1 1. To use weather expressions. There are three types of weather expression: a. Expressions with ist (to describe what the weather is like.) e.g. Es ist kalt. = It is cold; Es ist nass. = It is wet. etc. b. Expressions with verbs (to describe what the weather is doing.) e.g. es regnet. = It s raining; Es schneit. = It s snowing. etc. c. Expressions with Es gibt (to say There is going to be) followed by the accusative. e.g. Es gibt ein Gewitter. = There is going to be a thunder storm. Activity 1: Translate these sentences into German. 1. There is going to be thunder and lightning. 2. It s usually cold in winter. 3. In autumn it is often overcast. 4. It s foggy in the east. 5. It s freezing in the mountains. 6. It s sunny and warm in summer. 2. To use the imperfect tense of irregular verbs. The imperfect tense is another way of talking about the past, but is not usually used in speech. Irregular (strong) verbs have set stems to which the following endings are added. Note that nothing is added in the ich and er/sie/es/man forms. e.g. fahren = to travel, to drive stem = fuhr ich fuhr wir fuhren du fuhrst er/sie/es/man fuhr ihr fuhrt Sie fuhren sie fuhren Some frequently use ones are: Present ich bin ich bleibe ich esse ich fahre Imperfect ich war ich blieb ich aß ich fuhr

Whilst I was sleeping, my mother watched TV. 2. I read a newspaper in the Lobby. 3. We ate chicken and chips. 4. The boy drank a cola on the terrace. 5. We went swimming every day. 6. My parents stayed for two weeks in Berlin. 7. My brother had a bad stomach. 8. On Friday we travelled by coach to the town centre. 3. To revise subordinating conjunctions. Subordinating conjunctions make the verb go to the end of the sentence or clause. e.g. Wir sind im Hotel geblieben, obwohl es sehr laut war. We stayed in the hotel, although it was very loud. To add more complexity, you can start the sentence with the subordinate clause. When you do this, make sure that you invert the subject and verb in the clause that follows: e.g. Obwohl es sehr laut war, sind wir im Hotel geblieben. Activity 3: Join these sentences, using subordinating conjunctions at the start. 1. Die Pension war billig. Wir blieben dort zwei Wochen. (weil) 2. Ich las ein Buch. Es hat geregnet. (während) 3. Wir sahen fern. Ich trank eine Limo. (bevor) 4. Ich sah den Dieb. Ich ging zur Rezeption. (nachdem) 5. Ich war sehr jung. Ich ging gern schwimmen. (als) 6. Mein Bruder war sehr intelligent. Er hat eine Dummheit gemacht. (obwohl) 7. Es war sehr kalt. Ich habe einen Pulli getragen. (da) 8. Ich hätte viel Geld. Ich würde ein großes Haus kaufen. (wenn)

3 Subordinating conjunctions include: als when + past nachdem after bevor before da since dass that obwohl although während while wenn when, if weil because 4. To use comparative and superlative adverbs. An adverb is a word used to describe the verb e.g. schnell (quickly), langsam (slowly), oft (often). e.g. Ich laufe schnell nach Hause. I run home quickly. If you wish to say something goes faster or you do something more often, this is the comparative form of the adverb e.g. schneller (faster), langsamer (more slowly), öfter (more often). To form the comparative, simply add er to the adverb. Note that some vowels add an umlaut. e.g. Ich laufe schneller als mein Bruder nach Hause. I run home more quickly than my brother. If you wish to say something goes the fastest or someone works the hardest, this is the superlative form of the adverb e.g. am schnellsten (fastest), am langsamsten (the slowest).to form the superlative, simply add (e)sten to the adverb and place am before it. e.g. Ich laufe am schnellsten. I run the quickest. Key exceptions: adverb comparative superlative gern lieber am liebsten gut besser am besten Activity 4: Translate into English. 1. Ich gehe gern schwimmen, ich gehe lieber kegeln, aber am liebsten gehe ich wandern. 2. Wie komme ich am besten zum Dom, bitte? 3. Ein Flugzeug fährt schneller als ein Zug. 4. Mein Bruder ist sehr fleißig, weil er am härtesten im Klassenzimmer arbeitet. 5. Ich kenne ihn gut, aber ich kenne sie besser. 6. Frau Schmidt hilft mir öfter als Herr Schiller.

To use dative prepositions The following prepositions are always followed by the dative case. mit aus von seit nach bei ab gegenüber zu with, by (transport) from, out of from, by, of since, for (a period of time) after, to at the house of, with from (time) opposite to Just as in dem is often shortened to im, look out for beim (be idem), vom (von dem), zum (zu dem) and zur (zu der). Activity 5: Translate these sentences into German. 1. I travel by bus every day. 2. We come from Germany. 3. I am staying with my grandparents. 4. Our hotel is opposite the train station. 5. I have been learning German for five years. 6. They fly to Scotland every summer. 7. How do I get to the campsite? 8. Our television is in the living-room. 6. To use accusative prepositions. The following prepositions are always followed by the accusative case. bis durch entlang für gegen ohne um until through along for against without around

5 Activity 6: Translate these sentences into English. 1. Ich kaufe ein Geschenk für meinen Bruder. 2. Diese Broschüre ist ideal für Touristen. 3. Gehen Sie um die Ecke! 4. Ich laufe durch den Wald. 5. Er geht ohne das Mädchen. 6. Wir spielen gegen die beste Mannschaft. 7. To use relative pronouns We use relative pronouns (who, whom, which, that) to introduce a relative clause. e.g. I know a woman who lives in Berlin. In German, the relative pronoun varies according to the gender and number of the noun to which they refer, and its case depends on its function in the relative clause. The verb in the relative clause goes to the end. e.g. Ich kenne eine Frau, die in Berlin wohnt. Look at these examples that demonstrate the nominative form of the relative clause. m Ich habe einen jüngeren Bruder, der Peter heißt. f Ich sehe die Frau, die einen gelben Hut trägt. n Ich mag das Haus, das einen schönen Garten hat. I have a younger brother, who is called Peter. I can see the woman, who is wearing a yellow hat. I like the house, which has a beautiful garden. Activity 7: Join the following sentences with the correct relative pronoun. 1. Ute hat ihre Armbanduhr verloren. Sie war sehr teuer. 2. Meine Eltern wohnen in dem Haus. Es liegt am Stadtrand. 3. Ich fahre mit der Straßenbahn. Sie fährt über Würzburg. 4. Kennst du den alten Mann? Er arbeitet in diesem Hotel. 5. Ich studiere zehn Schulfächer. Sie sind sehr interessant. 6. Ich habe einen Hund. Er schläft auf meinem Bett. Note:

6 Was can be used as a relative pronoun, meaning that or which. We use it when the relative pronoun does not refer to a noun or after alles, etwas, vieles or nichts. e.g. Alles, was du gemacht hast, war interessant. Everything (that/which) you did, was interesting.
