It is responsible for the transformation of an inter nationally recognised manufacturer of metal components into the company it is today a producer of high-end lighting systems for public spaces. The people who work here are largely responsible for our becoming one of the pioneers in the industry within just a few years. Along with the management, over 50 full-time employees are dedicated to the most important goals of our traditional, family-owned company: high value, quality, reliability and durability. This is also a determining factor in the work we do in each of our four production segments. The lighting systems that we develop are the basis for holistic and well thought out solutions. Our curiosity, know-how and awareness of the interaction between space, light and surrounding objects also contribute to our unique and unusual solutions. These are then developed within projects that pose specific challenges, such as an unusual context, a desire for a certain effect to be produced by the light or material, a sensitive architectural context or narrowly defined technical requirements. ewoindividual was established to meet these sorts of challenges. We implement unique lighting systems for individual projects. In this context, we always try to rely on proven components from our standard collection, which have been optimised over the course of many years. This includes slightly modifying technical concepts as well as products that we have developed in the field of LED technology. A functional, precise and safe solution can be found at the heart of every unique ewoindividual scenario.

So wurde aus einer international ausgezeichneten metallverarbeitenden Manufaktur das heutige Unternehmen ein Hersteller von hochwertigen Lichtsystemen für den öffentlichen Raum. Dass wir uns innerhalb von wenigen Jahren zu einem Vorreiter der Branche entwickelten, hat viel mit den Menschen zu tun, die hier arbeiten. 17 What is important to you? e d i Light, in a form that corresponds with the require ments of a given concept: precisely illuminating the intended spot, rendered in forms and materials appropriate to the context. The priority is often placed on specific aspects when we develop ewoindividual solutions. 22 Project: Gradonna Mountain Resort, Kals Project year: / In a sustainable manner raw surfaces and warm light e d i The resort at the foot of the Grossglockner belongs to the Schultz Group, which plays a leading role in ski tourism. It consists of a hotel and 41 chalets arranged in loose order. Façades made of wooden shingles underline the harmonious relationship with the surrounding landscape; this building material, which is traditional in the Alps, is part of the sustainable architectural concept. The design for illuminating the pathways and driveways of the resort proposed by light designers from Lichtraum 2 in South Tyrol adheres to this concept in every detail: the colour and roughness of the posts made of rusted steel establish a connection to the harsh mountain landscape. In a multi-stage process, ewo treated the rolled steel supports until they revealed the desired characteristics and a uniform patina. The posts and pole lights at the entrances to the chalets and along the pathways are equipped with LED technology: guaranteeing a precisely measured level of illumination for the given area; energy consumption is minimised and light pollution is avoided. By modifying our lighting unit, we are able to generate light in a very warm, inviting colour: the lenses over the warm white LEDs are coated with a special ambercoloured-lacquer. Proven standard components from ewo are at the heart of this illumination scenario meant to emulate nature. However, in designing the surfaces and the colour of the luminaires we were able to make use of the experience that we have been able to gather since the days when we produced metal components though to our current work developing lighting technology. Das Ressort am Fuße des Großglockners gehört zu der im Skitourismus führenden Schultz- Gruppe, es besteht aus einem Hotel und 41 lose angeordneten Chalets. Fassaden aus Holzschindeln stellen einen harmonischen Bezug zur umgebenden Natur her; das traditionelle Bau material aus dem Alpenraum ist Teil des nachhaltigen architektonischen Konzeptes. Der Entwurf des Südtiroler Lichtdesign-Studios Lichtraum 2 für die Beleuchtung der Wege und Zufahrtsbereiche des Ressorts führt dieses Konzept bis ins Detail weiter: Stahlprofile aus rostendem Stahl schaffen mit ihrer Farbe und Oberfläche eine Verbindung zur umgebenden rauen Gebirgslandschaft. ewo behandelte die gewalzten Stahlträger in einem mehrstufigen Prozess, so dass sie von Anfang an die gewünschte charakteristische und einheitliche Patina aufwiesen. Die Poller- und Mastleuchten an den Eingangsbereichen der Chalets und an den Wegen sind mit der LED-Technik ausgestattet: Das garantiert die genau bemessene Ausleuchtung für den jeweiligen Bereich; der Energieverbrauch ist minimiert, Lichtverschmutzung tritt nicht auf. Mit einer Abwandlung unserer Lichteinheit erzeugen wir eine sehr warme, einladende Lichtfarbe: Die Linsen über den Warmweiß-LEDs werden mit einem speziellen, bernsteinfarbenen Lack überzogen. Im Kern der Beleuchtung für dieses naturnahe Szenario stehen somit bewährte Standardkomponenten von ewo. Bei der Gestaltung der Oberflächen und der Lichtfarbe jedoch griffen wir auf Erfahrungen zurück, die wir von unseren Ursprüngen in der Metallverarbeitung bis zur Entwicklung von Lichttechnologien gesammelt haben. Le facciate in scandole di legno sono in rapporto armonico con la natura circostante: il tradizionale materiale da costruzione dell'area alpina è parte integrante di questa visione architettonica sostenibile. Il progetto realizzato dallo studio altoatesino di light design Lichtraum 2 per l'illuminazione dei sentieri e delle aree di accesso del resort riprende questa idea fin nei minimi dettagli: il colore e la superficie dei profilati in acciaio ossidato si inseriscono perfettamente nell'aspro paesaggio montano. I sostegni in acciaio laminato realizzati da ewo sono stati trattati attraverso un processo in più fasi affinché presentassero fin da subito la caratteristica patina uniforme richiesta. Per i bollard e i lampioni nelle aree di accesso agli chalet e lungo i sentieri è stata utilizzata la tecnologia LED di ewo, che consente di illuminare con intensità precisa le diverse aree, riducendo al minimo il consumo energetico ed evitando l'inquinamento luminoso. Con lievi modifiche alla nostra unità di illuminazione abbiamo creato una luce dal colore molto caldo e gradevole. Le lenti applicate sui LED color bianco caldo sono rivestite di una vernice speciale color ambra. Il cuore dell'illuminazione per questo scenario naturale è quindi costituito dagli affidabili componenti standard di ewo. Per la creazione delle superfici e del colore della luce abbiamo comunque attinto sia all'esperienza delle nostre origini nella lavorazione dei metalli sia a quella nello sviluppo delle tecnologie di illuminazione.

28 Project: Storebrand Headquarters, Oslo Project year: / Reflection technologies light from above, maintenance in easy reach e d i The dark Scandinavian winters may have given rise to this desire: the financial company Storebrand envisioned a lighting system for the wide, high atrium of its Oslo headquarters that would shine like the sun. Vielleicht haben die dunklen skandinavischen Winter zu diesem Wunsch beigetragen: Für das weite, hohe Atrium des Osloer Firmensitzes stellte sich das Finanzunternehmen Storebrand ein Lichtsystem vor, das wie die Sonne scheint. I lunghi e bui inverni scandinavi hanno probabilmente ispirato l'idea alla base del progetto: per l'alto e spazioso atrio della sua sede di Oslo la società finanziaria Storebrand aveva immaginato un sistema di illuminazione che imitasse il sole. In implementing this project, thought was not only given to the direct effect but also to its long-term practicality. In order to avoid electrical installations and maintenance work on the high walls supporting the ceiling, the solution is based on eworeflect technology: reflective elements from the ewo product line were used to create a circular reflector measuring 2.5 metres in diameter. Nine projectors installed along the balustrade direct light at the reflective surface. Installation and maintenance work can thus be executed from an easily accessible position. The installation ensures a basic level of illumination in the interior of the building and simultaneously has a strong emotional impact. Our lighting technology makes this effect seem real: visitors and employees who enter the building and walk through the atrium experience the illusion of sunshine. Bei der Umsetzung dieses Vorhabens wurde nicht nur der unmittelbare Effekt, sondern auch die langfristige Praktikabilität mitgedacht. Um Elektroinstallationen und Wartungsarbeiten an der hohen Deckenwand zu vermeiden, basiert die Lösung auf der eworeflect-technologie: Spiegel elemente aus dem ewo-produktsortiment bilden den reflektierenden Rundkörper mit einem Durch messer von 2,5 Metern. Dieser wird von neun an der Brüstung angebrachten Werfern angestrahlt. Installations- und Wartungsarbeiten können somit an einer leicht zugänglichen Stelle durchgeführt werden. Die Installation stellt die Grundbeleuchtung des Gebäudeinneren sicher und sorgt gleichzeitig für ein starkes emotionales Bild. Unsere Lichttechnologie macht den Effekt real: Besucher_ innen und Mitarbeiter_innen, die das Gebäude betreten und das Atrium durchschreiten, erleben die Illusion einer Sonne. Nella realizzazione di questa idea si è pensato non solo all'effetto immediato, ma anche alla sua praticità nel tempo. Per evitare l'installazione dell'impianto elettrico sull'alto soffitto e conseguenti onerose manutenzioni, si è optato per una soluzione basata sulla tecnologia eworeflect: elementi a specchio della gamma di prodotti ewo costituiscono il corpo rotondo riflettente del diametro di 2,5 metri illuminato da nove proiettori montati sul parapetto. I lavori di installazione e manutenzione possono così essere eseguiti in una posizione facilmente accessibile. Il sistema fornisce l'illuminazione di base agli interni e regala al tempo stesso una forte impressione emotiva. La nostra tecnologia produce un effetto realistico: i visitatori e i collaboratori che entrano nell'edificio e attraversano l'atrio percepiscono l'illusione del sole.

34 Project: Campus, ETH Zurich Project year: / Experiencing the night between carefully placed spots of light e The Hönggerberg Campus of the ETH Zurich is a vital location for the sciences, one where researchers, students and visitors encounter one another and share knowledge, ideas and what is yet unknown. The light designer Reto Marty from Nachtaktiv also wanted to reflect this dynamism in the lighting concept: light of mini mum intensity distributed in small portions is arranged rhythmically along the paths and narrow streets winding around the hill. The reduced illumination provides for sufficient safety and orientation while increasing people s awareness of both light and darkness; the night is still clearly perceptible. The technology and the know-how needed to transform the design into a sensory experience were provided by ewo: by exactly targeting the surface that is to be illuminated, the amount of light required can be more precisely defined. The lighting fixtures are equipped with LED technology, thereby keeping light pollution to a minimum and barely interfering with nocturnal insects. Their energy consumption is as much as 90 per cent lower than for the previous system used to illuminate these pathways. In order to ensure that the luminaires not only fit into the night-time context harmoniously but also into the landscape of the Hönggerberg, ewo developed an entirely new series of pole, bollard and small bollard luminaires. d Der Campus Hönggerberg der ETH Zürich ist ein lebendiger Ort der Wissenschaft, hier begegnen sich Forschende, Studierende und Besucher_innen; Wissen, Ideen und das noch Unbekannte. Der Licht designer Reto Marty von Nachtaktiv wollte diese Dynamik auch in das Beleuchtungskonzept bringen: Eine insgesamt minimale Lichtintensi tät, aufgeteilt in kleine Lichtportionen wird zu einem Rhythmus entlang der Wege und kleinen Straßen um den Berg angeordnet. Die reduzierte Beleuchtung bietet ausreichend Sicherheit und Orientierung, dabei steigert sie aber die Aufmerksamkeit sowohl für das Licht als auch für die Dunkelheit, die Nacht bleibt deutlich wahrnehmbar. Die Technik und das Know-how, aus einem sol chen Entwurf ein sinnlich erfahrbares Szenario zu machen, kommen von ewo: Über die präzise Licht führung lässt sich die Lichtmenge und die Fläche, die von ihr beleuchtet wird, genau defi nieren. Die mit LED-Technologie ausgestatteten Leuchten reduzieren die Lichtver schmut zung auf ein Minimum und be - einträchtigen nachtaktive Insekten kaum. 39 i Il campus Hönggerberg dell'eth, il Politecnico federale di Zurigo, è un luogo pulsante di scienza, punto di incontro di ricercatori, studenti e visitatori, ma anche di conoscenze e di idee, comprese quelle ancora in nuce. Il light designer Reto Marty dello studio Nachtaktiv ha voluto esprimere questa dinamica nel progetto di illuminazione: la luce, con un'intensità ridotta al minimo e suddivisa in piccole "porzioni", è distribuita armoniosamente lungo i sentieri e le strade che corrono intorno alla collina. L'illuminazione ridotta è comunque sufficiente a garantire sicurezza e orientamento, eppure in questo modo mette in risalto sia la luce sia l'oscurità, lasciando inalterata la percezione della notte. ewo ha fornito la tecnologia e il know-how per trasformare un tale progetto in uno scenario esperibile con i sensi: grazie alla precisione di orientamento della luce è possibile definire con esattezza la quantità di luce e la superficie illuminata. I corpi illuminanti con tecnologia LED riducono al minimo l'inquinamento luminoso e la sua influenza sugli insetti notturni. Il consumo energetico è fino al 90 percento inferiore rispetto a quello del sistema di illuminazione precedente. Affinché i corpi illuminanti non solo fossero adatti allo scopo notturno, ma si inserissero armonicamente anche di giorno nell'area del campus, ewo ha sviluppato una serie di modelli completamente nuova composta da pali, bollard e colonnine luminosi. 42 Project: Square redesign Piazza Mazzini, Jesolo Project year: / Sculptures pointing beyond their location e A renewal programme for the beach, streets and piazzas of Jesolo on the Italian Adriatic Coast has been underway for several years now: the goal is to move from mass tourism to quality tourism, the entire town is to become more open and integrated into a single entity. Gustavo Carabajal from the Spanish architectural office Carlos Ferrater brought ewo in to help with the development of the Piazza Mazzini as a focal point in the town. As sculptures, our lighting systems underline the basic idea behind the project: they point beyond their actual location and emphasise the relationship between the town s interior areas and the sea. The realisation of these structures in steel represented a complex task: any object that combines dimensions of this size with aesthetic ambition requires high-quality craftsmanship; our skills guarantee a metal structure with precise dimensions clad in elements that fit to the exact millimetre. The lighting technology integrated into the sculpture functions just as carefully and precisely. The system is based on light beam image splitting, which noticeably reduces blinding. The illumination is very even, while the illuminated space is precisely delimited, an important factor in relation to adjacent buildings. Illuminated seating elements were also developed and produced for this project; their form and surface enter into a dialogue with the lighting systems. d Der Strand, die Straßen und Plätze von Jesolo an der italienischen Adriaküste befinden sich seit mehreren Jahren im Prozess einer grund legenden Erneuerung: Der Weg führt vom Massentourismus zum Qualitätstourismus, das gesamte Städtchen soll offener und zu einer urbanen Einheit geführt werden. Gustavo Carabajal vom spanischen Architektur studio Carlos Ferrater bezog ewo in die Entwicklung der Piazza Mazzini zu einem städtischen Mittel punkt ein. Als Skulpturen unterstützen unsere Lichtsysteme den Grundgedanken des Projektes: Sie weisen über ihren Standort hinaus und schaffen einen Bezug vom Inneren der Stadt hin zum Meer. Die Realisierung der Stahlstrukturen stellte eine komplexe Aufgabe dar: Objekte, die derartig große Dimensionen mit einem ästhetischen Anspruch verbinden, erfordern eine hohe Qualität der Verarbeitung; unsere Kompetenz garantiert hier eine passgenaue Metallstruktur und eine bis auf den Millimeter abgestimmte Verkleidung. Genau so umsichtig und präzise funktioniert auch die in die Skulptur integrierte Lichttechnik. Das System basiert auf der Lichtpunktzerlegung, wodurch die Blendung merklich reduziert wird. Die Ausleuchtung erreicht eine hohe Gleichmäßigkeit und die zu beleuchtende Fläche kann exakt begrenzt werden, was vor allem für die umliegenden Häuser eine große Rolle spielt. Für das Projekt wurden ebenfalls beleuchtete Sitz elemente entwickelt und gefertigt; ihre Form und Oberfläche treten mit den Lichtsystemen in Korres pondenz. i Già da alcuni anni è in corso a Jesolo, città balneare in provincia di Venezia, una completa ristrutturazione della spiaggia, delle strade e delle piazze. Un percorso per trasformare il turismo di massa in un turismo di qualità: la città risulterà più aperta e pronta a divenire un'unità urbana. I sistemi di illuminazione che abbiamo realizzato sono sculture che esaltano l'idea di fondo del progetto: rivolti oltre la piazza, creano un collegamento tra il centro e il mare. Il lavoro per la realizzazione delle strutture in acciaio è stato complesso: oggetti di tali dimensioni, che rispondano anche ad esigenze estetiche, richiedono una lavorazione di alta qualità. Grazie alle nostre competenze abbiamo creato una struttura in metallo perfetta e un rivestimento che si adatta ad essa con precisione millimetrica. Altrettanto accurata e precisa è la tecnologia di illuminazione integrata nella scultura. Il sistema si basa sul principio della scomposizione dei punti luminosi, che riduce notevolmente l'effetto abbagliante. L'illuminazione raggiunge così un'elevata omogeneità e la superficie da illuminare può essere delimitata con precisione, un aspetto molto importante vista la presenza di edifici circostanti. Sono stati inoltre progettati e realizzati degli elementi di seduta illuminati, la cui forma e superficie richiamano quelle del sistema di illuminazione verticale. 50 Project: Bella Center, Copenhagen Project year: / Gotham Street Lighting System for the 2009 UN Conference on Climate Change e d i Global warming was the central topic of the UN Conference on Climate Change staged in 2009 by the Danish government under a mandate from the United Nations. Together with the light designer Steven Scott and the architects from 3XN, ewo was already able to present a pioneering solution on the plaza in front of the conference centre by installing a CO 2 -neutral illumination system. At the heart of the Gotham Street Lighting System project is a mast developed by Scott s company, Scotia, which generates solar power. The lighting units were to be installed in fixtures designed by 3XN. Because the energy required was not to exceed what could be generated by the mast, highly efficient lighting technology was sought. In addition to producing the fixtures and providing the ultra-efficient lighting units, we used our know-how, to integrate the three components the solar mast, the lighting fixture and the LED technology into a reliable and stable system. Particularly since solar technology requires specific electro-technical solutions that include special operating equipment. Together with its partners, ewo realised a prototype for an autonomous lighting system in this context. By complying with the highest classification of the technical standard EN for road lighting, ME1, we also provided proof of the potential performance and precision of this new technology at an early date. Die Erwärmung der Atmosphäre war das zentrale Thema der UN-Klimakonferenz im Jahr 2009, die von der dänischen Regierung mit dem Mandat der Vereinten Nationen ausgerichtet wurde. Zusammen mit dem Lichtdesigner Steven Scott den Architekten von 3XN konnte ewo bereits auf dem Vorplatz des Konferenzzentrums Zeichen für die Zukunft setzen mit einem CO 2-neutralen Beleuchtungssystem. Das Herzstück des Projektes Gotham Street Lighting System ist ein von Scotts Firma Scotia entwickelter Mast, der mit Photovoltaik Strom erzeugt. Ein von 3XN entworfenes Gehäuse sollte die Leuchteinheiten aufnehmen. Weil die benötigte Energie nicht höher als die am Mast erzeugte sein durfte, wurde besonders energiesparende Lichttechnik gesucht. Neben der Fertigung der Gehäuse und der Bereitstellung der ultraeffizienten Lichteinheiten nutzten wir unser Know-how, um die drei Bestandteile Solarmast, Leuchte, LED-Technologie in ein zuverlässiges, stabiles System zu integrieren. Beispielsweise verlangt die Solartechnik nach einem dezidierten elektrotechnischen Konzept, wozu die Auswahl spezieller Betriebsgeräte gehört. Mit seinen Partnern realisierte ewo hier einen Prototyp für ein autarkes Lichtsystem. Mit der Erfüllung der Norm EN für Straßen beleuchtung bis zur höchsten Klassifizierung ME1 stellten wir außerdem zu einem frühen Zeitpunkt die Leistungsfähigkeit und Präzision dieser neuen Technologie unter Beweis. Il riscaldamento globale è stato il tema centrale della Conferenza dell'onu sul clima organizzata nel 2009 dal governo danese su mandato delle Nazioni Unite. Con un sistema di illuminazione a zero emissioni di CO 2 ewo, insieme al light designer Steven Scott e agli architetti dello studio 3XN, ha lasciato una testimonianza per il futuro già nel piazzale antistante il centro congressi. Il cuore del progetto "Gotham Street Lighting System" è un palo che produce energia elettrica con sistemi fotovoltaici ideato da Scotia, l'azienda del designer Scott. L'alloggiamento per le unità di illuminazione è stato progettato da 3XN. Poiché l'energia per il funzionamento delle lampade non doveva superare quella generata nel palo, sono state utilizzate delle unità di illuminazione a basso consumo. ewo ha sfruttato il proprio know-how non solo per realizzare l'alloggiamento e predisporre le unità di illuminazione ultraefficienti, ma anche per integrare in un sistema stabile ed efficiente i diversi componenti: palo solare, luci e tecnologia LED. La tecnologia a energia solare richiede ad esempio un progetto elettrotecnico specifico che implica la selezione di alimentatori appositi. Insieme ai nostri partner abbiamo realizzato il prototipo di un sistema di illuminazione autosufficiente. Abbiamo inoltre messo alla prova sin dall'inizio l'efficienza e la precisione di questa nuova tecnologia con la conformità alla norma EN per l'illuminazione stradale e con la classificazione ME1, la più alta categoria illuminotecnica di riferimento.

56 Project: Village redesign, Caldaro Project year: / Right for the village versus normal for the village Walter Angonese, Architect e d i The architect responsible for the circumspect redesign of the town of Caldaro, in the midst of the vineyards of the Alto Adige region of South Tyrol, was Walter Angonese, a native son. Along with the town itself, he insisted on a specifically produced solution that respected and emphasized the special character of the locality. Angonese described the lighting fixtures that were developed here as luminaires that enter into a symbiosis through their function, form and the material used. The trapezoidal shape of the fixtures represents a form that functions both when mounted on a pole as well as directly on the wall. It is, however, the surface that really provides the luminaires with their special character: architectural bronze was used. This material does not so much wear out over time but, instead, improves. It gradually takes on a greenish patina and only reveals its true beauty over the course of decades. In this sense, it resembles the character of the village. Der verantwortliche Architekt für die behutsame Neugestaltung von Kaltern inmitten der Weinlandschaft des Überetsch in Südtirol ist der hier geborene Walter Angonese. Er und die Gemeinde bestanden bei der Beleuchtung auf einer eigens angefertigten Lösung, die die Besonder heiten des Ortes respektiert und hervorhebt. Angonese beschreibt die hier entwickelten Leuchten als Beleuchtungs körper, deren Funk tion, Formgebung und Materialität eine Symbiose eingehen. Die Trapezform des Gehäuses stellt eine formale Lösung dar, die sowohl als Mastleuchte als auch direkt an der Wand angebracht funktioniert. Den besonderen Charakter erhalten die Leuchten jedoch durch ihre Oberfläche: Zum Einsatz kommt Baubronze. Für dieses Material ist Zeit kein Faktor der Abnutzung, sondern der Vervollkommnung. Es nimmt nach und nach eine grünliche Patina an und offenbart erst im Verlauf der Jahrzehnte seine wahre Schönheit. In dieser Hinsicht ähnelt es dem Charakter eines Ortes. Walter Angonese è l'architetto incaricato del rispettoso restyling di Caldaro, comune dell'alto Adige immerso nei vigneti dell'oltradige che gli ha dato i natali. D'accordo con l'amministrazione comunale ha optato per una soluzione di illuminazione ideata appositamente, che rispetti e metta in risalto le peculiarità del luogo. L'architetto descrive gli oggetti realizzati come "corpi illuminanti in cui la funzione, la forma e i materiali sono in simbiosi fra loro." La forma trapezoidale del corpo che ospita le unità di illuminazione è una soluzione formale che può essere applicata sia su palo sia direttamente a muro. La caratteristica particolare di questi sistemi è però rappresentata dalla loro superficie, per la quale è stato utilizzato il bronzo, una delle leghe più antiche della storia. Per questo materiale il tempo non rappresenta un fattore di deterioramento, ma di perfezionamento. Giorno dopo giorno il bronzo edile utilizzato a Caldaro acquista una patina verdognola e mostra la sua vera bellezza solo con il passare degli anni, rispecchiando in questo senso il carattere del luogo.
