2 SWITZERLAND's HIPPEST HOLLYWOOD HOTSHOTS LAUNCH "ALSO SWISS" A cultural event in Downtown L.A. Arts District celebrates contemporary Swiss Art and Design benefiting the Oscar de La Hoya Foundation Los Angeles, CA - For the first time ever, Downtown L.A.'s happpening scene will echo Switzerland's National Day celebration with a cultural event organized by an eclectic group of Swiss nationals and Swiss / Americans. Calling themselves ALSO SWISS, this group of forward-thinking artists, designers, architects and craftsmen as well as movers-and-shakers in film and new media, have banned together to make ALSO SWISS an annual event that supports L.A.'s local community while celebrating Swiss culture and contemporary art and design. Proceeds from the ALSO SWISS event will be donated this time to the Oscar De La Hoya Foundation. Every year, Switzerland celebrates its National Day on August 1. In keeping with that custom, ALSO SWISS will throw its annual event on or around Swiss National Day. This year, the first ALSO SWISS EVENT kicks off on Saturday, August 3rd from 5 pm to 1 am in the Los Angeles Downtown Arts District, specifically on 3rd Street between Garey and Santa Fe. Page 2 by 1,200 people participating in the opening parades for Switzerland's national exhibition, the EXPO.02. Between 7:30pm and 9:30 pm the Swiss, chartclimbing group VIVIAN, currently on tour in the U.S., will perform live, as will the Bay Area band, Sweet Duration. Later, at 10:00 pm, a film entitled "Urmusig" by Swiss filmmaker Cyrill Schläpfer will make its U.S. premiere. For those who like to party or listen to jazz, ALSO SWISS will host a dance party and a jazz lounge where Swiss culinary delights and Swiss wine will be served. ABOUT THE OSCAR DE LA HOYA FOUNDATION The Oscar De La Hoya Foundation, established in 1995, provides athletic and educational opportunities for the children of the East Los Angeles commmunity. As part of its commitment to guide young people toward leading positive lives, the Foundation offers programs at the Oscar De La Hoya Youth Center and the Oscar De La Hoya Learning Center. "We're a bunch of progressive thinkers," explained Thomas Nellen, a Swiss artist and designer who masterminded the formation of ALSO SWISS, "who want to give back by being part of the effort to revitalize Downtown L.A. and support non-profit organizations in the City of Los Angeles. We also want to have some fun with what we do for a living in our various creative fields. " ALSO SWISS (entrance requires a minimum $10 donation) will feature an eclectic show of contemporary Swiss art, design, craft, cuisine and music. Much of what's on display comes from members of the ALSO SWISS group, and reflects the influence of life in L.A. Among them is photographer Isabel Snyder whose portraits of celebrities like Halle Berry, Denzel Washington, Helen Hunt and Benjamin Bratt regularly grace the pages of Rolling Stone, Entertainment Weekly, Talk (when it lived) and Esquire magazines. Gerade bewies der Schweizer mit "Behind the Sun", dass seine ungewöhnliche Art des Filmemachens durchaus funktioniert. Statt Superstars wählt der d r e i f a c h e Oscarpreisträger für seine Projekte völlig unbekannte Schauspieler, anstatt in dicken Studios, dreht er in exotischen Ländern. Während t y p i s c h e Hollywoodproduzenten ihre Filme so schnell wie möglich abwickeln und auf den Markt bringen wollen, nimmt sich Arthur Cohn die Zeit, die er braucht, um seinem Werk Perfektion zu verleihen. Wir sind gespannt auf sein nächstes Werk! Xavier Koller fühlt sich wohl in Kalifornien Aus seinem US Film "Ring of Fire" wurde nichts. Zwar drehte Xavier Koller mit Kiefer Sutherland und Daryl Hannah, doch dann ging die Produktionsfirma pleite und der Filmstart platzte. Trotzdem genießt der schweizer Erfolgsregisseur sein Leben in Kalifornien. Seit 1993 lebt er schon in Santa Monica, einer Gegend, in der er "wie in Europa, zu Fuss einkaufen gehen kann." Seine kleine Tochter wachse allerdings auf wie eine echte Amerikanerin, gab der Oscarpreisträger einem Magazin gegenüber zu. Deshalb sei er froh, dass sie kein Junge sei, da er ja sonst Baseball spielen lernen müsste. Xaviers Kollers aktueller Film heisst übrigens "Highway" und die Hauptrolle spielt Hardy Krüger Jr. Roman Wydens Film "Peace of Heart" feiert in Hollywood Premiere Am 3. August zeigt der 32-jährige Regisseur und Produzent aus der Schweiz seinen Debutfilm in der "Ed Gould Plaza" in Hollywood. German-World traf den jungen Filmemacher schon vorher zum Interview. GW: Kannst Du uns in ein paar Sätzen beschreiben, um was es in Deinem Film geht? Roman Wyden: "Peace of Heart" ist die Geschichte des jungen Australiers Carson, der sich während seiner Jugend immer mehr von der Welt abschottet, weil sein Vater die Familie verliess, als er 7 war. Carson entwickelte eine Angst vor Ablehnung und geht Beziehungen daher sehr vorsichtig an. Er lebt in Venice, Kalifornien und versucht, seine Vergangenheit hinter sich zu bringen... bis er eines Tages einen Anruf von seiner Mutter erhält: Der Vater liegt im Sterben und möchte den Sohn noch einmal sehen. Carson kämpft mit seinem Ego, welches dem Vater nicht vergeben will. Seine hübsche Nachbarin Samira und sein neuer Boss Doc überzeugen ihn aber, doch noch zurück nach Australien zu gehen um den Vater zu sehen. Dort angekommen erfährt Carson dass sein Vater schon gestorben ist. Kann Carson ihm jetzt immer noch vergeben oder ist es zu spät? Sind seine Beziehungen mit Samira und Doc ebenfalls gefährdet? Das Ende hat einen Überraschungseffekt. GW: Ist der Film autobiografisch? Roman Wyden: Zu etwa 30%. Dass mein Vater gestorben ist, bevor ich es zurück in die Schweiz schaffte, das stimmt. Und was das Abschliessen von der Welt betrifft... damit können wir uns wohl alle hin und wieder identifizieren! Page 4 GW: Wie lange dauerte es, von der Idee bis zur Premiere des Films? Roman Wyden: Die Idee kam mir im Mai Also waren es circa 2 Jahre. GW: Was sind die grössten Schwierigkeiten bei der Realisation eines Low Budget Films? Roman Wyden: Man hat immer Zeitdruck, weil man eben kaum Geld hat. Man muss die Crew, die ja quasi umsonst arbeitet, ständig motiviert halten. Und man muss immer wieder Kompromisse eingehen. GW: Was rätst Du anderen jungen europäischen Filmemachern in Hollywood? Roman Wyden: Lass Dich von niemandem abhalten, Deinen eigenen Film zu machen. Auch wenn der noch so anders ist als die typischen Hollywoodfilme. Denn wir brauchem mehr "Geist" im Filmgeschäft. Und 'Low Budget' muss nicht unbedingt 'Low Story' heissen. GW: Ist es für Dich wichtig, dass ein Film eine Botschaft hat? Roman Wyden: Sehr wichtig. Ich finde, dass es heutzutage zu viele flache Ablenkungs- und sinnlose Action-Filme gibt. Für mich ist ein Film gut, wenn er zum Denken übers eigene Leben anregt. Regisseur Roman Wyden bei den Dreharbeiten Die Premiere findet am Samstag, den 3. 5 CHEVROLET: A SWISS LEGACY TO THE AMERICAN PEOPLE When you think all-american car, you think Chevy. In fact, to every American, Chevrolet represents the pride of the U.S automobile industry: 90 years of solid car making from the American people to the American people with such recognizable models as the Corvette and the Camaro. But what very few people know from this legendary car-maker is the extraordinary man behind the name: Swiss born Louis Chevrolet. Indeed, Louis-Joseph Chevrolet was born on Christmas day of 1878 in the Swiss town of La Chaux-de-Fonds. Second oldest brother in a line of five children, Louis was the son of a traditional watchmaker who struggled to make ends meet in the midst of an economical recession in the 1880's. His family eventually moved to France to live in a small town in Bourgogne where his father hoped that little Louis would carry-on the tradition of watch making. However Louis had other ideas. His fascination for combustion engines showed early and as a teenager he landed a job in a small motorcycle shop. Here, his talents as a mechanic blossomed. As he would soon realize, this would not be his only talent. His encounter with an American who brought his car in for repair one day, will represent a turning point in his life. From that moment on, his interest in the New World kept on growing until a faithful day in 1900, when, at age 22, he decided to conquer the promised land. His passion for automobiles soon guaranteed him a job at the Fiat factory in Brooklyn, but he had bigger plans. In addition to being crafty in front of the wheel, he discovered himself a talent behind the wheel too, and by 1905 he established himself as an exceptional race car driver. His persistence as a hard working, diligent driver, won him many National trophies Alongside his professional life, Louis Chevrolet started a family when he married his French bride Suzanne Treyvoux, who soon gave him two children. By then, other members of his family began to join him in New York, one of which was his adored older brother Gaston. He immediately shared his passion of race car driving with him and together they started winning many races. Unfortunately, tragedy struck Louis' life when his beloved brother died during a race. This sudden event marked, for Louis, the end of an incredible run as one of the most gifted race car drivers of his era, as he decided to turn his back for good on the world of racing. Surprisingly, these early successes are not what Louis Chevrolet is being remembered for, but rather his later achievements in the field of car design. Indeed, soon after his brother's death, Louis decided to return to his first love of car building and by 1909 he presented his first self-built automobile, complete with the motor. This was the beginning of a succcessful career as a car-maker and the revelation of yet another gift as a car designer. In fact, his designs became such a success that in 1911 Louis decided, with the help of some friends, to create the "Chevrolet Motor Company of Michigan". But his association to his founding company was short lived and by 1913, he was forced out by his partners over strategic and financial disagreements. During this period, he made an important friendship with William C. Durant, founder and Manager of the General Motors Company. This bond later ensured the survival of the trademark "Chevrolet" name when GMC and Chevrolet Motor merged in This newly created company, that vowed to respect the essence and name of each division, had become the giant that we know today. In the early 1930's, Louis Chevrolet slowed down his pace despite a brief foray back into the car racing industry when he built the now legendary "Monroe". His health problems eventually pushed him to leave the physically demanding world of car-making for good and between 1934 and 1941 he led a quiet life, and enjoyed a trip back to his native La Chaux-de- Fonds for the first time in 50 years. He died on June 6th 1941 in Detroit. He was 62 years old. Looking back at his legacy, Louis Chevrolet did not end his life as the wealthy man expected. Instead, he spent his last years with his wife Suzanne in a modest apartment in Florida. He now rests alongside his beloved brother Gaston in Indianapolis, home of his most remarkable racing achievements. Finally, on Wednesday, after the Dow had been declining for nine weeks straight, investors could experience a relief rally of 488 points, the second largest gain ever in this index. In the days prior, however, bad news continued about accounting scandals that were rocking the markets when a New York Times article alleged, that two of the country's largest banks, Citigroup and J.P. Morgan were knowingly involved in the Enron debacle and Worldcom filed for bankruptcy. With 104 billion dollars in assets, Worldcom can claim to be the largest bankruptcy in corporate UShistory. As a result, the world markets went into a tailspin, sending Germany's DAX, France's CAC and the British FTSE to fiveyear lows. The rally from Wednesday, July 24th was seen by many as the first sign of a broad based market recovery. More cautious voices however are warning that from here on out, the stock markets might continue to be volatile and overall trends might be sideways with returns being in the single digits for the next couple of years. It is during times like these that investors should re-examine their asset allocation and spreading the risk between stocks and fixed income instruments, such as bonds, which provide an excellent hedge against volatility. Losses in the stock market can be offset (at least to degree) by the income stream bonds provide. 7 Schweizer Innovationsgeist mit Zukunft Während im einstigen Internetparadies Kalifornien kaum ein Tag vergeht, an dem nicht ein Dotcom-Unternehmen Konkurs macht, befinden sich zwei Schweizer Jungunternehmer auf Expansionskurs. Die Gründer von focustribe, Markus Almer und Roland Schertenleib, wollen noch dieses Jahr eine Zweitniederlassung in der Schweiz eröffnen. Hauptsitz bleibt Newport Beach südlich von Los Angeles. Von Marie Boetschi / Katja Lau 1999 gegründet, konzentrierte sich focustribe zuerst auf die Vermarktung und den Vertrieb von interaktiven CD-Rom Visitenkarten. Doch schon bald dehnte sich die Dienstleistung von focustribe auf die Bereiche Web Development, Multimedia Design und Corporate Branding aus. Die Kundenliste ist beeindruckend: Jaguar, Samsung, Sitag International, Arnette, Day Software AG. GW: Wie unterscheidet sich Ihre Firma von anderen Webunternehmen in Amerika? Markus Almer: Wir unterscheiden uns vor allem durch unseren europäisch beinflussten Designstil, der sehr viel schlichter und eleganter ist als der oft pompös-amerikanische. Das gefällt vielen Firmen hier. GW: Was raten Sie europäischen Firmen, die mit dem Gedanken spielen, nach Amerika zu expandieren? Markus Almer: Am Anfang ist es wichtig, ein Budget festzulegen und viel Kapital für das Marketing bereit zu stellen. Der amerikanische Markt ist riesig, ebenso die Konkurrenz. Am besten, man konzentriert sich auf eine Nische. Das ist kostengünstiger. Amerikaner sind Weltmeister im Marketing und Verkauf. Deshalb ist es wichtig, dass man ein gutes Team von Verkäufern zusammenstellt oder sich mit erfolgreichen Channel Partnern zusammenschliesst. Um Erfolg zu haben, muss man einzigartig sein. Hier gibt es schon alles. Und wenn es noch nicht existiert, dann dauert es keine Woche, bis es jemand auf dem Markt bringt. Sehr wichtig für eine Schweizer Firma: "Think globally, act locally". Der Kundenkontakt muss vor Ort sein. Das Produkt oder die Dienstleistung sollte den amerikanischen Kunden auf amerikanische Art angeboten werden. GW: Was waren die Hauptschwierigkeiten am Anfang Ihrer Geschäftstätigkeiten hier in Südkalifornien? Page 7 Markus Almer: Ich kam Ende 1998, mitten in der Internet Euphorie nach Amerika. Alles, was mit Internet zu tun hatte, war extrem heiss und jeder stürzte sich darauf. Firmen winkten mit Venture Kapital. Ich musste bald feststellen, dass viele sogenannte Geschäfsleute nur "Talker" sind. Man muss wahnsinnig aufpassen, um unterscheiden zu könnnen, was Sein und was Schein ist. GW: Wie haben Sie Ihr Netzwerk aufgebaut? Markus Almer: Da wir eigentlich in Südkalifornien niemanden kannten, habe ich versucht, möglichst viele Schweizer Geschäftsleute kennenzulernen. Die haben mich wiederum an amerikanische Kunden weiterempfohlen. Dann haben wir begonnen, Verhandlungen mit strategischen Partnern aufzunehmen. Mit Firmen, die unsere Dienstleistungen ergänzen. Zum Beispiel mit Day Software, wo wir einerseits unseren Kunden deren Software anbieten und Day wiederum ihren Kunden beim Entwickeln der Website unser Front End Design empfiehlt. GW: Sie beraten jetzt selbst europäische Firmen, die einen Markteintritt in die USA planen. Wie sieht eine solche Beratung konkret aus? Markus Almer: Wir versuchen weniger, dem Kunden mit Consulting zu helfen, sondern bieten ganz konkret eine Lösung an. Wenn eine Firma in Amerika aktiv werden möchte, helfen wir ihr beim Marketing. 8 Swiss Benevolent scholarships for studies in America Page 8 Swiss-American students can now apply for a scholarship through one of several funds set up in the Swiss Benevolent Society if they want to continue their studies at an American school. This is one of the new developments the society lists in its annual report for 2001, which was published at the end of July. Until last year, the scholarships institted in the Medicus Student Exchange were only made available to Swiss-Americans - those with at least one Swiss parent - who wanted to study at a Swiss university. Since there was not much interest to study at a university in Switzerland, the founders of the program last year agreed to offer the scholarship to students already in the United States. Besides these scholarships, there are also Zimmermann Scholarships, which were awarded for the first time last year. They are based on a donation by John and Marie Zimmermann and awarded to students who have the highest grade point average and reside in Connecticut, Delaware, New Jersey, New York or Pennsylvania. For students living in the same states, there is also the Maguire Outstanding Scholastic Achievement Award for academic excellence. Finally, there are the long-established Pellegrini scholarships for formal studies above high-school level. New York Staff Writer Veronika Hass on her way to the Swiss Benevolent Society Scholarships are only one part of the activities of the Benevolent Society. The other major area of its activities is social service. The society's social workers, Carol Wilson and Abigail Hirsch, made about 600 visits to the 60 or so active clients last year. Financial problems are not usually the primary issue, as the report explains. The main service the social workers can offer is their knowledge, which is useful for helping their elderly clients in everyday life and the human touch that many of the old people miss. One of their clients turned 101 last year and one young family had triplets which were born prematurely. Since their small family car cannot hold three car seats, the SBS is helping them to purchase a minivan. "Overall, things remained fairly constant," says the Society's Executive Director Annemarie Gilman. The Swiss Benevolent Society listed 694 members in its annual report for last year. Their overall donations last year went down by $14,000 leaving them with $63,163. At the end of the year, investments were close to $9.2 million. The funds are now managed by UBS Global Asset management, a subsidiary of UBS. The Society's Investment Committee is now fully detached from the day-to-day management responsibilities. The Swiss Benevolent Society of New York was organized in 1846 to help Swiss immigrants who just arrived in the United States. Some of them were desperately poor, others saw the chance for greater opportunities, and some, marginally criminals, had been encouraged to emigrate by the local authorities back home. Many of them were unprepared for the culture shock they were to experience. Civic-minded Swiss already established in America came together to suppport the newcomers. Over the years, the society has managed a home for transients, a soup kitchen, a home for the aged, a children's camp, and a residence for young women. A special mention is made in the report to honor the memory of SBS Board member Selina Sutter, who died on September 11, 2002, in the attacks on the World Trade center.
