1 Guideline for Seminar, Bachelor and Mater Thee Chair of Prof. Dr. Andrea Meier, Information Sytem Reearch Group, Univerity of Fribourg, Department of Informatic, Bd. de Pérolle 90, 1700 Fribourg Thi document provide guideline how to write a cientific work at the chair of Prof. Dr. Andrea Meier, head of the information ytem (IS) reearch group. The remark are related to all kind of Thee, which are upervied by member of the IS group, i.e. to report of eminar a well a to Seminar, Bachelor and Mater Thee. Legal bai of thi document i art. 3 para. 4, art. 4 para. 3 and art. 5 para. 4 of the regulation ( ) from the 18 th of February 2009 about the tudy organiation. Content 1. Selection of a Reearch Topic Open reearch topic for Seminar, Bachelor and Mater Thee are publihed on the webite of the chair ( Anyone, who i intereted in one of the topic i friendly invited to contact directly the reponible upervior (aitant). Own propoition of tudent regarding a reearch topic are very welcome. However, the acceptance of the topic propoed follow upon agreement with the examiner (profeor) and upervior (aitant). The reearch topic hould alway meet the interet of the tudent and the upervior, i.e. it ha to contribute to field of reearch of the IS group. For motivational and organiational reaon, it i recommended to choe the right reearch topic carefully. 2. What ha to Be Conidered in the Propoal? Following point have to be conidered in every propoal: a. Title page: Name of the univerity, department and the chair Proviional title of the Thei Author: urname, family name, matriculation number, potal and addre Examiner (Prof. Andrea Meier, Dr. Stefan Hüemann) and upervior (aitant) Place and date b. Background and motivation of the Thei (why writing a work about thi topic?) c. Problem tatement and reearch quetion (3 to 5). For each reearch quetion it ha to be pecified, why the reearch quetion i relevant, and how a reearch quetion will be anwered (i.e. uing which reearch method, e.g. dicuion of the literature, cae tudie or an empirical tudy) d. Objective and output of the Thei (what ha to be achieved within the work?) e. Addreee (who i uppoed to ue the reult of the work?) f. Proceeding and method (which reearch method are ued?) g. Time chedule (~5 mile tone; ub-goal, activitie, tep) h. Content (proviional table of content with 2 hierarchical level) i. Literature (at leat 6 ource) 3. Evaluation of the Thei 3.1 Preentation of the Thei The written Thei ha to be ubmitted in hardcopy and electronic form (PDF requeted). The PDF of the Thei will be publihed on the webite of the chair. It ha to be clarified in the Thei, if the reult are not uppoed to be publihed for nondicloure reaon. Bachelor and Mater Thee have to be preented to the member of the IS group in a meeting. The preentation (uing Powerpoint or BeamerTeX) lat 20 to 30 minute, followed by a dicuion of circa 10 minute. 2

3 3.2 Evaluation Grid With regard to content, every report of a eminar a well a all Seminar, Bachelor and Mater Thei i evaluated uing the evaluation grid of [Deininger et al. 2005] (ee Table 1 and 2). Formally, everal criteria of cientific reearch dicued in Chapter 4.1 are evaluated. For Bachelor and Mater Thee, a detailed evaluation i written and communicated to the author. Reult of Seminar Thee are dicued verbally. A detailed evaluation of a Seminar Thei will be provided on requet, for intance, if the author need better elf-evaluation in regard to a Bachelor or Mater Thei. 5 4. Scientific Reearch 4.1 Structure and Criteria of a Scientific Paper A Thei alway tart with the abtract (management ummary) followed by the lit of content. The abtract include a half page to one page of text, dicuing the main reult of the reearch. At the end of the abtract, ome key word are lited. Key word help to claify and categorize the Thei. After the lit of content follow a lit of figure, a lit of table and a lit of abbreviation. All lit are numbered with roman number (I, II, III, IV, ). The acknowledgement can (but doe not have to) be written after the lit of abbreviation. The obligatory chapter Introduction contain three ub-chapter: - Problem Statement : which cientific reearch quetion have to be anwered? - Objective : which objective or goal (circa 3-5) have to be achieved? - Outline or proceeding : which reearch method are taken into account (Chapter 4.2)? Title contain at mot three hierarchical level ( ). A Thei hould be tructured logically and clearly (red thread). Important principle: 1 paragraph = 1 thought. Good Thee do not have many (any) footnote. Important key word and term have to be defined clearly. Avoid formulation uing I or We. A cientific language ha to be ued (e.g. formal entence in paive). Spelling, grammar and punctuation ha to be correct. Figure and table have to be commented and quoted. Legend are ued to explain ymbol in figure (for intance, it hould be evident if arrow how either relation or data flow). The final chapter (about two page) contain a ummery of the main finding, a critical aement and an outlook. The reference lit i formatted conitently according to the pecification of Chapter 6. Appendixe, e.g. an index and/or a gloary (all optional), follow after the reference lit. It i expected from every author of a Thei to reearch the relevant literature ytematically and carefully. It can be ditinguihed between following categorie of cientific literature or work: - text book - reearch paper of cientific journal - reearch paper of cientific conference and congree - habilitation and diertation - Bachelor/Mater Thee (Diploma Thee) and Seminar Thei, and - cientific contribution in the World Wide Web. Every category of literature ha certain advantage and diadvantage (of Table 5). Da Experiment unterucht Kaualzuammenhang in kontrollierter Umgebung, indem eine Experimentalvariable auf wiederholbare Weie manipuliert und die Wirkung der Manipulation gemeen wird. Der Unteruchunggegentand wird entweder im Feld oder im Labor unterucht, wodurch weentlich die Möglichkeiten der Umgebungkontrolle beeinflut werden. Die Simulation bildet da Verhalten de zu unteruchenden Sytem formal in einem Modell ab und tellt Umweltzutände durch betimmte Belegungen der Modellparameter nach. Sowohl durch die Modellkontruktion al auch durch die Beobachtung der endogenen Modellgröen. E wird ein Praxiproblem durch einen gemichten Krei au Wienchaft und Praxi gelöt. Therefore, all report, Seminar, Bachelor and Mater Thei hould have a theoretical-deductive part ("concept") and a practical part ("cae" or "application ; i.e. a cae tudy, quantitative/qualitative empirical tudy or a prototype).
