mit dem Verlag Elsevier, die z.t. vom Verlag getragene Vermehrung der Seiten der Einzelhefte sowie das neue Layout hingewiesen. Top 5: Wahl der Kassenprüfer für 2011 Bei 4 Enthaltungen werden die Herren Hutterer und Peters erneut zu Kassenprüfern für das Geschäftsjahr 2011 gewählt. Top 6: Jahresgebühren Einstimmig wird dem Vorschlag des Vorstandes zugestimmt, die Jahresgebühren für 2012 nicht zu erhöhen. Top 7: Für die nächste Jahrestagung (2012) liegt eine Einladung vom Senckenberg Institut Gelnhausen/Frankfurt, Main vor, die einstimmig angenommen wird. Für 2013 liegt eine Einladung von der Life Science University in Prag vor.

8 Top 8: Bericht zur Mammalian Biology (F. Zachos) Die Entwicklung der Zeitschrift ist positiv zu beurteilen. Das Editorial Board konnte nochmals erweitert und damit die Bearbeitungszeit für die MS verkürzt werden. Bis zum gingen dieses Jahr 172 Manuskripte ein. Durch die Umstellung des Heft-Formats und eine Volumenerweiterung der Hefte auf 100 Seiten sowie weitere 140, vom Verlag Elsevier gesponserte Seiten konnte die Zeit zwischen MS-Annahme und Druck erheblich verkürzt werden. Im Heft 6 erscheinen bereits Arbeiten aus dem Jahr Der Impact Factor der Zeitschrift liegt z.z. bei 1,26 (vergl. J. Mammalogy 1,54) und die Ablehnungsrate bei rund 70%. Top 9: Aktuelles aus Kommissionen und Study Groups Keine Wortmeldungen Top 10: Rempe) Vorschlag zur besseren Beurteilung der Posterpräsentationen (U. Herr Rempe legt einen Vorschlag vor, wie man die Qualität von Postern beurteilen kann und dabei alle Posterpräsentatoren in die Evaluierung mit einbeziehen kann (unabhängig von der Posterpreisermittlung durch die DGS). Das Organisatorenteam in Frankfurt überlegt, dieses Verfahren bei der nächsten Jahresversammlung zu testen. Top 11: Verschiedenes Da keine Wortmeldungen vorliegen, weist der Vorsitzende nochmals darauf hin, dass jeder neue Mitglieder für die Gesellschaft werben und junge Kollegen auf die bei DGS-Tagung vergebenen Preise hinweisen sollte. 9 F r i t z - F r a n k Award of the German Society for Mammalian Biology The German Society for Mammalian Biology (DEUTSCHE GESELLSCHAFT FÜR SÄUGETIERKUNDE e.v.) opens the competition for the FRITZ-FRANK- AWARD The award consists of 3,000 and is intended for promoting excellent scientific work in mammalian biology. Candidates may submit papers or doctoral theses published within the last three calendar years. At the time of publication the candidate must have been younger than 33 years. Suitable topics are phylogeny and systematics, biogeography, ethology, ecology, and population biology of mammals. Five copies of the respective publications or theses along with a curriculum vitae must be submitted until April 15 th 2012 to the managing secretary (Dr. Philip Dammann, Universitätsklinikum Essen, Zentrales Tierlaboratorium, Hufelandstr. 55, Essen; philip.dammann@uk-essen.de). A jury will decide upon the qualification of the candidates. F r i t z - F r a n k - F ö r d e r p r e i s der Deutschen Gesellschaft für Säugetierkunde e.v. Die Deutsche Gesellschaft für Säugetierkunde schreibt auch im Jahr 2012 wieder den mit 3000 dotierten Fritz-Frank-Förderpreis für hervorragende wissenschaftliche Leistungen auf dem Gebiet der Säugetierbiologie aus. Es können Publikationen oder Dissertationen aus den letzten drei Kalenderjahren, deren Verfasser/ Verfasserinnen zum Zeitpunkt des Erscheinens das 33. Lebensjahr noch nicht überschritten hatten, prämiert werden. Die Preisvergabe beschränkt sich auf Arbeiten aus den Fachgebieten Phylogenie und Systematik, Verbreitung, Ethologie, Ökologie und Populationsbiologie der Säugetiere. Sie sind aufgerufen, Ihre Bewerbungen oder Vorschläge zusammen mit 5 Exemplaren der betreffenden Publikation oder Dissertation bis zum 15. 10 86th Annual Conference of the German Society for Mammalian Biology (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Säugetierkunde e.v.) Frankfurt, 4th 8th September 2012 Leading motto: The past, present and future of mammalian diversity You are heartily invited to participate in the 86th Annual Meeting of the German Society for Mammalian Biology (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Säugetierkunde e.v.) hosted by the Senckenberg Research Institute and Natural History Museum and Biodiversity and Climate Research Centre (BIK-F), coordinated by the Conservation Genetics Group The Conference will take place at the Senckenberg Research Institute and Natural History Museum, Frankfurt (Germany). Registration for the Conference To register for the conference you have fill out the registration form at Early bird registration will end at June 11, Late registration will be possible until August 13, 2012 or till all places are filled. The number of participants is limited to 150 in total. In case more registrations are received, presenters of talks and posters will have priority but non-presenting participants can be put on a waiting list. Abstract submission The contribution of oral presentations or posters has to be indicated in the registration form by giving author names and title of contribution. This Alpine habitat provide fantastic views into the Alps and the pannonic plain. We will enjoy typical flora elements like edelweiss, gentian, alpine rose and might have the chance to meet European and mountain hares as well as other Alpine mammals such as chamois. Günther Tembrock ********************** Please find below a detailed obit for Elisabeth Kalko by her close colleague and DGS member Ivan Horacek: I am very sorry to disseminate the news so shattering for all bat researches throughout the World. Eli was undoubtedly one of the most remarkable personalities in our branch, full of innovating ideas and energy. Despite of her monumental achievements she was still young and ahead of a real peak of her career. For me personally, her death is indeed a very bad strike. I met Eli - then as an emerging star of European bat research - first some 30 years ago already at the beginning of her university study in Tuebingen. Later I even could assist at her first step at the international bat research auditorium at the 4th European Bat Research Symposium in Prague Sorrowfully, I obviously assisted also at her last meeting with the international bat research community at the 15th IBRC in Prague Perhaps none of its participants would expect that will meet Eli who with dozens of her lectures, symposia or opening addresses was as usual a key personality of the Conference never again. Eli was a wonderful woman, equipped with piercing intellect, yet combined with remarkable sense of humor, broadminded view of the world and extremelly friendly attitude to her surrounding. She was everytime ready to advise and help, and last but not least to demonstrate convincingly inspiring perspectives of our branch and unlimited attractiveness of its subject biology of bats. It is a very depressing and hard task to learn to use the past tense in connection with her. Nevertheless, not only her monumental scientific legacy but also vivid memories on meeting her will for sure keep her alive in our minds.
