3 Objective Evaluate alternative technical configurations composed of cogeneration plants and thermal stores which could improve the flexibility of electricity and heat production Simulate their operation under the EEX and evaluate its profitability accounting for current CHP subsidies schemes 2

4 Methodology Attain status quo of energy production Format alternative technical configurations (T1 & T2) concerning optimal heat load and thermal store size Simulate T1 and T2 s operation in combination with thermal store under influence of EEX Assess their profitability through NPV and dynamic payback time analysis compared vs. current state 3

6 Simulation Calculate the price of producing energy in the cogeneration unit Variate the CHP operation according to the cheapest source of electricity, its own or from external providers. ; Simulated the operation according to this premise and dispatch the surplus heat to other hours according to demand 5

13 Conclusions The flexibility of the cogeneration plant was improved, due to the plausibility of improving the profitability of operation under the influence of the EEX and reducing the share of power generation from the aggregates In the case of not operating under the EEX, a 3% increase on total energy products costs for T1 and 5 % for T2 would be attained. Further improvements could be used with combination of longer term thermal storage and reducing the operation of the CHP unit under partial load. A reasonable relation between when is profitable for the plant to run under partial load and the relation with the heat aggregates could determine more accurate values for this study The values only represent data for one year of operation, further review on dynamic energy demand are necessary for further periods of time. 12
