3 Abstract In this work the set of all isometric representations of a locally compact abelian group on a Banach space is considered. To this set there are given topologies in terms of the (Arveson) spectral subspaces. We see that these spectral subspaces determine the behavior of the representation in a very narrow way, and that these topologies are finer than the usual norm convergence on compact subsets of G. In the sequel it is shown that the spectral topologies coincide with the above mentioned norm convergence provided we consider a commutative subset. Afterwards we show that the spectral topologies behave well with respect to the subset of the uniformly continuous representation and the various possibilities to put them together (ie. product of groups, product of Banach spaces). Moreover we will prove that the set of all representations is complete with respect to the spectral topologies, and that they are metrizable provided that the dual group is. Furthermore these spectral topologies are applied (via the theorem of Stone) to the set of all selfadjoint operators on a Hilbert space. There we see that this set is complete with respect to these topologies and that the various concepts (positivity, functional calculus) of Hilbert space operators behave well with respect to these topologies. Finally we will find that these topologies are closely connected with the spectral measures; that the neighborhoods can be expressed in terms of the spectral measures. Then a weaker notation, in terms of the spectrum of single points, is introduced, and it is shown that the topologies are finer than the pointwise norm convergence (uniformly on compact subsets of the group), and that these topologies coincide pro- 7

4 8 Abstract vided that we consider a commutative subset. Finally the weak spectral topologies are applied to the selfadjoint operators on a Hilbert space and it is seen that they behave well with respect to the usual concepts of operators on a Hilbert space. In the last chapter the theory of spectral convergence is applied to group representa tions on Banach algebras and in particular on C*- and W*- algebras. There it will be shown that the spectral topologies behave well with respect to the Borchers-Arveson theorem; that the map from the representations on the von Neumann algebra to the unbounded selfadjoint operators is continuous if both sets are equipped with the spectral topologies. Moreover it is seen that the spectral topologies behave well with respect to Ikunishi's extension from a C*-dynamical system to a W*-dynamical system. It is actually proven that this extension map is continuous if the sets of representations are equipped with the spectral topologies.

5 Zusammenfassung Wir betrachten die Menge aller Darstellungen einer lokal kompakten abelschen Gruppe auf einem Banachraum. Zu dieser Menge finden wir Topologien, welche wir mit Hilfe der Spektralen Teilraume definieren. Danach zeigen wir, dass diese Topologien sehr gut mit den Stukturen dieser Menge vertraglich sind. Das heisst, dass das Produkt bezuglich Gruppen oder beziiglich Banachraumen stetig ist. Zu dieser Menge gibt es noch eine andere Topologie, namlich die Topologie der gleichmassigen Normkonvergenz auf kompakten Teilmengen der Gruppe. Wir zeigen, dass die letztgenannte Topologie grober als die spektralen Topologien ist, dass jedoch alle Topologien ubereinstimmen, falls wir kommutative Teilmengen betrachten. Es zeigt sich, dass die Menge aller gleichmassig stetigen Darstellungen bezuglich der symmetrischen Spektralen Topologie abgeschlossen in der Menge aller Darstellungen ist. Auch beweisen wir, dass die Menge aller Darstellungen vollstandig ist, und dass die Spektralen Topologien metrisierbar sind, falls es die Charktergruppe ist. Im darauffolgenden Kapitel wenden wir diese Theorie auf die Menge aller selbstadjungierten Operatoren an. Hierfur gebrauchen wir den Satz von Stone, und zeigen, dass die Spektralen Topologien aufs Engste mit den Spektralmassen verbunden sind. Es stellt sich ebenfalls heraus, dass sich die Spektralen Topologien sehr gut gegenuber den ublichen Operationen von Operatoren verhalten (Positivitat, Operatorenkalkul). In den folgenden zwei Kapiteln beschaftigen wir uns mit einer schwacheren Form der Spektralen Topologien. Anstatt Spektrale Teilraume zu verwenden, betrachten wir die Spektra der einzelnen Punkte. Die so gewonnenen Topologien sind feiner als die punktweise uniforme Konvergenz auf kompakten Teilmengen der Gruppe, stimmen 9

6 10 Zusammenfassiiing jedoch iiberein, falls man kommutative Teilmengen betrachtet. Die Arbeit endet mit einer Anwendung dieser Theorie auf Banachalgebren und im Spetiellen auf C*- und von Neumann Algebren. Wir zeigen, dass die Spektralen Topologien sich sehr gut gegeniiber den Satzen von Borchers-Arveson und Ikurishi verhalten. Im Falle des Satzes von Borchers-Arveson stellt sich heraus, dass die Abbildung der Darstellungen in die selbstadjungierten Operatoren stetig ist. Im Falle des Satzes von Ikunishi ist die Fortsetzung selbst stetig.
