The following are the rules for German: Feminine nouns and nouns in the plural do not add endings in the genitive. The articles are der and (k)einer Masculine and neuter nouns add either -s or -es in the genitive. The masculine and neuter articles are des and (k)eines. Monosyllabic nouns generally add -es (Example 3: des Kindes). In spoken German, the e of the -es ending of monosyllabic nouns is often omitted. If a noun ends in a vowel or silent h, it takes the ending -s, even if the noun has only one syllable (der Stau, des Staus; das Stroh, des Strohs). Some other monosyllabic masculine and neuter nouns add only -s: der Film, des Films; der Chef, des Chefs. Einheit 3 341

However, when a noun ends in -s, -sch, -ß, -x, or -z, it takes the ending -es, even if it is a multisyllabic word (Example 4: der Ausstoß, des Ausstoßes). In written German, the -es ending can also be used with multisyllabic words that would otherwise take -s. 7. As in English, with proper names you add an -s to the name and place it before the noun. Note that in German, however, there is no apostrophe before the -s! 8. If the proper name ends in s, -ß, -x, or -z no -s is added, only an apostrophe. 9. The genitive case of geographical names is formed the same way as that of personal names. 10. Often, particularly in spoken German, the word von is used to substitute for the genitive case. 3.2 Two-Part Conjunctions sowohl als auch and weder noch (Zweiteilige Konjunktionen sowohl als auch und weder noch) Some conjunctions in German have two parts. They are used to join words or phrases in parallel structures. Meaning sowohl... als/wie auch weder... noch both... and/as well as neither... nor 1. Deutschland ist sowohl Mitglied der EU als/wie auch der UNO. Die Deutschen sind sowohl umweltfreundlich als/wie auch reiselustig. 2. Weder die Schweiz noch Norwegen sind Mitglieder der EU. It is used primarily in oral conversation and in conversational style writing such as ing or writing postcards. Most verbs use the auxiliary haben. The simple past forms of haben, sein, wissen, and the modal verbs are preferred over the present perfect tense, even in oral conversation. 3.4 Genitive Prepositions (Präpositionen mit Genitiv) Some prepositions cause the articles, adjectives, and nouns that follow them to be in the genitive case. Here are the four most frequently used genitive prepositions. But in formal written German the genitive is still required. Statt dem Abitur hat Joschka Fischer eine Lehre gemacht. 3.5 Future Tense (Futur) The future tense is used to talk about events that will take place in the future. The future tense is formed by combining the conjugated present tense of the auxiliary werden with a main verb infinitive. The main verb infinitive is at the end of the main clause In dependent clauses the conjugated auxiliary werden moves to final position. 3. When the context indicates the future (e.g., bald, morgen, nächste Woche, ), the future tense is often replaced by the present tense. 1 The verb werden can also be used as a main verb.
